Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book of Patterns.......2007-02-22

The patterns in this book are fantastic - a great book for designers of all types. My only wish is that it came with a CD ROM of the patterns.

3 out of 5 stars Good material, bad presentation.......2007-02-16

The information is a great database for packaging design, but, it comes in a very thin paper. As you use, handle it, you'll feel as if your book is melting in your hands. And you'll miss a CD-ROM with the patterns, in a vetorial format. I have no idea why they didn't provide that.

5 out of 5 stars A monster of a book!.......2007-01-24

"The Packaging Designer's Book of Patterns", currently in this newly revised third edition, is a massive collection of cardboard and corrugated board packaging designs. The book has a small introduction to these materials, highlighting the basic principles behind scoring and die-cutting, plus some information on the common printing processes available for folding carton and some comparison charts between the materials. There is a chapter (mostly in diagram form) about closures and corner locks, which could perhaps benefit from some extra (textual) aids, but it serves its basic purpose. The book chapters are organized by packaging type (Folding Carton, Set-up Paper Boxes, Corrugated Containers and Point-of-Purchase Displays), with various designs of cartons, tubes, trays, multi-packs, point-of-purchase displays, shipping containers, etc. Each design features both the pattern and assembled forms, but there is little or no accessory information to complement them (the author states that this is intentional, not to "stifle the creative process", but as he himself states, many people have asked for this, so why not give the people what they want? Maybe a fourth edition will correct this). There is practically a design for every use imaginable, and you can surely adapt the designs to other purposes as well. Supposedly, these designs are ready to be scanned or photocopied (be aware that some of the designs are patented), but you will probably find this very difficult without damaging the book's spine, as many of the graphics are too close to the inner margin and will most likely suffer distortion if scanned/photocopied. To make matters worse, the paper used for the pages is also incredibly thin for a book of this size and at times, even with mere handling, I am genuinely afraid of making a tear in them. Whether you are a hobbyist looking for functional packaging patterns, a student trying to learn from practical examples or a designer looking for inspiration, this book will most definitely be of use.

5 out of 5 stars Most Complete.......2007-01-04

The Packaging Designer's book of Patterns is the most comprehensive book of packaging patterns available. It is well written with excellent explanations covering all of the main types of packaging, with technical information that every beginning designer should have. I purchased the book as a resource for my Production for Graphic Design class and recommend it as an essential resource to my students and for every graphic designer.

4 out of 5 stars A wonderful design book for beginners.......2006-11-10

I went through a lot of design books. This one is definity a great book for a starter. It has a lot basic designs as well as some interesting design sturctures. Great book to have for the price.

              Book Description

THE GOSSAMER EYE Winner of the 2003 Bram Stoker Award for Superior Achievement in the Poetry Collection category! THE GOSSAMER EYE is a book of poetry, and some fiction, too, by a new breed of wordsmiths. Mark McLaughlin, Rain Graves and David Niall Wilson-the three authors represented in this collection-write in numerous speculative genres, with an emphasis on horror and dark fantasy. They give readings of their work at conventions and other literary venues, and are active in various national writers' groups. Their fiction often appears in major anthologies, but they haven't forgotten that poetry is an important part of their creative lives. Their writings breathe new life into the world of dark verse. They prove that the poetry of the macabre can be much more than just the silken, sad rustling of purple curtains. They explore many new avenues of expression-with wit, humor, anger, and always, passion. The stories in The Gossamer Eye range from very dark and macabre to humorous and quirky to absolutely bizarre. You'll meet a cross dresser who impersonates Marilyn and his friend Ziggy, a Bowie impersonator; witness "The Fall of the House of Escher"; and be introduced to 13 of Frankenstein's monster's various parts-individually. This is a reading experience unlike any other! So try looking at the night sky through THE GOSSAMER EYE, and you'll see visions and wonders that you never knew existed.

              Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Little, Green, Different.......2002-11-09

This book is definately different - each author seems to have their own voice, and from section to section there is something to gain from each. McLaughlin is very humorous in his approach, Graves is very dark and disturbing yet graceful, where Wilson seems to mellow them both with a laid back, depth like fine wine, almost romantic. I've never read this kind of poetry before and I have to say I was skeptical looking at the package -I noticed some typos the editors didn't catch and there was no table of contents, but the words speak for themselves. I hope there will be a sequel, or something further from these authors.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent collection!.......2002-10-31

The Gossamer Eye is one of those books that deserves more than one reading. There is simply so much between the covers that, on any given day or mood, you can randonly turn to a page and start and be enthralled by what you find. I don't normally read poetry, but some of the lines/verses were so witty and so imaginative that I found myself smiling as I read. I can see myself turning again and again, for entertainment and inspiration, to this book.

A sequel of sorts to The Maestro Myth: Great Conductors in Pursuit of Power, Who Killed Classical Music? continues British author and critic Norman Lebrecht's version of the saga of how presenting classical music evolved from the (at least ostensible) nurturing of art into a brutal and fairly sleazy business. Lebrecht finds plenty of heads on which to heap the blame, and more than a few minor deities are toppled from their thrones. He's not always altogether accurate in the small details, but he's eminently readable and he's got the big picture dead on. Like its predecessor, this is a must read for anyone concerned about the future of classical music.

                Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent writer makes sense of chaotic field.......2006-02-05

Behind the media hype surrounding this or that performance or artist lie byzantine machinations. Kingmakers jockeying for position. Sexual politics. Mean actions taken by smallminded people temporarily in power. Some of mediocre talent are practically beatified while others with extraordinary gifts seem to wither away almost unnoticed. Sometimes it's a question of whose side the critics are on at any given moment or who has gotten more press--or even who requires fewer retakes in the recording studio, since that means the production will cost less. Lebrecht tells you all about the backroom ugliness that helps to create the uneven playing field that serious musicians find such an impediment to their survival. Although it requires some background from the reader, this book is a must-read for everyone interested in classical music!

2 out of 5 stars Difficult to Follow Presentation.......2004-02-10

Trying to indoctrinate oneself to the classical music world is difficult and trying. First there is the language and jargon associated with any field. Second there is the task of attempting to construct a workable historical chronology that will aid in understanding the gamut of the field. Third combining all of this with the modern classical state.

Thinking this book might aid has been a disappointment. It is overly wordy and doesn't flow and transition well. Detail after detail likely weave a fascinating story to insiders but as a true outsider trying to peer in, this book fogs rather than clears the air.

While he suggests managers, maestros and corporate involvement among other factors, it isn't tied together with any clarity or convincing hypothesis testing that I could follow. Again, in fairness maybe it is just a matter of not relating to the writer's style and the foreigness of the vocab, but if classical music is going to interest more outsiders like me, shouldn't this be a goal? This aloofness and cavalier attitude is definitely a barrier to many.

Frustrated, but still pursuing obtaining some insights into this struggling arts area which should survive and thrive.

