Book Description

Postmodernism has been a buzzword in contemporary society for the last decade. But how can it be defined? In this Very Short Introduction Christopher Butler challenges and explores the key ideas of postmodernists, and their engagement with theory, literature, the visual arts, film, architecture, and music. He treats artists, intellectuals, critics, and social scientists 'as if they were all members of a loosely constituted and quarrelsome political party' - a party which includes such members as Cindy Sherman, Salman Rushdie, Jacques Derrida, Walter Abish, and Richard Rorty - creating a vastly entertaining framework in which to unravel the mysteries of the 'postmodern condition', from the politicizing of museum culture to the cult of the politically correct.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Thoroughly POMO.......2007-08-28

Despite some of the reviews that indicated Christopher Butler's tone was negative toward Postmodernism in this VERY SHORT INTRODUCTION, I found the book very helpful with my growing understanding of meta-narrative terminology and classifications. Also, as pointed out by other reviewers, is the fact that defining a meta-discourse that supposes universal definitions are not possible, poses special problems that I feel Butler handled very nicely.

Butler, simply and rightly, maintained his neutrality on the subject, which it seems, should be the first of Post-modern goals. In other words, Postmodernism is neither good nor bad.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-03-11

Butler touches on all aspects of PM thought/aesthetics in; literature, architecture, art theory etc. and nails it right on the head.

It is fair to say, as some reviewers pointed out below, that he is certainly not a cheerleader for PM theory. He shows no mercy and points out all of the glaring contradictions of PM dogma as he sees them. (And so much the better, considering that much writing on the subject frustratingly skims over the absurd aspects of PM in favor of joining in on the lovefest).

Nevertheless, this is a very clearly written and fair-minded little document.

5 out of 5 stars wonderfully concise explanation.......2007-01-09

This book is a great read, even for a total novice, if it is read quickly without fussing over names or knowedge of artists. You can still get the big picture about the concepts underlying Postmodernist thinking and work. It is filled with references to work done in the style which will require some research for the average reader to get a more precise understanding of the artistic developments made under the influence of these ideas.

2 out of 5 stars It is what it says it is.......2007-01-09

This book serves as a fairly straightforward introduction to postmodern thinking. Unfortunately, it is overly critical of postmodernism, which may discourage the curious beginner from pursuing the subject further. It might have been more appropriately titled, "Postmodernism: A Very Short Critique". While there is nothing inherently wrong with casting a critical eye on postmodernism, an introduction should be more balanced than this book is. I would recommend "Teach Yourself Postmodernism by Glenn Ward as a better introduction.

5 out of 5 stars Quite Good.......2006-01-17

Along with Culler's Literary Theory Butler's Postmodernism represents a commendable "Very Short Introduction" to controversial ideas in the humanities. Both volumes are even-handed and well-explained. This is in sharp contrast to Catherine Belsey's Poststructualism: A Very Short Introduction. In the latter volume, the reader doesn't get anything like an even-handed overview. Instead, the reader gets one-sided advocacy of poststructuralist thinking, complete with the movement's characteristically strained logic and unconcern for clear expression.

5 out of 5 stars The making of an iconoclast........2005-06-25

In I Was Looking for a Street, Charles Willeford (1919-1988) tells in straightforward fashion what his early life was like. Orphaned by age 8 and a rail riding drifter by age 13, Willeford's childhood was a tough one. But there isn't an ounce of bitterness in this memoir. Instead of cursing his misfortune, Willeford sees each setback he endured, no matter how terrible, as a learning experience.

With a minimal amount of sentimentality, Willeford tells how the middle class life he was born into rapidly evaporated when tuberculosis claimed both his parents and, a few years later, the Great Depression thrust his beloved grandmother Mattie into poverty. He goes on to compellingly describe his life as a "road kid" among the hobos and tramps who hopped freight trains in a never ending journey to absolutely nowhere.

Fans of Willeford's novels and short stories will definitely want to read this short but amazing autobiography. Told with the author's trademark matter-of-fact style, the anecdotes contained in I Was Looking for a Street are quite interesting and reveal a lot about the origins of Willeford's unique worldview. Highly recommended.

