5 out of 5 stars A necessary companion to the Literary Masterpiece.......2003-02-23

Dore, known perhaps best for his woodcuts of Dante's "Divine Comedy", was not only a fantastic illustrator, but a prolific one as well, producing scores of woodcuts for great literature, including "The Holy Bible" and "Orlando Furioso". Before there were movies, a person could look at these pictures for motion, excitement, and dramatic storytelling.
This is a necessary companion to "Paradise Lost", a great work in its own right. Dore's illustrations clarifies, vivifies, and expands on the reading experience. The pictures are brilliantly reproduced here at a small cost to the consumer. The book stands alone for great artwork and is worth the minimal price.

5 out of 5 stars Stunning Display of Woodcut Artistry.......2001-12-30

It is amazing how such complex woodcuts could be done! Some of these are used in books. An example is the book cover illustration of the book "Raising Hell: A Concise History of the Black Arts and Those Who Dared Practice Them" (ISBN: 0399522387).

If you like to see high standard of woodcuts, get this book.

5 out of 5 stars An exceptional gathering of his finest work!.......1999-02-27

This is with out a doubt the best of Gustave's biblically inspired works. His mastery is proven by creating a visually stunning and poetic world of a time long ago but not forgotten. It's hard to remember what I used to imagine when I thought of the Garden of Eden or the descension of the fallen angels must've been like prior to reading this work.

5 out of 5 stars Intimidated by those fancy little tubes of paint?.......2002-05-05

Frightened by those broad, flat, expanses of white watercolour paper? Watercolour Fast and Loose is for you! This book "sweeps aside the false mystique" of painting with "techniques based on practical common-sense and a bit of home-spun psychology." This how-to, heavily illustrated, book investigates the value of paint, types of paper and even which brushes to use - and presents useful advise with almost unlimited enthusiasm.

As the author, watercolourist Ron Ranson states in the Introduction, his goal is to relate to the reader. Even though you've "waged the psychological struggle" before, only to have lost - by getting materials out and then being afraid to ruin that lovely sheet of white paper - this book will truly get you itching to try Ranson's methods.

Ranson's paintings and techniques in this book emphasise loose, free, impressionistic renderings of landscapes. If you're looking for cloying illustrations of nostalgic subjects and "hearts and flowers," you'll have to look elsewhere. This book is chockfull of advice on representing trees and skies, composing pictures, tonal values and simplifying photos to painting.

You will pick this book up again and again as your own "ouvre" develops, as it's the kind of advice you'd get if you were lucky enough to have a beloved English uncle - that could paint like only Ron Ranson can! For example; "You can't go through life avoiding figures in your landscapes - just because you're afraid of spoiling your pictures. Students often seem to belive that they need training in life drawing before they can portray them with confidence - this simply isn't true." And better yet, the author goes on to show you just exactly how to paint: outlining tools to use, many varying examples, and an absolulely indispensible "do's and don'ts" list that should be mandatory reading for every painter.

Another example in "The Materials" chapter; "This is going to be short chapter because the materials I'm going to show you are few, simple and reasonably cheap to buy." If a statement like that doesn't get you itching to paint, you can always go back to charcoals!

As a Sunday painter, struggling to do away with the inclination to "fiddle" with a painting until it becomes muddy, flat and contrived, I found Mr. Ranson's techniques to offer new hope of fresh, vital, majestic paintings. I recommend this book unreservedly.

                        Book Description

When the peccadilloes of his law-firm partner sink the business, Eddie Amos returns to the Commonwealth Attorney’s office as a prosecutor having as his chief goals the conviction – on the basis of suspected longstanding sexual-abuse of boys – of (1) the administrator of a tax-funded youth organization in the central-Kentucky city of Lexington, and (2) the city’s drug-czar/pimp. At the same time, a young attorney instigates a heretofore-unheard-of wrongful-death lawsuit, generated by a drunk driver, against a distillery, and the two lawyers work together to achieve their goals. An assassination, two murders and a possible suicide impact or result from their efforts.

Characters ranging from the most sublime to the seamiest – an Episcopal priest (Vietnam veteran), drug pushers, dope-heads, prostitutes, embezzlers, rogue cops, troubled teenagers, a greed-driven booze-maker, corporate lawyers, sexual perverts, a hit-man, sex-abuse victims, and a devout and beautiful paralegal – are caught up in the process, during the development of which Amos, the priest, a restaurateur embittered by the drunk-driver-induced death of her husband, a corporate attorney’s wife, the young lawyer and the paralegal progress through spiritual journeys and/or experience the developing of romantic attachments or profound heartbreak, but find some answers to hard questions.

