goooooood.......2007-09-23
It's a great material!!!! a great research book and reference!!! there really are few chances for people in arts field to gain the knowlege this book provide. Usually the best way is real life observation, but you don't have a model any time you want to draw, do you? so this book is a great material when you don't have that chance and a guide for those who want to improve his work with a real model.
My only complaint is the poor contrast on the pictures. It doesn't have to show deep black shadows but a little bit more of contrast could emphasize better different muscular groups. Any way, most of reference books are the same at end, but not this one!!! Foreshortenig is one of the hardest views to archive for artists (painters, art and human figure students, comic book artist and illustrators, etc)
Atlas of Foreshortening: The Human Figure is Deep Perspective.......2006-08-07
The book is okay. My biggest beef is that a lot of the poses that the models are in are pretty boring and could have been more interesting. They seemed pretty repetative to me as well. However, it does over insight on the muscles shapes formed when looking at the body from deep perspective. You can then takes that and push it to your needs.
It could have been better but it's not bad.
Exellent!.......2005-09-22
This is the book I've been searching for for years! Most art photo reference books will either give you very standard standing, lying, walking poses or very artistic poses(ie unclear) . This book has clear photos of the body in unusual positions. There's a wide variety of poses and sections. Both male and female models.
I cannot recommend this book highly enough. It's a must for those who can't afford to hire a model everyday.
Very useful.......2004-06-11
There are lots of visual reference books out there. It would be easy to populate a bookshelf with them. After a while, though, they start to look the same.
Not this one. Heavily foreshortened poses are the hardest (for me at least), so this book devotes itself to genuinely distinctive views. It may sound like distortion to describe an arm or leg as being a third length of the other. In fact, it is distortion if they are the same length, when viewed from some angles.
This book gives an uncommon perspective - it has earned its place on my shelves.

Wonderful Reference Book.......2002-09-30
I have been using Mark Edward Smith's two excellent photographic references as a source for practicing figure drawing over the last year or so. I was a bit hesitant to buy this book - afraid that it might just be duplicating what I already have - but once it arrived in the mail I was really glad that I did. The quality of the photography is *fantastic* and it's printed on a glossy stock which preserves the halftones and detail which unfortunately sometimes get 'washed out' in Smith's books.
The range of poses is great too - from some very classical poses to some really "out-there" angles and poses which border on contortionism. Some of the most beautiful poses in this book are ones which a live model couldn't hold for more than 2-5 minutes, so having it captured on paper is a real bonus. All in all, I wuold say that the combination of poses and camera angles provides a fantastic reference work for studying the muscles of the body in various states of tension and compression.
I think I'm going to be spending lot of time drawing from this book.

Book Description
"Bulldogs in Bloom" reveals for the first time the exquisite aesthetic sensibility of this widely misunderstood breed, whose representatives are here portrayed in the midst of their secret gardens. Every soft petal and tender frond is the fruit of their own horticultural labors. This beautiful book proves that, in the case of bulldogs, "Iron Butterfly" is no oxymoron.

Full of music.......2003-11-02
I have taken this out of the library on a number of occasions and found this a truly great song book. We did the production at the start of the year and this was a hit! Totally memorized most of the songs. Check it out and see for yourself!
What a good book!.......2002-01-13
This is great for people doing the show!
While it has cut out certain parts of the music, it sounds great when played. The accompaniment is well done.

Amazon.com
Fame led the parade of dance films in the early 1980s, and its Oscar-winning score by Michael Gore and Dean Pitchford holds up very well. This book includes all the major numbers from the film, including the throbbing title tune (also an Oscar winner), the funky "Hot Lunch Jam," the youth anthem "I Sing the Body Electric," and that staple of '80s vocal recitals, "Out Here on My Own." Even the solo piano ballad "Ralph and Monty (Dressing Room Piano)" is here. Serious fans know that Paul McCrane sang "Is It Okay If I Call You Mine?" (which he wrote) and "Dogs in the Yard" years before he became Dr. "Rocket" Romano on television's ER. --David Horiuchi

This book is vocal selections from the movie. It is great for what it is. Out Here on my Own, I Sing the Body Electric, and the title song, Fame, are all fantastic. However, if you would like better songs with the same kind of theme, try Vocal Selections from Fame The Musical!

