Book Description
Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes (1746–1828) spent the last four years of his life living in Bordeaux with other political émigrés from Spain and South America. In those years he created small-scale, intimate pieces, including uncommissioned portraits of friends and family, miniature paintings on ivory plaques, and numerous drawings and lithographs. These works attest to the artist’s continuing vitality in his old age and also offer insight into his life in Bordeaux.
This beautiful book presents fifty-one key works from Goya’s late period along with two essays that illuminate his works of that time. Jonathan Brown retells the story of Goya’s difficult years in exile when he nevertheless continued to make art, experimenting with the new medium of lithography, inventing a technique of miniature painting on ivory, and painting remarkable portraits of friends and supporters. Susan Grace Galassi describes the rich historical and cultural milieu of Bordeaux and establishes a biographical context and sense of place that underscore the triumph of Goya’s final achievement.

a serious art book.......2000-08-22
I'm aware of only one other book, now decades out of print, that does equivalent justice to Goya's stunning, apocalyptic final visions. Even the current big, ritzy Goya monographs can't touch the top-quality reproductions that this book offers, printed as they are on a curious matt paper, thin and oddly textured, but affording an excellent impression of the painterly quality of these impasto nightmares. The author's text and various 'poetic' contributions are B-grade, but not to worry; this is not a book to read but to LOOK AT and be transported by, into a dream that, while exhilarating, one is releived to wake from. Hang the expense! If you love Goya, you must have this startling book.

Glad to see you back, chuck!.......1998-06-05
Although it's sad to think that there may be no more Wallace and Gromit films (the animator, Nick Park, seems to be into other projects at the moment), this comic book captures a lot of the Wallace and Gromit spirit. There are a lot of wonderful little sight-gags (check out the titles of the books Gromit reads) and the storylines in the two adventures are similar in wackiness to those of the films. Still, it's a little disappointing not to get to see Wallace and Gromit _moving_, and you have to imagine Wallace's voice (though the authors did do a good job of conjuring up things he would be likely to say). There are a few rough spots, but in general it's a very good comic-type book, very funny and rereadable. If the Aardman folks don't see fit to make more Wallace and Gromit films, I hope there will at least be more "adventures" like this.

pathetic.......2004-05-05
This writer would prefer to keep everyone on welfare! Hate anyone who accomplishes anything. Did he ever have a poor person give him a job? He is so blinded by his ignorance that he can't realize there are good and bad people in any political party. This book is really not worth anything.
useless trash.......2004-01-02
complete waste. Just think of all the trees they are killing by printing this book.
Tell it as it is!.......2002-05-20
My name is Mrs. LeeAnn Albert. I am always prejiduce against Demacratics, And Always completely horrable acting in front of my students UNTIL I HURT THERE FEELING. he he.I am a bigot. I am also a Repulican because my morals are bad, the poor should get poorer, the rich should get richer,(including me, and my redneck sons that abuse me)and enviormeant should be destroied, wether it means killing a species, or never recycling, or eliminating alaska or the everglades for oil, or our own personal amusement, if its going to get "the rich" more money. Everything in this book is true, and 100% acurate. It is the best book ever, and I don't know why. Thanks for reading but I better get back to my biogetry!:-) White Power, he he!
And Another Waste of Money.......1999-12-19
This is another uncreative, unfunny list - a jumble of isolated words and quotations that are intended to bring laughter (I suppose) but which quickly become tedious and oppressive.
A real waste of time and money as is its companion volume - 888 reasons to Hate Democrats.
Book Description
Praxial Music Education is a collection of essays by nineteen internationally recognized scholars in music education. Each essay offers critical reflections on a key topic in contemporary music education. The starting point of each essay, and the unifying thread of this collection, is the "praxial" philosophy of music education explained in Elliott's Music Matters: A New Philosophy of Music Education (OUP, 1995). This philosophy argues for a socially and artistically grounded concept of music and music education, challenging the field's traditional "absolutist" foundations. Praxial Music Education is both a critical companion to Music Matters, and an independent text on contemporary issues in music education. Among the themes discussed are multicultural music education, the nature of musical understanding, early childhood music education, the nature and teaching of music listening, music curriculum development, and musical creativity. Praxial music education is a living theory; a dedicated web site (http://www.nyu.edu/education/music/musicmat) offers Elliott's reflections and "dialogues" with each author's ideas. This unique collection will not only enrich discussions that already use Music Matters as their core, but will globalize current discussions and applications of the praxial philosophy and emphasize the positive and practical values of collaborative efforts in music education. A companion to Music Matters, this book is designed to spark debate and deeper analysis of this influential theory in music education.
Customer Reviews:
Praxial Music Education.......2006-11-03
Praxial Music Education did and excellent job of describing the various views of the way music should be taught today. The thing that I appreciated most was that Mr. Elliott defined the term "praxial" at the very beginning so that I was cognizant of the philosophies described. It was written in plain, understandable English for the most part, and I was grateful for that.
Another outstanding contribution.......2005-04-06
Elliott's "Music Matters" stands as one of the most important, substantial, and brilliant music education books in the history of our profession. Elliott continues his deeply thoughtful and original ways in "Praxial Music Education," which offers sixteen excellent essays on most aspects of the praxial philosophy he presents in "Music Matters," and a dedicated web site where Elliott replies to and "dialogues" respectfully with his colleagues. By welcoming intelligent criticism of his work in this way, Elliott has done what no other music education scholar has ever done, and he has set a new standard for other scholars in our field. The international roster of authors in this essay collection includes many of the finest minds in our profession. Their discussions are deep and well written, and the collection is very well balanced in terms of national and gender perspectives. I will use this book in my graduate foundations course. It is a model of what I want my students to witness: fine, critically-reflective minds in conversation about crucial issues.
it's about time.......2005-02-23
Why do so many fields of study utilize methods of dialogue for discourse? Because dialogue challenges and motivates. Then why has there been barely any dialogue in music education? David Elliott's new book has come out without an agenda for dictating but a platform for discussion -- it is a refreshing and honorable approach. If more scholars thought to do as David Elliott has done, perhaps music educators would have more than two philosophies of music education to learn from! Bravo!
Book Description
This analysis of Western Sydney's myriad faces explores its roles as suburban wonderland, ethnic trouble spot, home of gated communities. Western Sydney has become notorious for its supposedly uncharitable attitudes toward migrants and asylum-seekers, yet it's still the number-one destination for new arrivals. Evidence about the region's aspirations and social attitudes, and its place in the political nation, is surveyed. The area's recent reputation for racism and intolerance is explored as well.

