A grim reminder of the 'other' atomic bomb city.......2003-05-23

This compilation presents an extensive photographic record of the immediate aftermath of the bombing of Nagasaki with accompanying text. Published on the 50th anniversary of the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, it shows the horrendous aftermath of the bombing through reprints of digitally restored negatives from pictures taken just a few days after the critical juncture in history. The photos are accompanied by bilingual text in Japanese and English, including an interview with the photographer, a work of fiction, and extensive biographical and chronological materials. The graphic contents may not be suitable for certain readers.

Filled with talented pet photographer Kim Levin's shots of dogs in Dublin and Dingle Bay, this little book is as charming as the country in which it was created. Each photo is accompanied by a dog-specific version of an Irish blessing--you won't find "may the wind be always at your back," but rather "may your coat stay shiny, your nose stay cold, and the sidewalk stay soft." As Levin and coauthor (and husband) John O'Neill write in the forward, Ireland is full of dogs on the loose, all slightly wet, slightly wild, and entirely adorable. Most of the shots are of a single mongrel, rather damp and scruffy, but full of personality. The matching of blessings with the photo is as entertaining as the picture itself. One particularly whimsical shot shows a very resigned-looking terrier in what appears to be a fur-trimmed cloak and matching tunic. His saying reads, "let us forever bless the witty soul who invented dog clothing." Another of the book's many sayings is one that many young Irish women would whole-heartedly agree with: "may the next person who calls you "lassie" get fleas." I laughed out loud or got misty-eyed (sometimes simultaneously) at the photos and captions in this book. The photographer has captured the essence of doggy expression. One of my favorites (and there are many) is the tilted head and "I'm listening" look of the dog for whom it is wished, "May you always understand what is being said to you." This book is a lovely gift for yourself or any dog people you know.

I have seen this book and being a dog lover, I really enjoyed it. Some of the captions for the pictures made me laugh out loud. I saw an interview with the authors and the said that The dog we call an Irish Setter her in the US, is called a Red Setter in Ireland. The Pictures are great and the captions are even better.

Bud's mom warns him that the new dog must prove himself before he has her permission to remain on the farm. "If he chases the cows and scares the chickens, he can't be a farm dog." His black and white coloring let him blend in perfectly with the other black and white animals, and since he does not cause a disturbance, he is allowed to stay. The colorful, realistic illustrations depict gentle farm life scenes.

Low-skilled workers face a future of joblessness or low-wage, insecure employment as technological change and globalization impact on the advanced economies. 'The European social model' of collective bargaining, minimum wages, employment rights, and social welfare support is alternately cited as both cause and cure. The contributions to this book review the evidence and find that, while the European model cannot remedy adverse global trends affecting low-skilled workers, it does achieve significant success in moderating them. Collective bargaining and wage regulation reduce the incidence of low pay. Minimum wages at prevailing levels provide significant wage protection for more vulnerable workers, without substantial job losses. The significant 'jobs deficit' of Germany relative to the USA in low-wage services is not the outcome of excessively high German wages. Conversely, reliance on wage flexibility to create jobs for the low-skilled does not emerge as economically effective, and can no longer be regarded as the simple panacea.

Famous crafts appear along with nearly unknown ones to display fighters, bombers, trainers and more, with black and white photos accompany rich history on each aircraft type. A 'must' for the in-depth military, aviation or specialty naval library.

Covers the classics and the unknown.......2004-12-12

This book covers 30 aircraft that the U.S. Navy and Marines have used nad the 31st if you include the Spruce Goose, which was funded in part by the Navy. Some of the aircraft covered like the carrier version of the P-80 Shooting Star were kind of unexpected. Of course the old standbys of World War II are included: Wildcat, Corsair, Dauntless, Avenger. Strangely missing is the Hellcat, but this is a minor thing.

Some of the unepected aircraft include the PB4Y Privateer, the Navy's version of the B-24. Another is the Martin P6M Seamaster, the jet powered flying boat that worked quite well but got cancelled to provide money for the Polaris sub project. Another is the Pitcairn OP-1, the first rotary-wing aircraft used by the Navy. It wasn't a helecopter but an Autogyro. This is the first time that I've lot of this information.

Along with the descriptions of the planes, there is quite a bit of well researched information about each plane. This might include the various versions that were put into production, comments from a pilot, some of the history of the plane or other tidbits of information.

The book is based on the column - Historic Aircraft - that appeared in the U.S. Naval Institute's magazine "Naval History" from 1997 to 2002.
