Book Description

The rulers of the Mughal Empire of India, who reigned from 1526 to 1858, spared no expense as patrons of the arts. They left as their legacy an extraordinarily rich body of commissioned artistic projects, including illustrated manuscripts and paintings that represent music-making in numerous spheres of Mughal court life, particularly that of women. These images form the basis of Bonnie C. Wade's study of how musicians of Hindustan encountered and Indianized music from the Persian cultural sphere.

Combining ethnomusicological and art historical methods with history and lore, Wade focuses first on paintings for Akbar, showing how political and cultural agendas intertwined in the portrayal of his life and that of his grandfather Babur and father, Humayun. Wade then follows the depictions of music-making through paintings for Akbar's successors, Jahangir and Shah Jahan, to trace the gradual synthesis of Persian and Indian culture. Richly illustrated with reproductions of rare Mughal paintings, this work will appeal broadly to anyone interested in Indian history, ethnomusicology, and art history.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic pictures.......2003-06-07

This book is an exploration of 16th century Mughal paintings that include musicians and instruments. Much of the book is devoted to explaining the stories behind the paintings, starting with who was Akbar the Great? Wade elucidates the history of Akbar's family, and how they came to rule India. She relates the chronicles to scenes depicted in specific historical paintings. Each of the paintings includes musicians in some form, and Wade describes in detail the instruments that the musicians are playing and the reason for their inclusion in the work. The paintings themselves are exquisite, with 165 plates reproduced in black and white and 20 in full color. The book also includes family trees of the Mughals, maps, and a glossary of musical terms.

Although the book is extraordinarily well done, it wasn't quite what I was looking for. From the title of the book, I had expected Wade to focus the text on the music of the Mughals rather than on their general history. I had expected more of the book to consider questions such as which instruments were played in Mughal times, how the instruments changed from then until now, and more generally, how much we can learn about the history of music by examining contemporary visual art works. Nevertheless, the book exemplifies excellent scholarship and it is, in itself, a magnificent work of art.

      Book Description

In this unusual book, curator and photographer Gordon MacDonald has brought together the work of contemporary photographers, archival photographs from NASA and astrological images from the 19th century. It's Wrong To Wish on Space Hardware explores the idea of a reality only experienced through photography and visions of a place we can never visit. Key to the spirit of the book is the work of Joan Fontcuberta, whose Constellations first appear to be vast panoramas of a clear night sky, but are in fact photograms of dead insects crushed against a windscreen. Similarly, the photographs in Richard Purdy's series Cr'pe/PlanAte look like hugely magnified images of distant planets, but are in fact studio pictures of pancakes. The grubby textures of the distant everyday also undermine the visionary in Adam Broomberg and Olivier Chanarin's Star City, which shows the once glorious achievements of the Soviet space program to be held together by disused, bargain-basement technology. Steve Pyke's photographs are the result of a personal quest to meet and photograph the principal characters of NASA's fabulous history. And archival photographs from NASA take on a Hollywood aesthetic, while Victorian constructed images appear to record the wonders of 19th-century astronomy.

                        Book Description

In this concise and engaging analysis of rock music, music theorist Ken Stephenson explores the features that make this internationally popular music distinct from earlier music styles. The author offers a guided tour of rock music from the 1950s to the present, emphasizing the theoretical underpinnings of the style and, for the first time, systematically focusing not on rock music's history or sociology, but on the structural aspects of the music itself.

What structures normally happen in rock music? What theoretical systems or models might best explain them? The book addresses these questions and more in chapters devoted to phrase rhythm, scales, key determination, cadences, harmonic palette and succession, and form. Each chapter provides richly detailed analyses of individual rock pieces from groups including Chicago, the Beatles, Emerson, Lake and Palmer, Kansas and others. Stephenson shows how rock music is stylistically unique, and he demonstrates how the features that make it distinct have tended to remain constant throughout the past half-century and within most substyles. For music students at the college level and for practicing rock musicians who desire a deeper understanding of their music, this book is an essential resource.

This book is a serious analytical study of rock music. It is an in depth look at the theoretical underpinnings of what makes rock unique. It is similar to the standard textbooks on tonal theory, but explores the unique aspects of rock and roll. It includes discussion of rhythm, phrasing, form and chord progression.

                          Book Description

This ambitious work offers a comprehensive mapping of the cultural landscape of China in the late twentieth century. By focusing on Chinese cultural formations and critical discourses of the last decade of the century, the book dissects the intellectual, economic, and political contradictions of a turbulent era—post-cold war, postsocialist, and postmodern—in China’s history.

The author defines the emergent logic of Chinese postmodernity within a dominant system of global capitalism and points to the central role of the transnational flow of visual culture in the establishment of local and national identity. The Chinese case demonstrates that the old conceptual scheme of Euro-American postmodernism versus Third World national culture is no longer feasible.

