The best ballet pocket dictionary, I've ever used !.......2005-04-03
I have had ballet studios and educational school for many years. This little unpretencious dictionary has an amazing content. It is full of steps and drawings with the correct ballet terminology, which is carefully explained.
It is a plus that the book tells about french, russian and italian ballet styles. We practice the french style and the dictionary is very valuable for the students and teachers if, there should be any problem.
We keep the dictionary at the ballet studio, and be sure that the students know where to find it.

The Best of Little Nemo in Slumber Land

As Richard Marschall states in his introduction to this well-presented art book, "It might be a stretch to describe McCay as a Surrealist, but he clearly presaged the movement that portrayed fevered thoughts via photographic depictions." This is no surprise to the legions of Winsor McCay's existing admirers. What makes The Best of Little Nemo in Slumberland a real joy are the more than 200 pages of full-color, large-sized reproductions of many of McCay's best pieces. The collection surrounds the reader with Little Nemo's Edenic images of a fantasy paradise. In addition to Marschall's introduction, there are appreciation essays by Maurice Sendak, Ron Goulart, Art Spiegelman, Charles Schulz, Chuck Jones, and Bill Watterson.

Wow!.......1999-11-13
Each (color!)strip is so beautifully mesmerizing. Its the perfect example of what can be accomplished in the comic industry. Windsor McCay was a genius!
This book is a must have for all cartoonists!!!!!.......1999-02-02
This book is an absolute treasure. Every cartoonist should buy and study this book with a magnifying glass for a few hours a week. Winsor McCay is maybe the most dedicated, hard-working cartoonist to date. He was certainly before his time, and he has still carries more weight than most artists of today. His strips are lavish and generous. You can believe that I will be studying this book for years to come.
McCay is Magnificent.......1998-09-06
If one cannot purchase the 6 vol set of the *complete* Little Nemo, this will have to do. (sigh) Any collection of McCay is worth having. All one can do is *cry* over the lack of skill when comparing this with modern strips. It is not impossible to have good story line AND good draftsmanship. Buy it, you will not be dissapointed!
McCay was decades ahead of his time.......1998-01-24
Anyone who's read a history of comic books, comic strips, and other sequential art has heard of Little Nemo, but few have seen it in detail. This is a beautiful collection of Little Nemo strips that demonstrate author Winsor McCay's use of plot, characters, and sequential art in ways that decades later others would be heralded for "pioneering". The strips are beautiful, elegant, witty, and fascinating. A must for any fan of sequential art.

Riding the Emotional Rollercoaster.......2002-09-26
I cried with him and laughed with him through out this book. We also have a child that spent the first few months of her life in NICU. We adopted our daughter and did not know her until the week before she was dismissed from the hospital. From the information that the nurses gave us, we know that she was on one of those rollercoasters the whole time she was in NICU. Reading Mr. Cantrell's book helped me to picture the rollercoaster ride we would of been on if we had the privilege of meeting our daughter sooner than we did. My heart aches when I think of her going through that by herself. We have had many ups and downs with our daughter and her health since she has come home. Mr. Cantrell's honesty about the ups and downs in his faith helped me to know that I am not the only one that can be so strong in my faith one minute and then question God about how much I can endure the next. I thank Mr. Cantrell for his open and honest book on such a hard time in his family's life. I thank him for allowing me to share this experience with his family. I know that no two NICU stays are the same. None the less this allowed me a glimps in the first few months of my daughter's life. I thank him for that glimps.
Another look at "I'm OK, You're Ok".......2002-08-11
We all wonder how we would "act" if faced with the reality of life's potential dark moments. I read this non-stop after just wanting to peruse it for a moment. It is informative factually but, more importantly, it let's you know you are not alone in feeling a range of emotions you might never expect when faced with adversity. It is also a love story even if it had not had a happy ending.
An Unfortunate Tale.......2002-07-12
Althought the book shared a difficult and personal battle against adversity, i unfortunately found it to be dissapointingly weighed down with a dependence on religious faith for the fortunate outcome. Although this is a suitable and sufficient option for some, i personally found it to detract from the book for what it was...a tale of survival against the odds. Uncompelling and light in its narative style and format ... would not recommend to friends in a similar situation. Just one more light-weight text "for the soul".
Honest and hard to put down.......2002-05-28
I read Dail Cantrell's book and at times I found it almost impossible to put down. Cantrell is incredibly honest. Not many of us have the courage to address our most personal doubts and fears and then write about these deep, dark, unspeakable thoughts, particularly when someone else will read them. But the book is also informative, inspirational, and funny. Cantrell told about the day-to-day events that go on in the NICU and about how life somehow goes on even during incredibly stressful times. Sometimes I actually laughed out loud. It's my opinion that the book will provide information, hope, and inspiration for anyone facing prematurity or a child's illness.
Love this book!.......2002-05-25
Equal to the Task is emotionally involving, honest and informational. I had planned to read a little before going to bed, and found myself still reading at 2:30 a.m. Mr. Cantrell uses self-deprecating humor to tell his at first very frightening story of Benjamin's birth and struggle for life. I found out a lot about what one would expect to see in a neonatal unit. I especially liked Mr. Cantrell's references to music and the signifcance they play in our lives. I recommend this book for anyone who wants a good read, knows someone who has been through a similar experience, or might be facing one. It will provide both information, reassurance and hope.

