This collaborative effects breaks the back on often overlooked issues of globalization. Tzonis brings the books into focus, creating layers of comparisons between conditions and countries otherwise unrelated. As well the book becomes the highlight on some unknown but rather talented architects working within a space cultured by globalization.

5 out of 5 stars The proof is found in this book's photography........2005-02-22

Speaking as one who spends countless (and often fruitless) hours confined to my two-man hide in a bid to obtain a world-beating photograph of some curious bird, I think it is fair to say that you can only judge a guidebook to this particular subject by studying the photographs produced by the author. In short, there is only one word which describes the photographs in this book and that word is "Wow!"

Whether it is a picture of some obscure fungus, a large group of swans or an autumnal leaf, this author not only shows us how to do it but also shows us his own results. So if you have ever wanted to take a photograph of a bird in flight - you know, one of those pictures where you can see the details in every feather in the bird's wing, then this is the book to set you on your way.

You really will not be disappointed with this one.

5 out of 5 stars I also love Carol Lay.......2002-03-06

If you're looking for an experimental style of comics, check out Story Minute. Lay uses minimal dialogue, narative and pictures to tell unique stories, and the technique works very well. Think of each strip as a short story, comic-strip style.

I'm a big fan of Calvin and Hobbes, The Far Side, Foxtrot, and Dilbert. Lay's style is certainly much different from most, but bears a lot of similarity to these strips in originality, other-worldliness, and humor.

    5 out of 5 stars I love Carol Lay.......2001-01-30

I first became acquainted with Carol Lay's alternative comic strip "Story Minute" a couple of years ago through Salon.com. Each strip tells a "Twilight Zone"-esque story in a 12-panel comic format, and they're written so superbly that Rod Serling himself would be proud. Once you read a "Story Minute" strip, you'll never go back to Garfield again.

This collection of 102 black-and-white "minutes" are representative of the high-quality artwork and writing I've come to expect. The book is quality bound and certain to last for years to come. It's difficult to find the book in print, but well worth the effort.

Between 1944 and 1945, the Japanese military launched almost ten thousand bomb-bearing balloons across the Pacific ocean. Filled with photographs and diagrams, Japan's World War II Balloon Bomb Attacks on North America provides a comprehensive account of this obscure chapter in modern warfare.

The new International Balloon Museum in Albuquerque features the remnants of a Fu-Go balloon bomb, along with one of the hand-made paper envelopes built to carry the device across the Pacific Ocean. Mikesh's detailed report is an excellent supplement to the museum exhibit. It's a fascinating look into one of the most intriguing chapters in military history. Few know that the only victims of World War II on U.S. soil were killed by this ingenious device. Its potential use in germ warfare and its contribution to UFO hysteria are interesting side notes. Well worth a read.

When the original book was published in 1973 I saw the author interviewed on a Portland, OR tv talk show. Having grown uo on the east coast I'd never heard of the ballon bombs before. My own interest was piqued and I also knew that my dad who was a WW2 vet would love to receive the book for his birthday. I sent for a copy and must admit I read it before giving it to him! It was truly a book I couldn't put down!

I sent it to my dad and he raved about it. In fact, I recall him mentioning it several times over the following years before his death how much he enjoyed it and appreciated my sending it to him .

It's a fascinating bit of history many of us knew nothing about. It would be a great gift for anyone who enjoys history and a perfect gift for WW2 buffs!

I give it 5 stars without reservation! I'm delighted to know it's been reproduced...I'll buy my own copy now.

After reading an article in the local paper about the history of the Bly Oregon incident where a family was killed by one of these bombs, I did a search on the internet for more information. I was referred to this book by several newsgroups. After opening this book, I read it cover to cover in one sitting. If you are not enthralled by the Japanese effort into these balloon bombs, you soon will be. This book is an excellent record of this little known part of our nations history.

Excellent technical explanations of the balloon weapons and how they were used against the North American continent. From production in Japan to the US defensive response to the threat, everything you'd ever want to know about these early intercontinental ballistic weapons is in this book. Heavily illustrated with maps, diagrams, and photography including aerial photography of the balloons in flight. Excellent.

