Book Description

Awesome in its vastness and beauty, the Grand Canyon is unique in all the world. And all the world wants to visit there-which can lead to delay, discomfort, and disappointment for the uninformed who arrive at the same time as everyone else.

Those armed with The Grand Canyon Handbook, however, will be wise to all the tricks for having the best possible time at the park. They'll know when to go, what to bring, what to see, and how to see it. They'll be properly equipped for a safe visit. They'll have a matchless grasp of all the facts, from how the canyon was formed down to the closest place to rent camping gear. There's even a table of sunrise/sunset times, so readers won't miss any meteorological light shows unless they want to.

This detailed and engaging guide, narrated by a seasoned cartoon ranger named Jack, includes illuminating notes on the park's flora, fauna, history, and future prospects. The question-and-answer format gives the facts without a lot of searching. A quick-reference section offers, among other things, a telephone directory, guide to area resources, backpacker's checklist, lists of outfitters and transportation companies, and an overview of regional conservation and educational programs.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource.......2007-01-10

Book is excellent. It's full of great tips and information, and I really liked the format and informal style of the book. I have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone thinking of traveling to the Grand Canyon.

4 out of 5 stars Paradise Found on a Grand canyon Tour.......2004-07-07

The Grand Canyon Handbook: an Insider's Guide to the Park, was quite helpful. I searched all over the internet for grand canyon tour information, and i must say paradisefoundtours.com was by far the best. I signed up for a grand canyon tour and a hoover dam tour with them. The book and the website went hand in hand. We had a great time!

5 out of 5 stars It's not just a big hole in the ground.......2002-11-18

The way the books of this series work is that they took a guide for new rangers in Yosemite with the 100 or so most frequently asked questions, and wrote their own answers for each park. So in each book the questions are very similar but the answers might be very different.

It's a great format because it makes for easy reading beforehand, but it's also quick as a reference when you're there because they're arranged in an intelligent order. There's also a huge reference section at the end with lists, copies of permit forms, and so forth. So the thing to do is read the FAQ before you leave but bring the book and refer to it once you're there.

Before I went I really wasn't sure how long we'd want to stay or even if there was really anything to do other than look at the canyon. As it turns out there's a ton of things to do - ruins, great hiking, sunsets, stargazing, and we spent a lot more time there than I would have thought. Without this book either I wouldn't have realized this stuff existed (the park service doesn't exactly promote the nearby native ruins, but they're cool) or I would have scheduled way too little time.

This guide provides an interesting overview to the Grand Canyon. Parents will find this guide useful in sharing this awesome wonder with their children. However, this guide falls short as a vacation planner.

Book Description

Illustrated throughout, this history-plus-craft book describes the work, tools, and technique of the blacksmith--and how to set up a blacksmith shop yourself. Filled with absorbing information, The Blacksmith: Ironworker and Farrier pays fine tribute to the skill and ingenuity of this versatile nineteenth-century American craftsman. The roles of the blacksmith as hardware maker, farrier, and village handyman are vividly portrayed in the lively text and exceptional illustrations. Methods for fullering, upsetting, and welding wrought iron are clearly explained, as well as the construction of latches, ice tongs, chains, and a wealth of iron fittings. Aldren Watson's chapters include "Wrought Iron: Its Properties and Manufacture," "The Blacksmith Shop and Forge Fire," "Working at the Forge," "Hardware and Harness," "Shoeing a Horse," "Wagons, Buggies, and Sleds," and "The Blacksmith in His World." For those who would like a forge and bellows of their own, there are suggestions for laying out a blacksmith shop and constructing a leather bellows and forge. Watson's book is an important record and a valuable source for anyone interested in this part of American industry.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent starter book.......2001-12-09

This is the first Blacksmith book that I have purchased, and I havne't been disapointed. In fact I am pleased that I bought the book every time I go back and open it up (which I do quite a bit). It's rich with detailed illustrations by the author, and full of historical information about the 19th century smith, some of which is presented in a story-like fashion.
I have used this book for references, ideas for projects, and of course building a forge. The chapters on building a forge and a leather lung bellows is fantastic and better than most books on the subject. This is worth it, definately.

