Great photos of America having fun.......2001-09-13

Over the past two years, in a personal examination of America's resolute
pursuance of the happiness to which it feels constitutionally entitled, Kate
Schermerhorn has photographed nearly a hundred parades and pageants across
the breadth of the continental USA. Her camera however never quite gets
around to recording glory of the spectacle, choosing instead to reach beyond
the razzmatazz and settle into the dust of the surrounding minutiae which
inform the structure of the whole. Intangibles such as concentration form a
fundamental part of the events: in Pasadena for example we find a perfectly
made up, high heeled, suspender and stocking clad gentleman applying the
final adjustments to his face paint before taking part in a parade. Lace
seems significant to a Hollywood Halloween party while a poodle in a pet
pouch across its owner's chest seems glued to a Washington tricycle race.
Taking the whole thing seriously is very much an issue here: there is a
commitment in the participants which is appreciated by the spectators. In
Phoenix Arizona for example spectators have brought living room furniture
out into their driveway and comfortably settled in to watch a parade: a
notion of communal spirit, both national and local flows throughout the
book. The High School Band rehearses in the back yard, while in Beaux Bridge
Louisiana a uniformly striped couple step seriously out for the annual
crawfish festival. The book opens with an image of Mount Rushmore, avoiding
the splendour and simply allowing the head of George Washington to break the
bottom of the frame. Whether he is to be viewed as sinking; or perhaps
resurfacing to once more regard the nation he fathered is a decision left to
the viewer. Quietly, behind it's humorous, light hearted, and gently
superficial veil, America's Idea of a Good Time asks some very subtle
questions. And as her Amish farmer rollerblades filmicly off into the sunset
I'm left with the conviction that Kate Schermerhorn's is a journey that's
only just begun. I look forward to her next book

An Affectionate Take on Americans at Play.......2001-07-21

Kate Schermerhorn has given us an affectionate look at Americans at play, in all their nutty glory. She highlights her subjects' quirkiness, to be sure, but never harshly. Her engaging, clever photographs convey a deliciously droll take on what it means to have fun - and what it looks like to watch others having it -- in today's America.

The Family Circus has been a staple of the funny pages for as long as I can remember, and the books are essentially collections of the cartoons, with a single one-panel cartoon appearing on each page.

For those not familiar, the Family Circus tracks the adventures of an all-American family consisting of a working dad, a stay-at-home (and very shapely!) mom, four young children and two dogs. Most of the humor comes from the interesting take children have on the world, often revolving around their misunderstandings, their innocent self-centeredness, or their insensitivity to their parents as human beings.

One nice thing about the paperback books that adds to the experience is the fact that we can better appreciate an ongoing storyline. In "I Can't Untie My Shoes!," we are treated to an extended visit from Grandma and Grandpa, and a longish sequence involving Christmas. Later one-shots mention New Year's Day and Valentine's Day, and I like that Keane took the time to give us this bit of continuity.

I find the gentle, often understated humor to be amusing, but a friend of mine says that it's the worst comic in the world. Whether or not you enjoy the Family Circus will probably have to do with whether you think the things little kids say are cute. This is an accurate portrayal of innocent toddlers in action; but if you're looking for something cutting edge, move on to something else.

A quick, excellent short course on effective writing........1999-11-04

I came across this book by accident when my boss left to take another position; he'll never see this little gem again! The authors have very effectively laid out the elements that make business writing, readable, understandable, and ultimately effective. They present several aspects of style, explain them, justify them, give good examples, and conclude with exercises to help the reader learn them.

I am just an accountant, and am certainly no aspiring novelist; this book was written right at my level and improved my writing significantly. By no means will this book turn anyone into a publisher or editor, but it can help any average person become an effective writer in the every day business world, which is precisely what it was designed to do.

The best book on improving writing skills.......1999-02-22

This book helps writers of all skills improve their writing. Its helpful tips about clarity and conciseness can be implemented immediately. I use this book daily in my work as an attorney. I recommend How to Take the Fog Out of Business Writing to anyone who has to write in their work.

Priceless Illustrated Napoleonic Resource.......2000-03-13

I've had this book since my mother purchased it for me in 1973 (hardbound); I've used it many times over the years as a most excellent resource for Napoleonic uniforms and historical reference. The book has proved invaluable for painting military miniatures as well as for writing college papers. I consider the book one of my few treasures. I'll never part with it.

Dont't Buy this Book.......2000-07-09

Don't buy this book. Half (160 of 320 pages) is devoted to material on behavior and general characteristics, that is too simplified for a biologist (or veteran birder) and too detailed for some one seeking identification of new species. The identification sections show 7 birds per page, without size or habitat perspective. The illustrations are accurate to the extent of my observations, and range maps are shown on the ID pages. The print is about 6 point, and I simply could not read it in the field. The authors are obviously expert and anxious to please, but this book will not please anyone.