From the author: We assessed edge avoidance, area sensitivity, and the relationship between local and regional forest cover for nesting Red-eyed Vireos (Vireo olivaceus) in 13 forest fragments (1-2,353 ha in size) in southcentral Ontario, Canada. Red-eyed Vireo territories and nests were not significantly farther from the edge than random points in any of the forest fragments, and there was no relationship between the probability of a male pairing and the distance of the territory from the edge of the forest fragment. The density of singing males and the probability of a male being paired increased significantly with increasing local forest cover within a 2-km radius of a study site, but not with forest fragment area or regional forest cover within a 10-km radius. Nest success was low and the probability of a nest being parasitized by the Brown-headed Cowbird (Molothrus ater) or successfully fledging [greater than or equal to]1 host young did not vary with distance of the nest from the forest edge or with any of ou r area or forest cover measures. Red-eyed Vireos did not display edge avoidance nor did they appear to be area sensitive within our study region, but there was a positive relationship with the amount of local (2-km radius) forest cover. Maintaining localized regions with high forest cover has been recommended on numerous occasions for the conservation of area sensitive species; our results suggest high forest cover also may benefit species that do not appear to be area sensitive.

From the supplier: Two colonies of Orange Oriole (Icterus auratus) asynchronous nests were found in Si'an Kaan Biosphere Reserve, Quintana Roo, Mexico, on Jul 4, 1988. One of the colonies had 30 to 35 nests in trees located in an 80 by 30 meter area, while the other one had 26 to 30 nests in a 60 by 25 meter area. Although colonial nesting has been reported for other Icterine species, it has not been reported previously for I. auratus. The discovery is an important contribution to the scant knowledge on the breeding biology of the species.

These species are relatively widespread in the mountains of southern California. Additional species recently observed in the Sierra San Pedro Martir in summer remain as unconfirmed breeders in Baja California [Northern Saw-whet Owl (Aegolius acadicus) and Townsend's Solitaire (Myadestes townsendi)] or all of Mexico [Hermit Warbler (Dendroica occidentalis)]. From the author: We investigated the use by Brown-headed Cowbirds (Molothrus ater) of five forest edge types and the forest interior of Green Ridge State Forest in the ridge and valley physiographic province of Maryland. Habitats were sampled, and breeding birds counted at each site. Cowbirds were detected in all habitats except forest interior; occurring most frequently in forest-brush (50.0% of points), -stream (46.3%), and -powerline (33.3%) edges. Among edge types, snag BA was also significantly (P [less than] 0.01) higher at forest-powerline, -brush, and -stream edges than at forest-open road and -closed road edges. These habitats had high total vegetation volume (TVV), with which bird and host species abundances were positively associated. However, high TVV was not always indicative of high snag BA. With all habitats combined, bird species abundance, total vegetation volume (TVV), and foliage height diversity (FHD) at a height of 1-2 m were significantly (P [less than] 0.05) higher at points where cowbirds were detected than at those where they were not detected, however only bird species abundance remained significant (P = 0.059) when forest interior was removed from the analysis. We propose that cowbirds in western Maryland select breeding areas based on: (1) distinct visible edges formed by canopy openings in the forest landscape, (2) occurrence of both high snag BA and high TVV at the forest edge, and (3) presence of high bird species abundance.

From the author: In early March, just prior to the onset of the breeding season, responses by Eastern Bluebirds (Sialia sialis) to playbacks of the territorial song of conspecifics are more likely on sites with two nest boxes rather than one. One or two boxes were placed randomly at potential territorial sites during early winter; so responsiveness is not explained by territoriality of the previous season. Explanations for our observations include that bluebirds prefer potential territorial sites with two boxes because of increased habitat quality or that bluebirds locate two-box sites more readily than one-box sites. We infer from our result that potential territorial sites with two nesting boxes are more attractive to bluebirds than sites with only one nesting box. Received 6 Sept. 1994, accepted 1 Dec. 1994.