5 out of 5 stars The Blacksmith: Ironworker & Farrier by Aldren A Watson.......2001-04-17

Having purchased other titles by this Author, I was not disappointed when I opened this book. The illustrations were excellent, and the author presents the reader with a good description of the various skills of the Blacksmith. The Farrier information was very interesting as well as the Iron Working subjects, my main reason for buying this book was the Blacksmithing, and this book did not let me down. I have other Blacksmithing books that go into more details about techniques, but anyone who may have even the slightest interst in this trade of Blacksmithing either as a Profession or a hobby, will not be disappointed with the purchase of this book. It would be a fine addition to any Metal Working library.

      Book Description

He's Québec's best-known ethnic minority superhero. He spent 22 weeks on the Montreal Gazette bestseller list and received rave reviews from everybody from La Presse to The Toronto Star to Geist. He's Angloman, and he's back for another parody-rich romp through the surrealistic politics of La Belle Province and the country as a whole!

Barrel-chested champion of bilingualism and tolerance, always well-meaning but thick as a brick, Angloman is joined by his partners in parody Poutinette and West Island Lad, and a crew of political adventurers like Power Chin, Canada!man and Le Capitaine Souche.

In Angloman 2 there's a whole new cast of post-referendum personalities, including the all-powerful, all-knowing Ethnoman, who will, of course, stop at nothing to destroy the French fact in Québec! Can Capitaine Souche stop this mad genius and his super-powerful ethnic ballot box of doom, or will he finally face the one foe he simply cannot defeat? Can Matzohgirl, teenage super-powered defender of Côte Saint Luc, escape the insatiable clutches of La régie? Even tougher, can West Island Lad get her to go out with him? What will become of Blocman now that he's no longer bloced? Will Partition Man divide Québec?

And where have all the anglos gone? Are they really leaving Québec of their own free will, or is something else afoot? Will Angloman, Poutinette and West Island Lad survive their encounter with the malevolent Torontorg, and—more important—will Toronto survive its encounter with them?

      Book Description

Being saddled with a terrible supervisor can turn even the best job into a nightmare. Unfortunately, not every boss is the great symbol of managerial perfection one would hope for. In fact, more people than not consider themselves stuck with a "bad boss." But short of remaining miserable or quitting a job, what can be done about it? "A Survival Guide for Working with Bad Bosses" provides readers with savvy, practical advice for coping with managers and supervisors who are mean, incompetent, unethical, and worse. The book includes powerful strategies for not only working with -- but thriving under -- such bad boss types as: * The Great Betrayers -- how to defend yourself against a corporate backstabber * The Know-Nothing Bosses -- what to do when a boss is clueless * The Bad Communicators -- how to respond when a boss is consistently unclear Whether a boss is high-strung, incompetent, or a power-mad tyrant, this book has the solution.

4 out of 5 stars A Survival Guide for Working With Bad Bosses: Dealing With Bullies, Idiots, Back-stabbers, And Other Managers from Hell.......2007-07-15

If you've ever had a job, you've likely come across a bad boss. Bad bosses come in all types from the no-boss and the party planner through the scatterboss and the promises, promises boss to the overloader and the control freak. A Survival Guide for Working with Bad Bosses describes mangers from hell complete with stories of real life versions of these monsters. Each section also includes a What Should the Employee Do section which outlines a number of possible solutions to the problem. A summary called Today's Take-Aways end each section.

A Survival Guide for Working with Bad Bosses is an excellent resource for employees stuck in a difficult situation. Not only does the book remind the reader that he or she is not the only one to have such circumstances but also gives them options which are often difficult to think of when stuck in the middle of a problem. Bosses may also want to read this book as often bad bosses don't even realize their problematic behaviour.

5 out of 5 stars Survival at the office.......2007-04-02

It is a great feeling to know that you are not alone in the jungles of the workplace. Especially when the advice comes from an expert...You learn not to kill the "bad bosses" and how to deal with the problem zone with kindness without burning your fingers. Yet, I still hope someday any kind of pills will be discovered to terminate such "bad bosses" and we will live happily ever after.

