It's a cool book that shows us many curious aspects of the japan tattoo history and tradition.
But, in another way, there's a lack of variety of photos, like koi fish and masks for example.

Horioshi work speaks for itself and this book is an impressive tribute to it. The pictures are fantastic and it's very nice to see that the family business has its heritage assured.

This book is a great reference for tattoo artists and other artists that enjoy the art of Japanese tattooing. It displays full page photographs (including close ups) so you can see the detail and subject matter quite well.

It appears to be the sad fate of English-language books on the Japanese tattoo that they so rarely combine all the desired publishing strengths--first-rate photography, unique insights, disciplined writing, and careful documentation--in a single volume. And this is disappointingly the case with Takahiro Kitamura's "Bushido: Legacies of the Japanese Tattoo." The book includes, as previous reviewers have noted, stunningly beautiful photographs, and it benefits mightily from the personal access of Kitamura (who tattoos as the artist Horitaka) to modern practitioners of the Japanese tattoo. However, it is also the case that only a minute percentage of the book's illustrations are captioned and explained, the text keeps shifting perspective and voice, and the glossaries and index are inadequate.
As Kitamura has proved in both "Bushido" and his "Tattoos of the Floating World," the Japanese tattoo deserves to be regarded as a serious art form. It also deserves to be presented to the public by mainline art publishers who employ the best designers and the best color separation technology. To achieve this, the time has come for talented and passionate specialists like Kitamura to consider teaming with professional art writers who flourish outside the confines of the tightly-knit tattoo community.

Best tattoo book I've ever seen. Large, colorful pictures, detailed descriptions, and beautiful artwork. I had to drive all the way to Japantown in San Francisco to find the book because it's out of print or something, but it was worth the wait. Pick this up, you won't be disappointed...

This book is a great introduction to the ideas of propaganda, its purpose,
its goals, its dangers, etc. It doesn't pretend to be an authority.
Instead, it serves only to introduce the reader on the generalities of propaganda,
laying the foundation for a more serious inspection. I highly recommend it for
anyone unfamiliar with the subject.

Comprehensive Resource with real Success Story for Parents with Children with an LD........2007-09-14
I am a mother of four children, one of which is age four, and is delayed in his speech. This book has been a Godsend for me. It not only covers speech issues but all learning disabilities, giving useful information on how to direct your child to achieving a successful and fulfilling life. I know the biggest key to a child's success in life is their self-esteem, and Glechner, as a mother of three, was able to help navigate her son through the turbulant experiences a child with learning disabilities faces (with teachers, peers and even family who don't understand and misinterpret behaviors) and guide him to success as a high-school honors student and college graduate. I think that you will find this an encouraging resource. I don't have much time on my hands, and don't often read a book cover to cover due to time constraints, but because I value my son, I read this book every chance I get and it is covered with all my notes to self and penmarks to research terms more on the internet to gain a better understanding, etc. I hope that you purchase this book, it will help you better understand and decide what avenue to take for your child to see them personally succeed!

The uniqueness of
Child and Adolescent Life Stories lies in the multiple perspectives drawn from youth, their parents, and their teachers. These perspectives provide a range of lenses through which a student or beginning teacher may view child and adolescent development. The complex processes of development occur within a social context, and therefore a professional teacher, administrator, or school psychologist will need to be able to view developmental stages from youths’ perspectives as well as from their various social settings.
The twelve cases in this book were compiled from interviews and observations done with youth, their parents, and their teachers. The cases were then written from multiple perspectives, allowing the reader an opportunity to understand the influence of family, school, and society on the youths’ development. Each case tells a youth's life story, including the events and relationships that have influenced the child and his or her cognitive, social, and emotional development. The youth in these cases represent a cross section of ages and socio-economic levels and exhibit diversity in their ethnic backgrounds, religious/spiritual beliefs, gender, family structures, and disabilities.
The cases are intended to elicit discussion on a wide range of issues in development. To this end, this book explores many critical (and sometimes controversial) topics, such as teen pregnancy, sexual orientation, disabilities, child abuse, domestic violence, death of a parent, and more. This will allow instructors the greatest possible flexibility in supplementing their courses with life histories and cases. These cases are the perfect illustration of the complexity of a full life history.

A unique and powerful book for single mothers raising sons.......2007-07-22
Let me start with the bottom line: Every single mother faced with the daunting task of raising a male child from boy to man should read this book. Cederick Tardy, writing from his own personal experiences as a son who brought a world of grief to his over-matched, though well intentioned mother, delivers an intimate, yet objective and authoritative, book of advice aimed at helping other women and their sons to anticipate and avoid negative outcomes in their relationships. Tardy is brutally honest about just how far out of hand he got, including self-destructive forays into substance abuse, drug dealing and violence (including a suicide attempt), even as his mother took steps after her divorce from Tardy's father aimed at improving their quality of life. Thankfully, by the grace of God, Tardy survived to tell the tale--but too many young men don't, winding up emotionally, spiritually and even physically destroyed. I, too, was raised by a divorced single mother, and while I never engaged in the delinquent behavior Tardy did, both my mother and I (and my brother) would have benefited greatly had she had access to the advice provided in "The Big Payback." If you are a single mother, buy and read this book. And if you know a single mother trying to raise a male child (or male children), you couldn't bless her (and her children) with a greater gift.

Excellent, easy to read resource!.......2006-06-15
A colleague referred me to this book when she used it in a class. I have a two year old in child care and teach elementary school, so this book offered a good perspective for me to look at my daycare from the parent eyes (confirming my impression about the good job they do)and a clear reminder of ways to interact with the parents of my students. For people coming into caregiving jobs, it offers easy to read guidance and offers a perspective that opens up a door to compassion rather than frustration or resentment. For people who have been in these fields, it offers a good reminder of basics. My paraprofessionals and I have gotten a lot out of it, and I would highly recommend it.

When President Abraham Lincoln issued his call to arms in 1861, the 63rd, 69th and 88th New York Volunteers were among the first to step forward to defend the Union. Comprised primarily of first and second generation Irish immigrants, these three regiments were later joined by the 28th Massachusetts and the 116th Pennsylvania. Although many of these Irish men were decidedly antiLincolnblaming the northern abolitionists as much as the southern rebels for the nations plightthey worked around their dilemma by pledging their allegiance to their new country and its flag rather than its president. Suffering heavy casualties, this Irish Brigade under the command of Thomas Francis Meagher became one of the most legendary fighting groups of the Civil War. This work provides a balanced, historically factual picture of the Irish Brigade and its commander by re-examining and re-interpreting existing accounts. It presents an unbiased account of the role that the Brigade played in the confrontations, during the Seven Days battles, at Sharpsburg, Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville. The author examines the ways in which contemporary sources distorted the historical actualities regarding the Irish Brigadeattempting to write into the annals of legend a story which needed no embellishmentand the tempering effect which chronological distance has produced, resulting in more critical and dispassionate publications. The effect of politics and political manipulation on the Irish regiments is also discussed. Sources range from memoirs published by brigade veterans in the years immediately following the war to letters and memoirs published as recently as 1996.

This last volume of Proceedings in the Opening Session of the Long Parliament covers the period from 19 July through 9 September 1641. Both houses were by now growing thin as weary lords and commoners began to leave London for families in the countryside, knowing they would be back in the city by October. The king left for Edinburgh in August, not to return until autumn. In closing up for the recess the parliamentary body lost nothing of the work started, even while negotiating the final arrangements for peace with Scotland. The reader is again struck by the committee structure and the means for handling personal and somewhat private naturalization bills while at the same time keeping on track the major public bills regarding episcopacy and the nature of the Council and courts.