Book Description
Alexander examines the history of the labor movement in Brazil during its two key phases. First, he looks at the origins and early development of the movement from the last decades of the 19th century until the Revolution of 1930. Then he analyzes the impact of the corporate state structure that President Getulio Vargas imposed on labor during his first tenure in power, and the continuation of that structure during most of the remainder of the century. Until 1930, the trajectory of the labor movement in Brazil was quite similar to what was happening in most of the rest of Latin America. Most of the early labor organizations were mutual-benefit societies rather than trade unions. This began to change in the early 1900s. From the onset, organized labor in Brazil was involved with politics, and organized labor had to deal not only with the opposition of employers, but also with that of successive conservative governments. All this changed with the ascent of Vargas to power in 1930. He sought to win the support of the urban working class, and with the coming of the "New State" in 1937, the government was deeply involved in the direction of union activities. After 1945, Brazilian labor was once more influenced by a variety of different political currents, and by the 1960s the labor movement began to extend into the rural sector of the economy. The Constitution of 1988 allowed workers to organize without government control and they won the right to strike. By 1990 the Brazilian labor movement had attained the structure and characteristics it would retain into the new century. A major resource for scholars, students, and other researchers involved with Brazilian labor, economic, and political affairs.

Oustanding Introduction to the Army of Tennessee.......2004-07-15
Mr. Daniel's book is a great place to start if you have an interest in the Confederate Army of Tennessee. It's a soldier's point of view of all things military. To fully understand this interesting army you will still need to go to Thomas Connelly's masterful "Army of The Heartland" and "Autumn of Glory", but start here. If you've already read Connelly then this book is a great compliment to those works.
An excellent source on the Army of Tennessee Soldiers..........2002-10-24
Finally, A book that goes into detail on the soldiers of the Army of Tennessee. This books quotes from diaries and letters from the Soldiers themselves. This is a true treasure!! I would also suggest The Army of the Heartland and Autumn of Glory by Thomas Connelly in addtion to this book. Both of these detail the Army of Tennessee from its founding until its surrender in Bentonville NC in 1865. I highly reccomend this book!!