Product Description
Book of piano/vocal/chords music from the musical Fame.
Book Description
This book crystallizes and extends the important work Wiebe Bijker has done in the last decade to found a full-scale theory of sociotechnical change that describes where technologies come from and how societies deal with them. Of Bicycles, Bakelites, and Bulbs integrates detailed case studies with theoretical generalizations and political analyses to offer a fully rounded treatment both of the relations between technology and society and of the issues involved in sociotechnical change.
The stories of the the safety bicycle, the first truly synthetic plastic, and the fluorescent light bulb - each a fascinating case study in itself - reflect a cross section of time periods, engineering and scientific disciplines, and economic, social, and political cultures. The bicycle story explores such issues as the role of changing gender relationships in shaping a technology; the Bakelite story examines the ways in which social factors intrude even in cases of seemingly pure chemistry and entrepreneurship; and the fluorescent bulb story offers insights into the ways in which political and economic relationships can affect the form of a technology.
Bijker's method is to use these case studies to suggest theoretical concepts that serve as building blocks in a more and more inclusive theory, which is then tested against further case studies. His main concern is to create a basis for science, technology, and social change that uncovers the social roots of technology, making it amenable to democratic politics.
Inside Technology series
Customer Reviews:
Cycling into social history.......2000-05-27
Bijker's case studies could be read as fascinating histories of technology, but their strength lies in the analysis of the chosen artefacts. Bicycle presents mechanical technology, bakellite chemical and the fluorescent lighting electrical; the cases are also different in their approach: bicycle is discussed from end user viewpoint (who rode the bicycle and how); bakelite is a story of an inventor and a birth of a new industry, whereas the bulb presents a case of an established industry going through a turbulent technological renewal.
Bicycle was not a useful thing: it was a completely useless hobby of a few inventors and daredevils, and Bijker traces the developments that made the bicycle an indispensable form of transportation. The case offers hilarious deja vu: bicycle means death of distance ! Before the safety bicycle established itself as the dominant design, bicycle races and speed tests were used for advertising, not unlike the PC performance tests that were numerous not too many years ago.
Bakelite and Baekeland are described in a "heroic innovator" way, but taking into account historical context, professional trajectories of the involved scientists and the dead ends and failed experiments. Synthetic resin business is also covered.
Fluorescent lighting case shows how the invention goes through various phases before it is established as we know it today. In the case of fluorescent lighting, things developed rapidly between 1938 and 1940 and the lamp transformed itself from low intensity lamp for coloring purposes to energy saving lamp to high intensity daylight lamp. The power struggle within the industry is obvious because the lamp supplier got only 4% of profits in incandescence lighting but 24% in fluorescent case, with the share of the utility dropping from 80% to 44%.
Bijker's approach calls for identifying all relevant social groups, and these are very different in the different cases: sewing machine makers were important in bicycle manufacturing because of related skills and economic downturn in their major business; but non-users of bicycles were also important (because they were, by definition, numerous in the beginning). Sports cyclists, touring cyclists, elderly men and women all had special requirements, like sideways sitting and pedaling designs for women riding in long skirts.
The style is ready readable, and background science is suitably discussed. Enjoyable book !

