Intended for the first time owner of a digital camera........2004-03-20

This is the perfect book for the first time owner of a digital camera. The author explains basic terminology and how pixels and resolution effect the photographs, and guides the reader through how to transfer, edit, process and archive the photos.

It is not a guide on how to take photos, nor is it highly technical. It is designed for the first time user answering many of the questions and easing the confusion felt when entering the digital world. I am buying it for my sister-in-law and my 75 year old father, who both recently purchased cameras and are struggling with the understanding what resolution to use, how to print the photos, etc.

I wish I had this book years ago when I purchased my first digital camera.

A Book for Author's Friends Only.......2004-01-16

I'm afraid I for one cannot figure out the purpose of this book. It reads like something the writer should have simply photocopied and passed out among her friends. It is neither a very knowledgeable digital photography book, nor an amusing account of the author's introduction to digital cameras. (Shenton's illustrations are quite funny, however!)Lessing's description of memory fails to even mention SD or MM cards. Her description of photo software just covers her opinion of the few she has used. She's a Sony user who states there are no really good HP or Kodak digital cameras; although she admits her opinion there might become outdated, which it certainly has. Actually, the whole book is outdated, even though it was just published in 2003, and just hit my local library as a "new" book.Take my advice, which is no worse than the author's advice--take the money you would spend buying this book, and instead get a year's subscription to PC Photo magazine.PC Photo will give you the latest information on digital cameras, memory, scanners, printers and software...and will give you much, much more knowledgeable, as well as easy to understand, advice about picture taking, storage, editing and burning.

Very disappointing.......2006-08-18

I must agree with Jung's review, and only wish I had seen it before ordering.
There are very few classic "typos" in the book but many sentences do not make rational sense, as though they were constructed of phrases from other sentences that almost make a complete sentence but do not necessarily make sense.

Several of the photo cutlines are incorrect, and their sense of linear time is, in several cases, greatly flawed. For one example, they suggest that the Pfalz DIIIa came out AFTER the Pfalz DXII, and was the last production model of the company during the war. The section called "Albatros Fighters" begins with 9 pages on Albatros 2 seaters (none of which were 2 seater fighters), and the Albatros D VII write-up says the plane was started because the Albatros DV was "superseded by the Fokker D.III."

It is one thing for a book like this to be edited by someone with no knowledge of the period (as the last point demonstrates) but I cannot invent a reason for the bad sentence structures-- even "ESL" writers should do better than this.

This is ne of the most disappointing books I've ever purchased and my only "joy" is that I chose to NOT buy both of the volumes at the same time--which I nearly did.

I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone, nor would I buy another in this series. The text is filled with grammatical and typographical errors, and contains very little useful information. The photographs are adequate at best, while the color plates are very poor. You would be far better served buying one of the Osprey series books.