Tom Bodett's name should be Apple Pie. His stories are so heartwarming yet, at the same time, not the least bit cloying. Maybe the only thing better than reading a Tom Bodett story is to sit back and have him read it to us. There isn't a person out there who wouldn't like to hear about the salmon throwing contest or Ed's new age experience. We can all relate to these stories even if they don't (or couldn't) happen to us. I know that I speak for a lot of people when I say I want to live at The End of the Road

This academic study is well researched and was the author's doctoral thesis. Like most doctoral thesis it is dry and does not make for interesting reading. While it was filled with many fascinating facts, I found that the text seemed disorganized. The author filled the pages with historical information which strayed from the topic of devadasis. While I believe the author's intent was to give the reader historical background information, I felt that much of this information would have been better served as part of a different publication. The author lived in India, learned Bharat Natyam dance, and gained first hand knowledge. While this information is conveyed in the author's bio, the text does not reflect it. I wish there was more human interest information for the fascinating topic of devadasis.

                                      Book Description

It takes a fabulous top to top off an outfit perfectly—and these smart and trendy choices are right at the height of fashion. Plus, they’re simple to sew, with each project building on the one before so novices can progressively develop their skills–including seaming, adding darts, setting in sleeves, and inserting a neckline flounce or collar. Newcomers, or those who feel a little rusty, can begin with the mock-wrap blouse or an extremely easy-to-make pullover tank with topstitching. Ponchos remain cool as ever, and the lightweight version here showcases wonderfully interesting fabric. A jacket with contemporary cropped sleeves goes smoothly from a day at work to an evening out.

Do not spend your money on this book....all it does is shows you designs from patterns (that you have to go buy separately) that you make minor adjustments to them by addings trims, etc.. returned it immediately!

This is the same idea as Sew cool, Sew Simple: Stylish Skirts. You have to have the patterns to start with and it gives you ideas for adding to that. I didn't like the book and wouldn't recommend it to friends.

5 out of 5 stars History comes alive!!!.......2006-02-10

Of all the historical books I've ever read, this one above all others made history come alive. I could go into detail about writing styles, sources of information and research but other reviewers have done a great job of that already.

I can only say that this was one of the few book that I've read in my life that I just couldn't put down, could not turn the pages fast enough, and when I was done just sat and reflected for a while. The text flows so freely and the narrative is so fast paced that you should be able to feel the urgency Lee felt as the noose closed around him and his troops.

Hold on to your hat, you're in for a wild ride!

4 out of 5 stars History as Novel in Fascinating Read.......2005-09-11

To Appomattox....by Burke Davis offers a fascinating glimpse of the heartbreaking turmoil and euphoria which captured Confederate and Union participants from the breakthrough at Petersburg to the surrender at Appomattox Court House.

This history is written in the style of a novel relying extensively on diary entries of about twenty or so participants to tell the story of the defeat and collapse of the Army of Northern Virginia. The style of writing reflects Shelby Foote's great literary efforts in his Civil War trilogy much more than the detailed military descriptions found in works by Sears or Trudeau. Although I thought it could have benefited from marrying this deeply anecdotal history more thoroughly with reportage of units and battles (as Foote did masterfully), I highly recommend this work for anyone interested in the final defeat of the forces of Robert E. Lee.

The drama of the close of the Civil War's main theater is well told. Readers are in the trenches with private Rebels and Yankees, as well as riding along with officers as they struggle to control events with limited information in a very fluid environment. Although the author has a slight southern bias (I would say most reflected in his canonization of Lee and in showing Lincoln largely through his humorous stories or jokes), on the whole both sides are well represented and the superb strategic vision and masterfully calm control of Grant is amply demonstrated. It was interesting to note that in the early chapters (each chapter is one of the final nine days of the campaign), the subheading for the Confederates is listed "Confederates" while the Union section is titled "The Enemy." I chalked this up to it being a book written in 1959 by a southerner and it really doesn't cloud what is a fairly even handed look at this fascinating military history.

Using some literary license, mostly to flesh out descriptive scenery around first person accounts, Davis's effort reads like a "page-turner" novel as the ANV is pushed back from its entrenchments around Petersburg and Richmond, through flight and disintegration to its famous end at the McLean House. It does end abruptly and it would have been fascinating to read more of the few days after the surrender when soldiers fraternized and the rebels walked home as American citizens once more. I've often wandered what some of those long and lonely walks back to Texas, Georgia and other points far away from Virginia were like for the southern soldiers. However, the author does an excellent job of giving the human side to the war, particularly in giving the major players a well defined personality. This was a very enjoyable read.

Living near Richmond,I have followed the trail of Lee's retreat in toto twice and in part more than I can count. This book brought every mile to life for me.The ironies and tragedies that dogged every foot just blow me away.So many of the places in the book are still there to be contemplated.Travel the trench lines around Petersburg, visit the crater, start out at Pamplin and follow the sad ,desperate line of soldiers. You can almost feel their shuffling ghosts. At the end, stand in the McLean House and say a prayer for all who lost so much in this tragedy.

                                      5 out of 5 stars Inspirational Story.......2004-11-27

A detailed, factual account of the last days of the Army of Northern Virginia. Virginia historian Greg Eanes said, "The personal stories expertly weaved together by Burke Davis are inspirational and motivated me to continue research and eventually write and have published 'The Black Day of the Army, April 6, 1865: The Battles of Sailor's Creek'. Mr. Davis' work is timeless and is must reading for anyone interested in those final days."

