This book is the first informed overview of the restoration Venice has undergone in the last two hundred years, from the Austrian occupation to today. A great deal changed after the Fall of the Republic in 1797; how much is not realized by its visitors. Unique book.......2007-03-18

On my last visit, I became very curious about the layers of preservation, restoration, rennovation and new construction in Venice, especially as it related to the environmental forces that have always protected and battered the city. I couldn't quite make sense of it. But this book puts the construction trends & repair philosophies in a timeline -- Pertot's examples and detail are priceless, fascinating, and extremely enlightening -- even if this is your field. It is written by a preservationist, so it's highly opinionated. But it's also extremely wide-ranging and thorough -- so you can easily make your own conculsions. If you want to understand the particular physical structure of Venice, this is the best place to start. Great photos, too!

A Good Starting Point.......2002-03-01

This book is the best. It teaches basic drawing lessons and is most helpful for beginners. I love the illustrations and techniques used. I am studying computer art, so I found it to be most helpful. It is written in easy to use and understand text. It's great and is a good starting point! It shows how to draw different types of animals, insects, and even nature background scenery. It's a must have!

Warrior Nun Areala Pocket Manga #1 collects the regular comic series Vol. 1 issues 1 - 3 and Vol. 2 issues 1 - 3 in this full color graphic novel featuring one of Antarctic's most popular characters. The series was created, written and drawn by Antarctic press founder Ben Dunn. The book introduces us to Sister Shannon Masters, a nun who is part of an elite Catholic Church sect of soldiers known as Warrior Nuns who battle demonic evil in the never ending battle between good and evil. Sister Masters is showing remarkable proficiency as a fighter and the church soon assigns her two sectors in New York that are hers to guard. She's reassured that there has been no trouble in these sectors for many years...until now of course.

A powerful and centuries old wizard named Salvius Julianus has hatched a plot to sacrifice all of New York to free the fallen angel Lucifer from his prison. This does not sit well with Heaven or the rest of Hell for that matter. Hell fears Lucifer will again wage war on Heaven...a war which took Hell eons to recover from. The demon lord Orcus sends his servant, the beautiful demon princess Lillith forth to try and stop Julianus and his own cadre of wizards and demons. Sister Masters is drawn into the battle and soon finds herself imbued with the spirit of Areala, the first warrior nun and Valkyrie turned angel. She finds herself aided in battle by Shotgun Mary, a former warrior nun who left the order to fight evil in her own way, and Father Crowe, a member of the special order of magic priests. Lillith attempts to help the group as well but Areala sees the demoness as just as evil and rejects her help. It's a race against time to stop Julianus from releasing Satan.

I hadn't read this book when it originally appeared in regular comic format some 11 or 12 years ago but was pleasantly surprised. The story may not be complex and it's a bit light on character development but it's filled with action and sexy women swinging big broadswords and firing guns at ugly demons. In other words it's really fun. The secondary story has Areala out to fight a modern day group of Nazis who have allied themselves with demons. Dunn's art is best described as a cross between Manga and traditional American style comic art, as most books from Antarctic Press are and it's fantastic. Lively and dynamic and helped out by a team of bold colorists, the action truly leaps off the page. Great value too, being in the Manga format. Extremely well done!

No answer key.......2003-09-25

The book has no answer key.

The "Gregg Reference Manual 8th Edition" mentions that another book, the "Instructor's Guide to the Worksheets for the Gregg Reference Manual," contains an answer key to the "Worksheets on Grammar, Usage, and Style," but the "Instructor's Guide" is not available on Amazon. Sound confusing? It is!

A second set of worksheets, the "Comprehensive Worksheets," also does not include an answer key.

Beware! lest you spend your money on these useless worksheet books.

Excellent workbook.......2000-06-02

I found the worksheets to be very helpful (if you want to brush up your grammar.) I constantly use the Gregg Reference manual to end office disputes or confusion on grammar and style issues. And, since everyone can benefit from a quick course on grammar, found this a very helpful workbook.

In Service and Servitude explores the relationship between contemporary domestic service and the pursuit of the "good life" in an era of global economic transformation. The author offers an interdisciplinary approach to examining the in-migration of foreign domestic workers in Malaysia.

The book uses Malaysia as a case study of the role played by foreign domestics in a rapidly industrializing Asian country. Christine Chin discusses how the state elites and the middle classes come to rationalize the demand for-and treatment of-domestic workers while pursuing the country's modernity project, designed to create a stable, developed, multiethnic society. She shows how different and competing pressures on the regional, national, and household levels leave Filipina and Indonesian domestics open to mistreatment and abuse, most directly by employment agencies and employers. Chin argues that late-twentieth-century efforts to expand open markets and establish global free trade, encourage the exploitation of transnational migrant workers, and that such exploitation should not become an acceptable part of pursuing the "good life."

This well-written book examines a crucial topic that we know little. I especially like Chapter Five--it reveals many interesting--sometimes sad-- stories the hidden power struggles and resistance in the daily lives betwen maids and their employers. Worthy reading!

Life-cycle service was an essential institution in early-modern England that slowly died during the transition from a pre-industrial to a fully industrial economy. A socially pervasive and culturally broad movement of young people from their parental homes to live and serve in the homes of others, life-cycle service was integral to the demographic, economic, and social framework of the era and could not survive when that framework changed. This article examines the institution of life-cycle service, some of the underlying demographic, economic, and social structure that supported it, the changes in that structure that led to its demise, and the ramifications for young people of that demise. Although inevitable, the loss of life-cycle service with its broad social base denigrated service as an institution and was not without other costs especially for young women.

This is an essential book for parents of special children, and those who love and want to help them, but it is also one of the most moving personal stories I have ever read. It's said that "What doesn't break you makes you stronger," and Miriam Edelson's soul-making bravery is on every page of this book. It gave me courage, ideas, and inspiration, and I would recommend it to anyone on a similar journey, or to readers who want to know if their best hopes for human beings (and compassionate societies) can be tested by reality and endure, even flourish.

Wrong Edition.......2003-04-01

This is a republication, without the author's knowledge, of the 1984 Command and General Staff College textbook. Because that work is in the public domain, I am unable to control publication. However, readers interested in this topic would be better served by reading the revised and extended (through the year 2000) version, published by University Press of Kansas as Combined Arms Warfare in the Twentieth Century.

The essays selected by Beard ( from the 1930s) are timeless. Emil Ludwig's analysis of the fallacies and ironies of war ('victory makes the winner poorer'), Bertrand Russell's explanation for the decline of lyric love poetry (in a civilization dominated by the machine, serious treatment of mere passion is impossible') and his prescription for the future ('we must learn to use the machine without worshipping it'), Heindrik van Loon's case demonstrating that slavery is more disasterous for the slave-holder than for the poor serf and destroys the states sponsoring it, along with perceptive insights into labor, science, business, family, religion, war and peace by leading thinkers and doers of the Machine Age help explain the modern world of the Information Age.
