Book Description

The first collected work of the LA underground art world's favorite wunderkind, Elizabeth McGrath. 112 pages of full-color photos and detail shots reveal the exquisitely complex details of her sweetly twisted creatures, giving a glimpse of what the City of Misfit Toys might have become had it been saved by Satan rather than Santa. Upon first viewing, McGrath's colorful, mummified creatures are gothic oddities, but their undeniable artistry immediately draws one in, revealing their touching curiosities, transforming their grotesqueness into tortured beauty.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiration and Magic.......2007-07-29

This one really knows her own niche, and it is fantastic! I love this book and I'm mesmerized and inspired by the metaphors, and hysterical and haunting irony she poses with her art, photographed beautifully in this book. Everything she does has so many elements to it, you could look at each piece over and over and bring something new to your analysis of it. If you aren't someone who analyzes art, though, it's just as fabulous for the visual effect. This woman merits all the attention she's gotten in Juxtapoz and on the art scene, because she is clearly dedicated, to the core, and her artistic and socially expressive creations are pure gold. I would love to find more artists that measure up to the bar she's set for this kind of work, so I can suck up the inspiration and drown myself in it, until it's coming out my ears. Yes please.

I bought this book for my friend as a birthday gift. And the next day I bought another one for myself cuz the book is really fantastic! I wanna share it with my other friends who like creepy things. The details are so delicate that I could spend hours reading it. Highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars Great book for fans of Liz McGrath.......2007-02-09

This book is really great for the close up photos of Elizabeth's work and gives you background information on her.

5 out of 5 stars creeps glorious creeps.......2006-11-16

This is one of those books that I stumbled upon while store-browsing and passed up, and kicked myself later for not snatching it up immediately. My shelf was lonely until it arrived in the mail. That's how cool this book is.

For the uninitiated this is a collection of photographs of mutated animal/insect sculptures and dioramas, little creatures dressed up like sailors and prostitutes, stuff of that ilk (they have a very Grand Guignol feel). They're crafted beautifully and, true to the book's title, creepily, but adorably so. Fans of the Nightmare Before Christmas characters and asthetic will probably love this stuff.

McGrath's work is downright amazing, I just wish this book were a little thicker.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Imagination.......2006-11-04

A very inspiring book for artists with an imagination "outside of the box".

      Book Description

As mapmaker and photographer for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Henry Peter Bosse (1844-1903) took more than three hundred photographs of the Upper Mississippi River from 1883 to 1893. His work was almost unknown until five separate volumes of his photographs were discovered during the past few years. Since then, Bosse's work has been exhibited at the Smithsonian and sold by leading auction houses to private collectors around the world. Views on the Mississippi brings together for the first time almost one hundred of Bosse's most stunning images. These cyanotype photographs trace the river from Minneapolis to St. Louis, capturing the Mississippi as it was transformed from an untamed natural wonder to a modern commercial highway. A detailed reproduction of Bosse's rare landmark map of the river, first published in 1887-88, is a fascinating guide to the historic Upper Mississippi.

"Views on the Mississippi transports readers back more than one hundred years and puts them behind the camera of a photographer and mapmaker whose work is recognized around the world. The photos-of the river, its bridges, towns, bluffs, barges, and boats-provide a view of the river during its early development as a major commercial highway and recreation area. . . . Includes many marvelous vistas of the breadth and sweep of the river." Minneapolis Star Tribune

"Mark Neuzil has assembled a stunning array of nineteenth-century photos. . . . While researching another topic, he stumbled upon the bluish cyanotype photos made by U.S. Army Corps of Engineers mapmaker Henry Bosse. Neuzil could not pass up the chance to give readers a lesson in river history, biology, urban planning, engineering, and industry." Des Moines Register

"Views on the Mississippi opens a window on the great river before its face was changed by America's industrial boom and navigation construction projects. It is part travelogue, part history, part a collection of works of art." St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Mark Neuzil is associate professor of journalism and mass communication and environmental studies at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul.

1 out of 5 stars STUNNING PHOTOGRAPHS! INACCURATE HISTORY!.......2002-04-26

Henry Peter Bosse's exquisite photographs of the Upper Mississippi River, taken between 1883 and 1893, are little known today owing to their great scarcity. Fewer than two hundred of his images have ever reached the open market, and there has yet to be a major museum exhibition of his work. Despite this, Bosse's large cyanotypes currently sell in the twenty thousand dollar range and are much sought after by museums and discerning photo collectors. A first rate book on his career and images has been needed for over a decade.

