Don't take them on their word. Get a contract signed!.......2007-07-20
I have only serious clients who are willing to pay me because I take a contract to our first meeting and make them sign it. These contracts will protect you and your clients! They are worded with the legal stuff but easy to understand. He even explains what it all means. It even has a CD so you can pop it in your computer right before your meeting (as I have done) and print a contract.
Must have for freelance designers!.......2004-07-31
In starting out and gathering information it's hard to determine what books will be helpful. This is great. It is filled with tear out forms you can make copies of and use over and over. Great information. And the CD-ROM includes all the forms in pdf format, as well as Pagemaker and Quark XPress so that you can make changes to fonts and style, logo additions, and more, to suit your own home business. Files are compatible with Mac and IBMC platform, which is great for me being a designer working mostly on an IBM computer. Excellent book!
It's a $29.95 Lawyer!!.......2004-02-20
Our small graphic design firm had been relying on the legal forms and contracts from this book for about one year. Finally, we decided that perhaps we ought to visit with a lawyer to make sure we were doing it right...$560.00 later for an initial consultation, we realized that this $29.95 book was the best business investment we'd ever made! The lawyer confirmed that the contracts that we had been using were airtight and were great (he had a few other pointers...but, none worth $560.00).
We have had many comments from our clients that over all the creative teams they'd worked with over the years, our design firm had surpassed them all in business professionalism. If you are serious about running a firm, or just want to protect yourself, you really can't go wrong with this book! Such a small investment for such a large return!
Buy it, you won't be sorry........2002-10-29
This book has EVERYTHING you need ... and then some. When you think you're not going to need one of the forms in this book, you later realize that YOU DO! As a freelance artist, using these forms made me feel as though clients noticed that they were dealing with a real professional. Absolutely a great investment.
Useful Guide.......2002-09-08
While I probably won't use too many of these forms directly out of the book (or off the included CD), I find every form filled with helpful tools and ideas. Since purchasing this book, I have used a number of the forms just a guides for creating my own.
While I can understand that people might be disappointed that the forms included on the CD use fonts that not everyone has, as a designer, I would strongly recommend that you get those fonts anyway. If you are serious about being a successful graphic designer, you can't rely on the default fonts that come with your computer (besides, Helvetica is a great and well-crafted font).
Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the business side of graphic design, or anyone who is interested in covering their behind (protection from those eventualities such as uncooperative clients).

Customer Reviews:
OUTSTANDING.......2007-07-13
Between this book and Kiln Construction by Joe Finch you can build a very succesful pottery kiln. The information within is nothing less than outstanding in understanding the various kiln options being used around the world. This is a must have book for those with an interest in kilns or in building their own pottery kiln.
Build your own kiln.......2007-03-13
This book was recomended by a college instructor who worked directly with author. I highly recomend this book if you want to build your own kiln.
The Kiln Book.......2006-07-02
This book is beautifully written and very informative. It gives detailed instructions about building several different kilns. It is a good buy.
THE one and only GOOD book about kilns.......2004-02-22
This is a fantastic book, even if you are NOT going to build a kiln. This book is packed with cool stuff and good pictures. When I built my kiln (a 4.5 foot gas raku) this was the only book I used. All the other kiln books I have ever seen (a lot I sadly assure you) are complete garbage. This one on the other hand is a gem. Well worth every cent of the cost and very well written, this book is in my top 3 for ceramics books. It is an great book for begginers and ultra experienced potters alike. My one and only problem is that they barely even mention doors. Doors are not terribly important, compared to the other info, but this is a MAJOR fault with this book. I don't know if it will be revised, but that is one thing that is very bad.
the good= comprehensive, well written, cool pictures, good reading, covers all aspects, good resources, all around excellent book.
the bad= NO INFO ABOUT DOORS!!!! god I hate that...
the ugly= more color would be nice but... cheaper=better.
So, in spite of this books one glaring failure there is no better book for everything else covered. I love this book and would recommend it to anyone who is even interested in firing kilns. Great book, good buy, get it!
great book.......2000-05-16
If you are thinking about building, firing or repairing a kiln, this is the book. With a fair amount of firing experience, but little knowledge of building, this book gave me the info and guidance to help build my own wood kiln. Get this book.

