Great broad overview for new collectors...........2007-05-27

I intended audience for this book is people getting into the hobby of coin collecting. As such, it covers a lot of ground in about 400 pages. It is written to be interesting, engaging, fun and informative. It accomplishes these tasks and gives anyone a good grounding in coin collecting. While there are other books I would get a along with this one, this is a wonderful place to start for people of all ages.

Typical Dummies book-For Newbies only.......2006-11-10

Yeah, its a Dummies book, but if you could only see how many of these books I own! This is good for beginners. I needed it to learn the basic terminology of my new hobby. It worked for me, but even a newbie quickly gets beyond the Dummies stage and wants more.

An Introductory Book From One of the Numismatic Greats.......2006-07-10

If you've ever considered coin collecting, or you've already gotten started and want to learn more, this is the single most important and easy-to-understand primer on numismatics. You'll find yourself referring back to this book again and again as your knowledge grows. If coin collecting becomes a passion for you, then consider the more in-depth texts by Guth.

This is a good book for young or beginning coin collectors. It is also a great tool for any coin collector to refer from time to time. The description of the book is accurate. Everybody has to start somewhere in their hobby of choice, and this is a great way to learn more about many different aspects of numismatics.

Well needed biography.......2005-01-22

Robert Richardson's biography on Dominique Jean Larrey, one of the foremost pioneers in combat surgery who help paved the way for more effective way of treating wounded soldiers. Larrey created the flying ambulance system that allowed the French army to get their wounded quicker to the field hospitals, thus saving many lives. In other word, Larrey help invent the concept of "medivac" long before the helicopters was invented. Larrey also proves to be one of those rare humanitarians as he cares for the enemies of France equally as he care his own countrymen. Thus, he soon gained esteemable reputation among his nation's enemies as well as among his friends.

The book proves to be well written and quite readable. It should be noted that this is a professional biography of Larrey, mostly concerning his professional life. The author stressed heavily on his relationship with Napoleon, the administrative red tapes and his close relationship with his patients. There are very little of his personal life written here. His wife get mentioned few times and he was a tyrant to his kids but outside of few things, we never get to know Larrey if he wasn't on the campaign trail.

But this is a well needed biography about one of the more important but lesser known individuals of the Napoleonic France. I mean, if you mentioned "Dr. Larrey of Grande Armee" to most Americans, you might get lucky just to get a blank stare!

Interesting Story of an Amazing Man.......2002-12-04

Robert Richardson's book, `Larrey' tells the story of Dominique Jean Larrey, Surgeon-in-Chief to Napoleon's Imperial Guard. The book was first published in 1974 and the current edition was released in 2000. It could not be considered an in-depth or detail biography but in 240 pages the author manages to captivate the reader with amazing accounts of this most interesting man, from Napoleon's campaigns in Egypt to Waterloo.

Larrey was credited with designing a `flying' ambulance which allowed the French Army to recover its wounded on the field and to administer first aid at the front if required. He also devised a practical and life saving system to evacuate casualties from the field of battle to a base hospital. Larrey himself conducted many amputations and other medical procedures whilst under fire.

"Who is that bold fellow?" asked the Duke of Wellington.
"It's Larrey", someone answered.
"Tell them not to fire in that direction; at least let us give the brave man time to gather up the wounded." And so saying he doffed his hat.
"Who are you saluting?" enquired the Duke of Cambridge.
"I salute the courage and devotion of an age that is no longer ours", said Wellington, pointing at Larrey with his sword.

Larrey was a man who cared for the sick and wounded soldiers of any nation regardless of rank or position. This at times placed him in conflict with the hierarchy of the French administration. He established new procedures and methods of training which were adopted not only by the French but also by many of the nations the French Army fought against.

The book is well written and the narrative moves seamlessly through military campaigns to home life and back to life with the Guard. The accounts of the military campaigns are well told even if brief, the main focus of the book is of course Dominique Larrey. There are a number of line drawings and illustrations throughout the book as well as a few maps to help orientate the reader.

The author shows Larrey warts and all but you still come away with a firm admiration for the man "whose skilled scalpel served his Emperor better than any sword." I enjoyed this book and it offered something new in the field of Napoleonic studies. I am sure that anyone who enjoys this period of history will be delighted in this book.

Balanced, scholarly, excellent.......2007-05-07

Edwin Meese was head of the editorial board for this guide, which is put out by the Heritage Foundation. That might suggest to some people that there's a conservative slant to the guide, but those people would be wrong. The Heritage Guide was first brought to my attention by a very liberal aquaintance who praised it to the skies, and then by a very conservative colleague who likewise praised it highly. They both had good reasons to praise it.

