Pencil Drawing.......2007-02-17
This book is quite well done.......but really only for the advanced art student.
Nice Book on Realism.......2007-02-06
I found the book useful for improving your penciling techniques. I gave it 4 stars though because the focus seems to be more on technical drawing and less on art. This is the realist mantra which is so popular these days. If realism impresses you, this is your book. For others, it's an instruction manual for penciling, to make your drawings more pretty.
Excellent drawing help.......2007-01-12
I bought this book for my son for Christmas. He loves to draw and does it quite well. He started exploring it immedidately and is presently working on a drawing, a very realistic portrait of Steve Nash, using materials and techniques shown in the book. I am so glad my brother referred this book to us and that I found it on your website. Pleasure doing business with you.
Clear, thorough explanations for amazing techniques.......2007-01-10
When you read this book and see the artist's work, you'll be amazed at what can be done with a few simple tools. The techniques are varied and the results spectacular - this is no beginner's book, to be sure, but even if you pick up just a little of this artist's insights and techniques, you'll see incredible improvements in your work. If you need to learn to sketch, pick up a different book, but if you want to raise your skills to the highest level in pencil/charcoal, this will help immensely.
Wonderful instruction........2007-01-09
This has an excellent drawing/illustration of a sphere and the light and shadows on it. Overall, it's an excellent book that explains the technical aspect of drawing the realistic textures. It tells what hardness/softness of pencils to use, when to use charcoal and when to use graphite and when to layer the two, how to blend and which blending tool to use, using real texture, making indents in the paper, using masking mediums. The first two chapters cover materials and techniques. The last two show how to apply materials and techniques in demonstrations/exercises. The drawings have captions telling what techniques and pencils were used and lines connect the appropriate caption to the appropriate part of the drawing.
Book Description
With step-by-step projects that are designed to help sharpen artists' skills and heighten their confidence, this book demonstrates simple techniques for rendering the textures of everyday objects, such as metal, wood, plastic, hair, fur, feathers, and more. This 64-page book simplifies the process with easy-to-understand instructions and comprehensive illustrations.

Book Description
This title describes in detail the first aircraft -- a series of piston-engined fighters -- produced by the famous Mikoyan Design Bureau during and immediately after World War II. The first of these, the I-200 of 1940, entered limited production the following year as the MiG-1. This aircraft was quickly developed by 1941 into the MiG-3, a high-altitude interceptor. This book discusses these aircrafts' operational history and describes both the standard production type and the various experimental variants including the radial-engined MiG-9, the first aircraft to bear the designation, and the refined I-230 series which never entered production. A separate chapter addresses the I-200 (DIS or MiG-5) long-range heavy escort fighter, the first twin-engined MiG aircraft developed in 1941 to protect heavy bomber formations against German fighters, which did not enter production because no factories were available to build it. Also covered here is the I-220, which in 1944 was the progenitor of the I-220/I-225 series of high-altitude fast interceptors developed to combat German bombers and reconnaissance aircraft overflying Moscow. Apart from developmental problems, these aircraft were prevented from entering production by the changing military situation, which saw the end of the Luftwaffe raids against Moscow. This book also covers the unusual I-250 (N) mixed-power fighter which had a Kholschchevnikov 'pseudo-turbojet' booster in the tail. When engaged, it gave the diminutive fighter a top speed of 513 mph -- impressive in its day. Though only a handful were built, the I-250 was the final step toward the MiG-9 of 1945, the Soviet Union's first true jet fighter.

Book Description
As the process of globalization intensifies and as we become increasingly conscious of the global dimensions of human existence, the case for developing norms that are global in reach and application also becomes stronger. Yet the human race still exhibits a marked diversity of culture, belief and value.
This collection of essays explores the problems involved in combining norms that apply to all humanity with sensitivity to, and respect for, people's cultural differences. Among the many issues that the authors address are the following: can we and should we treat the human race as belonging to a single global community analogous in character to the political communities that we call states?
must the doctrine of human rights ride roughshod over cultural differences or can it accommodate those differences?
does the idea of human rights itself have a genuinely universal status or is it no more than a local prejudice with global pretensions?
and should we treat individuals or groups and communities as the relevant claimants when we devise global norms?

