Book Description
When Danny Gregory's life was turned upside down by tragedy, he learned to cope by teaching himself to draw. The result was a complete transformation of his life, his priorities, his career, and the way he saw the world. In handwritten chapters full of his lush watercolor illustrations, Danny now offers readers a program for reconnecting to their own creative energies, using drawing as an example. He gently instructs us in the art of allowing ourselves to fail, giving up the expectation of perfection and opening our eyes to the beauty around us. The result is the permission to express ourselves fully and take part in the creative process without fear. Artist or not, readers of all stripes will find inspiration in this unique and beautiful book.
Customer Reviews:
Great book for Drawing Inspiration.......2007-08-20
This was a good, inspiring book about drawing and the power it can have in your life. Mr. Gregory worked in advertising for many years and finally gave it up to become an artist, and began keeping sketchbooks as a way to grow. He gives lots and lots of examples and tips on what you can do yourself to enhance your creativity and draw more. His drawings are beautiful and for the most part his prose is very upbeat and made me want to get out there and draw.
I do have one quibble, though, and that's a tiny hint of snobbery in some of his text. For the most part he'll say "do your own thing" or "whatever feels right for you", which I think is the proper way to approach making artwork, but then he'll come out with something like, "only draw in ink" like there's something wrong with pencil. And "you have to go to New York because that's where it's at" which is utter nonsense for many people. This is the kind of thing that makes one think they have to do something a certain way, but to me making art is so personal that I think one should use whatever technique or style they wish.
That being said, I would definitely recommend this book for a good kick in the butt to get out there and get drawing!
Making drawing accessible.......2007-07-07
This is my favorite book as an introduction to illuminated journals. I tried books on "visual" or "creative" journaling, but for me, I just can't connect with abstract blocks of color and shape as symbols of specific insights or emotions. I'm a writer, a words person, but sometimes words just aren't enough for me for capturing a moment. So I looked at other books on illuminated journals, but they're so beautifully rendered by talented and experienced artists that they were too intimidating for me.
Then I found this book. Danny Gregory is a little overlong at the start when he talks about the value of creativity in general. (If you've picked up the book at all, you probably don't need that much persuading.) But once you pick up a pen, he really gets going. He covers the basics of drawing, and I love his analogy linking learning to draw with learning to drive. I also like that he asks you to dare to make mistakes by using a pen instead of a pencil. He doesn't even have you use an actual "journal" at first so you can comfortable with drawing.
I also like that he keeps the book simple throughout. A lot of these types of books have you off to the art supply store with a *list* within the first 2 or 3 chapters. Here, all you'll ever need is a black pen, and maybe some color pens or thicker pens later.
I was surprised to learn that as drawing goes, I'm not all that bad, and I'm certainly good enough for my journals.
A Review from Texas.......2007-06-28
I LOVE this book. I have dabbled at drawing but found it more work than pleasure. When I started reading Creative License I realized that it could be fun and relaxing. "Don't erase your mistakes" was a very liberating statement to me. Now I can't wait to see something that begs me to get my pen and paper out and DRAW!
The Creative License.......2007-06-02
Thoroghly enjoyed it. Will start doing the exercises tomorrow. Simple and effective for the busy schedule.
Encouraging.......2007-04-16
This book will either open your eyes to a new way of thinking about creativity or will serve as a confirmation if you have already headed down the path of self expression. Fun to read and lots of practice ideas included.

Customer Reviews:
Great book. Excellent ideas.......2007-08-06
This is a gem of a book. It has a lot of great ideas on how to build up your company and get things moving. Being a graphic designer by training I know all about branding and creating an image. So that was the one of the first things that I did. But most of the other ideas were new to me and very useful. I have a large room in which my workshop is situated, but I hadn't really considered turning a portion of it into a gallery. But it's a great idea and I am now in the process of doing just that. The advice on getting into boutiques is also very good. I would say this little book is well worth the price and I recommend it highly to any aspiring jeweler. I would also say that the advice is probably good for other crafters and artisans.
Informative.......2007-07-21
This book was incredibly informative! Aside from Viki Laureau's firt-hand experience, the examples of other artists' portfolios, ideas, etc are very helpful. She did a great job of writing this book for the layman who might not have a strong background in business/economics. It's a nice step-by-step guide to get you on you feet.
Really useful.......2007-04-24
This book has heaps of useful information. I found the information very helpful when I was setting up my jewelry site and planning for my marketing strategy. Inspiring and well worth the money.
Fantastic book!.......2007-04-12
Easy read...very inspiring!! I read the book in less than 2 hours and now I feel like I know what I need to do to start selling. Great resources at the end, too!
Marketing and selling your handmade jewelry..........2007-04-12
The book answered all my questions of pricing and how to get started on a small or large scale. Compact, informative, and quick reading.

