Customer Reviews:
Why artists should care about computers.......2007-03-12
This book is not just about painting, although painting is probably the most visible and best example of the world James Faure Walker explores: a world where all too often traditional artists, confronted by new technologies, either embrace the new completely or shun it totally. Faure Walker admits he fell in love with computers, but he understands the criticism from the more reactionary camp and this book goes a long way to creating a much-needed dialogue between the two opinions.
I will not repeat what other reviewers have said (Meryl Evans' review on this page is a particularly good summary), but I will try to add a personal opinion. This is not about a journey "From Traditional to Digital Painting". This book is about finding a place between the two where the artist can be happy, and hopefully this book will also help carve them out a niche in which they can be accepted for doing what they love. It is also a call to artists everywhere to push the boundaries, to stop creating second-rate digital art and finally do something extraordinary with it.
As a student of animation I've read a great deal about computer graphics and their relation to art, but this book is the best I've found. Faure Walker comprehensively grapples with the question of why digital or analogue matters artistically, and his conclusions are important to both artists and digital developers. If you have ever tried to wrap your head around any kind of digital art, if you care about where painting is going, you owe it to yourself to read this book.
An artists' journey from traditional to digital painting.......2006-04-14
James Faure Walker's PAINTING THE DIGITAL RIVER is also a top pick for art libraries, coming from an artist's viewpoint and exploring James walker's personal journey from traditional to digital painting. Walker learned to paint with the computer only after overcoming software problems and misunderstandings: he's now both an artist and a computer enthusiast and here provides both a memoir of his transition to the digital realm and back and a survey of tools, models, and designs. His outstanding coverage will appeal to both artists and computer users who would blend art with digital processing.
A look at digital art as compared to traditional art.......2006-02-06
Painting the Digital River takes a view of art by comparing digital art and classic art. Author James Faure Walker makes many points as he gives value to both art forms, discarding neither as less legitimate than the other. Himself an artist, Walker knows that many artists are confused as to what it means to be an artist and expert at what they do. He says that artists must know about painting, its past and its present, and possess some knowledge of the digital form.
Walker discusses the classical way of learning to draw and paint, and then looks at the tools available for artists today. Just as canvas, brush and pigment all come in many qualities; the digital world offers a variety of hardware and software to enhance the finished product of the artist's vision.
He describes a variety of activities illustrating different forms of digital art and tries to answer many of the questions faced by artists of today, lovers of art, and the museums and galleries that display the new art forms. The author covers some of the work - both classical and modern that he has viewed - finding some of it a waste of time and others breathtaking.
Where the author finally reconciles the different forms of art is in the mind of the painter, the inspiration, the idea from which his work flows. Whether with brush on canvas or printmaking using computer graphics, the painter's talent most affects the quality of the art. Still, he adds, "that for all its faults, digital art has a life of its own."
This book starts and ends with the metaphor of the river (Walker works overlooking the Thames); the river changes, it flows this way and that. Painting, like the river, follows a winding course and has quirky ways.
This book is timely as many people are confused by all of the digital art and are trying to put it in perspective - is it art? Is it the only art (from now on)? The author tries to sort out and help understand what painting is and that there is good and bad art in the new digital world just as there always has been with ink and paint. He does a good job reviewing art history and providing technical insight. Painters, art historians, those who appreciate what they see, as well as those interested in the technology that produces digital paintings should find the book worth exploring.

Okay for ideas and lessons.......2007-07-18
I rate this higher than the previous reviewers because it fills a niche. It isn't a 12 page basic, how to use watercolor pencils booklet that comes with a starter kit. It also isn't a book that expects you to want to spend hours on a painting and only has examples for folks that can already draw and paint like pros. So, I suggest it as a mid-step on a beginner's route to the art.
I do agree that the magenta is not a good color choice for the shadows, but each artist to their own taste. Suggestion: get a decent (or almost any) watercolor instruction book that includes shadows. There are much better and easy ways to mix VERY good and realistic shadows that will make your artwork look professional. The magenta detracts from the art in this book.
Again, a good step between how to get pencil on paper and wet it in 12 basic steps - and how to do experienced art.
Also, keep in mind that this book is not to show how to spend hours drawing, layering, blending, and reworking to end up with a realistic picture of nature. It is a way to make a sketchbook study in the field that you can then use back in the studio.