5 out of 5 stars Narrating history in the fluid style of a novel.......2002-05-07

To Appomattox by Civil War expert Burke Davis is an expertly researched, historically grounded, deftly written retelling of the last nine days of the Civil War. Narrating history in the fluid style of a novel, yet as accurate as records and all sources of information can allow, To Appomattox characterizes General Lee, his troops, and a nation weary of war in a vivid, dramatic, engaging, manner. To Appomattox is a welcome and strongly recommended addition to personal, academic, and community library Civil War Studies reference collections.

This collection of essays addresses a difficult question: Are some cultures better than others at creating freedom, prosperity, and justice? Although Culture Matters offers varying responses to this politically incorrect question, its editors, Lawrence E. Harrison and Samuel P. Huntington, as well as the bulk of its contributors, answer in some form of the affirmative. In an introduction, Harrison (author of Underdevelopment Is a State of Mind) writes in the third person of the movement he helps lead: "They are the intellectual heirs of Alexis de Tocqueville, who concluded that what made the American political system work was a culture congenial to democracy; Max Weber, who explained the rise of capitalism as essentially a cultural phenomenon rooted in religion; and Edward Banfield, who illuminated the cultural roots of poverty and authoritarianism in southern Italy, a case with universal applications." (The book, moreover, is dedicated to Banfield, "who has illuminated the path for so many of us.") For readers loath to make value judgments about cultures, Culture Matters may be tough going. But admirers of Trust by Francis Fukuyama, The Wealth and Poverty of Nations by David Landes, and any number of books by Thomas Sowell will find much to admire on these pages. Fukuyama and Landes, in fact, have written chapters--along with Barbara Crossette, Robert Edgerton, Nathan Glazer, Seymour Martin Lipset, Orlando Patterson, Lucian Pye, Jeffrey Sachs, and many others. In an especially compelling essay on Africa's continuing plight, Daniel Etounga-Manguelle asks, "What cultural reorientation is necessary so that in the concert of nations we [Africans] are no longer playing out of tune?"

And this is the point of the book: not to denigrate any particular culture, but to figure out how all people can improve their quality of life. In the words of Harrison, who pens the book's concluding essay, "It offers an important insight into why some countries and ethnic/religious groups have done better than others, not just in economic terms but also with respect to consolidation of democratic institutions and social justice. And those lessons of experience, which are increasingly finding practical application, particularly in Latin America, may help to illuminate the path to progress for that substantial majority of the world's people for whom prosperity, democracy, and social justice have remained out of reach." --John J. Miller

                                                        Book Description

An important look at why some countries and ethnic groups are better off than others, and the role that cultural values play in the shaping of nations' and peoples' political, economic and social performance Prominent scholars and journalists ponder the question of why, at the beginning of the twenty-first century, the world is more divided than ever between the rich and the poor, between those living in freedom and those under oppression.

2 out of 5 stars Worth a read -- find out what academics think!.......2007-09-11

Well, we are very carefully approaching a point of actually *applying objective standards* to how well cultures allow their populations to self-actualize. As we shrink in horror from the idea, let's just have a peek inside this book.

Lawrence Harrison has the requisite progressive pedigree to pull this off.

A few interesting give-and-takes in the book.

A few VERY OBVIOUS cultural issues left out.

The book could have been much, much worse. For the most part, these folks kept their post-modernism under control and wrote in a comprehensible manner.

                                                        Not entertaining, but not horrid.

                                                        5 out of 5 stars Culture Matters.......2007-03-09

This book was well put together. it reflects the work of a number of intellectual authors and gives multiple opinions on this huge subject of culture in politics and world order.

2 out of 5 stars Tedious academic compilation.......2006-08-28

There were a few good nuggets of information in the varied chapters; however, most of the content of this book is hopelessly dry and academic. Seemingly written by professors and wonks for other professors and wonks, I cannot raise the appraisal of Culture Matters above two stars. Yes culture most certainly matters. The value sets of peoples around the world determine if they develop and thrive, or collapse into mediocrity.

5 out of 5 stars it really does matter.......2006-07-04

For those who wonder why some people are doing well and some aren't, this is a good book. Particularly excellent is the section on why Africa is such a mess by Daniel Entounga-Manguelle.

3 out of 5 stars Some very good chapters.......2006-06-19

Richard A. Shweder's "Moral maps, first world conceits, and the new evangelists", Samuel P. Huntington's "Cultures count", and Jeffrey Sachs' "Notes on a new sociology of economic development" are the best chapters to read, stimilating, and full of wits of multiple culturalism. Sachs' chapter points to a direction of the marginal explanation power of institutional analysis (though he might not realize it when he saw the relevance of geography determinism). In any case, you don't want to miss Shweder's chapter.