Jewerly Making for un & Profit.......2007-04-02
Enjoyed this little book. Full of good ideas to get your business up and running. Especially good for the first time business person with no prior experience. Have enjoyed reading it and putting to use their suggestions.
I disagree with the negative review left by Mongopop.......2006-08-31
I have been in the jewelry making business for over 20 years. I teach jewelry making classes on a weekly basis. One of my students brought this book into class and I found it to be very informative.
Okay, so all I can say about Mongopop's review is "DUH". It says the book is for PROFIT...of course the book is going to focus on the business aspect for the majority of the book.
I come across many people that just do not have a creative talent or the ability to grasp concepts. Again...DuH....the book is helping people that probably already have a good base of knowledge about jewelry making. The book includes 8 year old instructions, because most beginnners NO MATTER HOW OLD are at that level. This is a new concept.
Anyway, I just wanted to comment that I was SO disturbed by MONGOPOP's lack of intelligence...I just had to make a comment.
The book is great...Do not let this one review steer you away from a book that will definately help you.
It really scares me that some people will go out of their way to post negative views. I wonder if Mongopop has ever given a positive review. I doubt it.
Don't bother.......2006-03-27
This is not much of either type of book jewelry or doing craft type home biz. The only thing about this books titltes is to sell books to people that don't know much about either of the main items in the title. If you know some about either this tome will not help in any case. You can get the copyright type stuff from the Gov for free, and the legal stuff from your library. Also the laws governing a small biz are so locally written check again with your local library. I do own it and will be trying to off load it.
Lots of Great Info!!.......2005-09-14
Originally borrowed this book at the local library-liked it so well, I purchased it through Amazon-lots of really good information in a friendly easy to read style. I'd recommend it for anyone who is thinking about going into their own jewelry making business.
BirdieBeader.......2005-09-12
"Make Money Doing What You Love"....That is what this book was written for. It was NOT to teach you how to bead. One should already be skilled before attempting to sell their creations or to even think about starting a business. I found it to be informative and helpful, as did the people that I teach. It was easy to understand and well written. I'm pleased to have found this book through Amazon.com. Thank-You. BB

This is the first English-language version of one of the classics of photographic literature, George Rodger's Village of the Nubas, which was originally published in France in 1955. Rodger was a Life magazine photographer during World War II, but in 1945 he reached a breaking point after having witnessed for years the atrocities of that war. He became determined to find a world in which universal values prevailed and the horror of war could never be repeated. With that, arguably naive, intent, he traveled to Africa on a quest for a society untarnished by "civilization." He found the Nubas, a southern Sudanese people living in the region around Kordofan, and developed a series of pictures of and writings about them and their customs. His photographs and writings serve as an intimate and revealing record of the state of Africa just before the "modernizing" changes of the postwar era began. Using a Rolleiflex and a Leica to capture images, and keeping copious diaries, Rodger invented the genre of "package stories," which he sold to magazines like National Geographic. His famous portrait of a dignified Korongo Nuba wrestling champion being carried aloft the shoulders of his defeated foe caught the attention of the German photographer Leni Riefenstahl, who would later document the Nubas herself. This compelling, 120-page, diary-sized hardcover includes Rodger's original text and 38 excellent black-and-white reproductions. --A.C. Smith
Book Description
“Ron Regé is one of a handful of cartoonists in the history of the medium not only to reinvent comics to suit his own idiosyncratic impulses and inspirations as an artist, but also to imbue it with his own peculiar, ever-changing emotional energy. To me, he is unquestionably one of ‘the greats.’” —Chris Ware
Ron Regé, Jr., creates his own visual poetry that sets him apart from other cartoonists as one of the most original artists to enter the medium in the past decade. His storytelling is neither linear nor altogether accessible; however, his recognizable thin line and cute characters draw you into a dreamlike, sensitive fantasy world that, as odd as it seems, is entirely realistic.

gorgeous.......2002-05-03
the book is a gorgeous object. the glue binding is not fun. it's a fascinating book, but i'm sure i don't get all of it. beautiful artwork though. make sure you check out his full-color work in drawn & quarterly 4. it's a beautiful story, but difficult to comprehend even for me, and I'm used to hard comic books. this book has two very impressive quotes on the back from chris ware and daniel clowes, though, and that should motivate anyone to try it. this might be highwater books's best product so far. -yak.
A Million Lines Tell a Story.......2001-01-08
I know that I've seen Ron Rege Jr's images somewhere. But I'm not quite sure where. Probably in my dreams. In 'Skibber Bee-Bye', Rege Jr. creates a world where elephants wear hats, eyeballs grow out of peoples arms, and all the creatures hang out at the 'Lik-Lik Club' where they are entertained by a rock band made up of eyeball-fairy things. Everything is odd and skewed, but strangely familiar. Sure, you've never danced with an elephant, but most likely, you've been cramed into a hot, dark, smoky club and made eye contact with some stranger across the room. This is what makes 'Skibber Bee-Bye' so fascinating, you can relate to the situations, and yet be transported to some other world you've never been to before. Rege Jr. accomplishes all this with very little dialogue, and drawings that are simple and direct. 'Skibber Bee-Bye' is one of my favorite graphic novels, it's inventive, original, funny, twisted, and imaginative. Hey... It never hurts to have elephants wearing hats either.