      Book Description

This collection features I Was Looking for a Street, Willeford's personal reminiscence of the Great Depression, riding the rails across America's southwest as a young hobo, and Something about a Soldier, a remarkable recreation of a young soldier's recollection of a peacetime era now far in the past. Lively and unrestrained, these revealing pages will be relished by both old soldiers and today's civilians.

I Was Looking for a Street - The personal reminiscence of an orphaned boy without expectations. It reflects the stories of thousands of homeless men and boys, without roots, direction or work, adrift in the American southwest during the Great Depression - a panorama of desert and high mesa, cafes and bordellos, relief camps and soup kitchens, railroad yards and hobo jungles.

Something About a Soldier - This funny, rich raunchy autobiography re-creates the adventures of a very young soldier in the U.S. Army at the height of the Depression. Charles Willeford was sixteen in 1935 when he signed up and was sent to the Philippines. And the Philippines of those days was like a place out of another century.

Perfect in its depiction of an often brutish way of life - and the colorful mingling of unfettered boys, bitter old men, and even intellectuals - Something About a Soldier is a rare portrait of a vanished army.

      5 out of 5 stars Willeford.......2006-09-18

I just finished reading I Was Looking For A Street in more or less one sitting because I couldn't put it down. The story itself is fascinating and reads like a Willeford novel in terms of style, honest humor, and obsessive attention to detail. The fact that it is autobiographical is the really haunting part. The atmosphere felt like that of Willeford's Hombre From Sonora / The Difference, and in fact this memoir is mostly set in the same general part of the world. There are several typos in this paperback version and I'm surprised that the photographs included are of such low resolution -- they look like grainy photocopies and are printed directly on the raw paper, rather than glossy inserts or whatever. However, that doesn't detract from the text in any way. You can find the same photographs of Willeford and his family on the Internet after some searching.

      5 out of 5 stars It's amazing!.......2000-05-26

I read one of these books (Something about a Soldier)standing up in the UC Berkeley Library. It is a wonderful, evocative well written account that is funny and moving. I finally made a photocopy of it. It's that good. The second book (I was looking for a Strret) I read when a friend brought back a rare copy from the UK. It is haunting and beautifully written, about a time foreign to most of us.

His prose is wonderful and should be savored. These books are among his finest.

5 out of 5 stars Humorous, humane, and uplifting storytelling.......2003-05-30

Charles Willeford apparently wrote these two memoirs relatively late in life, but he tells the stories as he experienced them at the time rather than through the filter of his mature personality. In his own modest, plainspoken style, you get to know the interior world of Mr. Willeford, first as a young orphan, and later as a young recruit in the Air Corps. Willeford had a rough life, but--and this might be a surprise to those who only know Willeford through his pulp fiction--he didn't allow his difficult childhood or military experience to make him coarse and cynical. For all the darkness of his novels, he appears to have been a sensitive, optimistic, and humane person, whose dark humor was a means of coping with life's disappointments.

I hope that Willeford's books someday fall into the hands of a competent publisher. Disc-Us Books did an incredibly shoddy job preparing the book for publication. Not only are there many typos and dropped or repeated lines of text, but they even misspelled "memoir" on the spine of the book. Perhaps they've caught the error and fixed it, but my copy says "memior"!

      5 out of 5 stars Marvelous writer.......2002-10-27

Willeford is one of the best writers America has produced.

5 out of 5 stars Two strange worlds, sharply rendered.......2002-08-21

The Great Depression is a time and a place that is foreign to most living Americans. GD USA is a country where nearly everyone is living in dire poverty, and the country itself is on the brink of collapse. Willeford, one of the most underappreciated writers of the 20th century, captures this odd world perfectly as he chronicles his picaresque travels through an economically devastated America.

The second memoir takes place in the U.S. Army off in the exotic Philippines during peacetime--years before the Japanese came, and 30 years after an insurrection that was put down in brutal fashion by American soldiers. Willeford leads you into an exotic world of malfunctioning aeroplanes and imperial slouching by indolent imperial soldier-airmen using pitch-perfect prose.

