Many audiophiles describe jazz as the one true form of American music. Understanding Alzheimer's.......2000-02-12

John Medina, Ph.D. not only authored this detailed, concise book about Alzheimer's Disease, but also drew the terrific graphics describing the various aspects of the disease.

Medina spends quite a bit of time explaining the "biology of Alzheimer's Disease" which can get quite technical. But, if you are interested in how the brain and nerve cells are affected, as well as other physical aspects of the disease, you will love these sections. His graphics are superb. My other favorite chapters deal with understanding difficult behavior, suggesting helpful, personal interventions, and offering practical advice for helping with the activities of daily living for a person with Alzheimer's Disease.

In short, the book is wonderfully designed, clearly detailed, and touchingly compassionate.

Great story, poorly written.......2007-01-30

Pararescue has all the elements of a great true-life rescue adventure: Painstaking research reveals a story of real heros working in impossible conditons against an implaccable natural foe, who face overwhelming odds in attempting to rescue merchant seamen in peril.
Unfortunately, the account is written in a droning first-person narrative that is a chore to read. What could have been a bestseller reads more like the voice-over script for a television documentary.
Only the fact that the true story is itself gripping enabled me to slog through the clumsy writing to experience this tale of bravery and heroism.

An Inspirational Pararescue.......2001-07-26

The book really gave me an idea of the training and gratification that goes along with military rescue forces. Perhaps if you are not very interested in military, you will not find the same respect as I did for "Pararescue." If you are a military buff, read it!! I've been on the phones with the 106th talking about a flight slot!

Gripping true adventure superbly told.......2001-03-10

This true story of a single adventure raised my concepts of courage and heroism to new levels. As a former journalist myself, I marveled at the author's attention to detail in exposing the gritty work of a group of men who dedicate themselves to saving lives through airborne rescue missions. The description of their elite training is worth the price of admission alone. But the tale of the rescue that is the focus of this book takes it over the top; it rivals the best adventure fiction you'll ever experience.

Another reviewer said Clint Eastwood will have a starring role in the movie they make from this book. My bet is that Harrison Ford will buy the rights to this All-American five-star thriller. Anyhow, read it now. Hollywood can't make the story any better.

Sunken Ship - Culture Clash.......2001-02-18

Great Read!

Pararescue, by Michael Hirsh, is one of the most thoroughly researched contemporary military history novels I have read. As a Marine officer, I am critical of books, movies, and articles about the military when they don't "get it right." I couldn't find one obvious inaccuracy in this book, which tells me Mr. Hirsh was very careful in his examination of the Air Force Pararescue community, and of the little-known USMC KC-130 aerial refueling tanker community.

Most interesting to me was the comparison of the philosophies of the helicopter crews of the 102nd Rescue Squadron, and that of the Marines of Yanky 03 - the Marine tanker crew from VMGR-452. Their attitudes and beliefs seemed to be identical - "Whatever it takes to get the job done." By contrast, the mind-set of the Air Force C-130 tanker crews seemed to be "Whatever excuse we can find to get out of this dangerous mission" and "What about our crew rest?" Strange that the "factions" mentioned in this story would be Air Force Helicopter crews and Marine on one side, and Air Force C-130 crews on the other.

Air Force LtCol Fleming, the Flight-lead of the 102 Rescue Squadron's H-60 Blackhawk rescue team, and the true hero of the book, should have been a Marine. Coming from a Marine, that is the ultimate compliment. Clint Eastwood should play his part in the movie version of this book.

The Perfect Story.......2001-01-17

If the story of PJs have captured your interest, this is the perfect book to read after reading/watching "The Perfect Storm". Unlike Jack Brehm's autobio "That Others May Live" which was a difficult read as it was slow and a tad boring, "Pararescue" presents the rescue operation in it's entirety, not just from the perspective of one person. The planing, skill and efforts are all brought to life in a well written book. I would love to see a factual book written about PJs on a Special Operations mission along with Delta Forces or Rangers.

A wonderful and rich look at everyday life in Kabul.......2007-09-19

A year in the life of a wealthy (by Afghan standards) bookseller whose focus is the preservation of literature and books for the next generation. The lengths to which he will do this often compromise his family, best revealed in the irony of denying his sons the privilege of going to school so they can work in his shops. Beautifully observed and touching, particularly the roles of women in the patriarchal family structure, who must carefully manage how much they can dream about their own lives. You won't soon forget this story after you have read the last page.

Reading as a Dangerous Activity.......2007-08-23

This amazing story follows an Afghani bookseller and his family, who opened their doors to a Western journalist (Norwegian Asne Seierstad). She becomes part of the family in a desire to understand what daily life is like for Afghanis in their own country, particularly women. In this book, Seierstad shares this family's hardships, sorrows, and joy. Reeling from the ravages of war, mired in poverty, and limited by traditions of the Taliban, the Afghanistan that Seierstad brings us is even more compelling because of its inside look at what one middle class family must endure.

She brings us into the heart of matters: the bookseller's determination and drive to continue his trade (which included spending several years in jail, as well as living under censorship and illegal border crossings to bring books to the people of Kabul). She also examines the life of his children and his two wives. No other book captures so graphically what it is like to be a woman in a burka living in Afghanistan today. This book will have every Western woman thanking her lucky stars that she was born into more tolerant conditions that allow her a choice of career, marriage partner, and pursuit of her own happiness...freedoms most Westerners take for granted.

Because of her journalist status, Seierstad is able to show us the stories of both men and women. With a war correspondent's background, she is able to fill in the historical perspective while still maintaining an unprecedented level of intimacy in this tale. This is truly a remarkable book, well written and compelling. Its value is sure to stand the test of time.

A fascinating look at Afghanistan.......2007-08-23

The Bookseller of Kabul is a fine book which illuminates a culture and country with both honesty and understanding. It is written like a novel, yet the reader is convinced of the authenticity of the narrative; and Seierstad is clear when she expresses her own opinions. It is not difficult to share her views of the treatment of women in the Afghan household where she herself is hospitably and generously treated. The lack of opportunity to escape the stifling and destructive prison of womanhood in Afghanistan is tragic. She also examines the power of the authoritarian head of the family who denies his own children an education or freedom to make some choices of their own.

It is evident that the thoughtless acceptance of traditional beliefs of the role of women or the rights of the "man of the house" cannot be easily changed or even modified. I closed the book with a feeling of sadness and hopelessness, but with admiration for Asne Seierstad's skill and sensibilities.

Bookseller is the Best.......2007-07-19

A gripping story and personal insight into a wealthy Kabul family. I could hardly put it down and learned a lot about modern Afghanistan life.

Not So Simple.......2007-07-01

At first blush, this book appears to be about a "modern" man in Afghanistan, but alas as you read further it is not so simple. Sultan is a complex character as is the country he lives in. For the first few chapters you grow to like Sultan and his strong moral compass, by the end (as the author does too) you can not help but grow to despise him and his despotic ways. The female characters are painful and enlightening. Painful to see such potential thwarted at every turn and enlightening to see how others live. Sadly, the conclusion is that Afghanistan is doomed to exist as a 3rd world country for the foreseeable future as Sultan is one of the more modern thinkers in this complex land. Beware: this is not an uplifting look at the potential for a modern Afghanistan.