Book Description
In May 1965, the entire 2nd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment--lock, stock, and barrel--embarked for Vietnam.
Captain Alex Lee was there. . . .
Now combat-veteran Marine captain Alex Lee brings to gritty life the full tour of 2/7. From the search-and-destroy missions to the sudden violent ambushes in the hills and valleys west of Qui Nhon, Lee describes how Marines battled monsoons, malaria, and the enemy as they crept through terrain infested with Viet Cong caves and hideouts.
After paving the way in Qui Nhon for the arrival of more American military, 2/7 was assigned to Chu Lai, where the battalion fought its most bitter, deadly battles. With the scalding ring of truth, Lee captures the conditions of the bone-weary 2/7 Marines as they slogged through jungles and spent night after night in dreary, rain-filled foxholes.
Although they faced a life of constant danger and occasional mindless confusion, in their seemingly endless marathon of effort, agony, and sacrifice, the Marines of 2/7 never faltered, never stopped giving their best.
Customer Reviews:
My father's history.......2007-05-06
All of my life I have wondered what my father's Marine Corps and Viet Nam experience was like. He served Echo company, 3rd Platoon under Cpt. FL Tolleson. Lee unloads, unfairly, on Tolleson in the book and takes certain liberties with after action reports, but my father said he was right on in the day to day descriptions. He remembered every single action described between July and Nov. 1965.
7th Marines were the last to go war on troop transports as a complete unit and make a beach head landing. Lee describes the journey to war perfectly. My father kept commenting on how accurate much of the book was.
Thanks to Lt. Col. Lee for filling in the gaps.
A hero's story.......2004-02-05
Lt Col Lee, a captain at the time, describes in detail the problems of being one of the first units in combat in Vietnam.
he critizes the unnamed superiors for many of the problems involved in his units actions.
First, was the inexcusable requirement to unload the ships they were on carrying them from the U.S. at Okinawa, and to reload on other ships to go to Vietnam. With all their combat equipment, this took many days of backbreaking work.
Once in Vietnam, they had to contend with unifroms that disintegrated in the climate, radios, vehicles that did not work, and an enemy that no one had trained them to fight.
His is a story of very brave men under fire, dying, getting wounded, as well as rear area officers giving them fits with stupid orders.
I recommend this to anyone who wants a feel of how it was to experience a monsoon season. he describes this in great detail, bringing back some memories of my own.
His commanding officer, Col Utter was a very brave officer, and excellent commander of men. Then Cpt Lee, was a person that also fitted this description.
For career military officers only........2002-01-02
There was too much about logistics and not enough about combat.
Yup, that's the way it was........2001-11-01
Col.Alex Lee nailed it.
Thats the way is was. Thats the way we were and thats how we all felt about Leon Utter. I spent most of my time as the radio half of a two man FO team for 81 motors. Worked with Capt Lee many times. E company and later F company riflemen and I all thought just a highly of Alex Lee as we did Col Utter. With few exeptions all the officers of 2/7 were just superlative. I made every operation covered in the book and to borrow a quote, I was no hero but I sure served in a battalion of heros.
Super job getting our story out.
Thanks Alex !
Dan Anderson. 2/7 H&S Co. comm plt. 64-66
rayjoy@ipa.net.......2000-08-18
Another outstanding book about the Marines in Nam. Ltc.Utter is the type of man that an individual would follow into hell if ask to do so. The Army had very few of these type commanders at Battalion level. We had some very outstanding officers at platoon , and company level though.

Book Description
The study of pulsating variable stars has undergone dramatic changes in the past decade. The use of Cepheids and RR Lyrae stars as distance indicators has been extended by the increased sensitivity afforded by CCD detectors and by infrared observations. Meanwhile, other classes of pulsators, such as Mira and SX Phe variables are providing independent checks of the distance scale. Long-standing discrepancies between "pulsational" and "evolutionary" masses are finally being resolved by the new OP and OPAL opacity calculations, as is the mystery of the $\beta$ Cephei excitation mechanism. Seismology of the oscillations of the Sun, white dwarfs, Ap stars and delta Scuti stars has opened windows on internal stellar structure, while Doppler Imaging reveals an entire range of high-degree pulsations hitherto undetectable by conventional photometry or radial velocity measurements. Observations of Long Period Variables have cast a new light on the implications of mass loss for stellar evolution and the history of the interstellar medium. On other fronts, more rigorous treatments of convection and radiative diffusion are starting to bring theory and observation into closer agreement. This book, the proceedings of the International Astronomical Union's Colloquium 139 held in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada in July 1992, contains over thirty comprehensive reviews as well as summaries of over 100 contributed papers, reflecting the current scope of stellar pulsation research. It is an overview of the most recent developments in the field, and a preview of some of the advances expected in the decade to come.