PS. I'm a watercolorist, so my interest in watercolor pencils is not to sell the medium as artwork, but to get journal sketches down quickly and on the run in order to capture ideas. So, I think the book works JUST FINE for that.
Over-promises and Under-delivers.......2007-05-10
Nothing quite fills me with ire much more than putting down some money for an art instruction book, and then I find out that it's a dud. Such was the case with British author Charles Evans' book, Quick & Clever Watercolor Pencils.
I had spotted it in a catalog offering from an art book publisher, and decided, why not? I've been experimenting with the use of watercolour pencils for more than a decade now, and it's a medium that I like and enjoy. I enjoy using it because it's a very portable means of sketching -- all I really need a pad of paper that will handle getting wet, a bundle of pencils and brushes, and something to put fresh water in. A paper cup is good for that.
As with most art books, this one follows the standard format -- an introduction by the artist, chapters on tools and techniques, materials, and the various ways to use the pencils and brushes to create washes, details, mixing colours and suchlike. The majority of the book is taken up by the projects that progress from fairly easy to progressively harder. Finally, there is an index.
Each project has some new technique to offer. The earliest paintings are not much more than scribbling with a wash or damp brush run over it. Sometimes a waterproof marker is added to create some definition or a seabird trundling about.
Now for the complaints about this book. Rarely does Evans let you see the work as a whole while it is in process. Instead, he just makes a close up on the pencil or brush or fingertip smudging away, and it makes it very difficult to get an idea of just where you're at in the painting. Too, there's a real lack of information in the chapters -- he blithely assumes that you already know what he's doing and how he got there without telling just how he did it. Now, I'm not asking for him to take me by the hand, but a little direction would have certainly helped.
My biggest complaint is that he also assumes that you know what pencils and tools you're going to be needing for each project. Instead, he just tacks it on somewhere in the caption, and the poor artist is left to scramble about in the toolbox looking for the elusive item. By the time you find it, the damp area has dried, and now either the picture is ruined or you have to rewet everything. It slows the work down, and tends to kill any enthusiasm that the artist had to start the project in the first place.
The colour choices that Evans makes are strange to say the least. Magenta occurs regularly, especially in one glaring example of a bridge, or in the shadows cast by trees. So too does manganese blue, a brilliant, chemical sort of blue that doesn't occur much in nature. Most of his style involves scribbling, but then he doesn't give any indication as to how much force or lightness is to be used either -- it's another fast way to wreck a project.
Finally, the author's tone in his writing and instructions is annoying. It's patronizing, with a smug I know it all, and you better be grateful, you slag smarminess to him. By the time I was halfway through the book, I was ready to smack him.
Summing up, while I do recommend this medium, this is not the book to find instruction in how to use it. Evans' smart-aleck attitude, tiny examples, and lack of skill at teaching shows from beginning to end, and this is not a book that I would recommend to anyone. My suggestion is to find some student grade paper, a tin of Derwent watercolour pencils, and some time to play and experiment on your own. You'll get more satisfaction that way.
One and one half stars at best, and I'm being generous with that.
Not Recommended.
cannot recommend quick and clever pencils .......2006-05-24
this book initially looks interesting - nice cover and it has projects throughout and tips too, sadly the projects are poorly thought out and the tips are very poor. the book has nothing to offer, poor instruction and overall it won't help anyone not ever the most clueless beginner ! it would be hard to recommend this book to anyone.

Customer Reviews:
The author says:.......2004-08-18
This little book was originally written by the man who 'discovered' U2, Irish music journalist Bill Graham. Bill sadly passed away in '96.
The current 2004 edition was updated by the editor of U2log.com and current author of U2 Live: A Concert Documentary. Which would be me.
I've been into the band since 1984 and was lucky enough to meet Bill Graham on various occasions, in particular when I was doing research for my book 'Gavin Friday - The Light and Dark'.
I recommend this book to the casual U2 fan or anyone who would like to have an overview of U2 music available to them.
Longtime fans may want to get this book to just have at least some of Bill Graham's great work in their collection, or to see what the editor of U2log.com gets up to when she's not writing leads and headlines for the site.