1 out of 5 stars Don't buy bad workplace advice!.......2007-02-05

I used the advice in this book to deal with a bad boss and the toxic work environment that was created. In compliance with Amazon's review policy I won't reveal it here. In my case the end result is hostility, harassment, and retaliation. What Scott apparently forgets is that these "bad bosses" will regard ANY challenge (even those advocated in her book) as a personal threat and will use the assets at his disposal (i.e., company assets, discipline process) for retribution AGAINST the assertive employee. And since he IS the boss, he has the full backing of the company, regardless of legality, ethics, or motives. These tactics may work with rational, well adjusted supervisors in employee-focused companies, but in my experience pathological bosses are the rule and not the exception.

Do yourself a favor. If you have a bad boss, find a better job and DON'T buy this book or use the advice contained therein.

      2 out of 5 stars Unhelpful.......2006-09-17

I thought this book was filled with cliches and did not find it helpful.

2 out of 5 stars Keep looking this one falls short.......2006-03-26

I was rather disapointed in this book. It appears that Ms. Graham Scott's prefered method of dealing with bad bosses is just to put up with them and keep things as status quo hoping it will all work out in the end. Pretty lame advise in my opinion. I am looking for a book that actually helps me solve problems not just put up with them.

This is the stuff that makes Gary Larson and Jerry Seinfeld go "man, that was funny". If you HONESTLY think this book is for self-help, you need to delve deeper into the "self help" section. If you don't get the cartoons, don't feel bad. Many of you won't. (You don't get the Far Side half the time either, do you?)
For the sick and twisted individuals out there, this book is definitely for you. I was saddened to see this book out of print and so hard to find. I've had my copy for years, and it has lost a couple of pages (the one with the Sausage Gravy Springs cartoon, good stuff)

1 out of 5 stars NOT MUCH WORTH IT.......2000-03-26

IF YOUR LOOKING FOR ANY HELP FROM THIS BOOK, FOGET IT. IT WAS NOT WHAT I EXPECTED.NOT ONE PIECE OF ADVICE, EVEN OBSCURE ADVICE. SECONDLY,IT IS WRITTEN IN CARTOON FORM.BUT,THE CARTOONS ARE IN NO WAY FUNNY! SOME MAKE LITTLE SENSE AT ALL.AND,REFERENCE TO OBSCURE PLANETS IS PLENTIFUL, BUT NOT FUNNY AT ALL.THIS BOOK WAS LISTED WITH A GROUP OF VERY SERIOUS BOOKS ON THIS SORT OF SUBJECT,WHEN I DID A SEARCH. MAYBE AMAZON.COM SHOULD DO A BETTER JOB OF GROUPING THE BOOKS THEY SELL.

This book is WONDERFUL. Irreverent, sick and so funny you have to read it in small doses. I wish it was more readily available. Definitely as good as the Far Side!

      5 out of 5 stars Pure Genius.......2000-02-02

It's simple. This is the funniest book in history. I doubled over in pain from laughing. Jim Benton is a sick, sick man who was blessed by God.

5 out of 5 stars The funniest book I have EVER read!.......1999-09-06

This book is so good you'll wonder why it is so hard to find. When you see it, it'll smack you in the face (in a good way!) I had to xerox the entire book twice in order to pass on copies to my friends. It is a must buy! -but not for the prudish, easily offended, or just plain clueless.

        Book Description

Leopards in the Temple explores the ways in which exposure to electronic environments influences cultural interpretations of self and otherness in contemporary American life. Philosophers of technology such as Jacques Ellul, Martin Heidegger, Herbert Marcuse, Hans Jonas, and Hubert Dreyfus have taken various approaches to interpreting the consequences of technological revolutions. With the exception of Jonas and Heidegger, critiques of technology's influence at the ontological level are relatively rare. Addressing this issue, Steven Carter investigates the ways in which technology, media entertainment, and advertising are in the process of recycling metaphysical values in postmodern society. In this revised edition, he focuses specifically on marginality as a world wide literary phenomenon. Thought provoking and original, "Leopards in the Temple" represents a timely contribution to the study of technology, popular culture, and postmodern studies.