      Book Description

A compilation from the author's famous underground weekly comic book Los Agachados (The Underdogs). In this book, he creates an alternative version of the Mexico to the one constantly promoted by the Institutional Revolutionary Party, one more akin to the reality of the average Mexican.Eduardo del Rio, aka Rius, is Mexico's foremost graphic narrator and one of the world's most famous cartoonists. Rius invented a new cartoon idiom by pictorially telling a story through monolog or dialog in which real characters and anonymous commentators interact to explain complex social and political issues. Rius's style uses humor as well as simple language and imagery to make these issues easily understood by all--his work fits into a '60s pedagogical tradition called concientizadora (raising consciousness).

Los Agachados by Rius (Eduardo Del Rio) is a great read and a great philosophical and political view of Mexico and the world in the 60's and 70's with crude humor. The book has a selection of some weekly issues but lacks some classic episodes by rius such as "Cristo de carne y hueso".

The Birthday Book of Saints is NOT a Catholic book, although it has the appearance of such. To read this book is to jepardize your Faith, so I recommend that you do not read it. This book is filled with many, many examples of completely ludicrous information about the Saints in light of the Catholic Faith. Just to name a few examples of the total obsurdity of their claims: Jesus dated St. Margaret Mary and then exposed himself to her, (described as possibly sexual), Jesus had brothers and sisters (take a look at Matt 27:56 and John 19:25 to see that those mentioned as his 'brothers' are really cousins because they have different parents!), Dorothy Day is a Saint (she has not been canonized yet!), Jesus' foreskin is kept in a jar in Rome, and many more. This book appears to be for children, but the language and sexual details in the book make it wholly inappropriate for kids.

Take a heed from the front cover of the book. One of the authors is noted to be a practicing Ex-Catholic. He needs to stop practicing, he's really good at it now.

5 out of 5 stars Information and Entertainment.......2001-10-27

This great book offers both entertainment and information. After finding your own birthday Saint and your own Saint's Day, you can curl up with this book and learn in a delightful way.

I never knew that Nathaniel Hawthorne's daughter devoted her life to incurable cancer patients, or that one could invoke Saint Eurosia against bad weather, or that Saint Margaret Clitherow was the patron of businesswomen!

This is a book for everybody.

              Book Description

The six studies collected in this CESifo volume analyze the sometimes unpredictable effects of public regulation on the labor market. Examining a wide range of policy interventions -- from subsidized employment to an increased tax on capital -- and using a variety of methodologies to analyze them, these contributions by leading scholars of the European labor market will advance the policy debate over regulation at a time of serious labor market problems in Europe and elsewhere.

The first three chapters of Labor Market Institutions and Public Regulation present empirical findings, comparing the effects of job training and subsidized employment on the Swedish labor market, analyzing the effect of extended unemployment benefits on unemployment duration for older Austrian workers, and examining poor labor market performance in Spain even after policy reforms. The following chapters take a more theoretical approach, applying the analytical tools of theory to policy issues. These three studies examine the general equilibrium repercussions of public support for both basic and higher education, develop an efficiency wage model to analyze mandated severance pay, and compare different kinds of redistribution to low-skill workers financed by an increased tax on capital.

                  Book Description

From the creators of the Berenstain Bears children's books comes a fresh and funny, trenchant and truthful look at what it means to be a parent. What Your Parents Never Told You About Being a Mom or Dad leaves you with more than a chuckle as the Berenstains provide advice and laughs on how to navigate the treacherous terrain of parenthood.

Reel Wisdom -- Persuading a child to do it "your way" is like landing a ten-pound bass on a one-pound line -- it has to be done very carefully. A firm steady pull rather than a series of tugs is more likely to meet with success.

No Contest -- Recognize that in any contest with your child you are seriously overmatched. Your child is naturally possessed of the guile of Wile E. Coyote, combined with the sheer energy of the Road Runner, while you, poor soul, the now-animated equivalent of Elmer Fudd.

On the Natural Superiority of Children to Dogs and Cats -- A dog gives you perfect love, a cat total rejection. A child offers the advantage of giving you perfect love and total rejection -- often simultaneously.

The Berenstains have helped countless children to be a little more courageous about scary things, a little smarter about tempting things, and a little more thankful about happy things in their young lives. Now, from their grandfatherly and grandmotherly perspective, and with their usual warmth, wisdom, and wit, the Berenstains help parents feel the same way about the scary, tempting, and happy things in their grown-up lives.