This wide-ranging, deeply interdisciplinary work demarcates the cultural terrain by examining diverse media: film, television, avant-garde art, and literature, as well as critical theory and intellectual history. Part I reviews the raging critical debates about the public sphere, the academy, intellectual identity, cultural politics, and economic globalization, in the process examining the Chinese appropriation of discourses of modernity, postmodernity, and postcoloniality.

Part II investigates the impact of globalization and diaspora on the formation of citizenship and nationality as articulated in mainland Chinese and Hong Kong films. Part III probes issues of post-orientalism, postmodernism, and strategies of representation in contemporary Chinese art. Part IV studies pop music, soap opera, and literary bestsellers, pinpointing the dialectic and mediating function of popular culture amid the forces of official socialist ideology, capitalist commodification, mass entertainment, and transnational images in contemporary China. Overall, the book is an insightful analysis of the ironies of the cultural logic of Chinese socialism in a period that has seen accelerated economic integration into the capitalist world system, but without major political change.

                            Book Description

Dramatic changes in Africa--the anticipated end of formal apartheid in South Africa, the emergence of newly independent nations (e.g. Zimbabwe, Namibia, and Eritrea), and demands to end one-party and military rule--call for a revaluation of the relationship between human rights, economic growth and democracy. To determine the impact of international organizations on human and worker rights and economic development in Africa, this book focuses on the International Labor Organization (ILO). The author's first hand experiences in the ILO and field research in Ghana offer a rare view of African officials and trade unionists. It is a valuable source for practitioners, scholars and students of international industrial and labor relations and African studies.

According to former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, America currently faces five threats that could undermine, if not eliminate, the United States if immediate steps are not taken to correct them. The threats as he sees them are Islamic terrorists and rogue dictatorships armed with nuclear or biological weapons; the removal of God from American public life; a loss of patriotism and sense of America's history; a decline in economic supremacy because of poor science and math education; and the increasing budgetary burden of Social Security and Medicare. To tackle these problems, Gingrich offers his "21st Century Contract with America," which he outlines in great detail in this bold and thought-provoking book. His updated contract, which comes a decade after the original Republican Contract with America that marked the high point of Gingrich's national power, calls for a dramatically simplified tax code that favors savings and investment; government investment in science and technology, particularly regarding space, energy, and the environment; transforming Social Security into personal savings accounts; overhauling the civil justice system to reduce the burden of lawsuits; and updating the federal government, including the privatization of some functions, so that it moves at the speed and effectiveness of the information age. And that's just the beginning. He also calls for tripling the size of America's intelligence community, reforming its election system, developing a more intelligent health care system that creates jobs and increases quality of life, and balancing the federal budget.

Gingrich believes that this ambitious agenda can be accomplished, but only if it receives grassroots support. The entrenched political system, with its lobbyists, bloated bureaucracies, and the complicity of the media, is too self-serving to fix itself, he stresses. Concise and clearly presented, Winning the Future is long on specifics and short on rhetoric, and it succeeds as a springboard for political discourse. Gingrich's aim is clearly to inspire citizens to take responsibility for the county's direction by demanding more of their government and their leaders. --Shawn Carkonen

                                  Book Description

America's future in the twenty-first century, argues Newt Gingrich, will be determined by the decisions we make now. His book is a grass roots call to action--and will set the debate for the new administration and Congress.

5 out of 5 stars Newt Does it Again- Good Book- America= The Greatest Land on Earth.......2007-09-26

This book like other titles from this author, along with Bill O'Reilly, Bill Benet, Lou Dobbs, and Bernard Goldberg (and many others) are among some of the best written modern political volumes touching to the heart and soul of the greatest land on the face of the Earth.

Newt's ideas on numerous modern issues facing American society are positive ones I hope our population, and leaders will consider.

Newt, like myself, endorses a strong military to defend this country from Al-Qaeda and other thugs, a vibrant economy which employs people and sees businesses grow, low taxation, smaller government, tough stances against violent and corporate crime, and promotion of moral Christian traditional values in our culture.

This land is what ever we the people make it, and in my opinion this is indeed the greatest nation ever conceived by man.

Good book, worth your time and money.

                                  5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2007-08-09

Newt tells it like it is and how it neds to be fixed. The followers of a desert nomad who claimed to be a prophet have resumed their seventh century jihad for world domination and need to be stopped. Terrorists are in the US here and now. Our borders are a sieve. Congress is non functional, only concerned with staying in power and enriching themselves. Social Security is badly broken and get worse with multitudes of Illegal Aliens flooding in. The judicial branch of government which is supposed to be equal to the other two branches continues to usurp the authority of the President and Congress. Newt has the answers we need!

This book should be required reading for every high school senior and every college junior in the nation whether they agree with the author or not the seed needs to be planted. Most of his ideas will not be implemented in the next 8 year cycle but maybe the younger generation will take up the torch in 2016. If they don't this great nation will become just another third world socialist paradise that mother Russia never quite achieved.