Black and white plates!.......2007-05-12
Great descriptions, but all the interior plates are black and white! Of course, this is a major flaw in an art book on Giotto. Only three stars.

Book Description
After a century of growth, trade union membership and influence have begun to decline in most of the economically advanced countries. This comprehensive analysis of membership trends covers developing as well as industrialized countries. The author's thesis is that the unions have failed to pay sufficient attention to the concerns of a labor force that is more educated, with a higher participation of women, and with a greater concern for job security than was true in the past.
Book Description
Sihab ad-Din Ahmad bin 'Abd al-Qader's account of the early sixteenth century Jihad, or holywar, in Ethiopia, of Imam Ahmad bin Ibrahim, better known as Ahmad Gran, or the Left handed, is an historical classic. The Yamani author was an eyewitness of several of the battles he describes, and is an invaluable source. His book, which is full of human, and at times tragic, drama, makes a major contribution to our knowledge of a crucially important period in the hisoty of Ethiopia and Horn of Africa. 'Futuh al-Habasa,' or 'Conquest of Abyssinia' - which undoubtedly reflects the situation as it seemed to its Yamani author at the time of its composition. The forces of Imam Ahmad bin Ibrahim had occupied the greater part of Ethiopia. The resistance of Emperor Lebna Dengel had virtually come to an end, and many Christians had chosen to convert to Islam. The victorious Imam's regime seemed there to stay. This was, however, far from the end of the story. The Imam was killed in battle on February 21, 1543, whereupon his army almost immediately disintegrated. Those of his soldiers who could do so made their way back to the East. Not a few Muslim converts reverted to their former faith. The Futuh thus refers to a relatively short, though crucially important, period in Ethiopia's long history. The book is nevertheless valuable, in that its author was an eye-witness of many of the events he describes, and writes, as far as we can judge, with a degree of objectivity rare for his time. * * * What people say about this book: "This book is the first ever complete English translation of the Arabic account on the campaigns of Imam Ahmad b. Ibrahim al-Ghazi (popularly known as Gran) as written by the Yemeni jurist, Shihab al-din Ahmad b. Abd al-Qadir b. Salim b. Uthman (also known as Arab Faqih)... it is a welcome addition to the rich corpus of Arabic literary and historical sources relevant to the sixteenth-century Ethiopia and the Horn. It is particularly useful for English-speaking researchers and established scholars who cannot read either the Arabic text or the authoritative French translation prepared by Rene Basset...both Stenhouse and Pankhurst, and the publisher, deserve high commendation, respectively, for producing such a valuable work that represents a major contribution to the history of Ethiopia and the Horn, and for making it available to the wider English-speaking readership and scholarship." -- Hussein Ahmed is a Professor of History at Addis Ababa University. He is a leading historian of Islam in Ethiopia. * * * "In the history of conflict in Africa and beyond, "few stories of drama and human tragedy equal" Imama Ahmad's conquest of the Christian kingdom of Ethiopia (1529-1543). His short lived spectacular victories and determination to replace Christianity by Islam and the remarkable survival of Christianity in Ethiopia" is a story of epic proportions" which still generates strong emotion among both the Christian and the Muslim population of Ethiopia. In other words, Imam Ahmad's jihadic war besides being legendary was a major turning point... This is truly a wonderful work, which is destined to remain an indispensable source for the history of Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa during the first half of the tumultuous sixteenth century. Anyone interested in understanding the intensity and brutality of religious war will be rewarded by reading this classic." -- Mohammed Hassen is an Associate Professor of African history at Georgia State University in Atlanta. He is the author of The Oromo of Ethiopia: A History 1570-1860.
Customer Reviews:
A fascinating period, a disappointing presentation.......2006-09-18
The Futuh Al-Habasha is one of those vital primary sources for Ethiopian history: it is an account, based on eye-witness testimony, of the first part of Ahmad Gragn's Jihad and conquest of this montainous Christian kingdom; for this reason alone, I gave this book 4 stars. Having read accounts in countless general histories of this ancient land, I expected this book to tell a story to rival Hannibal's successes against ancient Rome (the role Ahmad Gragn is often cast in), or Alfred the Great's dogged resistence to the Vikings that had all but expelled him from England (the role Ethiopian Emperor Lebna Dengel is given). What I read was far different from either of these.
