No color in a painting book?.......2007-09-23
It is a good book from an excellent artist. The book would have been more useful if it had colored pictures and lessons in color mixture and schemes.
Text good but all in black and white - no color!.......2007-07-23
the text is good, but it's hard to visualize a painting when it's all in dark and lite tones. Would not recommend this book even tho an artist recommened it to us.I suppose it's good for composition of your painting!
Fantastic review for any artist.......2007-06-29
This is one of my favorite books. In one of our moves - I lost it! How delighted I was to find it on Amazon. Thank you.
great information.......2007-04-05
I got this book from the library first to make sure it was helpful and now I understand why it is reccomended by every art teacher. It was dense with information and if the pictures were in color it would have gotten 5 stars.
Very Informative book on landscape.......2007-01-25
I really liked the information presented in this book. I finally found some of his color examples online. A good reference to have in your library.

Erm?.......1998-09-08
After the first three books which consisted of pure sublime Gregory in a cell with an imaginary rat, Gregory is moved out to live with a family. This is my favourite of the Gregory books as he takes back stage to the family around him. It has towards the end one of the most touching moments I have ever read. Well worth a read, but get at least one of the earlier Gregory books first to understand quite how not on this planet Gregory is.

He who laughs last has read this book.......2000-10-09
For anyone that has ever been to Jamaica, lived there or wants to go this book is a must read. It captures the essence of the Jamaican mentality, way of life and humor as no other book has done. Although written in 1987 it is no less apt today than it was then proving that change in Jamaica moves not at just a back pace but an almost comatose one.
The authors illustrate that one of the most endearing features of the Jamaican psyche is the inate ability of virtually every Jamaican to be able to poke fun at themselves and their country and get away with it.
Book Description
Finding a lack of research-aid materials as she conducted her own Jamaican family research, Ms. Mitchell took it upon herself to put together this handy guide, intended for researchers in the U.S., Canada, the U.K. and Jamaica.
If you think there's not much you can do without traveling to Jamaica, you're wrong! There are many records that are available if you know how to access the various sources through libraries and other repositories. Here you'll find hints and details on what's available and where, covering vital and church records, land patents and deeds, censuses, immigration and emigration, military records, handbooks and directories, court records, newspapers, occupations and more. The last few chapters provide a bibliography of additional references and genealogies, and a listing of useful addresses to jump-start your Jamaican research.
This book is not just for Jamaicans, however; Jamaican records may contain reference to your American or European ancestors. Some marriages of men who served in the regiments sent from England to Jamaica are recorded in Jamaica, and first and second born children may be christened in Jamaica. English and American ships' captains, mates and ordinary seamen may be buried in Jamaica, although they truly never lived in the island. American Loyalists who fled to Jamaica after the American Revolution may have filtered back to the United States or joined others in Canada. Germans who first immigrated to Jamaica later settled after the 1850s in the American Midwest. English Quakers who settled in the island in the late 17th century removed to Pennsylvania in the 18th century; American researchers who cannot make the connection between Pennsylvania Quaker families and those in England might consider the possibility that their families made a home in Jamaica before removing to the United States. This book will show you what to look for, and how to make those family connections.
The appendix contains a timeline of important dates in Jamaican history; and the book closes with a subject index to make finding information easy. The author is a family historian who has been working on her Jamaican ancestry for 14 years.

ASIN: 0821340875 |
Book Description
Psychotherapist, mother, and author Christine Conners never doubts that the decision of a professional woman to stay home with her young children is the right one. In From High Heels to Bunny Slippers, she supports their decision to personally care for their children with compelling new research on childcare and its potential negative effects on young children, as well as her own firsthand experience as a co-founder of the NASA child development centers. Unlike previous books aimed at this growing readership, Conners recognizes and addresses mothersâ adjustment problems that, like any major life event, arise from the decision to quit your job and stay home. She offers tools and strategies that gently lead the professional woman from the challenge of her work world into the new challenges of parenting full-time. She sympathizes, as a stay-at-home mother herself, with the immediate frustrations of loss of personal identity, financial difficulties, depression, and marital discord. As a mental health professional, she offers her proven techniques for forming a strong new identity as a parent when you leave your career, for addressing financial woes through part-time work and money-saving strategies, for overcoming social isolation, depression, anger, and stress, and for finding personal fulfillment during this special time with your young children.

A Solid Argument for Staying at Home - even Part Time.......2007-07-04
I bought this book when I was agonizing about going back to work after the birth of my first child. I was hoping to find some sage advice about whether it was a good idea or not, what my options really were AND in a format that I could read on the very little sleep I have been getting. This was the book! I don't agree with everything that Connors writes - particularly her poorly argued section about why/how grandparents suffer by caring for grandchildren - but I did find that she had fully thought out the options surrounding being a full time mom and even scaling back work to part-time status in order to take a much more active role in caring for one's children. As a result of her book I have decided to return to my career as an attorney part time and found her book particularly helpful in helping me get over the raised eyebrows I get from friends, co-workers and family for having decided to stay home longer. I recommend this book highly to new moms looking for advice on the important decision of staying at home with children vs. going back into the workplace.
Broken in Slippers.......2006-12-22
I had the rare opportunity to meet this author, and I had been delighted to read her book, but Christine Conners is so down to earth you can't help but feel you know her as you read this book. Like so many of my stay at home mother friends, we get a lot of slack by society about our choices to raise our childern ourselves. Christine covers all the stress factors involved in the most importnat job a woman can ever have. I have survived many " Picasso Parenting" moments and felt alone and trapped at times myself, this book really helped me adapt to my new career choice and feel more comfident at a mother. It is a must read for any woman who is even thinking about being a stay at home mom or even a mom who works part time. It is a book I often revisit when I need a mommy pick me up.
Hillarious insight to being a full time mother.......2006-11-18
Most of my reading time was spent like a cheerleader..."You go girl", "That's right sister", "Now you've hit the nail on the head". I really appreciated the fact that the author is in the trenches now after a professional career. This gave her validation to her suggestions ranging on grocery shopping with kids in tow to finances on one income. All the stories gave me the understanding that I am not alone in this "job". Thanks for bringing some humor to my daily life that not many people seem to understand!
Difficult Transition.......2006-11-09
A great resource for stay at home mothers who are struggling with losing their identity. I stayed home for 12 years and can relate to every issue Christine addresses. I encourage mothers who are home with their children and those who are considering staying home to read this book.
Happy in my bunny slippers.......2006-10-09
There are so many factors involved in being a mom and staying at home. Where do we turn for advice? I sure need it? Wow and here is this great book, From High Heels to Bunny Slippers. Where have you been? I'm over here hidden behind the steering wheel and overflowing grocery bags being an at-home mom, air traffic controller and part-time female goddess deluxe. Lucky for me there is a great book I have been reading that helps me deal with my stay-at-home momhood; From High Heels to Bunny Slippers, by Christine Conners, MA, Therapist and Counselor, ISBN: 1-933102-14-4.
And what is it like being home alone? There are the issues of scheduling, the kids, the pets, the animals, the house and all the social issues, and these are just the home issues, no longer the paid for job issues. I get overwhelmed by the daily minutiae that "must" be taken care of just to keep the ship steering clear in the channel every day.
This book is written in a fresh and vibrant voice. Mrs. Conners is in the trenches with us as we plough away each day. This book has helped me cope with some of the loneliness and repetition that rarely occurred when I used to work in an office, but now work alone in a home with kids as clients.
I wear my bunny slippers proudly. Granted they are stained with last nights dinner and the left one got left outside in the rain, but the conversations, advice and thoughtful tone of this book have helped me in so many ways.
This is a must buy and must read for anyone considering the joys and dramas of being a center stage at home parent. Thank you Mrs. Conner for your frank view into my world and for giving me a voice in the otherwise overwhelming din of my lovely, busy, noisy life.
Book Description
Army gadfly Donald Vandergriff argues that what is needed is a true revolution in military affairs. In this book, Vandergriff warms to the task as he takes on the army's personnel system with a clarion call for a revolution in human affairs.
Customer Reviews:
About Long-Overdue Change.......2006-03-20
In his new book - THE PATH TO VICTORY - MAJ Don Vandergriff, Georgetown University ROTC instructor, offers solutions to problems so ingrained as to masquerade as tradition. In a no-holds-barred assessment of the U.S. Army's personnel management system, he provides a blue print for fewer casualties in the next war. Those who might see his diligent research as disruptive could usefully reassess their own priorities. America is at war. One cannot adequately support the fighters without fulfilling what they perceive to be needs.
To value each life is also to acknowledge the importance of each assignment. MAJ Vandergriff reiterates what U.S. veterans have been saying for years. Too rapidly rotating the key personnel in a unit will destroy its proficiency and cohesion. He says that entire 2,500-soldier brigades must be allowed to remain together for as long as three years. He points out that the Army's "up-or-out" policy unwisely weeds out those who might achieve an exceptional level of proficiency at a lower echelon. He claims "up or out" is a manifestation of a plan by Gen. George C. Marshall after WWII to ensure the constant infusion of youth and rapid mobilization for the next world war. A large officer corps could lead such a mobilization, and rapid job rotation could ensure that those officers had the necessary skills. But the world has changed since 1946. MAJ Vandergriff claims that what may have been a realistic plan at its inception has now produced a top-heavy Army with 50 percent more generals than necessary and officers obsessed with promotions. He goes on to say that those promotions are based more on pristine personnel files, than character, leadership, and war-fighting capabilities. No longer productive would be a fitness report system favoring those easiest to lead over those good at their job. MAJ Vandergriff says that Army officers live with "promotion anxiety" and the "need to constantly please their bosses." He points out the potential dichotomy between always pleasing one's boss and still doing the right thing. While he agrees to the importance of "team spirit," he warns that careerism can easily mimic organizational loyalty. In a 4th-generation war against a highly skilled but loosely controlled enemy, he says that the revolution in human affairs must take precedence over that of technology. He suggests that its suppression could spell ultimate defeat on the battlefield.
The military is a profession of honor. Any who would put their own welfare above those they are sworn to support should look for other employment. The service does not promise promotion or retirement, only the chance to serve America by doing the right thing. Personnel management heads should more closely study the legal ramifications of indiscriminately lowering end strength to save money. For example, by legal precedent, forcing an enlisted member (or mustang) out after 15 years violates the organization's inherent obligation to him (or her). Similarly, not promoting someone willing to risk his career for the welfare of the lower ranks is tantamount to dooming those lower ranks to unacceptable risk in the next war.
Personnel problems tend to lack the appeal of more "warlike" topics. But, MAJ Vandergriff - a tanker by trade - succeeds in making their solutions highly readable. The much smaller Marine Corps suffers - possibly to a lesser degree - from the same syndrome as the Army. For those charged with lowering the Marine Corps' casualty rate in the next war, the reading of THE PATH TO VICTORY should been viewed as a professional obligation.
I wish Brian Vile .......2005-07-02
While fortunately, I have had few, if any attacks on my work, just "tweaks," but nothing like by Brian Vile "Brian." What bothers me about his review, if you can call it that, is that he attacks my character, and not my ideas or research (book won an academic history award in 2002 for its research). I have been and remain very open to anyone who will approach or contact me to talk about my ideas, in both the books as well as number of studies posted on www.d-n-i.net. It is apparent that when someone attacks the author's character, that they do not have the knowledge to attack his ideas. Also, Brian Vile does not know why I HAD to remain at Georgetown so long, so another error, assuming that I remained in order to avoid troop serving assignments. This is always been a flaw in the culture of the Army created by up or out, if one does not get promoted or selected, they must have done something wrong?
[...]