Sadly, that need has yet to be fulfilled. Mark Neuzil's decidedly poor offering contributes only badly reproduced photographs and a text that, while eminently readable, is overshadowed by glaring inaccuracies.

Early on, Neuzil opines that Bosse "...was tutored in Greek and Latin and completed classical studies at Magdeburg (Germany) where he added courses in engineering and art..." (pg.7). But in the next sentence he notes, "There was no university at Magdeburg at the time...", and cites a sole obituary as a basis for his "facts" regarding Bosse's education. Since Neuzil also notes that there are no known historical documents pertaining to Bosse prior to his arrival in the U.S. this attribution seems something of a stretch.

On the next page he names Montgomery Meigs, U.S. Civil Engineer, as a possible photography tutor to Bosse, citing Meigs' experience with a camera and his own cyanotypes. A little rudimentary research on the author's part would have revealed that all of Meigs' known photos date from AFTER 1893, by which time Bosse had apparently stopped taking pictures.

Two paragraphs on, Neuzil emphatically states that, "In the floating office that was the BARNARD (a Corps riverboat) Bosse possibly enjoyed the company of Mark Twain...(because)...Some of the author's river travel in 1882 came via the BARNARD, ...captained...by a friend of Twain's."

This must come as a huge surprise to Twain scholars. The author's 1882 Mississippi River trip was fully chronicled by the popular press of the day and neither they nor any Twain historian since ever stumbled across this piece of information. Neuzil offers no source for the tidbit, and actually can't do so - for the simple reason that it never happened!

The author also claims that in 1878 Bosse began work for the Rock Island Engineer Office, "...where he was employed as chief draftsman until his death in 1903." However, Mary Forresta's introduction to Neuzil's book states (correctly) that F.S. Eastman was chief draftsman at Rock Island when Bosse arrived. Indeed, Bosse only achieved that position after Eastman left the job some years later.

An author's perceived veracity is of paramount interest to the reader, particularly when that author is writing history or offering himself as an expert on the subject at hand. The errors mentioned here occur IN THE FIRST TEN PAGES and only the need for brevity prohibits pointing to more. Add to the mix a collection of images that, while fascinating, are still bland and tepid versions of Bosse's originals and you have VIEWS ON THE MISSISSIPPI.

That said, buy it anyway. Henry Bosse's photographs deserve far wider circulation than they have achieved, which is a pity. His images offer us an intimate glimpse of Mark Twain's Mississippi River, up close and personal - or at least closer than anyone else of the period. If you enjoy Mark Twain and/or the Mississippi you'll enjoy Bosse's photos - but take the attached history with substantially more than a pinch of salt. Actually, take it with a great honkin' truck load.

5 out of 5 stars A must buy for any "River Rat".......2001-11-15

Mark Neuzil and Merry Foresta have brought back to life with this book a Mississippi River that has long since disappeared below the brackish water of the Big Muddy. Henry Peter Bosse captured on film the Mississippi River that Mark Twain navigated as a river boat captain, the Mormans had to traverse leaving Nauvoo, IL for points west and that Lewis and Clark travelled on the way to the west coast. He did this at a time just before it disappeared below the backwaters of today's lock and dam system. Bosse's photographs, while valued at over $1,000,000 are priceless to those of us that have looked out over the river as it exists today and wondered "What lies below the surface of that water?" or "What did the river look like before the lock and dams were built"
If you have ever lived on or loved "The River" this book is a must buy!

What is it that wins wars? Is it the amount or gore, the size of the weapons, the death toll...or is it the honor of the men who fought there, defending a code of honor unknown to ordinary man....

With wit and grace,Ralph T. Johnson facetiously reminds us of the courage that a battle asks of its warriors in his light hearted rendition of World War II,"Which Way Did They Go." As a WWII veteran,Johnson knows first-hand the spirit crushing mentality of combat and that moments of folly that keep our soldiers alive.

In war, Johnson realized that it is these moments of humor,of sarcasm,of pure madness that allow soldiers to maintain their sanity. Thus,"Which Way Did They Go" focuses on the ridiculous side of World War II,giving its readers a personal tour through the minds and hearts of warriors on the brink of battle. For it is their spirit, their strength or will, that bores triumph of morbib chaos.

Thus, war is not composed solely of blood and gore-but of the men and women who fight the battle, tapping into whatever resources necessary to survive. For it is the heart os the soldier that sets him free from the chains of the in herent resistance.

            Book Description

Ponies and Picnics, All in Sequence, Chicken Coops are just some of the curious chapter headings of stories in this "must read" delightful memoir by Mick Jeffs who by chance in 1979 became a tour operator, organising and accompanying holidays at home and abroad across a wide spectrum of destinations.