Blood and Vengeance: One Family's Story of the War in Bosnia
ASIN: 0801442648 |
Book Description
"The wars in Bosnia-Herzegovina and in neighboring Croatia and Kosovo grabbed the attention of the western world not only because of their ferocity and their geographic location, but also because of their timing. This violence erupted at the exact moment when the cold war confrontation was drawing to a close, when westerners were claiming their liberal values as triumphant, in a country that had only a few years earlier been seen as very well placed to join the west. In trying to account for this outburst, most western journalists, academics, and policymakers have resorted to the language of the premodern: tribalism, ethnic hatreds, cultural inadequacy, irrationality; in short, the Balkans as the antithesis of the modern west. Yet one of the most striking aspects of the wars in Yugoslavia is the extent to which the images purveyed in the western press and in much of the academic literature are so at odds with evidence from on the ground."from Chapter 1
V. P. Gagnon Jr. believes that the Yugoslav wars of the 1990s were reactionary moves designed to thwart populations that were threatening the existing structures of political and economic power. He begins with facts at odds with the essentialist view of ethnic identity, such as high intermarriage rates and the very high percentage of draft-resisters. These statistics do not comport comfortably with the notion that these wars were the result of ancient blood hatreds or of nationalist leaders using ethnicity to mobilize people into conflict.
Yugoslavia in the late 1980s was, in Gagnon's view, on the verge of large-scale sociopolitical and economic change. He shows that political and economic elites in Belgrade and Zagreb first created and then manipulated violent conflict along ethnic lines as a way to short-circuit the dynamics of political change. This strategy of violence was thus a means for these threatened elites to demobilize the population. Gagnon's noteworthy and rather controversial argument provides us with a substantially new way of understanding the politics of ethnicity.

Check the facts at the door..........2007-04-27
I agree with BB. This book requires the reader to agree that black is white, yes means no...there are so many occasions in which the author offers fundamental untruths in order to demonstrate his points that one ends up throwing ones hands in the air in disgust. It is telling that the book one an award from the APSA -- an organization of non-experts. Experts who read this book will be left exasperated. Gagnon has a certain cachet, though, so he probably won't get the reviews he deserves. Bad ones, that is.
Nonsense.......2007-02-21
This ideas in this book are pure nonsense. Having lived over there both before, during and after the war, I can honestly say that, Prof Gagnon doesn't have a clue what he is talking about. While Croats, Serbs and Bosnians will never agree on who really is to blame for the war, what caused it, what really happened and will in general each attribute the blame on one (or both) of the other ethnical groups, they will all agree that the thesis presented in the book has nothing to do with reality. Did the politicians manipulate the masses? Sure; could the war have been avoided? Maybe, maybe not. Does it have to do anything with the ideas Prof Gagnon is presenting? Not really.
Thesis presented in the book can best be described as wishful thinking; one morning the esteemed profesor woke up with *the* greatest idea that would both explain the behavior of human masses as well as provide an unified framework for explaining all the wars in the world and similar phonomena such as 9/11 terrorist attacks (getting all the fame and glory that comes with such ideas), and then set out to find the facts that support this product of pure genius. The only problem is, the idea has nothing to do with reality.
The only other possible explanation for the book that I can think of is that the esteemed professor is trying to achive some other political agenda which would make it even more pathetic. That would certainly explain why he is trying to connect two completely separate and unrelated events such as war in former Yugoslavia and terrorist attacks on world trade center.
All that being said, with all the great books written in the world every year, it seems like a crime against humanity to waste your money on nonsense like this book.
Straight-forward if Somewhat Repetitive.......2006-04-12
V.P. Gagnon present a refreshing analysis of the breakdown of state structures in Yugoslavia and the rise of so-called "ethnic wars". It is a much needed diversion from the heavily skewed and highly inaccurate appraisals of Balkan societies as portrayed by Robert Kaplan's Balkan Ghosts or even Mischa Glenny's the Fall of Yugoslavia, in which the jouralist-writers portray the entire region as a place awash in ancient hatreds, pre-modern superstitions, and primitive tribal communities.
One strong element of Gagnon's book is his clarity. If you come away from this book not knowing that the conflicts in Croatia and Serbia were the result of elites in power purposefully "demobilizing" the greater population by constructing images of external threats and provoking violence along ethnic lines so as to shift political discourse away from issues of reformist change, you were making a concerted effort to not pay attention, as Gagnon repeats this claim on almost every fifth page. His argument is supported by social scientific polling data taken in Croatia and Serbia at the time, which indicates a continued trend towards favoring democratic development and multi-ethnic communities, even during the most violent periods of inter-ethnic warfare.
However there are some apparent weaknesses of his work. The most important is that while he alludes to elites resorting to casting the "other" as aggressive and violent against one's own "innocent" community, Gagnon does not explain why the images and historical references chosen were used towards the larger audience. In other words, elites didn't simply make up stories and myths of past aggressions; they had to, at the very least, create images of the "other" that their own communities could recognize, identify with, and accept. Likening Tudjman's HDZ to the Ustasha regime of WWII could only work if 1) Serbs still collective remember that era as a time of extreme ethnic oppression against them, 2) Some members of the HDZ actually likened themselves to the Ustashas and 3) Tudjman did not openly play into extreme elements of Croat nationalism. Likewise, the Serbs could not have been cast as aggressors if extremist elements under Milosevic's control did not seek to carve out territorial elements within Croatia. In short, Gagnon's argument is valid, but dismisses historical memory too quickly - something he argues needs to be taken into account from anthopology and culturalist studies of the region.
Finally, he attempts to liken his elite demobilization model in the last few pages to U.S. Cold War policy and the policies of the Bush Administration following September 11. While there are some parallels that could be found in sidelining any opposition to the Bush Administration's positions, the fundamental difference is that attempts at elite demobilization were made AFTER the 9/11 attacks, and were not a pre-planned nor pre-orchestrated plan before any hostilities as was argued in Serbia and Croatia. In addition, the opposition, did not, and has not, presented an opposition platform that voters might gravitate towards, something the Croat and Serbian opposition parties did have. Moreover, he ignores the rather lopsided positions taken by the Clinton Administration's policy of "Good Croats" and "Bad Serb" lumping that was so prominent in the foreign policies of both Warren Christopher and Madeline Albright, blaming Serbia for the same strategies of political manipulation that an exonerated Croatia similarly practised.
However, these are only small problems Gagnon has, but this does not take away from the overall clarity and specifics of his work in the former Yugoslavia, and he should be commended for providing an intelligent and honest assessment of a series of events that have been so horribly misunderstood in Western medias.
the Yugoslav wars were not inevitable.......2005-08-20
Gagnon's argument can be understood, in part, as explaining that the Yugoslav wars of the 90s were not inevitable. He suggests that to some extent, the wars were deliberately due to various politicians stirring up groups within Yugoslavia. Where, alas, these groups were often demarcated on ethnic grounds, primarily as Serbs, Croats and Bosnians.
His thesis is plausible. That Milosevic and others sought to retain or increase the influence they had under Communism, and turned to tribalism. But the relative ease with which they accomplished this can be unsettling to an American or western European reader. Certainly for the latter reader, the searing experiences of two World Wars has led to very few to want to war over territorial disputes, no matter, and especially if these dated back centuries.
A start.......2005-06-28
Gagnon's book is an essential source of information on and serious analysis of the role of elites in manufacturing nationalist "hysteria" in Serbia and Croatia. The only major flaw is the book's untested assumption that Yugoslavia was poised for a smooth transition to liberal democracy, which was derailed by a nationalist "de-mobilization". This claim seems facile in lieu of a serious analysis of what exactly it was that nationalists were trying to suppress. Would Yugoslavia be merely another Poland today if the nationalists had failed, or something radically different? Writers like Gagnon tend to overlook that Yugoslavia was never a communist bureaucracy in the tradition of the Soviet puppet states, but an experiment moderating elements of socialism with a relatively open market. It is too easy to chalk it up as just another repressive communist authoritarian structure which bred a popular movement for liberalization. Nonetheless, Gagnon is to be commended for moving far beyond the typical "ancient ethnic hatred" explanation for conflict in the Balkans.

