This book covers so many types of paintings from traditional to some abstracts. The examples are well done and very helpful. Might be a bit too involved for a new artist to understand. Lots of information.

This is a terrific book. Not only is it beautiful and inspiring, it contains alot of information about how to use color in watercolor painting. The material is presented in a very clear and understandable way. I would highly recommend it to anyone interested is learning about how to use color in watercolor painting.

This book is a jewel. After spending a lot of time with the David Dewey book The Watercolor Book: Materials and Techniques for Today's Artists, and doing a lot of watercolor "experiments", I was ready for more advanced concepts. Jeanne Dobie does not waste your time with the review of the basic skills. Instead, she refines and perfects your understanding of watercolors. A world opened up for me as I studied the chapter titled, "Mouse Power". Other gems include explanations of how to mix luminous darks and maintain sparkling whites. Jeanne Dobie inspires you towards higher levels learning. This is not a book for beginners, but for those looking to advance their basic skills. I highly recommend this book!!

Okay book, but..........2007-06-13

The book cover is misleading. It gives the impression that this book is geared towards painting wet on wet. But its really a mixture of wet on wet and painting positive/negative. Which is okay if that's your style of painting. I think the artist is very talented, however, the biggest flaw for anyone is to make assumptions. I agree with Nigel (Austin)...What's with the 5 stars !!!

Receiving this book promptly in the mail made it seem like Christmas Day. I am absorbing the materials in great gulps and already my painting has improved. Thank you Jeane Dobie.

My funny bone hurts.......2002-10-23

There is no doubt that humans are the funniest animals on the planet, and appropos of the medical theme of this humorous book, I thought I would make one comment in that vein.

Yes, we humans are pretty funny creatures, but what would you expect of a mammal that actually has a "funny bone?" I'm referring to the upper-arm bone, which is actually named the "humerus." Well, it's actually spelled a little differently, but only by a couple of letters, and that's probably because anatomists didn't usually win first place in their spelling bees in school.

Well, I don't know if the hip bone is connected to the thigh bone myself, but I did learn how to spell way back when. Anyway, this book is sure to tickle the humerus or funny bone in all of us, and it just goes to show you that although seriousness may be only skin-deep, funny is truly to the bone.

The true medicine is humour.......2001-09-14

As a medical student I really enjoyed reading this book. I've read other books and articles of Bennet, and enjoy his humorous way of putting things. Asa foreigner I had a few difficulties enjoying all of the jokes related to US health services. However, all in all I found the book worthwhile reading, and I had some really big laughs that cramped my stomach. I am sure I am going to read and reread this book in the future.....after all, good humour and hilarious jokes are the best medicine ever invented, and there are no sideeffects!!!

This is one of the funniest books I've ever read. Dr. Bennett did a terrific job pulling together both classic and original quotes about doctors and medicine. Enjoy the material when you have some free time during the day or comb through the collection looking for amusing lines to use on rounds, lectures, or other medical situations. Book of semi-historical signifance. Normal everyday reader will find book boring and "long" winded. Good primary sources but not a book with a "bite." No new information given to change this person's mind about the Victorian Era in England. Bailey's thesis is lost in the mire of words.

There are many great books that tell the history of Germany during World War II and the fall of Berlin, but there are few that provide the history from the perspective by someone that actually lived through this event. Dorothea Von Schwanenfluegel Lawson provides a wonderfully detailed narrative of what it was like to be an ordinary German citizen and live through extraordinary times. She will take you from post World War I to Berlin and the rise of the Third Reich, through World War II, the Battle of Berlin and the Cold War that followed. The reader will be treated to a well written and riveting personal biography against well documented historical events. These histories told by individuals that actually lived it are rare and offer an exceptional insight to the most dramatic period of 20th century world history. Ms. Von Schwanenfluegel Lawson only enhances the history and gives the reader a real glimpse of how ordinary citizens lived, endured and survived during this period. The reader will see and experience another side, a very human side, of what it was like to be in Germany and survive to share this story. An Historical Legacy.......2005-07-30

LAUGHTER ISN'T RATIONED is a glimpse of life in Germany between the two Wars as well as during World War II. Few have written first-person accounts in English from such a perspective. The author, now 89 years old, is to be commended for the monumental task of writing her five-hundred page memoirs. She leaves an historical legacy that will help future generations better understand that era.

Why the Nazis Got Control - WARNING! WARNING!!.......2005-07-22

I'm sorry; i got 230 ages into this book before the lies got to me. From the claim that Charlemagne was "a German emperor" [Hello? If he was *German* he'd be known as 'Karl der Grüße'] to the silly claim that "the Britons invaded Norway" [i almost expected a nonsensical claim aout the 'great Norse hero Vikdung Quisling'], the lady surely proves why the Nazis took over Germany. There are too many falsehoods listed as truth [i counted 6 on 1 page], too many misconceptions listed as fact, too much muddled thinking [if it *is* thinking] put down as clear vision.

I have two reasons for knowing this: i'm a packrat who collects facts. & i have a Mother who firmly believes that "if you ignore ugliness, it wil go away". Some ugliness is too deeply ingrained, & the Nazi regime was one huge hideous stain on the 20th century. Dorothea lived thru the worst of it, & exhibited the same blinkered vision: she ignored the Nazis, defied them in tiny ways no1 else could've used, & thinks that absolves her from the Nazi evil. But sometimes, all Evil needs to succeed is for the good to be silent; & Dorothea makes it clear she was one of many who were silent when they should have screamed...

A look inside the Third Reich and the German mind.......2005-03-07

This book contains a fascinating account of one woman's childhood and young adulthood as the Weimar Republic became Nazi Germany. It also contains a harrowing account of her years during and after the war. What I found particularly fascinating, which many memoirs of WWII leave out, is how difficult the peace was for the average German. The intelligence, bravery and pluck of Mrs. Lawson during this whole period are amazing.

But Mrs. Lawson has another agenda - defending her people. She rightly asserts that a majority of Germans did not initially support Hitler and that number only grew. She also points out the not-so-heroic actions of the Allies during and after the war (e.g. the bombing of Dresden, "denazification", etc.). These are stories that must be told.

However, she undermines her case again and again with unsubstantiated events (e.g. Nazi's captured top secret French and British plans to invade the Soviet Union), "facts" which are easily proven false (e.g. Eisenhower purposely starved 1M German GI POW's to death) and, most surprisingly, outright Nazi propaganda (e.g. Germany invaded Norway only after the British started to). Occasionally, she just sounds like the spoiled child ( "The WWII bombing of Munster resulted in the loss of [her father's] apartment building for which no compensation was given" she sniffs. Umm - not to diminish your loss but a) you own intact real estate in West Berlin as well as farm land in rural Germany, b) OK - we'll compensate you, now you compensate Poland, Czechoslovakia, France . . . and c) two words - Marshall. Plan. )

If you're looking for details about the Holocaust, forget it. She devotes two sentences to that, but plenty of words to "atrocities" committed by Poles and Czechs against German troops (with, naturally, no mention of what German troops might possibly have done to raise their ire).

What is clear in her defense of Germans are the attitudes of the average middle to upper-middle class German in the 1930's and 40's. While this might be off-putting from an historical accuracy perspective, I found it completely fascinating.

This book provides a chilling account of traditional race relations in the United States, and also forces the reader to confront the problems with many of the proposed modern solutions. I recommend this book to anyone who has ever grappled with the issue of race in this country--even if one does not agree with all of Bell's analysis, the level of thought provoking questions and challenges are outstanding!
