Buy American: The Untold Story of Economic Nationalism
Dana Frank Manufacturer: Beacon Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0807047112 |
Amazon.com
When U.S. citizens were urged to "buy American" in the early 1930s in order to boost the national economy, African American thinkers such as Robert Abbott were quick to point out the irony: "Certainly we'll buy America first," he wrote, and went on to list the many products he'd now be buying--like steak dinner in a restaurant and theater tickets--which he had never been allowed to buy because of segregation laws. Not all Americans were as savvy as Abbott, however, and a tradition of "economic nationalism" that excluded from free trade almost as many within the borders of the United States as it did without enjoyed some success in those years, as it had in the years leading up to the American Revolution. Post-segregation, "Buy American" has become, among other things, an empty slogan for businesses who wish to appeal to patriotic sensibilities (like Wal-Mart, which just happens to also have "Buy Canadian" and "Buy Mexican" campaigns for its stores in those countries). In Buy American, Dana Frank advocates a "celebration" of the democratic ideal of such economic movements while refocusing the idea of "protectionism" to boost not simply corporate profits but the global interests of working people. This book is ripe with ideas, and so engagingly written that even chapters on 18th-century trade wars and 19th-century tariffs make for lively reading. --Maria DolanBook Description
Are imports really to blame for disappearing American jobs? Tracing the history and politics of economic nationalism from the American Revolution to the present, labor historian Dana Frank demonstrates how "Buy American" campaigns are not a new idea. This entertaining story is full of surprises, including misguided heroes, chilling racism, and more than a few charlatans. Frank contributes a much needed new approach to the old debate between free trade and protectionism. She outlines a strategy that would serve the needs of working Americans instead of the interests of corporations and economic elites.Customer Reviews:

The Naval Institute Guide to Combat Fleets of the World 2002-2003: Their Ships, Aircraft, and Systems
A. D., III Baker Manufacturer: US Naval Institute Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: CD-ROM ASIN: 1557502072 |
Book Description
Designed to operate in a Windows Help format, the CD-ROM version of Combat Fleets 2002-2003 allows rapid access to specific information and fast navigation between countries, ship types, and classes. Information can be retrieved through three easy navigational tools. First, the table of contents lists information in a format much like that of Windows Explorer, with all the subjects in files under each folder (country). For the second navigational tool, data is located through an index function that contains key words for ships, aircraft, and systems listed alphabetically. The final tool is a search function that allows the user to enter a key word. It's that simple. Once a topic is selected it appears in a display window on the right of the screen so that the user can see the requested information while having access to other topics.Like previous editions, this new version includes copy-and-paste features for the text and more than 4,000 photographs and 175 line drawings. These nearly all-new illustrations can be retrieved through a click-to-view command or by going to the image file via the table of contents. The CD-ROM continues to provide a pronunciation feature for ship names, as well as a conversion calculator for converting numeric values.

Body of Secrets: Anatomy of the Ultra-Secret National Security Agency
James Bamford Manufacturer: Anchor ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:

Everybody knows about the CIA--the cloak-and-dagger branch of the U.S. government. Many fewer are familiar with the National Security Agency, even though it has been more important to American espionage in recent years than its better-known counterpart. The NSA is responsible for much of the intelligence gathering done via technology such as satellites and the Internet. Its home office in Maryland "contains what is probably the largest body of secrets ever created."Little was known about the agency's confidential culture until veteran journalist James Bamford blew the lid off in 1982 with his bestseller The Puzzle Palace. Still, much remained in the shadows. In Body of Secrets, Bamford throws much more light on his subject--and he reveals loads of shocking information. The story of the U-2 crisis in 1960 is well known, including President Eisenhower's decision to tell a fib to the public in order to protect a national-security secret. Bamford takes the story a disturbing step forward, showing how Eisenhower "went so far as to order his Cabinet officers to hide his involvement in the scandal even while under oath. At least one Cabinet member directly lied to the committee, a fact known to Eisenhower." Even more worrisome is another revelation, from the Kennedy years: "The Joint Chiefs of Staff drew up and approved plans for what may be the most corrupt plan ever created by the U.S. government. In the name of anticommunism, they proposed launching a secret and bloody war of terrorism against their own country in order to trick the American public into supporting an ill-conceived war they intended to launch against Cuba."
Body of Secrets is an incredible piece of journalism, and it paints a deeply troubling portrait of an agency about which the public knows next to nothing. Fans of The Sword and the Shield will want to read it, as will anybody who is intrigued by conspiracies and real-life spy stories. --John J. Miller
Book Description
The National Security Agency is the world’s most powerful, most far-reaching espionage. Now with a new afterword describing the security lapses that preceded the attacks of September 11, 2001, Body of Secrets takes us to the inner sanctum of America’s spy world. In the follow-up to his bestselling Puzzle Palace, James Banford reveals the NSA’s hidden role in the most volatile world events of the past, and its desperate scramble to meet the frightening challenges of today and tomorrow.Customer Reviews:
