      4 out of 5 stars C-A-M-P.......2002-04-04

This book has fabulous photos of quite an interesting mix of models, celebrities, socialites, and jet-setters of the 1970s. But the true gems of this book aren't the photos (which, in classic Scavullo tradition are brilliant!); its the commentary. There are some great one liners as these women are interviewed on their beauty secrets. For instance : Jeri Hall "I try not to do drugs too often"...The campy nature of the lives of those in Vogue and Town and Country in this over-the-top decade are captured in this book. Get it if you can!

5 out of 5 stars Very Pleased With Purchase.......2003-06-26

This is a great book which arrived in excellent condition. I am looking forward to spending time reading and enjoying the photos as well as the text...

      5 out of 5 stars Beautiful..........2002-07-27

As a fan of the 70s and early 80s fashion I found this book to be beautiful. The women capture the look of that era and I was as interested to read about the lasting beauties (Brook Shields, Yasmine Bleeth, Carmen, Farrah Fawcett, Princess Caroline of Monaco) as I was about the stars whose celebrity glow has faded today.

The photos are beautiful. 46 women: models, housewives, journalists, actresses, business women, singers, schoolgirls, they all pose and tell their beauty secrets. There is a before and after make-up shot, with some photos showing and describing the stages in between. Some women are heavily made up while others go for the natural look. Their interviews are as compelling as their photographs. They describe how they perceive beauty, or they criticize it. They reveal their beauty secrets ("I cleanse with yogurt and soap and water. I use a natural unscented moisturizer...I like any kind of cream I can get from the health food store"-Beverly Johnson, "Working up a sweat every day. And going to the sauna. And getting laid once a night"-Janice Dickinson)

As excited as I was to see these beauties and read about their habits, I'm not sure whether a teenager would make out the difference between the girls that lead helthy lives and the ones that don't. Comments such as "I eat next to nothing" or "I never take off my makeup. NEVER. I sleep in it." or "I never look at myself in the mirror" do not promote a healthy lifestyle in my opinion and they are the reason so many young girls today have anorexia, bulimia and self-esteem problems.

But anyway. Fashion can be like that sometimes. To conclude, my favourite photos and interviews were by:

      GIA
      PATTI HANSEN
      CARMEN
      JANICE DICKINSON
      ORIANA FALLACI
      ANNE HEARST
      AILEEN MEHLE
      POLLY MELLEN
      JIL SANDER
      BROOKE SHIELDS
      LISA VALE

But the most important thing is that what's trully beautiful about these women is their individuality. If we all find what looks good on us and what makes us happy and healthy, we could all make it to the next Scavullo book! Buy it. Enjoy it.

                              Book Description

This book assesses the labor market consequences of privatization in developing countries (the Republic of Korea, India and Mexico) and transition economies (Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Eastern Germany and Hungary) during the first half of the 1990s. Based on over 20 case studies in seven countries, it considers the effect of privatization on productivity and on the level and structure of employment. The evolving patterns of industrial relations in privatized firms and the subsequent changes in wages, remuneration systems and non-wage benefits are also examined.

5 out of 5 stars Best patient-oriented book I've seen on the subject.......1998-06-02

A new book on fatiguing illness is off the presses, with surprisingly *little* fanfare.

I *highly* recommend this book to anyone interested in chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS,) its diagnosis, differential diagnosis, treatment and all other diseases that have fatigue as a major symptom.

Dr. Natelson is a professor of neurosciences at University of Medicine and Dentistry, New Jersey Medical School and director of the New Jersey Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Center. He is also a principle investigator of one of two federally funded CFS Cooperative Research Centers, along with being the medical director of the Gulf War Research Center of the Veterans Administration Medical Center in East Orange, New Jersey.

Aside from his excellent medical credentials, Dr. Natelson's presentation of what is known and not known about fatiguing illness in general and CFS in particular comes across loud and clear as ONE WHO KNOWS. This man *understands* He CARES.

In the early chapters, he does an excellent job of examining all the definitions, various terminology, and strengths and weaknesses of various research approaches.

Dr. Natelson looks at fatigue, weariness, neurasthenia, functional illness, and other fatiguing illnesses or reasons for fatigue that must be ruled out before the diagnosis of CFS is conferred. He does this in a non-jargonistic, careful, patient and easy-to-read manner. The chapters and topics are logically arranged and flow easily, and most importantly, he is not judgmental about any of the causes of fatigue.

He addresses those who have been exhausted all their lives, saying that this represents one extreme, just as the over-energetic represent another.

Dr. Natelson does an excellent job in discussing the medical causes of fatigue. He looks at chronic infection in general, then specifically as in AIDS, Lyme disease (fully recognizing the difficulties with lab tests and proper diagnosis in this disease), and tuberculosis. He looks at sleep disorders, again progressing from gen! eral to sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome.

He has quite a good outline on MS can be diagnosed, and the similar but distinctly different diagnosis of myasthenia gravis.