5 out of 5 stars Review by Professor Arthur J. Spring.......1999-09-27

Steven Carter's wide-ranging mind and unsettling voice intelligently confront incipient tendencies in popular culture that threaten our national sense of who we are and who we ought to be. In a number of his essays analyzing technology's usurpation of the biological, Carter becomes a contemporary Tieresias, calling us to understand that some of the most comfortable and pleasing of our entertainments have a dark and destructive underside....Such a voice ought to be heard.

5 out of 5 stars A brilliant insight on postmodern culture and literature.......1998-02-17

I have sat through three different lecture courses from Dr. Carter, and his ideas, lucid and insightful, are found in this book. Anyone interested in postmodern theory, from quantum physics to chaos theory to Las Vegas as an allegory for all of contemporary society, should read this book. It has a hefty pricetag, but it is well worth the dough for scholars of literature or postmodern theory. It is worth the dough for those that are not scholars, as well, since it will make you wish you were a scholar of literature and postmodern theory. A big-brained, but quite good, read.

          Book Description

This book offers solutions to the problems of recruitment, education, and training of cataloging librarians. Sheila S. Intner and Janet Swan Hill have compiled a series of informative essays that provide creative solutions on a wide array of issues in the library cataloging field. Book Description

A Carnegie Corporation Initiative: Summarizing a Decade of Progress in Early Education

"As a mother of three, I am acutely aware of how much a baby learns during the earliest years and how much that affects his or her development. What Kids Need offers parents and policy makers alike insights into the research and discoveries of the past ten years. This book is not only readable; it is encouraging to anyone who cares about America's future: its children."
              —Judy Woodruff

What Kids Need is a compelling case for making the welfare of all our youngest a national priority; it is essential reading for those who work with children and for parents who recognize that the future of their children is profoundly connected to the well-being of all youth in America.

Drawing on a decade of research on children up to the age of ten by top experts, What Kids Need challenges the belief that early risk factors and problems severely constrain a child's life chances. This groundbreaking and encouraging book explores the range of effective parenting techniques and social supports, programs, and policies that really work.

While politicians, parents, and educators across the political spectrum call for improving the lives of American children, What Kids Need lays the groundwork for bringing this goal within our reach. Can we put to use our knowledge—about how children develop, how they acquire the skills and concepts needed for success, and how families, communities, and schools can support their healthy development—so that all American children can thrive?

For over a decade, the Carnegie Foundation has funded research on the needs of children and has been at the forefront of the early education movement. The foundation promotes programs and policies that better the lives of families with young children and seeks to broaden public interest in their future.

4 out of 5 stars "Slim" biography of a brilliant soldier.......2003-01-21

William J. Slim was an interesting soldier. He served for forty years in the British and Indian armies, rose to be a field marshal, served as governor general of Australia, and wrote what is considered to be one of the best memoirs to come out of the war, certainly among the best written by a senior officer. All of this, and many who read about World War II have never heard of him.

Slim was born the son of an unsuccessful businessman from Birmingham. His father sold wholesale hardware, and went bankrupt when Slim was in his teens, prompting the young man to look for a job that would afford him a paycheck for little outlay. He joined an army officer training course at Birmingham University (somehow without being a student of that institution, and neat trick) and when World War I started, he was mustered into the army as a lieutenant, and sent off to war.

He served first in Gallipoli, then Mesapotamia (later known as Iraq) and when the war ended, joined the Indian army, serving mostly with Gurkha regiments. By the mid-thirties, he'd seen enough service that when the war started he soon bounced up to corps command, and was instrumental in the retreat of the British army from Burma. The first offensive back into the country (the Arakan offensive) almost got Slim sacked, but someone perceptively relieved his senior instead, and he got the man's job. He fought, and won, the battles of Kohima-Imphal, and later Meiktila, and reconquered Burma. Afterwards, he was again almost sacked, instead promoted Field Marshal, and made Chief of the Imperial General Staff over the objections of his predecessor, Montgomery. From there, with some diversions, he became the Governor General of Australia, which he did almost until his death.