Shihab Al-Din Ahmad's prose style is best described as pedestrian. He views his topic with a moralistic bias that although unusual to Western readers (Christians are infidels, Muslims can do no wrong) is yet as shallow as any such bias. Honest and painfully accurate about his tale, Shihab Al-Din Ahmad nevertheless offers us no insight into Ahmad Gragn's -- let alone anyone involved in these long years of warfare and misery -- mind. The author is content to tell us little more than how Ahmad Gragn, with a handful of devout followers, defeated the Emperor of Ethiopia with his countless followers at almost every turn. He provides us no explanation -- except for an occasional platitudinous acknowledgement of Allah's favor.
What is worse, the scholarly notes to this book fail to pierce the barriers of the time and place of this book's creation, and leave the non-specialist reader to his own resources to understand this important work. There are countless identical footnotes referring the reader to which part of the Koran the author is quoting when another Christian is killed and sent to hell "an evil place to settle in" (or "a sad place to be"), yet countless more passages with puzzling cultural references are passed over in silence. The index appears to have been compiled by someone with only the vaguest familiarity with the text, and omits several important persons and places. This is even more disappointing because one of the editors involved, Richard Pankhurst, is widely considered the foremost expert on the history and culture of Ethiopia.
I really wanted to enjoy this book and to praise it here, but both the text and the editorial apparatus failed to meet what I looked for: a glimpse inside the world of Ahmad Gragn, and perhaps his Christian opponents. This is clearly a book for the expert in Ethiopian history or Muslim culture, for whom having a complete translation of this work, no matter what the defects are, is critical. If you lack a solid grounding in either topic, there are many other books you'd enjoy reading more than this one.

Book Description
The philosophies of French thinkers Derrida, Lyotard, and Foucault form the basis for postmodern thought and are seemingly at odds with the Christian faith. However, James K. A. Smith claims that their ideas have been misinterpreted and actually have a deep affinity with central Christian claims. Each chapter opens with an illustration from a recent movie and concludes with a case study considering recent developments in the church that have attempted to respond to the postmodern condition, such as the ''emerging church'' movement. These case studies provide a concrete picture of how postmodern ideas can influence the way Christians think and worship. This significant book avoids philosophical jargon and offers fuller explanation where needed. It is the first book in the Church and Postmodern Culture series, which provides practical applications for Christians engaged in ministry in a postmodern world.

This is absolutely ridiculous.

The Essence of Christianity (Great Books in Philosophy)
Helpful but Controversial.......2007-02-18
"There is nothing outside the text."
Derrida the prophet whose view of language and meaning as an endless vortex of interpretation brings hope that the Church can challenge existing interpretations which pretend to be absolutes. I confess some surprise that Derrida's thoughts here could be encapsulated in, "There is no meaning outside context" and whilst I think James KA Smith's chapter is still a must-read for Christians who think Derrida is the Devil Incarnate, I'm somewhat wary about whether Smith has done justice to Derrida's thoughts. If indeed "everything is just interpretation" is the key that unlocks Derrida then how come it wasn't used by writers like Thiselton, Grenz, Veith Jr., Megill, etc.
"Postmodernism is incredulity towards metanarratives."
Lyotard's grenade thrown into the heart of autonomous universal reason as some God's-Eye view, counsels us to spend less time seeking to produce apologetical evidence and maybe devote more time to simply sharing the story of Christ and showing how this story trumps the Enlightenment one (or any other). Once again, I was surprised at Smith's contention that Christianity is not a metanarrative - I always thought it was, but given its nature of suffering and self-giving (as per the replication of Calvary I believe Jesus demands of us all), I always felt that this sets the faith apart from other metanarratives.
But I calmed down after reading his/Lyotard's definition of metanarrative as any grand story that legitimizes itself by an appeal to universal reason i.e. a worldview beyond a community, beyond an internal narrative. This made me reflect on the many instances where I and others have justified/explained the faith by exploiting reason, 'natural law', always seeking the base arguments which my challengers or listeners cannot deny. I think about the numerous times I tried to legitimate the Person and work of Christ without acknowledging the community He came to create. Maybe I should be careful about bringing people into a historical community as opposed to converting a person to some abstract disembodied idea.