Colin Bundy and attacking the vulnerable.......2005-11-12
Bundy tends to attack the vulnerable: black workers, librarians, Muslim students:
ACTION ALERT: Demand end to SOAS student witch hunt
IHRC calls on all campaigners to contact Colin Bundy, Principal at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), and demand he retract a reprimand given to student Nasser Amin.
-------------------------------------
Islamic Human Rights Commission
-------------------------------------
ACTION ALERT: IHRC demand end to SOAS student witch hunt
SOAS masters student Nasser Amin wrote an article in his university paper defending the right of Palestinians to resist occupation by violence. After the publication of the article Amin became the focus of a bitter witch hunt which resulted in him being reprimanded by SOAS University. The reprimand was published on the university's official website without even informing Amin.
His article `when only violence will do' was written in response to one published by Hamza Yusuf which said, in effect that Muslims in Palestine should `turn the other cheek' when facing Israeli violent antagonism.
The Article was not extreme nor even unusual, and similar arguments have been used and promoted in academia e.g. by Professor Michael Neuman. The article was set in a context of open debate about the moral rights and wrongs of Palestinian resistance, and SOAS's response is at best bizarre.
Amin has received death threats on Zionist websites, and calls have been made in parliament for action to be taken against him. This is not only unacceptable but has been fuelled by SOAS's failure to defend academic freedom and moral discussion.
The incident is also being used by pro Israeli groups to justify a need for incitement to religious hatred legislation, clearly showing how this law, if passed, will be used against those criticizing the aggressive actions of the State of Israel.
Instead of defending Amin from this witch hunt SOAS announced they had issued him a public reprimand. They did not follow correct procedure or allow him an opportunity to defend himself; in fact, they did not even bother to contact him.
This is yet another example of Zionists bullying anyone who speaks out against Israeli oppression and institutions buckling for fear of being labeled anti-Semitic
IHRC calls upon campaigners to contact Colin Bundy, principal at SOAS and demand:
1) An explanation as to why Amin was issued a formal reprimand without informing him or giving him a chance to defend himself against the allegations.
2) He retracts this reprimand.

Disappointing.......2001-02-05
As an ecology student, I expected a sound scientifically written ecology and management tool. Although some selected studies were quoted, this book appears to have a political agenda. Every section has a "and here's why doves should be hunted" swing which I found to be annoying.