Customer Reviews:
How do they differ?.......2003-08-07
In science, one often strives to conduct experiments where you have 2 sets of similar subjects, and you vary the environments in different ways, to see what transpires. That is the spirit of this fascinating treatise. The authors contrast the experiences of female managers in Britain and Hong Kong. Both groups are well educated (usually with an undergraduate degree at least) and are middle class to upper middle class. Plus, both countries are developed.
They found some striking differences. In Britain, if you are a middle class woman, chances are, so too were your parents. Courtesy in part of the British class structure. But in Hong Kong, due to the rapid postwar industrialisation, there is far less correlation, and a greater belief by the women in meritocratic advancement.
The authors go on to discuss other factors. An interesting sidenote is the availability of servants to the Hong Kong women, due to an endless supply of uneducated labour in Guangdong. This lets women maintain a career path soon after childbirth. A harder option in Britain, despite maternity leave legislation.
All in all, a good comparison of the female struggle for careers and achievements across cultures.

Customer Reviews:
One of my favorites.......2005-11-20
This book is such a comfort. As a child therapist for several years and now a mother of three, I embrace the premise of this book: that bad news and scary information is available everywhere and that our children are profoundly affected by it. That's why is is so refreshing to read Scary News. It is really rare to find an author who writes with such clarity and joy and who offers such easy and practical things to do with children to counteract these forces. For example, I really liked the suggestions on creating comforting and beautiful places in your home with your children. Throughout the book Lorna Knox addresses the spiritual side of children in a joyful and non-denominational way, which adds a depth and wisdom that most parenting books don't come close to. The goal is to prepare children to deal with reality in a mature, joyful and compassionate way. And, without addressing any specific behavior problems, it is clear to me that the suggestions in this book would alleviate many of the behavior problems parents face. I highly recommend it.
Scary News: A Relevant Book.......2005-10-30
Scary News couldn't come at a better time, for parents, grandparents, and children. Many parents and grandparents are sensitive to what can be viewed on TV news. However, how many of us pay attention to what's on the radio or what we're talking about when we're with the kids or they're within earshot. I had never thought about such things until I read Scary News. Also, Lorna gives us positive ideas on what to do when the kids hear about all the world's problems. It's not just a negative book; her ideas are wonderful -- and they work!
A thoughtful, realistic approach to helping our children.......2005-10-28
"Scary News" is a wonderful resource for parents who are interested in helping their children become confident and secure individuals. Exposure to media is inevitable for all children, and this book gives us real-world ideas for helping our children make sense of media, and the role it should play in their lives.
Scary News--A Practical Guide for Parents and Educators.......2005-02-12
As a Child Development Specialist, parents and teachers often ask me how much their children and students should be told about certain tragedies headling the news. It's a complicated question, but Lorna's book is full of fresh, practical ideas to help guide us. During the Tsunami event, a Kindergarten teacher at my school struggled with how much information to discuss with her class of 5-years olds. I gave her my copy of Scary News, and after reading it she declared it to be "wonderful", and asked that our school purchase more copies for our staff and parents. Scary News is a resource book that should be in every parent's library.
A resource for raising children in a modern age.......2005-01-09
Scary News: 12 Ways To Raise Joyful Children When The Headlines Are Full Of Fear by Lorna Ann Knox (a former nurse and health educator, and currently a teacher in Portland, Oregon) is a resource for raising children in a modern age full of terrors. Offering guidelines for teaching children of various ages and stages of development, from early childhood to teens, how to lead balanced lives without being overwhelmed by news of horrible events such as war, natural disasters, terrorist attacks and economic busts. Scary News is not an escapist guide; it stresses the importance of learning information, but balances that with the key of learning to make life choices out of love, not fear. A reassuring and knowledgeable supplement for answering some of the most difficult questions a child can ask.
