This is a detailed study of the workings of the various parts of the British state in their confrontation with the radical movements of Chartism and Irish nationalism. The year 1848 was notable, first, for the immense influence of the French revolution of February upon the whole of Britain and, second, for the decisive defeats suffered by the radical movements. Professor Saville’s analysis is based upon government and municipal archives, newspapers and contemporary writings, and proceeds chronologically from January to late summer, when mass arrests ended the insurgent movements on both sides of the Irish Channel. A further chapter looks at length at the workings of the legal system, and the volume concludes with a general commentary on the political consequences of the decline of Chartism which followed the defeats of 1848.

This book charts the course of working- and middle-class radical politics in England from the continental revolutions of 1848 to the fall of Gladstone’s Liberal government in 1874. The author traces the genealogy of English radicalism from its roots in Protestant Dissent and the seventeenth-century revolutions, but also shows how this shared radical tradition was problematized by middle-class radicals’ acceptance of classical liberal economics. She traces the lineaments of this divide by contrasting middle- and working-class responses to the continental revolutions of 1848–9, to the Polish and Italian nationalism of the 1860s, and to the Paris Commune in 1871. She argues that these years witnessed not the relentless liberalization of working-class radical protest in England, but rather a significant diminution of middle-class radicals’ commitment to liberal economics. This accommodation contributed to the emergence of the ‘New Liberalism’ of the 1880s, and helped to shape middle- and working-class responses to the early socialist movement.

It's a great read, excellent info, well done! What I really must compliment

not too much in-depth info where you might "lose" a parent. I think that
type of writing is even good for professionals working in the field because

While currently experiencing all the facets of development with my 14 yr. old son including self-inquiry, biology, personality, teen hormones, and environment, I found there to be lots of "psycho-babble" in most books.I also found that as a parent, I too needed a "life-coach", a source to provide clear concrete paths to choose from. One's that fit. One's that helped guide this very personal and individualized process. I FINALLY found this in Dr. Lisa's book. She gave us "years" of time and research, which afforded us the TIME we needed to give to our son. This is large. And essential. A road map, with good directions. A brilliant combination.

I bought a copy of this book and left it out for the whole family to see, letting my 2 teenagers know that I care enough to be informed, as well as to let them know there are resources available for them.

Dr. Boesky is a really good writer. This subject matter is hard to think about or deal with. Dr. Boesky writing style is clear and to the point, which makes it a lot easier to read, comprehend and act on.

I wish teenagers were not this difficult, but when they are, this book is there to truly help.

Saving Families Agony and Suffering.......2007-07-02

When to Worry by Dr. Lisa can save families a lot of agony and suffering. I found it to be a very detailed and concise guide in how to weave your way through what can be very confusing and scary (and complicated!) in the mental health system. Thank God my daughter has this reference book to turn to for guidance in raising her teenage sons. I have bought copies for everyone in my life who is raising or working with a teenager. And I even donated a few copies to the counselors at the middle school where I live. I wish there were a Dr. Lisa years ago when I was struggling with one of my own children.

Every US citizen who cares about their continued safety and the ongoing freedom of this country should read this book. The 10 steps that Mr. Gaffney outlines in it are frightening, enlightening and motivational all at the same time.

I truly believe that this book, and the principles within it should be part of the required curriculum taught to our children in all public schools in the US.

This book was an eye-opener for me. I can't believe that our leaders haven't put all 10 steps into action to win the war for the free world. This book made me realize that we all have to get actively involved in preserving the freedoms we enjoy today and ensuring that our children and grandchildren understand the threats we face and how much we have to lose.

Great book on the war.......2006-05-09

This is a great book and really explains, in one place, every aspect of the war we are facing: from what needs to be done from a military point of view, to cultural initiatives. It explains that we are NOT fighting the religion of Islam, we are fighting people who hold the IDEOLOGY of (Saudi Wahhabist) islamo-fascism, or "Islamism", (or just: Islamic fundamentalism). This book discusses everything from illegal immigration, to EMP attacks (electromagnetic pulse attacks that would knock out our infrastructure). This book puts it all together in one book. Each page contains insights that cut right to the chase, without any "grandstanding". There is more in this book of real value than in 10 other books on the subject, combined. I just hope our politicians are reading it.

A chilling book that every American needs to read.......2006-03-23

This is the first book I have strongly urged anyone to buy, ever. It is the most chilling book I have yet read and It should be required reading for every American, because it will take a few million of us to become politically active enough to start making a difference.
"Is it accurate?" The contributors all have very strong pedigrees and it is heavily footnoted. Researching the footnotes reveals that not only is Gaffney & company not exaggerating, in some cases they may be understating the threat.

This is not about liberals and conservatives. This is about having the freedom of choice and the way of life we enjoy today. I urge you to buy it, read it, and pass this information on to your trusted networks. We must get this knowledge in the hands of as many Americans as possible, and quickly.
Here are some of the subjects it explores:
1. The rise of Islamofascism, a totalitarian ideology that masquerades as religion; how it is funded; and how it threatens today's Free World and how it poses an even more immediate menace to the majority of Muslims who do not agree with their agenda.
2. The very real nuclear threat to the U.S. that makes bombing a major city small by comparison; and what our threats 1) know about it, and/or 2) could possess the technology.
3. The rise of totalitarian regimes in oil-rich states and the rising economic and military power of one not-so-oil-rich nation; including Dictator Hugo Chavez' rise to power, his dismantling of Venezuela's democracy, his intentions for the US and how he'll pay for it.

A Good Overview of Bird Behavior.......2001-03-16

If you want a technical guide to the size, coloration and other particulars of a specific bird species then it would be in your best interests to obtain one of the many American bird field guides that are available on this subject. However, if you are interested the habits of birds as they fit into the overall ecological scheme of nature without being overwhelmed by technical details then this is the book for you.

John Dennis has written a highly readable book that reveals the lifestyles of birds as they interact with each other and the environment. In a series of essays Dennis covers such subjects as bird food preferences, migratory behavior, winter survival, competition, avian aggression and others. Dennis supports his points with his own personal observations as a lifelong biologist and birder, as well as those observations cited from birding books and journals spanning the 20th century. In addition, the 65 delightful pencil sketchings illustrating the avian behavior described in the text are worth the price of the book alone.

I whole-heartedly recommend "Beyond the Bird Feeder" for any naturalist's bookshelf, particularly of those for whom birding may be a secondary interest. The book provides an excellent one-source overview of avian habits that may lead those so interested into other more technical treatments of this subject.

Difficult to find a particular bird........1999-06-12

This book is written like a novel and the birds are not separated by species. In order to find behavior of a particular bird you have to reference several pages and read lots of text.