Acclaim for The Global Class War
"You will never think about 'free trade' the same way after reading Jeff Faux's superb book. As Faux makes clear, the globalization debate is really about whose interests are served by global elites, and how we need to go about reclaiming a democracy that serves ordinary people. This book should transform public discourse in America."
-Robert Kuttner, founding coeditor of the American Prospect and a contributing columnist to BusinessWeek
"Jeff Faux's astonishing story of how class works will scandalize the best names in Wall Street and Washington-especially the much admired Robert Rubin, who along with other elites colluded behind the backs of ordinary citizens in Mexico, Canada, and the United States. The most cynical Americans will be shocked by the sordid details. This really is an important book."
-William Greider, author of The Soul of Capitalism and Secrets of the Temple
"Globalization is a cover for American imperialism, but the beneficiaries are not the American people at the expense of foreigners but corporate executives at the expense of working-class and poor people wherever they may be. Jeff Faux offers a comprehensive and devastating analysis."
-Chalmers Johnson, author of The Sorrows of Empire
Customer Reviews:
Clubby "governing class" with its fingers in its ears.......2007-07-15
Basically, a lot of governmental decisions (such as the North American Free Trade Agreement, or NAFTA) get made by the "governing class", an insular group of government officials closely linked with the business world; alternative viewpoints (such as labor or environmental concerns) tend to be minimized. This results in outcomes that are not only detrimental to individuals and society in general, but can also backfire and hurt business as well (higher health care costs and the loss of the US steel industry are examples given).
NAFTA promised "good jobs" (many tied in to the import/export business), for Americans and Canadians, as well as better job opportunities (and less illegal immigration) for Mexicans. What happened, though, was a lot of manufacturing moved from the US to Mexico, where the lower wages paid did little to stimulate the economy. Mexico was hurt further when manufacturing, ever in search of cheaper labor, moved production to Asia.
There is also discussion about global organizations such as the WTO and their meetings in Davos. Same clubbiness, but on a worldwide basis. Labor, etc. is again shut out or co-opted by business, and what opposition there is often ends up ineffectual.
Even the US invasion of Iraq had a basis in developing markets for multinationals, not just oil and/or military strategy.
The subtitle states "How America's Bipartisan Elite Lost Our Future". The author does blame Clinton as much as he does Bush (41) for ramming NAFTA through over the objections of labor, environmental and other concerned groups. (Canadian and Mexican leadership, including the high level of corruption in Mexico, are also called to task) And he points out that almost as much corporate money flows to Democrats as it does to Republicans.
But he does save most of his opprobrium for the right: the "think tanks of the 1970's, followed by Reagan and Thatcher; the rise of the religious right; Friedman, etc.
Finally, the author puts forth his plan to "Win it back": a "Continental Democracy", essentially a reformed version of NAFTA with labor, environmental, and human rights provisions explicitly written in and enforced. In addition, a "Citizens Continental Congress" would be implemented. The three countries would be divided into several geographical regions, some of which would cross national borders ("Nine Nations of North America" anyone?). Sounds like part of a plan, but actaully "belling the cat" (i.e. getting the governing class to listen, let alone implement it) is left as an open exercise.
Neither the premise nor the conclusion is a surprise here.......2007-05-28
The premise of this book is that the global elites are more loyal to their own class than to their country of origin (see the discussion of universal health care in America under Clinton) and the conclusion is that the working class will be hurt more by the coming economic catastrophes in America than will the global elite who are the cause. In between those "well, duh" moments is a reasoned and thorough exposition of how NAFTA came into being and the consequences for the working class, especially in Mexico. Faux presents the differences between the Keynsian model and the social Darwinism under which we struggle at present. My dad was a professor of Economics, and a follower of Keynes, and he would have endorsed this book. Unfortunately, I think that Faux's idea of a North American union, while deserving of consideration, will not be accepted by US citizens.
It's the book for the young to read and reread!!.......2007-02-08
I read the book with a scant eye on the economists view of events but by the end of the first chapter I had a different attitude. I found myself thinking that my children must know this material in order to make sound decisions about their future and the future of the country. Every newscaster should be required to read this book before interviewing propective candidates for President. It has enlightend me on the workings of our government.
Insightful Analysis.......2007-01-15
Jeff Faux gives an insightful overview of the causes behind the gradual decline in living standards and income of not only the American Middle Class, but its counterpart in every other country of the world, orchestrated by the newly-globalized power-elite class. Intriguing and thought-provoking, the book looks at the big picture and brings into focus the reasons for some of the world-wide developments of which everyday people have become victims. It will give readers a whole new, and probably even more cynical take on political leaders of the present era.
The Global Class War : How America's Bipartisan Elite Lost Our Future - and What It Will Take to Win it Back.......2007-01-09

Customer Reviews:
Beautiful book........2000-01-15
This large book is an interesting conglomeration of information. It has some dated information, being that it is a first edition, and was published in '89. There are bright tidbits of insight in breeding/raising/owning endangered and the not so endangered parrots. If I have one complaint, it is that for all of it's weight, it is light on graphics. Actual photograph's of these birds in the wild, and in collections around the world would have been a wonderful addition.
