Customer Reviews:
Great Color Reference book for every kind of designer, or even fashionista.......2007-09-21
This book is a beautiful, beautifully put together quick reference to color! The illustrations, to-the-point text, and the resource of pallets makes it a great starting point or cheat-sheet to using color on designs for the concious mind. It has helped me greatly on basic projects like page layout, websites, and application design. This is a must have quick reference for anyone who cares about color harmony and psychological impact or stimuli of self or one's project/product on one's audience and needs on the fly application of the same. I highly recommended.
A Designers Necessity.......2007-03-10
Let's start by saying that I've been a Graphic and Multimedia Designer for over 10 years now. Like all beginners I used to think that design was all about what ever you liked best.
Well thats worth a good chuckle these days. As an experienced designer will tell you there's a lot more to good design than personal preference.
Matter of fact it's more like a science than anything else. Once you start diving into color theory and color association you begin to realize that there's quite a lot of information to retain and that there's a right and a wrong color for everything.
Well here's your reference guide!
This book has sat on my desk for the 4+ years that I've owned it and has definitely seen better days. The pages are falling out, the cover is beat ta heck and page 63 in particular has been scanned so that I could fold it up and put it in my pocket more times then I can count.
Leatrice keeps her explanations simple and direct and reinforces them with stellar designs of well known products from top notch agencies.
She adds a large section of color palettes in the middle but they've become a bit dated since the release of this book. Some of them are still nice and will at least inspire you to play with some similar colors.
As an added bonus the back of the book has the CMYK values for all of the pantones if you're one of the cave dwellers that dont have a Pantone booklet (shame on you!).
This is not the definitive color theory hand book!
You wont become a master after reading this and there are quite a few design fundamentals that are not included.
But it is a terrific and beautiful reference that you'll find yourself digging through constantly for information and inspiration.
It belongs on your bookshelf.
Nuff said.
Extremely helpful tool.......2007-03-08
Sometimes it's nice to have a resource like this on hand and ready to employ at will...
I've found this book to be very helpful in my recent endeavors.
COLOR!.......2007-01-05
I love this book! I am a visual presentation designer by trade and therefore did have some color theory classes in college, so much of the information given in this book was not foreign to me. However, the way the colour combinations are divided into moods, and the suggestions that go along with them make this book an absolute "must have" for any designer or artist's library!
Psychological Impact of Colors and Color Combinations.......2006-12-08
At the beginning of the book, the author offers a brief overview of psychological and emotional impact of individual colors (red, pink, oranga, yellow, brown, blue, green, purple, white and black), and then follows the section with different color combinations. Color combinations are sorted out according to the impact they would have upon the viewer and what mood would they convey (e.g. serene, earthy, mellow, powerful, spiritual, romantic, sensual, elegant, playful, energetic, etc). The author also suggests products and services where particular colors may be best suited or where some colors are best avoided.
While the psychological and emotional impact of colors is not exhaustive in this book, it is interesting enough to get you intrigues to further look into it elsewhere.

An ok read..........2006-01-14
Jeff Smith starts this book by saying he doesn't believe in getting more equipment than you should and that a lot of stuff is unnecessary gadgetry and bells and whistles, etc., but then he does not use that philosophy when describing ideal setups. As someone who does not have a high volume studio, some of his advice and explanation is impractical and almost impossible to implement.
He comes off a bit preachy, but does have some good points that made me evaluate my style and consistency and he does provide nice photographic examples of things he discusses.
This book, like the other Jeff Smith books, reads more as a biography than a how-to, and although he discusses image as important, a look at his website can induce a cringe.
Get this book if you haven't read anything by Jeff Smith and you want to hear how he does it (and he is very successful at it).

Predictable and outdated.......2000-12-28
There are some good tips, but this is strictly for the in-house portrait photographer using the standard 4 light system. A couple of good tips regarding broad vs. narrow lighting, height of main light, and use of light modifiers, but only about 3 pages on the actual business of portrait photography. Images in my opinion are outdated, and not that great.

First review of this mediocre out-of-print book.......2001-04-01
The author provided an Editorial Review over 3 years ago and yet this is the first reader review of this mediocre book. This book is even out of print but you can find this book boasted about on the author's web site. Most of the material is basic information to anyone even acquainted with the modeling industry. The "model photography" presented in the book is easily imitated by amateurs using basic lighting knowledge and techniques. Today, there are much better and up-to-date books on model photography available. In the author's Editorial Review of 3 years ago, he wants us to look forward to his next book, "PORTFOLIO". I couldn't find it anywhere including on the author's web site. If it was ever published, I would strongly recommend previewing it before making the purchase.

Disappointing.......2001-05-22
I've read and enjoyed other books in this series. But the last one I read was for 5 year-olds. Since then, parenting has been a joy. But as my son approaches his 10th birthday, his behavior lately has been baffling. A dizzying array of being un-reasonable, clinging, forgetful, competent, independent and non-responsive. I ordered this book for help. It gave me one or two clues, but it seemed like it was written while the author was waiting for a bus. The book was very shallow, much too brief, with frustratingly incomplete case studies. I read the whole book in about 20 minutes. I felt ripped off. There has to be something better out there about understanding 9-11 year-olds.

Book Description
Continuing where the author left off in Battles of the Thirty Years War, this companion volume details the military aspects of the final years of this important early modern conflict. Whereas the earlier half of the war was dominated by a few climactic battles (White Mountain, Lutter, Breitenfeld, and Nordlingen), the later period consisted of a more drawn-out struggle between more evenly matched opponents. The successful general had to conduct strategic campaigns, in which battles, sieges, maneuvers, and logistics would all play a part. Guthrie examines broad questions of strategy, leadership, armaments, organization, logistics, and war finances. Battles detailed in this volume include the Swedish victories of Wittstock, 2nd Breitenfeld, and Jankow; the French victories of Rheinfelden, Rocroi, Freiburg, and 2nd Nordlingen; as well as the anticlimactic action of Zusmarhausen. Guthrie emphasizes the unique aspects of the Thirty Years War, its place in the evolution of warfare and weapons, and the adjustment of the actual waging of war to the rise of the nascent linear system. Based on research previously unavailable in English, each campaign is recreated in detail, including orders of battle, tactics, and maps.

Flawed by one major error.......2006-10-19
Overall, Guthrie's books (this one and the earlier volume on the battles up to Noerdlingen) are very helpful, particularly for the appendices listing the units participating in each battle.
This one is flawed by a major factual error in regard to the Swedish commander Johan Baner (p. 45 and subsequent pages). Baner was not a commoner. He came from the highest Swedish nobility.

Book Description
Woodlands offer birds an extremely wide range of habitats. In this book, the variation in bird life in woodlands, and the factors that influence bird numbers and distributions are examined. What birds are found in which habitats? What effect does forestry and woodland management have? How can we enhance bird populations by habitat management? Are bird numbers and distributions in natural and managed forests different - and if so, why? The gamut of British woodland is covered, from ancient coppice and wood-pasture in the lowlands, to recently-planted conifer forests in the uplands, and comparisons are drawn with mainland Europe and North America. The book discusses the effects of factors such as increased deer numbers, air-pollution and new wood creation on lowland farms, all of which are changing the face of our woodlands today. This book is a must for all those interested in woodlands, and the birds which live in them.