Having served in a security role as a Marine Security Guard with the Department of State, I found this book fasinating! It really shows in detail the circumstances surrounding several different situations that occured at embassies throughout the world. It also shows our Diplomats at their finest. The Department of State is not usually looked upon as a "macho" agency in the US Government. This book also shows the close relationship between the US Marine Corps and the Department of State. A very good book for aspiring Diplomats to read concerning the other side of Diplomacy!!!

The premises of this book are that during the late 70" and 80's budget cuts decreased the amount of money the State Department could spend on the embassy program. The cuts they chose to make were to the site security forces and the actual compound security equipment. The book also gives the reader a nice little run down of all the attaches they have faced over the past 25 years.

The most interesting parts of the book were the known safety issues that were brought up by embassy staff, but could not be corrected due to funding problems. Then to correlate these safety issues with the events that have taken place or the past few years, it is chilling to see the mistakes that were made. Overall this is an interesting book.

"Embassies Under Siege" tells the story of some of the greatest tragedies and dramas of modern diplomacy. Told by Americans who experienced shattering events, these first-hand accounts speak of courage, terror, and blunders as ordinary foreign service officers attempt to cope with extraordinary circumstances. The immediacy of the writing, brevity of the chapters, and the harrowing reality of the assassinations, bombings and hostage-takings make this a quick read. Yet you will ponder the lessons of "Embassies Under Siege" long after you've finished the book. A must-read for anyone interested in foreign affairs and the challenges of diplomacy in developing countries.

                      Book Description

Francis Fukuyama’s criticism of the Iraq war put him at odds with neoconservative friends both within and outside the Bush administration. Here he explains how, in its decision to invade Iraq, the Bush administration failed in its stewardship of American foreign policy. First, the administration wrongly made preventive war the central tenet of its foreign policy. In addition, it badly misjudged the global reaction to its exercise of “benevolent hegemony.” And finally, it failed to appreciate the difficulties involved in large-scale social engineering, grossly underestimating the difficulties involved in establishing a successful democratic government in Iraq.
Fukuyama explores the contention by the Bush administration’s critics that it had a neoconservative agenda that dictated its foreign policy during the president’s first term. Providing a fascinating history of the varied strands of neoconservative thought since the 1930s, Fukuyama argues that the movement’s legacy is a complex one that can be interpreted quite differently than it was after the end of the Cold War. Analyzing the Bush administration’s miscalculations in responding to the post–September 11 challenge, Fukuyama proposes a new approach to American foreign policy through which such mistakes might be turned around—one in which the positive aspects of the neoconservative legacy are joined with a more realistic view of the way American power can be used around the world.

3 out of 5 stars The history of the neoconservative movement and its hijacking........2007-09-04

OK, I am not a neoconservative. However, I wanted to know a little more about this movement since many in the Administration are deemed neoconservatives. Fukuyama makes his point that real neoconservatives didn't want to go to war in Iraq. An element of the neoconservative movement made that decision much to the dismay of most leading members. He then cites the reasons why the Iraq War was not on the neoconservative agenda. I am not sure his different shadings of political movements made sense. What does make sense are the wrong reasons we went to war in Iraq.

This is a politics book and attempts to put a political label on what neoconservatives, conservatives, and liberals are. I am not sure we can put everybody in a political category. However, the book gave me a somewhat better idea what neoconservatives stand for on the foreign policy agenda of this country.

The past success of Francis Fukuyama has created high expectations for each new book and he does not disappoint us with America at the Crossroads. The book is an excellent primer for understanding the state of the foreign policy of the United States. The scope of this work is more narrow and focused than his classic The End of History and the Last Man, which is arguably one of the greatest non-fiction books of the twentieth century.

This new work is focused on American foreign policy after September 11th. The contentious and confusing topic is expertly analyzed and explained by Fukuyama in a manner that is understandable to the layperson, yet thorough and complex. It is a thought-provoking analysis that is unusually non-partisan. Extremists from both the left and right political circles will not find countenance in this book. Professor Fukuyama is astutely fair in his criticism of the Bush Administration and, yet, carefully realistic on what the U.S. options are in fighting Islamic terrorism.