LONGEST WINTER
ASIN: 1862273553 |
Book Description
The first major biography, exhaustively researched from new material including major revelations involving his previously unknown and secret private life, of Lawrence Edward Grace 'Titus' Oates who became a dashing cavalry officer and hero in the Boer War, a successful jockey and who paid £1,000 to join Scott's doomed South Pole expedition, before becoming a national hero for sacrificing himself to save his comrades
Substantial new information from previously undisclosed sources is included in this new study especially relating to his clashes with Scott. Having paid £1,000 to join Scott's South Pole expedition, Oates was at center stage in the unfolding tragedy, becoming a national hero for sacrificing himself to save his comrades. There is also resh analysis of his military career, both as hero in the Boer War, where he was denied a VC, and later in Ireland. A different perspective from the traditional myth of Scott's heroic failure and Oates' suicide is offered, examining Oates' private life and the role of his austere mother who exerted a powerful influence during his life and continued to control his memory long after his death.
Beautifully illustrated with maps and photographs, many previously unpublished

Customer Reviews:
She's excited about English.......2007-10-08
I used to teach middle and high school grammar. This, however, did not prepare me for the job of teaching a first grader. I knew where I wanted her to go, but not how to get her started. This book was recommended, and I tried it with a "wait and see" attitude. It seems rather dull at first glance. There are no bells and whistles, no cutesy techniques. Simply, put, however, my six-year-old loves English. I've come to appreciate the wisdom of the narration exercises and the picture discussions. It has been a pleasant surprise for both of us. My daughter's skills in both speech and narration improved within a few lessons, and she loves memorizing the poems (they are well chosen for this age group). She never balks when I ask for her to restate things in complete sentences. Personally, I like the instructor dialogue. It's become a mental guide even after the book is closed for the day. The lessons are very repetitive, but that is another plus in our case. Six-year-olds actually like that. I get a little bored, but she doesn't, and that's what matters. The bottom line for me is always the same: Is she developing? Does she ask for more? Yes and yes. My third grader is now using her next book with similar results.
Horrible book...........2007-09-05
I'm not a fan of books that tell the instructor exactly what to say and leave little or no room for instruction to be geared towards a student's abilities, but even if I was I would hate this book. The poem/reading selections are lacking, and they overkill on repetition without introducing new concepts in a timely manner. After 5-6 lessons the author has introduced the concept of a noun as well as common and proper nouns. Then she continues to repeat this information for the next 40 lessons before pronouns are introduced.
Useful, but overly specific.......2007-06-21
I like the memory work and the grammar in this book. My girls have learned alot of poems by heart and they can tell you the definitions of the nouns and verbs etc. I don't like, however, that each lesson is dragged out for so long. My kids started this book at the ages of 4 and 6 last year and are still using it, though less frequently now. They really don't need a week or more to learn each lesson, so we skip alot in this book. I also don't like the re-done versions of certain classics like the "Sunday's Child" poem. So we looked up the original online to teach them instead.
It's amazing what your child can learn with this book.......2007-06-18
I must admit that we do not use this book exclusively. I partner it with another language arts program and phonics instruction, so we end up using First Language Lessons about twice a week. Even so, I have seen amazing benefits from using this book.
First Language Lessons introduces the parts of speech, poetry memorization, narration, and dictation/copywork. I have found it to be a very gentle and enjoyable introduction to grammar for my child. You might not think that learning the difference between common and proper nouns, for example, is very important at a young age, but I have found that it has assisted my daughter's writing. Instead of simply telling her that a word has to be capitalized, I can now remind her that a word is a proper noun and she is able to make the corrections herself. Language and grammar rules are starting to make sense to her, simply because she has memorized a few key definitions.
My daughter especially likes learning the poems. I like how easy it is for me to teach since it is scripted for the parent. Would I use this as a stand-alone language arts program? Probably not. But it has been a useful supplement for us.
Useful product, beware of adulterated poetry and simplistic prose.......2007-05-20
Useful product, beware of adulterated poetry
I have in fact been finding this book very useful. It introduces grammar concepts in a way that prepares a child for more intensive grammar lessons later on. It encourages narration and gives the new homeschooling parent all the help she could require in introducing love of proper English to the child. The lessons are very manageable and lareg homeschooling families can benefit from the little bites of wisdom suggested each day. I have found this book to be very helpful.
I find that the stories written by the authors use simplistic language. Most classical curriculums recommend writers such as Andrew Lang, Beatrix Potter and Thornton Burgess as read aloud material at this age level. I fail to understand why such well educated women as Susan Bauer and Jessie Weiss insist on writing in a style that is so inferior to the style of prose they would recommend to parents to read to their children.
I was very upset when I saw that one of the poems was changed from the original without mention of this fact anywhere in the book. The poem by Christina Rossetti had two lines removed and one line changed. The beautiful imagery and wording used by Christina Rosssetti was removed at the most poignant of instances. I would have preferred that my children learn the superior original and be able to partake in what Christina Rossetti wanted the children to have.
I felt that my children had been gypped and I have ever since regarded any product by the Weiss-Bauer family with great suspicion.