For MS, he says: "How does a physician make the diagnosis of MS in a patient who has not had repeated neurolgical problems separated from one another by periods of normalcy?" a frequent question. He goes on to state that the MRI becomes a diagnostic tool -- if the lesions are specific, in the "right" places and in the "right" pattern, then that "strongly suggests" MS.

But, he goes on to explicate the MRI abnormalities seen in CFS patients: Of 52 patients he studied, nine had the "tiny abnormalities" (commonly called UBOs) that were not specific enough to diagnose MS. Some time later he got in touch with 8; of those 8, three of them had doctors who had dropped the CFS diagnosis, but only two had a pattern of symptoms that pointed to MS. He postulates that patients with severe and chronic fatigue who have nonspecific MRI abnormalities may be in a different class, and may have a mild form of MS.

Of particular help, Dr. Natelson looks at the various terms and research, explaining "splitters" and "lumpers" and how these various categories have affected research. He even talks about the selection of normal controls and some of the problems.

He has several very good chapters on practical things to do, including one on understanding the doctor. I know, I know, some of us really bristle at the idea of our having to take time to understand somebody we are paying a hefty sum of money to help us!! But, this chapter gives insights into how we can better choose a doctor who WILL help, and also how to communicate more effectively with the ones who DO help. He pulls no punches with regard to how the training process, particularly in the past several years with the huge technological and information explosions in medical science, has been less than perfect! in producing the old-fashioned "physician" -- the guy or gal who holds your hand and leads you through the complexities of being sick EVEN IF he or she cannot cure you.

Dr. Natelson looks thoroughly at chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), what it is and what it isn't, and the role of depression before or after the fact or not at all.

He encourages support groups, coaches, experimentation. He is quite aware of all the limitations presently in the care and treatment of CFS, but does offer concrete suggestions about sleep, stress and anxiety reduction, exercise (moving rather than staying in bed kind), and why the various drugs work or don't work.

Dr. Natelson mentions looking into alternative treatment and medications, with some frank discussion about the benefits and pitfalls. His guiding principle seems to be six weeks -- if *whatever* it is you are taking or doing does not show obvious improvement or benefit in six weeks, then stop. He also warns about the many false promises accompanying many of the alternative treatments and the psychological and emotional toll that takes.

In all of his treatment talk, alternative or "standard" he mentions costs and cost-benefit analysis as one of the major determining factors.

All in all, this is a no-hype, honest look at all sides of the issues surrounding CFS, with practical tips based on his experience in treating and supporting the most severely ill patients.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to read, informative CFS book.......1998-05-14

I can't say I found the latest research to be very encouraging, but it helps to know where we stand. I've been ill with CFS for 2 years and a patient of Dr. Natelson for a year. The book accurately represents his approach and attitude toward his patients. I particularly like how he clearly differentiates between CFS, depression, and other fatiguing illnesses. It's very heartening (and easier to get well) when a doctor tells you that you really are sick and no, it's not all in your head.

Hi, I was planning on buying this book, but happened to see it at the Wichita Public Library. The book is full of old pictures, both of the forts while in use, and from the 1960's when the bood was written. The amount of data is great, and the book itself is well written. The book is written at medium level, enough detail so that you understand why the forts are built like they were, but not so much that you fall asleep. I have visited Fort MacArthur in Los Angeles and Fort Morgan near Mobile Alabama, so I have seen examples of the book's subject.

A wonderfully written book that will interest anyone that has visited one, or more of the many old forts up and down the East Coast of the United States. This book will be extremely fascinating to anyone with the least bit of curiosity about old forts. The author is very knowledgable about the subject matter and does a brilliant job of conveying information in a way that makes it understandable to an amateur, while still being insightful to a professional in the field of coastal fortification history.

Ray Lewis has provided a super walk through the history of seacoast artillery in America. Nobody has done it better.

                                5 out of 5 stars Ray Lewis's Home Run.......2000-08-27

In the thirty years since this book was published, one always hoped another would equal or surpass it. None has, or perhaps ever will. It is a marvelous history of the Forts along the American Seacoast, both Atlantic and Pacific, and even the Phillipines. Any Fort enthusiast MUST read this book. The author captures so much information, so many views, so much perspective in so few pages, the book is breathtaking. It is easily the finest book on its chosen subject, which is why it never goes out of print. If Forts interest you, Read it. Period.

The photographs from the author's collection, the army's files, the National Archives, etc. are worth its price. But the text, the clear delineation of the periods of Fort Building since 1794 in the US, and the differentiation of the periods, are so worth while.

Ray manages to be both terse, and pithy. It is a great tribute to any author to say that.

This is a MUST read for anyone interested in the subject, even one only interested in their own local Fort, and how it relattes to the defense plans of the United States when it was built.

There is NO better book to read on the subject. None.