Book Description
In The Union Cavalry Comes of Age, award-winning cavalry historian Eric J. Wittenberg provides a long-overdue challenge to the persistent myths that have unfairly elevated the reputations of the Confederate cavalryâs âcavaliersâ and sets the record straight regarding the evolution of the Union cavalry corps. He highlights the careers of renowned Federal officers, including George Stoneman, William W. Averell, Alfred Pleasonton, John Buford, and Wesley Merritt, as well as such lesser-known characters as Col. Alfred Duffie, a French expatriate who hid an ugly secret. Wittenberg writes a lively, detailed account of a saber-slashing era in which men fought for duty, honor, and bragging rights. Indeed, a taunting note left behind by Confederate Brig. Gen. Fitzhugh Lee on a raid at Hartwood Church, Virginia, in 1863 sparked Northern retaliation at the Battle of Kellyâs Ford. The Federal cavalry then evolved during the trials of Stonemanâs Raid, with their hard work culminating in the Battle of Brandy Station, where they nearly broke the unsuspecting Confederates in a fourteen-hour maelstrom that is considered the greatest cavalry battle ever fought in North America.
A skillfully woven overview, this unforgettable story also depicts the strategic and administrative tasks that occupied officers and politicians as well as the day-to-day existence of the typical trooper in the field. The Union Cavalry Comes of Age shows that Northern troopers began turning the tide of the war much earlier than is generally acknowledged and became the largest, best-mounted, and best-equipped force of horse soldiers the world had ever seen.

A Few Observations........2007-08-08
This is a well written and exhaustively researched book covering an important period of time for the Union Cavalry.
I have but one minor complaint. I am probably the only person on the planet who would take exception to the phrase; "Keenan`s Charge." My great grandfather, Major, later Colonel and Bvt. Brig. General Pennock Huey, was the officer who, when surprised by Jackson`s troops, gave the order to "Draw sabres and charge", which was repeated by Major Keenan who was killed in the "Charge of the Eighth Pennsylvania Cavalry" at Chancellorsville. Due to the vainglorious imagination and outright lies of Gen. Alfred Pleasonton and his later testimony at hearings on the conduct of the war, Keenan was credited with having been ORDERED to charge Jackson`s troops when, in fact, the entire action was an unfortunate accident from which the only method of extrication was to "charge".
Mr. Wittenberg gets it right in his text but still refers to the incident as "Keenan`s Charge". Fact is, as I was told by my grandfather, HIS father never referred to it as ANYONE`S charge; just the "Charge of the Eighth Pennsylvania Cavalry. The phrase: "Keenan`s Charge", as well as the two execrable songs of the same title, should be consigned to the ash can of history.
J.W.Huey III
Very Well Done!.......2006-07-20
Union Cavalry Comes of Age: Hartwood Church to Brandy Station, 1863 is a detailed examination of the evolution or "coming of age" of the Union cavalry during the American Civil War. Conventional historical wisdom states that the Union cavalry was not an effective force until after the Battle of Gettysburg. Furthermore, the Confederacy has often been portrayed as possessing the "natural" cavalrymen, while the Union supposedly had to turn merchants and mechanics into horsemen. The author, Eric J. Wittenberg, argues that, on the contrary, the Union possessed skilled and knowledgeable cavalrymen from the beginning of the war. The relative ineffectiveness of the Union cavalry in the Eastern Theater during the first two years of the war, he argues, should be attributed to poor organizational decisions by the early commanders of the Army of the Potomac. Wittenberg believes that it was the distribution of the Union cavalry in separate regiments and brigades, rather than the unified structure used by the Army of Northern Virginia, that led to its ineffectiveness.
Wittenberg has established a solid reputation as the author or editor of several other works on the Union cavalry during the Civil War, including most importantly: Protecting the Flanks: The Battles for Brinkerhoff's Ridge and East Cavalry Field, Battle of Gettysburg, July 2-3, 1863 (Ironclad Publishing, 2002) and Gettysburg's Forgotten Cavalry Actions (Thomas Publications, 1998, and winner of the 1998 Bachelder-Coddington Literary Award). Union Cavalry Comes of Age is organized into nine chapters, which offer a chronological history of the Union cavalry from the formation of the Cavalry Corps, Army of the Potomac, in February 1863 to the Battle of Brandy Station in June 1863. Wittenberg also focuses on the careers of several Union prominent cavalry officers, including George Stoneman, William W. Averell, Alfred Pleasonton, John Buford, and Wesley Merritt.