BUY FOR THE PICTURES.......1999-02-12
THE PICTURES WERE REALLY GOOD IF YOU LIKE HAVING PICTURES OF U2. THE WRITING DID DESCRIBE A LITTLE ABOUT THE MEANINGS BEHIND THE SONGS BUT NOT REALLY, IT WAS MORE OR LESS THE AUTHORS THOUGHTS. SOME OF THE SONGS HE TRASHED, I LOVED.
Heck no.......1998-04-15
If you want to read one persons attempt to review the U2 anthology, buy this book. If you want to make up your own mind, listen to the music yourself.
This book is little more than Graham spewing on about each of the songs, trying to fit in as many big words as possible along the way. Dissapointing to say the least.

Book Description
Wisdom from the book of Proverbs to teach parents how to instill in children the morals and values they need to navigate through a world obsessed with money, sex, and power.
Book Description
Deadly Fighting Skills of the World is the most in-depth study yet of how trained soldiers kill and wound, and a complete insight into how human beings can be turned into deadly fighting machines. These skills can be primitive as well as ultramodern. Far Eastern elite troops train in the historic martial arts: the South Korean Tiger Division is expert in the lethal skills of punching and kicking. Western special forces can fight with their hands, using them to defeat heavily armed assailants, and can kill without a sound. They can improvise weapons from materials at hand. But they also have access to the most sophisticated weaponry: hand-held anti-tank guns which can transform a tank into a blazing hulk. They know the latest techniques of ambush, how to assassinate heavily guarded political opponents, and how to rapidly destroy key installations. All the above and much more is in this exceptionally interesting book, made more graphic by 100 diagrams and 80 photographs.

Deadly Fighting Skills of the World.......2006-02-26
This book is very informative and thorough. It is an excellent buy!!
Great Advanced Soldiering book!.......2005-01-28
This book is excellent information for any soldier. Although the title is misleading. The book talks about special forces around the world and their fighting skills. I found some good information even though I am a fully qualified soldier. I saw a few reviews that said it was a bad book if you were looking for "fighting skills" as in street fighting. The fact of the matter is the whole book is on fighting. Fighting wars and Battle skills that is. If a person is looking for a unarmed combat system I suggest Systema. For more info. go to www.russianmartialart.com
Good Reference Manual.......2002-01-23
I thought this book was very informative. I also have The Elite Forces Handbook of Unarmedcombat, and I think they are both very good field manuals for soldiers.
The tactics in this book may be a bit dated - but let us not forget that tactics change with counter-tactics so the latest stuff will not get published for another 10 years simply because it is classified.
However, this material is still highly educational and I would recommend it.
Another special forces manual?.......2000-07-21
In a way, yes it is, but it is written as if the reader is actually training to be in an elite forces unit and is being briefed. I like this method of writing as it makes the text more of an adventure rather than an enciclopedia. There is a huge amount of information in this book, just about everything you would want to know from basic martial arts, self defence, tracking, sniping, automatic weapons, ambushes booby traps etc. The text is fairly self explanatory most of the time but is is jazzed up with pictures and diagrams. Admittidly the pictures are black and white, but you cant have everything. When it says 'Skills Of the World' it means the entrie world. There are references in here to not only SAS, SBS, SEALs, SWATs, and Spetnaz, there is also references to french elite regiments, Israili, Vietnamise, German and Brazilian too. What I like about this book is the way in which every little tecnique is described then illustrated with pictures finally descibed in action, for example there is reference to heavy machine guns used in Viatnam and knife throwing used in Afganistan by spetnaz. I cant give this book 5 stars because it dosen't bring much innovation to the writing of these sorts of manuals. It is the same tried and tested formula over again but it is good.
high color cover/low color information.......2000-07-02
nice looking cover, but very low in any type of information. many drawings that are not related to the title. just the very basic information at best. i would not recommend

The world is a mess. Iraq is becoming another Vietnam. Iran and North Korea are trying to get nukes or may already have them. Al Qaeda is still on the loose. In the middle of this turmoil, Tom Barnett believes America stands at a threshold. It can withdraw into itself. Or it can seize an opportunity to forge the most peaceful period in human history, where war becomes unknown. Barnett is a former professor at the U.S. Naval War College and senior advisor to the Office of the Secretary of Defense. He has been called "one of the most important strategic thinkers of our time."