Lewin is a competent writer, but no master of prose or anything, and he concentrates on Slim and his career. There's little information on Slim's family, such as when his parents died, and almost nothing on his silblings. The author does spend a little bit of time on Mrs. Slim, and the children, but not much. There are some amusing anecdotes (especially concerning his time as Governor General of Australia) and a few myths get put to rest. The most prevalent one is the story that Slim enlisted in the army as a private and was eventually promoted all the way to Field Marshal. This is shown to be just not true, unfortunately: he joined the army through an officer's training course, much like the American ROTC.

The middle part of the book covers the war in Burma, and does a good job of it. The principle issue in a book dealing with Burma is whether you come down on the side of Orde Wingate and the Chindits, or against them. Wingate was a strange, fanatical, brilliant, annoying soldier who formed the Chindits, a unit of light infantry that fought in the jungle behind Japanese lines, supplied by air. Slim, and many soldiers in the conventional army, thought Wingate heedless of difficulties, and unscrupulous, to say the least, while his defenders think he won the war in Burma, and despise those who tried to "hold Wingate back." Lewin comes down gently on the side of Slim, as you might expect, but carefully lets you know how deceitful and devious Wingate could be when he wanted something.

Altogether, while this isn't a masterful biography, it is a good book and a worthy tribute to a wonderful soldier.

              5 out of 5 stars None Finer.......2002-02-19

This book concisely tells the story of an indomitable, brilliant in a practical way, yet wonderfully human warrior. It is a must read for anyone who wants to find out about the embodiment of leadership.

I am a great admirer of Field Marshal the Viscount Slim, who in my opinion was the finest general officer of the war anywhere in any army. He molded the magnificent British 14th Army and led it in a victorious campaign against an implacable, often fanatical enemy, performing the impossible against insurmountable odds.

It is interesting to speculate on how differently Slim would have handled matters had he been in command of the British-Canadian forces on D-Day instead of Montgomery. Slim, who was accustomed to having to get along on a shoestring, but who also moved boldly and decisively whenever opportunity presented itself, would almost certainly have taken Caen on D-Day given all the men, munitions and air power which Monty possessed. That achievement alone would have shortened the war.

On the other hand, I don't believe Monty would have fared well in Burma. He was far too cautious and always refused battle until he had amassed overwhelming superiority in manpower and munitions. I doubt he'd have ever gotten round to attacking the Japanese given the threadbare logistical situation in India and Burma.

4 out of 5 stars An outstanding account of the life of William Slim........1999-10-10

Read in conjunction with William Slim's "Defeat into Victory", Lewin provides a superb appreciation of the forgotten WW2 battles in Burma and the life and times of Britain's outstanding Army commander of the 20th century. A splendid portrait of the soldier, general, proconsul and man. A must read for any serious student of 20th century warfare.

                  Book Description

“Dr. GeigerÂ's research proposes innovative and practical responses to the Â`cost warÂ' fought by government organizations struggling with lower budget levels. His sustained research contributions into the measurement and management of cost in government organizations promise to improve governmentÂ's mission effectiveness by improving its mission efficiency.”—Association of Government Accountants

As the United States moves from Cold War to Cost War, the management of cost has greatly increased in importance. In fact, the greatest threat today to the strength of the nation may be poor management of the limited remaining resources.

Winning the Cost War documents a new doctrine of cost management developed from battlefield management, one of managementÂ's oldest applications. Dale Geiger defines and illustrates new ideas for everything from managerial cost accounting to analysis and accountability.

“ Winning the Cost War has moved managerial costing from being a secondary chore to a framework for success in todayÂ's environment. A must-read for agency and corporate leaders who need to adopt battlefield instincts of strategy and tactics and apply them in the new fiscal war.”—Ward Melhuish, partner, PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP
