1 out of 5 stars not a comprehensive handbook.......2006-06-28

mr. yumoto's work is very descriptive and pictures fill the pages more than text does.

"Samurai Sword a Handbook" lacks an analytic quality that would bring togheter the social, historical, technical and martial dimensions of the nihonto.

last but not least, such an important - and relatively undocumented - subject as care and maintenance of japanese blades is simply and vaguely evoked in two pages that make up a ridiculous chapter.

all in all, yumoto's work is too old to be satisfying to comtemporary readers in search of a meaningful, concise handbook which would explain rather than describe.

5 out of 5 stars GOOD SOURCE.......2006-03-17

A PERFECT SOURCE WHO WANTS TO LEARN ABAUT JAPANESE SWORDS AND THEIR HISTORY

3 out of 5 stars confused..........2006-03-03

I finished reading it yesterday. It is too much for beginner and not enough for intermediate or even expert...

It is definitely usefull for future reference in terms of finding more about your sword or swords you want to buy and using some of the criterias. Photos are B&W and crappy and references text-to-drawings are badly organized.

What is strongly missing is types of sword damage, how to eveluate type of damage and find it on blades etc...

I dont know when book was written but some information also seems bit obsolete...

If the book was hardcover, had two times more pages, colored photos to go with drawings, better organized and have more information, I would give 5. Now I give 3 of 5.

5 out of 5 stars Great first sword book.......2005-10-27

This is a good, short overview of the basics of Japanese Swords. Recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Great book.......2005-05-05

This is an awesome book for anyone wnating to know more about samurai swords and speaking as a beginner myself, I found that this book explained everything clearly and concisely - I now know a lot more about swords than i did before :)

                    Book Description

Elizabeth Catlett, born in Washington, DC, in 1915, is widely acknowledged as a major presence in African American art, and her work is celebrated as a visually eloquent expression of African American identity and pride in cultural heritage. But this is not the whole story. She has lived in Mexico for 50 years, as a citizen of that country since 1962, and she and her husband, artist Francisco Mora, have raised their children there. For 20 years she was a member of the Taller de Gráfica Popular (Popular Graphic Arts Workshop) and she was the first woman professor of sculpture at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. Her extraordinary career has stretched from her years as a student at Howard University during the 1930s through various political and social movements—including the Chicago Renaissance of the 1940s, the Black Power and Black Arts movements, the Mexican Public Art Movement, and feminism—which have informed her art.

This richly illustrated and informative monograph is the first to document the full range of Catlett's life and work. In addition to thoroughly researching primary source materials and to critiquing individual art works with sensitivity and erudition, the author has conducted numerous interviews with Catlett and has analyzed with clarity the political context of her work and her diverse sympathies and allegiances. Herzog examines key artistic influences and shows how Catlett transformed an extraordinary stylistic vocabulary into a socially charged statement.

In tracing Catlett's long and continuing career as a graphic artist and sculptor in Mexico, Herzog explores an important period in Catlett's life between the 1950s and the 1970s about which almost nothing is known in the United States. She examines the "Mexicanness" in Catlett's work in its fluent relationship to the underlying and constant sense of African American identity she brought with her to Mexico. Herzog's solidly grounded interpretation offers a new way to understand Catlett's work and reveals this artist as a fascinating and pivotal intercultural figure whose powerful art manifests her firm belief that the visual arts can play a role in the construction of a meaningful identity, both transnational and ethnically grounded.

If you use the Macintrash and has tons of money for high-end software, this may be for you. For 99% of the world, this book doesn't give you anything you can put to use. Avoid.

This is overall a good book, although I did not find it too
useful for myself or my son (he is 12 and into moviemaking).
Not useful for two major reasons:
                    - mostly (if not exclusevely) oriented towards Mac hardware
and software (and higher end software),
                    - is for more advanced users, since it discusses semi-pro and
pro video equipment, and more than trivial editing tricks
                    and effects.
Nevertheless it is entertaining and educational to read and
                    includes a DVD ...

4 out of 5 stars Great way to learn the practical aspects of FW moviemaking.......2001-12-27

I have been using a camera for many years (... has my boating/flying clips), know how FireWire Macs work, can throw a decent amateur home video together, and now with my PowerMac G4 and Apple's movie making magic apps I am begining to expand my horizons. So, I was pleasantly surprised at how much useful information I got from this book. I think the title is a bit misleading. FireWire has nothing to do with film making, IMHO. After all, that is like saying that I can become a better writer if I have DSL at home instead of a dial-up connection. (I do have DSL, and believe me, it did not make me a better writer ;-) ).

So, it is more appropriate to say that is is an excellent book for people planning to use FireWire ENABLED devices to get into the art, business or hobby of making movies. (Interesting that we still call it Film making when in fact most of the stuff we do on these technologies will never see a frame of film).

The book simplifies many of the mysteries that novice moviemakers may face as they not only try to learn how to use things like Final Cut Pro (or iMovie/iDVD etc. from Apple {... is a great resource)) but also figuring out what and how FireWire can do for them. This book simplifies that part quite a bit. I do most of my moviemaking with a decent consumer FireWire equipped Panasonic DV-701 and found this book helpful in deciding what level of camera to buy, for example, and why some day I will want to buy a 3-CCD camera instead of the one this camera is based on. It helped me understand what kind of techniques I could use in making movies with my equipment. It helped me understand some of the issues I would face if I wanted to make movies that would play in non-US parts of the world that use a different standard, etc. In short, I found the book extremely useful, extremely easy to read, detailed enough to be useful, not so detailed as to be boring and left unread or put on a shelf and forgotten.

If you are looking into making movies, ideally with a FireWire equipped set of tools, this is a great book, but even for people not ready to invest in all that FireWire equipment yet, the book will be a useful addition to their toolset.

Joe's artwork isn't really my cup of tea, but the writing represented by the nine pieces collected here is quite impressive. Blending personal, almost semi-autobiographical stories ("Death Wears Inexpensive Loafers" and "C.O.P.S.") with mythic fables ("God"), the range of storytelling is quite wide. "Giant Strawberry Funland" stands out with its tale of family, love, hate, and responsibility. "God" is a silly bit of spiritual selfishness. "Cake" is a wonderful office mate update of an urban legend probably based on fact. And two pieces -- "Like Something Akin to the Sistine Chapel, but with Cows..." and "Fire Sale" -- really impressed me with their character studies and slice-of-life snapshots. Joe's drawing grew on me as the book progressed, and I'm sure his style will continue to gel as his writing -- which is already quite good -- continues to grow in maturity and motivation. ....

                    5 out of 5 stars Archie Rules!.......2002-02-18

Okay, I've been collecting Archie comics since I was like 8 or 9 (5-6 years) and I've got to say that I LOVE THESE COMICS! I have about 500 digests and about 100 flat comics. They aren't you normal "superhero" comics or your Garfield type comics that are only a strip long. These stories run about 4-7 pages long each (there are a lot of stories in a digest comic, even more in a double-digest), except the many part ones which can run up to like 20-30 pages. There are also little page joke ones scattered throughout the books. These comics are funny and very enjoyable to read. Some of the characters and problems you can relate to, while others are just plain outragious and funny! The characters are each well planned out. Here are a few:

                    The five main ones are:

Archie Andrews(of course)-a nice, girl-crazy, well-meaning, but VERY clumsy all around American boy who is in love with two girls (Betty and Veronica)

Betty Cooper- a too nice, typical girl next door girl who loves Archie with all her heart. her best friend and worst rival is Veronica

Veronica Lodge- snotty, daddy's little rich girl whos father is a zillionaire! but underneath it all, she has a heart of gold. she loves Archie some of the time, but also uses him as a puppet.

Reggie Mantle- richer than Archie and Betty, but not a millionaire or anything. he flaunts his new cars and stuff in people's faces. REALLY REALLY conceited and in love with himself (also Veronica) the trickster of the gang

Jughead (real name Forsythe) Jones- eats too much, sleeps too much, really lazy, girl-hater. the best friend of Archie, Jughead is really a real great guy. He may look like a slug, but he's really one of the nicest guys in the world

                    other characters include:
Moose Mason: very strong, very jealous
Midge Klump: Moose's girlfriend, nice, smart
Dilton Doiley: a genious, but short which causes girl problem
Big Ethel: in love with Jughead
Hiram Lodge: Veronca's father, hates Archie

Waldo Weatherbee: principal of the high school, has the same problems with Archie as Mr. Lodge
and many more, but it would take FOREVER to write them all out!
Put them all together, and you get CHAOS!!!!!!! These comics are prettily drawn (and in color). If you buy one of these, you'll be hooked for life! (Hey, they've been running since the 40s! People MUST like them!) I personally would give them 5000000 stars! Buy them and you won't regret it.

                    5 out of 5 stars Read these!.......2002-02-05

Archie Comics are the best!!!! Okay that doesn't say a lot abou them, but They're sooo funny. Even though Veronica & REggie can be really snobby at times. It's still a really funny comic. It's really just about archie and his friends + his life!!!! You can also get ones that r called betty and veronica which are mainly about them. Either way I think there really good. Just try one! YOu'll luv em!!! [....]
p.s. sorry if this doesn't really describe the comics. it's kinda hard to explain, ya see.

                      Book Description

This refreshingly current music appreciation text provides a scholarly examination of popular music's roots and history. The organization and the context of the survey reflect its introductory intent and aids the student in gaining an increased awareness of the heritage of popular music: to appreciate its diversity; to perceive the underlying kinship of its many styles; to sense its evolutionary momentum.

4 out of 5 stars Good text on American Pop Music.......2004-12-05

I find this textbook to be very good, especially compared to those in its field.

Starting with a brief introduction, the textbook covers the basics of musical sound (beat, timbre, dynamics) and then touches on the elements and sources of popular music. The book then begins historically with minstrel songs ("Oh Susanna" and the like), Ragtime, the Blues, Jazz, Broadway, Tin Pan Alley, Latin Music, and finally Rock and Jazz Fusion (with a little bit of disco and punk).

What's great about this textbook is that even it is accessible for undergraduate college students and even high schoolers, the material is presented in a scholarly fashion. I've not always found that to be the case when it comes to writings about rock music. You can find a lot of fluff out there.

The textbook also has a companion 5-CD set purchased separately. I feel it is extremely helpful, and the book refers to the recordings ALL THE TIME. It's really necessary. There are some songs referred to where Campbell was unable to get the copyright permission, but he has a Discography list at the back of the book for those interested.

This book gets four stars mainly because it's so light on rock after the sixties. The eighties has very little material, and there is only one hip-hop example (Public Enemy). The book really needs a new edition.

Don't use this book for a course on rock alone, but it works great as a text on popular music.

                      5 out of 5 stars I've met Dr. Campbell.......2003-02-02

and took his class. I'm pretty sure he even knows me by name. I bought the book, but never read it. I've yet to return the book, so someday in the future, i may read it. But if that book is one tenth as good as his lectures and computer notes were, then i give it my full endoresement.

I am a college instructor and have decided to use this book in my History of Popular Music class. I found this book to be very thorough and concise and stays focused on relevant material. I also appreciate the use of historical context when describing a period of music. This book is fun, entertaining, and very informative as it relays the development of our pop music. A must read for music lovers--even if you are not in school!

4 out of 5 stars Excellent coverage of the evolution of music in America.......1999-09-03

The Beat Goes On provides an excellent view of how we got from "Oh, Susanna" to "My Sharonna".The only problems are caused by trying to cover so much material in one book. Anyone who wants to learn why what we listen to sounds they way it does should get this book. Hihgly recommended.

                              Book Description

At a time when the idea of wilderness is being challenged by both politicians and intellectuals, Imagining Wild America examines writing about wilderness and wildness and makes a case for its continuing value. The book focuses on works by John James Audubon, Henry David Thoreau, John Muir, Edward Abbey, Wendell Berry, and Mary Oliver, as each writer illustrates different stages and dimensions of the American fascination with wild nature. John Knott traces the emergence of a visionary tradition that embraces values consciously understood to be ahistorical, showing that these writers, while recognizing the claims of history and the interdependence of nature and culture, also understand and attempt to represent wild nature as something different, other.
A contribution to the growing literature of eco-criticism, the book is a response to and critique of recent arguments about the constructed nature of wilderness. Imagining Wild America demonstrates the richness and continuing importance of the idea of wilderness, and its attraction for American writers.
John R. Knott is Professor of English, University of Michigan. His previous books include The Huron River: Voices from the Watershed, coedited with Keith Taylor.

5 out of 5 stars The Classic Account of the Battle of Britain.......2006-11-11

"The Narrow Margin", first published in 1961 and periodically updated and reissued since, is the classic account of the Battle of Britain. The defeat by an undermanned British Royal Air Force (RAF) of the German Luftwaffe offensive to gain air superiority over Britain in 1940 likely staved off a German invasion and kept Britain in the war.

Authors Derek Wood and Derek Dempster provide a methodical account of the air battle, beginning with the retooling of the British and German air forces in the 1930's in preparation for conflict. Each side made choices about the types of aircraft they would develop that shape their successes in the Second World War. The second part of the book discusses the Fall of France in 1940 and Britain's frantic preparations after the Dunkirk evacuation to build up the defenses of the home island. Part three is a day by day account of the actual air battles between July and October 1940, tracing the shifting tactics and objectives of the two sides.

This book is a factual account, packed with an excellent selection of photographs, graphics, maps, and appendices. Those readers looking for a romantic account of a few handfulls of embattled British fighter pilots standing off the undefeated might of the Luftwaffe will have other alternatives to this volume, which focuses on the practical necessities of efficient early warning, the comparative values of different aircraft, the availability of trained pilots, and the use of effective tactics. Incidentally, "The Narrow Margin" was the basis for the 1969 movie "The Battle of Britain."

This book is highly recommended to students of the Battle of Britain and the Second World War.

                                      Book Description

With US political leaders Democrat and Republican alike rushing to embrace the recommendations of the 9/11 Commission, and an eager media receiving the Commission's 567-page report as the whole story, the history we can stand upon forevermore, everyone who cares about the fate of American democracy will want to know something about what those pages actually say.

The Commission's account, by popular reckoning, has made an impression with its heft, its footnotes, its portrayal of the confusion of that sobering day, its detail, its narrative finesse. Yet under the magnifying glass of David Ray Griffin, eminent theologian and author of The New Pearl Harbor (a book that explores questions that reporters, eyewitnesses, and political observers have raised about the 9/11 attacks), the report appears much shabbier. In fact, there are holes in the places where detail ought to be thickest: Is it possible that Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld has given three different stories of what he was doing the morning of September 11, and that the Commission combines two of them and ignores eyewitness reports to the contrary? Is it possible that the man in charge of the military that day, Acting Head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Myers, saw the first tower hit on TV, and then went into a meeting, where he remained unaware of what was happening for the next 40 minutes? Is it possible, as the Commission reports, that the FAA did not inform military that the fourth airplane appeared to have been hijacked-contrary to both common sense and the word of FAA employees? Is it possible that the Report, upon which are based recommendations for overhauling the nation's intelligence, fails to mention even in a footnote the most serious allegations made public by Coleen Rowley, FBI whistleblower and Time person of the year?

David Ray Griffin's critique of the Kean-Zelikow report makes clear that our nation's highest leaders have told tales that wear extremely thin when held up to the light of other eyewitness reports, research, and the dictates of common sense-and that the Commission charged with the task of investigating all of the facts surrounding 9/11 has succeeded in obscuring, rather than unearthing, the truth.

"It is rather obvious that the 9/11 commission aimed more to bring closure than to investigate the anomalies surrounding the event. For the dominant media in the US they have largely succeeded. All the more reason why it is important that its failure even to mention these anomalies not go unnoticed. For those who still seek the truth and hope for a serious investigation of the facts, Griffin's careful analysis of the report is essential reading." -- John B. Cobb, Jr., Professor of Theology, Emeritus, Claremont School of Theology

"Through an incisive and carefully documented review, David Ray Griffin skillfully refutes the findings of the 9/11 Commission and questions the official 'bipartisan' account of what happened. He shows how the dramatic events of September 11 were used by the Bush Administration, through media disinformation, to mislead public opinion, with a view to justifying the invasion of Afghanistan and Iraq under the banner of the global 'war on terrorism.'" -- Michel Chossudovsky, Centre for Research on Globalization/University of Ottawa

"Once again, a President of the United States reluctantly appointed a commission to investigate a calamitous event in American history and once again, a commission created more questions than it provided answers. David Ray Griffin's latest book amply explains why the 9/11 Commission can now be placed in the same category as the Warren and Tower Commissions as dissemblers and varnishers of the truth." -- Wayne Madsen, syndicated columnist, investigative journalist

"In this masterful sequel to The New Pearl Harbor, David Ray Griffin unveils a disparity between official 9/11 "spin" and independently researched 9/11 fact so glaring as to suggest the possibility of a constitutional crisis unlike anything our country has ever known. In this new study, as in its predecessor, he simply details the hard, cold evidence that seriously--and alarmingly--challenges the independence, impartiality, and thoroughness of the 9/11 Commission. For anyone serious about combatting terrorism, let alone upholding constitutional democracy, The 9/11 Commission Report: Omissions and Distortions, is a must read." --Burns H. Weston, Bessie Dutton Murray Distinguished Professor of Law Emeritus, The University of Iowa

"This is a painstaking and devastating demolition of the lies transmitted by The 9/11 Commission Report, and also the new lies invented by it in an effort to reconcile the government1s impossible chronologies. Time after time, David Ray Griffin uses credible eyewitness accounts to refute the Report1s methods and allegations, particularly with respect to the stand-down and shoot-down orders issued on that infamous September 11 and the attack on the Pentagon. Those concerned with preserving our Republic in these troubled times should pay particular attention to his focus on the disturbing behavior of the core group who appear on that day to have misdirected the defenses of our country. In the coming national debate over 9/11, Griffin1s book will strengthen the cause of those who believe that the best defense for democracy is not blind fealty to leaders, but the truth."--Peter Dale Scott, author of Drugs, Oil, and War: The United States in Afghanistan, Colombia, and Indochina

This book belongs in every American classroom, home and office. It should substitue the Bible in hotel suites. It should be compulsory reading for college juniors. Buy ten and give to strangers, colleagues and friends!

5 out of 5 stars "Worse" than 'the book many of us both feared and hoped for'..........2007-07-21

It took me months to read The 9/11 Commission Report: Omissions and Distortions--it is so painful. In 2004 I read Griffin's first 9/11 Truth book, The New Pearl Harbor: Disturbing Questions about the Bush Administration and 9/11 and dubbed it "the book many of us both feared and hoped for." The commission report book is "worse"--let me say why.

As horrific as these events were, don't we want to believe the official story? That the attacks of 9/11 were so unprecedented that our federal aviation communications, military defense, and government agencies were totally overwhelmed--unable to respond effectively to prevent or diminish the loss of life and destruction of property with four hijacked airplanes targeting government and economic landmarks within a few short hours. What American would not want to believe this account? As difficult as this story is to accept, surely it is preferable to the alternatives: (1) admitting that our defense system was unable to handle such an onslaught; or (2) coming to understand that the attacks were not "the accident" they appeared to be--i.e. that top government leaders may have been, to a degree yet undetermined, complicit in what happened. I understand why we prefer the "official" story. The problem comes with truth. If enough convincing evidence calls into question this story (which Griffin shows has multiple versions, and which has been used to justify subsequent and disastrous foreign policy), then our national nightmare is far from over. Yet, I vote for truth. I recommend Griffin's book to truth seekers.

While both of Griffin's 9/11 books are painful to read, the book on the commission report is moreso-because it reveals many flaws in the official account and thereby builds a possible worst case scenario. Griffin refers to The 9/11 Commission Report as "the Kean-Zelikow Report" due to the expanded and not impartial role of the commission's executive director, Philip Zelikow. Griffin says, "... the Kean-Zelikow Report, far from lessening my suspicions about official complicity, has served to confirm them." [p. 291] Griffin underscores his bottom line: we need a truly independent investigation now more than ever.