Wittenberg has produced a well-written and researched volume that goes a long way toward dispelling myths regarding the Union cavalry. The volume includes more than 1000 endnotes, a 21-page bibliography, and five appendixes containing the orders of battle for cavalry forces at Fredericksburg, Kelly's Ford, Stoneman's Raid, Alsop's Field, and Brandy Station. I highly recommend this volume to those individuals interested in the Civil War and/or horse cavalry.
Learning to Ride.......2004-08-15
Learning to ride could be the sub title of this book. The Union Cavalry had many handicaps at the start of the American Civil War and that was only one of them. Trapped by official disapproval and high command's indifference the cavalry had real problems. This is the story of the journey from ugly stepchild to equal on the field of battle. At the start of the war, official Union policy refused to raise volunteer cavalry regiments. The existing Regular U.S. Army Cavalry would be able to perform all the duties required and the government had no need to incur the additional expenses. Late to the field, badly trained and saddled with a tactical doctrine that guaranteed failure the cavalry endured and learned. In 1863, the Cavalry fought the Cavaliers of the Army of Northern Virginia to a stand still at Brandy Station. This is the story of the two years of abuse and misused that plagued them. Even more, it is the story of the AOP's Cavalry growing and developing their role in the winning of the war. This is first of a series of excellent book on the Union Cavalry by Eric J. Wittenberg. This book builds a solid foundation that will help the reader understand the real price of victory in 1865.
Outstanding cavalry title by solid writer.......2004-07-18
Is it fun to read about the cavaliers in Gray? Sure. Was the Union cavalry really as inept and pathetic as we have been led to believe? Not a chance, at least according to historian of the blue horse Eric Wittenberg, who sets up and knocks apart just about every falsehood, half-truth and myth that has popped over over the last century and fifty odd years.
Wittenberg explains how the Union arm evolved, and explains the careers of a wide variety of officers, including prominent ppersonalities like Alfred Pleasonton, George Stoneman, John Buford, Wesley Merritt, and William W. Averell, and many lesser known commanders. He also explains how these officers, in camp and in battle, developed the Federal horse arm into a force to be reckoned with--and one that eventually ran circles around the Southern horsemen. One of the high points of the Union cavalry experience was at Brandy Station during the opening phase of the Gettsburg Campaign, and as one might expect, the author expends substantial ink writing about it. Although he does not appear to add anything new here, he does explain it from a different perspective, and that is refreshing. Brandy Station made it clear the blue horse was coming of age, but the author makes a good case it was sooner and stronger than most have heretofore acknowledged.
Wittenberg's writing is solid (not brilliant, but workmanlike and thorough). Based upon a wide variety of firsthand and secondary sources, the book adds something worthwhile to the voluminous literature, which one cannot is hardpressed to say about most of the books published these days. Much of this value is that the author explains why the Union cavalry improved in leadership and ability, and how its role evolved from 1861 to 1863, and then again to the end of the war. Though not a big fan of Brassey line, this title is one of their better releases. Recommended.
Much-needed, very well researched.......2004-01-24
If you are a Cavalry afficianado, or simply want to expand your knowledge of the American Civil War, you must have this book. Equisitely researched and documented, Eric shows his intimate familiarity with the Union cavalry during the war. Many sections of the book fill in gaps previously unaddressed by any other work.
The year 1863 was inarguably the most important watershed era for Union Cavalry, which began to improve to a point at which they began to surpass their Confederate counterparts in leadership, ability, and cohesiveness. The Union horsemen's prowess, beginning in 1863, as a unified fighting arm drastically contrasts with their use as couriers and body guards for the infantry during the first two years of the war. Eric wonderfully explains both how and why the changes began and developed in this work.
This book needs to be consulted along with any other work on Union Cavalry in the Civil War, and deserves a place on the bookshelf of anyone interested in gaining well-rounded knowledge not only of the cavalry, but of both armies' operations in the first half of 1863.