The Guide takes you through the entire text of the Constitution, line by line, article by article, starting with a three-page discussion of the preamble. It's written by around 100 contributors, all of them well-regarded experts in law and political science. Their discussion of even contentious topics (e.g., Amendment II or privacy rights) is dispassionate and clear, laying out for the reader the history and the case law behind contemporary constitutional issues and avoiding value judgements. The contributors write without legal jargon and with admirable directness, making the Guide accessible (not just accessible, but even enjoyably readable) to anyone with a good highschool education. The sophistication of their discussion, though, makes it suitable also for university students at all levels and for anyone who has any interest at all in the U.S. Constitution. No matter what your position is on presidential war powers or gun control, you come away from this guide with a clear and concise understanding of how the legal debate got where it is now. Each article in the Guide is followed by cross references to other passages in the Constitution, suggestions for further research, and a list of significant cases touching on the particular Article and Section of the Constitution discussed. Thus the Guide isn't just good reading on its own, but an excellent tool and springboard for further research on any constitutional topic.

This book should be required reading for university undergraduates, and for at least those few who will fall under my power next year, it will be. I intend to use this book in my classes on "Law and Literature" and "Law and Economics" as required supplementary reading. It will help clarify class discussions that revolve around constitutional issues, improve student papers, and make my students better informed citizens of the United States. That last one is the real payoff for everyone. I recommend this book far beyond the mere number of stars by which Amazon allows me to rate it.

I am still on Article I, but already recognize this as a 5 star item, just based on its treatment of the Preamble and the Constitutional Convention. The passage of an oral exam on this book should be a mandatory requirement to graduation from law school, as well as a prerequisite to any degree, particularly any advanced degree, in the fields of History and Political Science.

Review of Heritage Guide to Constitution.......2007-01-05

I am not completely done going through this book but it reveals the history behind the thoughts that went into writing the constitution. It is fairly interesting and not difficult to follow. Good if you want some background into the laws of our land.

Invaluable to anyone with an interest in the meaning of the Constitution........2006-10-06

This is a remarkable work with contributions from more than a hundred legal scholars. The intent is to "present the Founder's understanding of the Constitution and its various provisions" along with the judicial interpretations and political circumstances that make up the historical development of constitutional law. Intended for an audience of lawmakers, judges and lawyers, the Heritage Guide is also a valuable addition to the library of any person with an abiding interest in one of the most - if not the most - remarkable documents created by the hand of man.

Every line of the Constitution is scrutinized, interpreted and discussed. Significant cases are cited and references for further research are provided.

This is definitely not light reading, but it is certainly informative and enlightening reading.

nuts about nuthatches.......2004-05-08

One of the pleasant mysteries that must be solved upon moving to a new geographical area is the identities of the local and migrant birds. Some like bald eagles and cardinals are a no-brainer. But what about all of those indeterminate grayish-brownish-whitish birds that may only be identifiable by their habits? This is where a book like "Life Histories of North American Nuthatches, Wrens, Thrashers, and Their Allies" proves to be useful. It contains 142 black-and-white photographs of birds performing activities such as feeding and incubating, and in the case of the white-breasted nuthatch, creeping head-first down a tree-trunk---not just sitting on a branch and looking mysterious.

By no means are the photographs the highlight of this volume. Arthur Cleveland Bent was one of America's foremost ornithologists, and his twenty-volume series on North American birds was originally published under the sponsorship of the Smithsonian Institution. In this particular volume he and his correspondents have compiled specific observations on about 104 different birds, including various nuthatches, creepers, wren-tits, dippers, wrens, mockingbirds and thrashers. Bent also utilizes the writings of America's great naturalists of the past, including Audubon, Burroughs, and Brewster.

This Dover edition is an unabridged, unaltered republication of the original 1948 edition. Its anecdotal style is very readable, even charming. The copious details of avian nesting habits, courtship patterns, plumage and field markings, food, songs, and flight habits are made interesting by the dedication and enthusiasm of the hundreds of observers who contributed to this book.

In it, I finally learned why one of my favorite birds, the white-breasted nuthatch moves head-first down tree trunks. Francis H. Allen (1912) points out an advantage in this procedure, saying: "I suspect that by approaching his prey from above he detects insects...which would be hidden from another point of view." The woodpeckers and the creepers can take care of the rest by moving up the trunk.

By all means, begin your bird-watching career with some of the good field guides such as "Eastern Birds" by Roger Tory Peterson. When you are ready to delve more deeply into the natural history of your local birds, I strongly recommend these volumes by Arthur Cleveland Bent.