I would like to see David Griffin on 9/11 read by Americans of all persuasions. His careful, detailed research and reasoned analyses (never pushing his view, but rather showing readers where credible evidence leads) will teach every reader facts and overarching considerations he/she had not previously recognized in connection with this historic American and global event.

How can we go forward as a nation without knowing what really happened on 9/11? The victims' families and the American people deserve much better than The 9/11 Commission Report delivered. Read Griffin and demand 9/11 Truth now!

5 out of 5 stars The 9/11 Commission Report: Omissions And Distortions .......2007-01-15

David Grifin's analysis of the Kean-Zelikov bipartisan Report of the events leading up to the highjackings of four aircraft on September 11, 2001, is a "must read" for anyone concerned with the subsequent history of the Bush Administration and the "War on Terror." All may not be as we initially were lead to believe: That fundamental Muslims with the desire to bring down America, plotted a massive terror event that culminated in the plane crashes into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and the fields of Pennsylvania. This conventional wisdom, supported by the media reporting immediately following the catastrophe, and subsequently "documented" by the Kean-Zelikov Report as analyzed in detail by Dr. Griffin is shown to be laced with omissions of fact, distortions of events, and the rewriting of the history leading to and during September 11, 2001.

Dr. Griffin's analysis demonstrates that the "non-partisan" 911 Report is anything but non-partisan. The chief staff person to the committee, Mr. Zelikov, was and is a Republican White House operative who had worked with Condellesa Rice, and who subsequently became a consultant to the Natinal Security Agency. His manipulation of the factual material, his direction of the process toward the pre-concieved conception of the causes of the 9-11 events, and his organization of the material to obscure military and intelligence failures on the part of the US Government is shown by Dr. Griffin to be, if not a complete whitewash of many failures in the US response, at least an inadequate and biased analysis of only some of the available information about the many factors that pre-dated the 9-11 events and followed from them. Dr. Griffin points out the resourcefulness of Mr. Zelikov to obscure factors that might be critical of the Bush Administration, and implies that the conspiracy to highjack planes and bomb America may be wider than the al Quaeda connection.

The text is not a late night page turner. The reader must attend to the facts and compare this text with the original Kean-Zelikov Report if the full value of the information is to be garnered. Spending the effort, however, will yield valuable insight into the workings of the current Administration, the failure of the American media to review what was before thier eyes, and the reluctance of the Republican controlled Congress from 2001 to 2006 to provide the American people with the legislative oversight of the Executive that the Constitution of the United States demands. Dr. Griffen raises more questions than he answers. In so doing, he makes those who read his text aware of the perils we face from the current administration's response.

Excellent book by a man who has researched this subject extensively, and has a wealth of knowledge to impart about the inconsistencies and outright lies propounded by the administration regarding the events of Sept. 11. This book completely demolishes the "official" story of what happened that day, and makes clear that a coverup was and is intended in order to sell the populace on never ending war against phantom terrorists to enrich the corporate interests behind the coverup. Must reading for those interested in the subject.

                                      5 out of 5 stars A Must Read.......2006-12-29

I read this book immediately after reading the 9/11 Report and I highly suggest that others do the same thing. Read the gov't version and then Griffin's book and you'll be left ruefully scratching your head and wondering about the vagaries of democracy and truth seeking today.

This book is indeed a must read. Many reviewers have already extolled the strenghts of this book. One of the things I enjoyed most is that this book is written for a lay audience and will be enjoyed by many. Bravo to a well-researched more accurate version of what happened and what is still happening.

There's plenty of information about the failures, counterproductivity, and untrustworthiness of the Bush administration. And Matthew Rothschild says we do not have to invent conspiracy theories in a misguided attempt to beef up the case against this administration.

He's right. Such theories just sabotage one's credibility. And this article is pretty good at explaining how far from reality the 9/11 conspiracy theories are.