Customer Reviews:
He's getting it.......2007-10-08
We bought this after my first grader's successful results with the first book. It is sytematic, comprehensive, and the language is not overly simplified. The author doesn't condescend to my third grader, a voracious reader who recognizes "dumbed down" speech and writing and is turned off by it. New material is presented in a no-nonsense, sequential manner, and as each new part of speech is studied, it is also diagrammed. My analytical son really likes that. The emphasis on dictation was a useful surprise. I didn't realize he had a tough time summarizing until we encountered these lessons. This book both diagnosed and addressed weaknesses I didn't know he had due to his extremely high reading ability. I'm very pleased with this one. Note: I tried to use the teacher edition only, but it was a hassle. I broke down bought the workbook and it made things much easier.
Sensational Language Arts Book.......2007-09-15
I am a homeschooling granny and have tried numerous Language Arts Programs. Out of all the programs I have tried this is the best by far in my opinion. In addition to the 8 parts of speech this program also covers the following.
Parts of a book, Initials, Titles of Respect, Punctuations, Direct/Indirect quotations, Diagramming of Sentences, Contractions, 6 Nonfiction Narration Exercises, 6 Poem Memorizations, Writing Letters, Dictionary Skills, Alphabetizing by first, second, and third letter, Syllables and phonetic spelling, Synonyms and antonyms (using a thesaurus)and Avoiding double negatives
I would say this is a pretty comprehensive program. The only complaint I have about this programs is that in order to use it effectively. For variety I sometimes use worksheets from softbasics software and find that I will have more than enough materials to last two or more years

This is a very well written book and just as fun as the First Language Lessons for 1st and 2nd grade. We love it!
Much Respect Excellent Program.......2007-08-26
I am a homeschooler and have tried several grammar books and programs before purchasing this one because this level did not exist when I originally started searching for a language program for my children I'd previously used level 1 & 2 of this program.
I purchased Easy Grammar Daily Guided Review grade two and the author of that great program said to use it for grammar warmups. The search was on and I discovered that this book exists. Volume 4 is in the stage of being created now.
I give it 5 stars because it is an exceptional language arts program, it teaches the 8 parts of speech, alphabetization up to the third letter in a word, dictionary skills, letter writing and many other important skills. For a comprehensive list and overview see [...]. If you go to [...] they have a 50 page student book and a 89 page instructor's manual so you can try before you buy.
For variety I sometimes use worksheets from softbasics software and find that I will have more than enough materials to last two or more years. When I combine that program with this book I know that I am giving my children a well rounded langauage arts program that I can be proud of for years to come.
Wonderful books.......2007-08-23
I used "First Language Lessons for the Well-Trained Mind" for grades 1 and 2 and was thrilled that Jessie Wise came out with a book for grade 3. I wasn't, however, thrilled that I now had to purchase a second "workbook", but I did it anyway and BOY! am I glad I did. This workbook makes grammar a breeze. It is well worth the money. Trying to duplicate everything on paper would be more headache than I am prepared to put up with (I homeschool more than one child and time is treasured). The text itself is very comprehensive and challenging. We are into our second week of school and I am loving this product. I highly recommend.