Mick, a 'lucky bloke' from birth, survived a Siamese twin separation when days old, a huge German bomb landing nearby at three and meningitis (thanks to duck eggs) when he was five. That good fortune has continued throughout his life so far and enabled him to turn impending disasters into triumph. Rejecting a one star shanty town and ending up in a five star resort; restoring the faith of 150 mainly North Country people who expected roast beef and Yorkshire pudding - and got spaghetti bolognese on paper plates; overcoming the problems of a sudden death while escorting 180 people in Florida, are just a few of the stories he tells.

Which Way Did They Go? relates a brief history of Mick's life until 1979, when he found himself in the travel business, and on to 1990 by which time his tour operation, Going Places, was firmly established in Plymouth and the farther reaches of the West country and beyond as a good company with which to travel.

                  Book Description

Stephen King has been hailed as a writer of the late 20th century Everyman, yet his representations of women remain debatable. These essays not only explore his portrayal of female characters, they illuminate Stephen King's own psychology and that of our culture's fears, anxieties, and feminine obsessions. The various works examined include Carrie, Gerald's Game, Rose Madder, Holloween, Friday the 13th, Dolores Claiborne, It, Christine, and Misery. The essays progress through various discussions of female power versus male authority, the association of female with evil, and King's monster imagery associated with the mother-figure characters. Written by various scholars and professors, these essays offer rare insight into the treatement of the female characters of Stephen King's imagination. The works of Stephen King are as popular as they are contested. Delineated by his precise commentary on the late 20th century culture, and most notably American culture, his horror fiction strikes a more specific, personal note with readers. These essays tap into the feminine aspect of King's social commentary. Concentrating on his treatment of female characters, these essays explore Stephen King's exposure of the fears, anxieties, and obsessions concerning the female and feminine that our culture harbors. The numerous works analyzed in this book provide a comprehensive study of King's treatment of the feminine, and what it implies about our culture and Stephen King.

5 out of 5 stars Maybe a Close Reading is Required.......2005-05-04

I feel that this book has been grossly misread. First I think it is necessary to note that films such as Halloween and Friday the 13th are not credited as King's work. Both films are mentioned twice, once the genre that King is a part of and again as a part of the slasher genre.

I found the works in this text to be incredibly fascinating. I did not agree with all the theories presented in all the essays, but rarely does one come across an entire book of theories that they will wholly agree with. Indeed, some seem downright absurd. But the refreshful and often insightful essays written by these authors are a welcome change from the usual high-brow rhetoric that one comes across all too often when wading through literary criticism.

The bias toward feminism is present, and it can't be denied. But as this texts is a selection of essays about women, it is not shocking to find feminist theories and ideas in the roots of these works.

Considering that the topic of women in King's work is a fascinating subject to me, perhaps that's why I found this text so intriguing. Obviously it must be read with a critical eye to avoid any misinterpretations.

1 out of 5 stars Authors are completely clueless........2004-05-18

It is obvious that the authors wouldn't know a King book if it fell on them. Complete and total trash, not worth the paper it's printed on.

1 out of 5 stars If they say so..........2003-12-16

First of all, Stephen King didn't write "Holloween" (as the moron who wrote the book review spelled it) and he didn't write Friday The 13th. Did the person who wrote this book even read any of what he's wrote? Or is she just talking out her behind?

                  5 out of 5 stars A welcomed correction.......1999-03-09

Not EVERYman agrees with King's views of the situation. I may be in the minority, but I fully agree with the findings of these Editors, basing my full agreement on the work of James Hillman, a genuine Champion of Soul, who aptly wrote that "Hades (I add Hekate, the Mother) is not a monster; the Ego is." But, not to worry, Stephanie Queen is not mocked :).

This book Published by the Greenhill Military Manuals. Is another fine exsample of this series of books. O'Malley has taken a broad look at all known artillery peices. The book gives a good discription, little bit of history and outstanding specifications on each peice of equipment, The book small size & hardcover helps, if you need a good book to identify those peices of equipment in the heat of battle. This book also provides the curious reader enough information to understand, without drowning them in tech talk. I have read the book and use it in my own referance collection. I enjoyed the book and recommend this book to my fellow readers. I should know a good artillery book when I see it. Since, I work on this equipment for the U.S. Army.

                      Book Description

What terrible secret was buried in Shi Huangdi's tomb? Did nomads like lizard stew? What happened to Anansi the Spider in the Village of the Plantains? And how did a six-year-old become the last emperor of Rome?