Not sure what the hype is about..........2005-06-12
This book is great if you're an insomniac or a malcontent. It took me several attempts to get through, and while I'm no genius, I've tackled far weightier works with no problem. The author's complaint appears to be that he never got over a bad report card from a commander who may or may not have been bad, but who certainly didn't suffer self-righteous megalomaniacs. Based on this early experience, the author has set out to reorganize the entire U.S. Army to prevent such crimes in the future, cherry-picking questionable historical vignettes and concepts. In typical pundit fashion, he rubs some sentences together and, upon seeing a few sparks, announces that he has discovered cold fusion. What he has in fact proposed (and unfortunately convinced many senior leaders of) is a plan for disaster that will guarantee stagnation in the officer corps and a manning system that ensures that 25% of the Army's brigades are broken at any one time. The author doesn't sweat the details, however, preferring to pontificate from a professor's chair instead of accepting assignments that would force him to actually implement his recommendations. Far easier to either take credit after the late-night work of hundreds of unnamed staff officers turn these tortured proposals into reality, or to find fault from above when the programs come crashing to the ground.
Well worth the read.......2005-01-10
While I have a great many disagreements with the author over the specifics of how the personnel management system of the army should be rebuilt, I still recommend this book highly. I have been greatly concerned with the lack of professional developement and professionalism in the US army officer corps ever since I joined the Army in early 1997. This book goes far inexpleining th situation, and then proposes some radical solutions.
The first part of the book, detailing how the army developed its current unprofessional officer corps is insightful and useful, if a tad repetitive. Anyone who wants to understand how the current system developed needs look no further.
Vandergriff's subsequent arguments about fixing it are where I disagree. They are based around building a far more effective "heavy" army designed to defeat other armies in high intensity conflict. For the most part he does an excellent job of this, but he falls into the normal Army trap of assuming that the high-intensity portion of war needs to be the primary focus of the Active Componant (AC), and that the Guard (NG) and Reserve (AR) can carry the burden of the "constabulatory" and peacekeeping missions. Unfortunately, the modern threat environment is composed of mostly low-intensity and transitional intensity conflict potential (a major land war against China is unlikely, and all the other scenarios seem even less plausable).
Additionally, Vandergriff makes the normal Armor officer mistake of trying to keep the heavy forces in the AC and making the NG and AR "light". This has three flaws:
1) it results in the AR and NG bearing the brunt of deployments, since most call for light or medium (at most) forces.
2) More importantly, it fails to take into account the fact that light forces are almost impossible to maintain at high levels of readiness in the NG and AR. The type of continual day-in and day-out training that only the AC can carry out is precisely what makes light forces viable. Tankers and Mech on the other hand can maintain their skills better in an AC and NG environment than lighter forces.
3) It fails to take into account that any future conflict that requires a large amount of heavy forces will have to involve a large buildup period a la Desert Storm. That build-up time can be used to refresh the training of AR and NG units. Deployement s for light and medium forces are far mor likely to be "be there tomorrow" missions, requiring troops that are ready yesterday, not next month.
I still highly recommend this book despite my differences with it. It is refreshing enough to see a US Army officer exmine how the existing officer corps got into its present prediciment, and then propose some radical solutions. It is only through academic debate by military professionals that the problems will be fixed, and this book is a big step in the right direction.
Vandergriff "Iron Major" = Next Emory Upton.......2003-02-01
BG Upton Failed, MAJ Vandergriff will not! Great book!11 The pending war, excepting, for Army to take the lead promote Vandergriff-MacGregor (COL-Braeking The Phalanx-at Ndu in D.C.,) now! With their views the army can take over as the premeir fighting force in 21st century-with decisive victories.

Book Description
The collision of supernova debris with the ambient interstellar medium is a rich field of research. Experts in this area met in June 1987 at Penticton and reviewed subjects including the interstellar medium, evolution of supernova remnants, observations of supernova remanants, shocks and emission processes, and collective effects in galaxies. This official proceedings volume is a must for libraries that maintain complete collections of International Astronomical Union publications, and is a valuable source book for professionals working on supernova remnants.