It contains many excellent photographs of representative fortifications. A must have for those interested in military fortifications, particularly those of the U.S

The question of what constitutes good and bad rulership in the central middle ages, in both theory and practice, is the linking theme in this latest volume of the Haskins Society Journal. The nine complementary papers range widely across the Carolingian world, Norman and Angevin England and southern Italy, and the Latin East, exploring contemporary attitudes to rule and rulers (especially kings), and the methods and symbolism of ruling, as well as the reputations of individual kings in modern historiography. This captivating book pays homage to the powerful sense of connection that we earthbound creatures have for those that soar. Lyanda Lynn Haupt, an ornithological researcher and birding teacher, beautifully describes the wide-eyed wonder found observing birds. She muses on the much-tarnished reputation of the starling, the sexed-up behavior of male woodpeckers that drives homeowners crazy, and the population explosion of crows in Northwest urban neighborhoods. This notable debut by a talented writer reveals a deft touch, sly humor, and an engaging ability to share her bountiful knowledge of things ornithological.

                                    5 out of 5 stars Birding Delights.......2004-09-13

In the final chapter of this sincere work, Lyanda Lynn Haupt slips in a quotation from Stephen Kellert that suggests her own aim in writing: "People will need to rekindle their capacity for experiencing wonder, inspiration, and joy from contact with the natural world". Such delighted sentiment permeates the work as a whole. Haupt celebrates the varied reactions she and her friends and family have to a set of birds which are not the celebrities of the avian world: starlings, crows, cormorants. Her vignettes combine her knowledge of birds, of the birdwatching community, and her personal experiences. Her first chapter ends by saying, "Birds will give you a window, if you allow them", and this book looks at the moment when the shutters swing open.

Her emphasis on human reaction to birds plays to her strengths as a writer. Some of her finest lines encapsulate the meaning of a visual impression while partially eliding the image itself: she writes of the snowy owl, after referring to the way every feature of its design is taken to an extreme (e.g., "impossibly sharp talons"), "They are all we can imagine them to be." Haupt's power and interest is less in physical description (although there are some vividly amusing analogies: the "scrunched" face of a Vaux's Swift makes the species "a little avian Pekinese"). Instead, she concentrates on the kinds of emotion and thought which any individual bird encounter can touch off for a watcher.

The limits of human understanding-and the charms of those limits-plays into a larger theme of the book. Haupt declares her intent to steer a course between the Scylla of scientific arcana and cold observation and the Charybdis of "response-ists" who attempt to experience and enjoy a world untainted by human names and knowledge. At times she can drift to one side or the other-either in the form of occasionally rote descriptions of nesting habits or overly fanciful evocations of fairies-and the relative success of the passages where the two impulses are balanced prove her own point. She conveys her delight in the way the Varied Thrush produces its distinct song as gracefully as she does her experience of the song itself.

Ultimately, this book depends on an audience looking to evoke a joy previously experienced, to explore a familiar enchantment and comprehend it better. Haupt, as one who has worked to induce that joy in others, has an intelligent grasp of its workings and vagaries. Her book warmly invites others to share in her insights and, through them, re-experience their own delights.

5 out of 5 stars Enchanting thoughts on another world.......2002-04-07

Human beings often think of the human world as the central point from which all earthly existence radiates, with birds and other animals mere background. Lyanda Lynn Haupt sweeps the reader effortlessly into another world-- the world of birds. By bringing the daily habits, troubles and foibles of birds of the Pacific Northwest to light, and painting these birds in refreshing verbal watercolors, the author succeeds in showing humans that the bird world is not a backdrop to human existence but a whole other sphere of existence unto itself. She muses about the supernatural qualities of the hermit thrush's song, the humorous (by human standards) mating dance of the blue grouse, the hyperactivity of the missile-like swift, even the dual nature of the lives of migratory birds who can be at home in two radically different places in the span of one year. Read this book and be drawn into a separate world of avian wonder!

                                    5 out of 5 stars Extraordinary!.......2002-02-19

As an amateur birder, I will never look at birds (ordinary and otherwise) in the same way again. Wonderfully written. Can't wait for the next one.
I checked this book out of the library - but will be purchasing it for myself and my darling daughter who got me into birding.

                                    5 out of 5 stars enchanting!.......2001-11-21

As someone who enjoys watching and identifying birds, this book naturally caught my interest. Once reading, I couldn't wait to get to the next essay! The book gives more meaning to my encounters with ALL birds. And just when one might be tempted to say or think "It's only a silly Starling (or Crow, or Sparrow, etc.)," amazing and wondrously described details about these birds' history, biology, taxonomy, behavior, or physiology will not only prompt one to seek out ordinary birds, but experience them on a different level. It has been similar to studying music, and subsequently gaining an appreciation for it that only those who "know" can understand. It's funny, incredibly informative, and a perfect read for anyone interested in the feathered creatures that are right out in the open with us every day. Enthusiastically recommended!