Barnett maps out a sweeping new vision for the U.S. military in Blueprint for Action, the sequel to his influential previous book The Pentagon's New Map. He says the U.S. military has a massive doctrinal flaw. It has an unrivalled power to win wars. But it has little ability to win the peace. Witness Iraq, where virtually no thought was given to postwar stabilization and reconstruction. He advocates creating a new Department of Global Security in the U.S. government, tasked with putting countries back on their feet after an armed intervention by U.S. forces. He says the new department would also work to reduce economic and social instability in "disconnected" regions of the developing world. "It all starts with America and yes, it all starts with security," he writes. Barnett's vision is highly U.S.-centric and recalls the "white man's burden" philosophy of British colonial authorities. He advocates "regime change" in North Korea and Venezuela. And his solutions for the problems of the Third World are straight out of a banker's mouth: privatization, deregulation, globalization. But Blueprint for Action is an important account of the current thinking and debates at the highest levels of the Pentagon. --Alex Roslin
Book Description
The strategically crucial sequel to the New York Times bestseller.
The Pentagon's New Map was one of the most talked-about books of the year-a fundamental reexamination of war and peace in the post-9/11 world that provided a compelling vision of the future. Now, senior advisor and military analyst Thomas P.M. Barnett explores our possible long-and short-term relations with such nations and regions as Iran, Iraq, and the Middle East, China and North Korea, Latin America and Africa, while outlining the strategies to pursue, the entities to create, and the pitfalls to overcome. Barnett's new book is something more-a powerful road map through a chaotic and uncertain world to "a future worth creating."

Utter Madness.......2007-08-11
I ran into trouble on page 2 of this book when I was already tired of tripping over the author's ego. I picked this book up for 5.99 and I'm guessing the author is already thoroughly and rightfully discredited. The author promotes fascism (of the classical kind) to a degree comparable to Hilter's National Socialism - even despite that much overused metaphor.
The author's main point is that "might makes right". It has never worked before and it won't work now. It is contrary to the American Perspective and well, the Constitution. The people won't stand for seeing their sons and daughters spill their blood for the CEOs and Chickenhawks who have never seen combat and don't know a thing about it.
If adopted, this plan would lead to not only the destruction of the American way of life, but our country's existence. It should rightfully be consigned to the trash heap of history!
The first book was better........2007-02-15
I read this thinking it was a follow on to his first book. It really isn't. Its more meadering thoughts and projections about possible scenarios. OK reading, but not something I'd read again or recommend.
blueprint for disaster.......2007-02-15
I tried to go into this book with an open mind, but I came out thinking that Barnett simply doesn't understand the world or its problems. He is like the armchair quarterback who thinks he can win the super bowl even though he never really played or understood the game.
Barnett suggests, for example, a policy of total appeasment of China. All US strategic interests in the region are to be surrendered so the US can focus on fighting more wars like Iraq. Taiwan is to be sold out and given to China to make them "happy". Even thought China is a communist dictatorship, Barnett sees it as the great friend and partner of the united states. All the US needs to do is to stop opposing China's legitmate interest....and sell out every friend we have in East Asia...and we can fight more wars like Iraq to bring civilization to third-world garbage pits. Like certain people in the government, Barnett is willing to destroy the entire global strategic position of the united states to bring "democracy" to places like Iraq.
In the case of Iran, its even worse. The solution to all of our problems with the leadership in Iran will apparently be solved if they love Israel more. So we should launch a diplomatic initiative to beg Iran to love Israel more for which America will surrender to all Iran's regional objectives including nuclear weapons and domination of the Persian Gulf. As with China, what he is promoting is a policy of appeasement so the US can apparently have more resources to fight more iraq-like wars.
So what does America get in exchange for appeasing its strategic rivals in the world? Barnett wants the US go to war to oppose "socialism" in Venezuala and wherever else it appears. Somehow in Barnett's mind, China is not a threat or a rival to the US, neither is a nuclear armed Iran....but a third-rate nobody like Venezuala is a mortal threat to America that requires armed intervention, the overthrow of the government and thousands of Americans to teach them how to be free. Barnett is also in favor of "women's rights" in muslim as a cynical mechanism to be used to justify political intervention in muslim countries. Its not that Barnett cares about women. Their rights matter far less to him than using their rights as a means of forcing American-style secularization into the middle east. I might have called it original but for the fact that many neo-cons who have utter contempt for feminism have been promoting similar ideas for years.