This doesn't, however, mean that I'm all the way with Smith in his call for a presuppositionalist-ish kind of apologetic which virtually eschews all 'common ground' between believer and non-believer, and seemingly devaluing external evidences for the faith. And whilst Smith's rejection of anything resembling a correlationalist model (whereby theology leans on a secular discipline of intellectual support, so to speak) is worth pondering over, one can't help but wonder if Smith has sufficiently deconstructed the distinction between sacred and secular, between theology and everything else.
"Power is knowledge."
Foucault's insight that society cannot run away from power and domination spurs the Christian to ask the nature of power he/she chooses to submit to. This trains fresh light on spiritual disciplines and the church's institutional power as a means of conformity to Christ, not at all a bad thing.
Foucault/Smith reminds us of the character-forming elements inherent in our media-soaked culture, the goals of the social disciplinary process and extols the recovery of spiritual disciplines and counter-formational action as a revival of serious discipleship. That Foucault - a sexually promiscuous gay atheist - can be used as a reminder that discipleship is about 'living in a certain way' and not just 'thinking a certain way' strikes me as absolutely wicked. The fact that Smith foot-noted Richard Foster's Celebration of Discipline augments the value of the book, IMO (smile).
The analysis of the postmodern Unholy Trinity above is followed by a brief introduction and application of Radical Orthodoxy which I read to be more or less a (re)emphasis and (re)turn to:
- presuppositionalist apologetics and reviving theology as a metadiscourse independent of non-theological language games
- remembering and living a "healthy catholicity", reclaiming a catholic faith, understood as the Christian community affirmatively (and peculiarly) "standing out" over against secular ones
- liturgical, sacramental and aesthetically oriented worship, as an incarnational response/approach towards sanctifying time and space and body (there's a wonderful sampling of how radically orthodox worship would look like in the final three pages of the book; I think the idea of having shifting glass-digital images as a physical backdrop to worship is far-out awesome)
So Who's Afraid of PostModernism? Nobody who's read his pomo writers in-depth with a charitable and creative heart, seeking to go beyond the "bumper-sticker" view of thinkers like Derrida et al, offering options for the helpful and edifying use of pomo in church, theology and personal spirituality. Smith's book embodies this approach/attitude and even though Radical Orthodoxy raises questions (I know I have a few), I'm grateful for his work and certainly look forward to reading more.
Excellent Observations at a Perilous Cost.......2006-11-28
In the newest edition to the philosophical conversation pertaining to the emergent church, James Smith tackles the issue from a different perspective than other emergent leaders. He claims postmodernism has been fundamentally misunderstood and misapplied to the church. Smith honestly explores the postmodern philosophical mindset and determines that only through a truthful lens of where we are all of modernism must be jettisoned to allow the church to properly function as a countercultural witness. The interaction with postmodern philosophy is by far the most beneficial aspect of Smith's work; yet, his conclusions leave far too many unanswered concerns. As with other emergent leaders, Smith focuses on reacquiring authentic Christian tradition while overlapping it with a new direction of thought. As beneficial as this entry is, a fundamental fault lies at the center of his thinking; Smith has embraced the philosophical postmodern world view and blatantly overlays it upon the Church as the only direction available to true unity. In a manner of speaking he is correct; however, a unified church catholic can only be created at the expense of the doctrine of separation. I strongly suggest only discerning biblical scholars read Smith's book. The direction he calls for will only result in creating a false screen catering to disillusioned hearts; traditionalism is not what the church needs--heart directed teaching is. God's holiness demands as much.
Incredible!.......2006-11-10
I am yet to find a scholar who understands the integration of Philosophy and Theology as well as James Smith (please respond if you know of anyone else). This book is well written, well thought out, for anyone in ministry in a postmodern context this book is a must.
Balanced, informed, and well-written.......2006-11-04
Smith's treatment of Post-Modernism is the best I've seen in the popular Christian press. He makes his case clearly and finds the value in post-modern analysis without succumbing to watered-down theology. I heartedly recommend this book.
