Something everyone would find interesting.......2007-08-06
I teach high school freshmen, and I keep this book on my shelf for students to look through on their own time. It is easily one of the most popular books, and after only three years the wear is beginning to prove this. I don't know how many times I have dropped it off at a student's table because they were bored, and dared them to not find something interesting in the book. Without fail, a students will be engrossed in the book within minutes.
One of the best features about this book compared to other books of its kind is that it contains dozens of examples of dozens of various types of art. Beyond the typical optical illusions, it features trompe d'loeil murals, artwork created with hair or chocolate syrup, artwork that can only be viewed with a reflective cylinder, and much more. As I mentioned before, nearly everyone will find something fascinating in this book.

For anyone with eyes, I recommend this book. I purchased for my girlfriend and she loved it. Dali and Echer are particular noteworthy in this collection of illusioins. It will renew your sense of wonder about how your brain works.

Wow - I chose this based on the chorus of 5 star reviews, submitted by others who seem much more knowledgeable in this field than I, and I am NOT disappointed! This is a great looking book - big, hardcover, suitable for your coffee table. As stated in other reviews, the book has a nice sampling of well known artists, plus an array of fun illusions, and EXPLANATIONS, which is something I had not seen in other books of illusions. This is just a very nice book, meeting the hype, and worthy of your coffee table or anybody else's for that matter .. definitely gift-worthy.
Fascinating imagery.......2007-01-19
Overall this is a fascinating book, interesting to read and fun to look through the pictures. My only complaint is with a few of the images which are too small to appreciate. 2 x 4 inches is not sufficient to enjoy Escher's detailed graphics, and I found myself using a magnifying glass at times. Thankfully this is the exception, and many images are almost full-page size. Even if you know nothing about art, this is an enjoyable book, because you will find yourself amazed by the clever images.
Wonderful family book.......2007-01-16
I purchased this book for my teenage son for Christmas. It was a big hit with everyone in the family, and with our friends who stopped by that day. And even after the holidays, I saw my son (an avid video gamer who refuses to read books) pick it up several times, and even share it with a friend.
The information about the different artists is fascinating, and the artwork is fun, inspiring and amazing.

Book reviews usually focus on the contents of the book. In this case, I think knowing more about the author is more helpful. Barry Jones is a latter-day Benjamin Franklin, with a better memory. Barry Jones has an amazing brain for remembering facts. In the early 60's, he became the greatest quizmaster in the world, starting by making a name for himself on Bob Dyer's Pick-a-box, and then taking on international competition. His knowledge base is global. Back then, quizzes were good radio (and television), and Barry has corrected the Encyclopedia Brittanica twice in competition, giving both the Britannica answer and the better scientific explanation. These powers of memory are combined with one of the most acute and clear-thinking minds in the world, which is why he is regarded in Australia as a national treasure. His conclusions are not always popular, and when he first published Sleepers, Wake! in 1982, they upset many people, particularly politicians who knew very little of technology and change. Which is how he finished up in politics, playing an important role. If you like books written by thinking and gentle men who have been elevated to high office on pure talent and good will, and are interested in the economic future of the industrial world, then this book is an enlightenment. And no, I don't agree with all his conclusions, but his analysis is beyond reproach!

This book discusses the links between technological change and employment levels in developed countries, with an emphasis on Australia. Barry Jones introduces a five-part economic analysis to assist analysis of employment levels, as well as a good analysis of historical impacts of technology. The book also delves into the question of what we will do when the need to work declines as technology displaces more workers. Written in a very erudite style, with thorough referencing. A book everyone should read if they are at all concerned about having to work for a living. Now available in a 4th edition, which you should look at for the latest data.
Future directions for information based economies.......1997-07-05
Barry Jones's thesis about revolutionary changes in the labour force, Sleepers, Wake! was originally published in 1982 and is now in its fourth edition. Jones explores the impact and future implications of the Information technology revolution on the labour market and society in general. This book is well written by the instructor. It explains all the aspects of the German Anglo and Italian Mediterranean Cycles. Dr. Zophy has gone through a lot of trouble to make this book a readable guide for first-time students of Renaissance history. It follows a clear outline and is followed by a short list of dates at the end of each chapter. Visual aids also abound in the book with several paintings and examples of art from different periods. However, there are some problems in the actual references. Also, there is a problem with the priority of some topics, which favor women who made little difference while leaving out more important religious figures in history.
Could clearly be better!.......1999-05-13
Zophy has put together in one volume the essence of two earlier volumes, and unfortunately omits imporant information in doing so. He is fairly clear, and does well in treating the main issues and people of the era, but omits many important people (like Savonarola). Also, the index has a lot of false references! Nevertheless, it is a handy a helpful guide to this historical era; the chronological charts at the end of each chapter are very helpful.
Zophy Distills the Essence of the Renaissance and Reformatio.......1998-01-15
I had the pleasure of being in Dr. Zophy's Renaissance History Graduate Seminar during the time that he was writing this book. This gave me the opportunity to see the book in its prepublished state. Despite these prejudices in favor of the book, I can honestly say that Dr. Zophy's history of the Renaissance is the most readable and accessable overview of that period that I have found. His scholarship is above reproach and the organization of the book only serves to enhance its authority. Because Dr. Zophy is an excellent teacher, his focus in Dances Over Fire and Water is instructional. The addition of timelines and annotated bibliographies at the end of each chapter not only aid students in organizing the events of the Renaissance and Reformation, but provide a jumping off point for independent research. While Zophy covers the expected topics in Renaissance and Reformation history, he places special emphasis on the role of women in the arts and politics. The inclusion of women's history topics in a general text should help dispell the notion that women's history can somehow be separated from the history of western civilization and therefor trivialized. Zophy's excellent writing, sense of humor, and scholarship should make Dances Over Fire and Water a standard in graduate and undergraduate classes for years to come.

Although this book discusses in depth,the effects of history,it is definately not for the average student! This study of world history goes above and beyond any average way of learning. If you are prepared for a challenge, then get ready to experience what will probably become the most fulfilling time of your life!

This textbook is a wonderful resource for anyone in a college level or AP world history class. Stemming from over 5000bce to 2000ce, this book covers most major historical events in stunning detail. The pictures and historical accounts are excellent parallels to the information contained in the text.
I highly recommend this textbook, it is a must for anyone studying world history in detail!