Told in a straightforward, engaging style that has become Susan Wise Bauer's trademark, The Story of the World covers the sweep of human history from ancient times until the present. Africa, China, Europe, the Americas- find out what happened all around the world in long-ago times. This first volume begins with the earliest nomads and ends with the last Roman emperor.

This read-aloud series is designed for parents to share with elementary-school children. Enjoy it together and introduce your child to the marvelous story of the world's civilizations.

2 out of 5 stars Not for younger children.......2007-09-27

Now, keep in mind that I have not read the book and have no idea how good it is for older children. This is specifically for younger children. I bought this book to read aloud to my 5 year old thinking it would be a fun way to introduce her to ancient cultures in our homeschool. Boy, was I surprised when it arrived and it was just a normal sized paperback with no pictures! It is not something that any but the most cerebral 5 year old would sit through. So it will sit on my shelf collecting dust until she is ready for it. Also, considering that it is just a paperback with no pictures it is really not worth the price even for older kids. Maybe grab it from your local library, but don't buy it.

4 out of 5 stars One of the best children's narratives on the market.......2007-08-17

In my mind, S. Wise Bauer has attempted and succeeded: She has made history fun again. The children reading (or listening to) the books will not be writing a dissertation based upon what she has written-- but they will be inclined to pick up another history book, and another... Her writing will get them thinking and talking about history beyond dates.

That's why I like this series. I believe some of the negative reviewers have lost site of the purpose: To engage readers on an elementary level. If readers are following the classical model, they will see more detailed information about the events again (probably twice). This first go round just provides a point of reference for later study.

Examining historical events does not begin and end with one book or source. A true historian will pull together many resources in order to form a composite.

In defense of Bauer's writing, I think that some reviewers are expecting a grammar stage history "holy grail" of some sort. I have yet to find one. Every history book has it's pros and cons. In my mind, this one has more pros than cons.

Bauer does not claim to be the final resource or authority for grammar stage world history. As a matter of fact, she provides extensive lists of additional resources in her other books, like the Well Trained Mind and in the companion workbook. This is the main reason I give this book 4 stars. I wish I could give 4.5. Perhaps an abbreviated version of the resource lists should be included in each volume as an appendix if it is going to stand alone.

Overall, I think it's great for what it aims to do: spark discussion and develop life long learners.

2 out of 5 stars Liked the format and presentation - not the facts.......2007-06-27

I was looking for a history book as I homeschool my daughter. I was very happy with the workbook format and projects as well as history presented in chronological order. As I am not a history scholar, I was enjoying learning the history along with my daughter up until I was reading her chapter on Christianity. Being a Christian who has studied much of the bible, I am familiar with a good amount of these facts. Some of the facts she presents are so wrong that now I question many of the facts she presents from other cultures. If you are looking for an easy read and presentation of different cultures this book is good. I will continue thru the series as I do like certain things about it, however, I am now aware of its weakness and will use other books to supplement the fact presented so the information will be more accurate.

                      3 out of 5 stars It's OK, but I'm wishing for more.......2007-03-22

My expectations for this book were too high, based on some reviews, although I was worried about comments about inaccuracies. I found it disappointing.

I think what I react against is that this book is just one of many which seem to say the only ancient history that's at all important is what happened in the Middle East and the Eastern Mediterranean. There is a chapter on India and a chapter on China, but they are hat-tipping kinds of chapters that don't give the awesome breadth of those amazing cultures. And I was super disappointed with the chapter on the Americas. Mexico, according to this book's geography, is part of Central America. North Americans are all termed nomads, as if they were wandering around aimlessly instead of in the amazing variety of communities that they really lived in - some villages, some awesome cities, and others who didn't settle in permanent villages still had definite territories they exploited.

There is actually more material given on characters of the Bible, which are not labelled as from the Bible but treated as actual historical characters, than there is on the ancient Americas, or ancient China for that matter.

This really doesn't seem to be the story of the world, but the story of western civilization, with a smattering of other cultures thrown in as an afterthought.

                        Book Description

History has been taught in a boring way for far too long.

A subject as moving and powerful as humanity's past should be inviting, and when it is told well, it is. Susan Wise Bauer succeeds in telling the captivating story of history with her best-selling history series. Parents and young readers have fallen in love with her narrative history, The Story of the World, and its accompanying Activity Book.

Now teachers and home educators can take advantage of a new and valuable learning tool.

These easy-to-use tests and answer keys, successfully used by hundreds of parents and teachers, provide an objective method for measuring retention of key facts, figures, and events from history. A combination of sequencing, matching, short-answer, and essay-style questions gives students a chance to show what they've learned.

Used with the Activity Book and The Story of the World, the tests give educators a complete history curriculum for their elementary school students.