This book is highly recommended to anyone who wants to broaden their understanding of the foreign policy matters. It should be required reading by all presidential candidates and the media who cover those candidates. It is a rarity to find this combination of complexity, evenhandedness, and readability in one book.

                      4 out of 5 stars Anarchistically arrogant.......2007-07-13

With The End of History and The Last Man, Fukuyama provided neo-conservatives and their political acolytes with the academic legitimacy they did not have otherwise. So the world and history was no longer moving thanks to the free play of its inner contradictions but it had reached its end. Fukuyama, fifteen years later, does not criticize this basic idea of his, but criticizes the neo-conservatives who turned this anti-historical pronunciamento into the policy that led to the Iraq catastrophe. Fukuyama is thus totally unaware of his responsibility. But he shows clearly how Iraq has become a major mistake and hence a major hindrance and handicap in the aftermath of Iraq. But he does not change his idea that America is the only superpower in the world, not understanding the change occurring right now under our own eyes with the Shanghai Cooperation Organization that brings together, among others, Russia, China, India, Kazakhstan, etc. He still goes on advocating that the US has the sole responsibility in the world to promote democracy. Yet he concedes two points. That has to be done through rather homogeneous coalitions, not understanding the world has to be managed collectively with and by everyone. He also concedes that democracy and regime change has to come from within a country and not from outside. And yet he advocates the voluntary association of some states around the US to promote and impose the US point of view and interest. He even goes one wide step further by considering the UN should be sidetracked and replaced by an array of organizations that would overlap over one another. The examples he defends are the International Organization for Standards (ISO) and the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), two absolutely opaque and non-transparent organizations bringing together private interests and enabling these to establish their rules and impose their power. ICANN is an archetypical case since it only depends on the US Commerce Department and it regulates the Internet through extensions and addresses. Fukuyama forgets to state what ICANN did at the beginning of the War on Iraq at the demand of Washington: it clicked the extension "iq" out, grounding all internet relation inside or from Iraq and all internet relation from outside Iraq into the country. It erased Iraq off the map of the Internet and global communication. And this imperialistic approach is consistently repeated from beginning to end in this book, even if it seems to consider the war on Iraq and the global war against terror were two fundamental mistakes. He is so far away from reality that he scholastically asserts that Moslem militants are young people born from Arab immigrants in poor and deprived suburbs in Europe, themselves being poor, deprived and largely uneducated, as if the French had not seen highly trained technicians moving into these groups as soon as the late 1980s and as if Glasgow and London did not reveal that place of highly educated people in these groups. And the conclusion he borrows from Madeleine Albright is typical of his own stance: "Americans deserve to lead because they can `see further' than other people." This is plainly vain and can turn into arrogance in no time.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting and formidable reading .......2007-05-14

This is a dense book on political theory. It covers the origins and future direction of the neoconservative movement. Primarily a personal essay by analyst (and former neocon supporter) Francis Fukuyama, it meanders, digresses and, at times, makes a call for action. He includes enough academic material to make both interesting and formidable reading, even for those with a serious interest in government. This is not about everyday politics, but about underlying ideas and concepts, although the author does not clearly state what he thinks will happen after the neoconservatives are removed from power - or even how soon, or if, that might happen. He reserves his recommendations for the last chapter, but the book's opaque presentation and unfortunately stilted language blunt his usual bite about the role of the neoconservative movement. We recommend this book primarily to those who have followed Fukuyama's earlier works or who are very interested in political theory. Serious poly sci students will find it rich and substantive.

4 out of 5 stars fake bait and an empty hook.......2007-01-29

I am both impressed and disappointed with Fukuyama's latest work. What impresses me is Fukuyama's incredibly extensive knowledge of American history (including the history of American ideas) and his savvy with respect to American foreign policy. In America at the Crossroads he shows his brilliance as an astute critic of neoconservatism and the Bush administration's handling of the Iraq war. I reckon I must be impressed with what is in the book. My disappointment, then, must be owed to what is not in the book; namely, a robust alternative to neoconservative ideology, which Fukuyama promises in the introduction, but never delivers.