As in the pentagon's new map - his previous book - Barnett wants to see America as the New Jerusalem leading the world. The only thing wrong with America in his thinking is that we need to be more up front in taking over and civilizing every messed up basket case of a country in the world. The costs or the implications of what he is proposing don't bother him in the least. He doesn't, for example, think about where all these Americans are going to come from who are going to move to places like Somalia to bring civilization. Or how big a military is going to be required to protect all those people doing civil affairs work. Implicit in his strategy of appeasement I guess is that the US will dismantle its "useless" high-tech army are redeploy most of the people/money associated with it. Tanks, Carriers and Jet Fighters will no longer be necessary once we surrender all our friends in Asia to China. Barnett never goes that far, but I get the impression he wants to. In the end he is unwilling to even recognize the price tag of what he is proposing.
My largest disagreement with Barnett is over the nature of America and what the mission of the American military is. To Barnett, America is a country whose destiny is to lead and save the world. The American military's mission is nothing less than to save the world from itself. To me, America is my country and the first task of Americans is to improve our country. The role of our military is not to solve the world's problems, but to defend the country against threats. A dictator in South America or Africa is not necessarly a threat to America. If a country harbours terrorists, thats a threat. If a country in South America nationalizes its telephone system, thats not a threat to anyone except the country itself.
I think the book fails because of its appeasment of real strategic threats to America (China, Iran), its failure to make a case for why its in America's interests to fight all these wars and its failure to examine in a serious way how his "blueprint" is to be made real. Higher Taxes? Higher Deficits? A draft? Gutting the current military? Anyone can play Napoleon and come up with all sorts of grand strategy. The difference between playing and having a real strategy is in presenting a plan for how you realistically make it happen. Barnett fails to do so.
I would suggest his other book "the pentagon's new map" over this one.
A top pick not only for college-level political science holdings, but for the general-interest readers concerned .......2006-12-12
If the author's name sounds familiar, or part of the title of Blueprint for Action, it's because THE PENTAGON'S NEW MAP was a NewYork Times bestseller with its cutting analysis of war, peace, and international relations. Blueprint for Action: A Future Worth Creating continues where the prior book left off, comes from a senior advisor and military analyst, and discusses possible short- and long-term scenarios for relations with countries from Iran and Iraq to China and North Korea. It charts a possible course through a confusing world of political interrelationships and will prove a top pick not only for college-level political science holdings, but for the general-interest readers concerned with modern world political affairs.

Very unique thinker...but a bit too much jargon.......2006-09-22
(Something tells me the reviewer from Publishers Weekly didn't even read this book and instead just penned the review based upon some crib notes).
I won't debate any of Barnett's specific arguments as other reviwers have done.
He makes very understanadable that in the past generation the world has become majority with free market societies. This represents an incredible challenge to reactionary forces in the Middle East. How to help the modernizing elements of Arab, Persian, Asian and LAtin American socieities navigate their way into the global community is the key question in Barnett's arguments. This is called 'Shrinking The Gap'.
Rather than being a US led enterprise, Barnett makes if very clear this will be a cooperative efffort among the UN, the G-20 (20 largest economies), the ICC and the American military. The UN as your grand jury, the US military as your police force, the ICC as your criminal court witht the G-20 as your financier. A very intriguing possibility and one that should be discussed.
Once you dispose of bad actors (Kim Il Jong , Chavez, Castro) you have to follow up with intense development and reconstruction. Barnett notes that our failure to do this in Iraq is the chief source of our troubles today. The ultimate idea is to bring failed states quickly into connection with the global community so they can reap the benefits of globalization. If one can revamp and stablize a failed state, then foreign investment will flow into new lost-cost labor centers.
Overall, a very well thought out and provocative book. Barnett lays out his arguments logically and makes it easy to follow his train of thought.
A major drawback of the book is Barnett's constant use of his own jargon (one sees this in his blog also). One gets the sense he is very much in love with his own words. This is why I only give it four stars