5 out of 5 stars Read the Answers.......2003-08-22

Here is the one book that needs to be read by anyone genuinely
curious about what has caused the decline in interest in classical music worldwide.
The situation is probably worse in the US than other places, but
there are world-wide trends at work, and this author explores
all the causes. Not only does he explore those causes in our
own time, he has reseached the history of the recording industry
to such an extent, you feel at times like you are reading a
scholarly publication. Then at other times, where the author
actually names some of the names who have caused the decline
of classical music and who cause this type music to be held in
contempt by many, and abandoned by most others, you have the feel of reading a supermarket tabloid.
The writer has researched all the pioneers in recording and radio, and he has seemingly interviewed all survivors of that
era, as well as most participants in the current music scene,
and there doesn't appear to be a stone unturned in his work.
Many of the names will be unfamiliar to most readers, but the
writer documents their contribution to both the rise and decline
                of classical music.
And, as said, he actually names the names of some of the individual "stars" who have so abused the system, and the public
trust, we have to wonder who in the world continues supporting
such grasping, selfish, egomanical performers and agents, as
well as some of the corporate owners and sponsors. He even at
one point names the world-famous conductor who apparently abuses
children in his travels, and it's a wonder such a man can even
cross international borders. Such is the power of stardom, even
in the world of classical music.
As you can see, there are a multitude of causes for the decline
of classical music, and this writer names them all.
There is very little hope for the continuation of the presentaton of live concerts of any kind, outside the very largest cities, which are put on for the rich and elite, so the
result is rather a somber review, but the author only presents
                the facts.
However, there is slight hope, and he names the handful of
alternatives that seem to be surviving, and sometimes expanding,
the availability of good classical music.
This has to be a "must" for anyone interested in either the history of classical music, and its ties with radio and the
recording industry, or in its future.
There is almost too much detail for some readers, but it needs
to be there for a full understanding; in spite of the depth of
the writer's research, he presents it in an interesting fashion,
and there are many parts of the book which are very difficult to
                put down.
If interested in this subject, rush out and get a copy now.

5 out of 5 stars A story of big business perverting classical music...........2001-02-11

Isn't it amazing what money continues to do to some people and more so, to business? This excellent historical and recent account of how classical music has wound up monetarily suffocating itself is the best read that I've encountered. I could never figure out, until I read this book, why some popular artists' CDs would still be $16 EIGHT YEARS after their release. That's because the CD label still hasn't recovered from paying that artist's ridiculous fee and consequently, redirects the recording industry's funds away from our country's orchestras and lesser known talent. One can see today what turmoil this has caused classical music and its starving artists. Read this book, for if you love classical music, it can be a guide to help people better manage classical music towards a more fiscally sound future and most important of all, stop the greed.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST BOOK TO DATE ON THE BUSINESS OF CLASSICAL MUSIC.......2000-01-12

If you've watched the two-decade evolution in pop music industry exposé books-going from general veiled accusations and using pseudonyms, to the hard- hitting journalistic romps that are being written today, naming names, dates, companies, and places-then you'll appreciate the HIT MEN of the classical world, Norman Lebrecht's WHO KILLED CLASSICAL MUSIC, which, while it may not name vulnerable artist names in all the damning anecdotal situations in which Lebrecht places them, does explore the life and business of classical music in an alert, candid, and yet affectionate way, naming companies, managers, artists, salaries, and even top-echelon concert fees. Readers who may follow classical record-business entrepreneurship will be glad to find that the great independent- label success stories of our era, such as Naxos and Hyperion, are very much a part of Lebrecht's consciousness and research. There are no clear-cut classes of heroes and villains here, just a general sense of regret and fatigue about the current state of business in the classical world. I wish I had read it when we did this with our first child and I'm glad I did now that we are starting again with our second. Although some of the information is sobering, it is important for parents to know. Joel Epstein really knows the subject well and it is worth reading this book early in the college process. 4 out of 5 stars Life in the pre-Civil War Navy.......1998-09-25

William Reynolds was the older brother of Maj. Gen. John Fulton Reynolds who, while commander of the left wing of the Army of the Potomac on July 1, 1863, became the first general officer killed at Gettysburg. Brother William was then a Navy commander and senior officer afloat at Port Royal, SC under Admiral Dahlgren. He was to go on to become an admiral and even acting Secretary of the Navy--twice. This book contains his letters home during the 4-year U. S. Navy Exploring Expedition (the Wilkes Expedition). It also interweaves entries from both his official and personal journal and responses from home--mostly from sister Lydia. Anyone with an interest in the pre-Civil War Navy or even social life (in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, his home) will find this book extremely informative.

"Hutus kill Tutsis, then Tutsis kill Hutus--if that's really all there is to it, then no wonder we can't be bothered with it," Philip Gourevitch writes, imagining the response of somebody in a country far from the ethnic strife and mass killings of Rwanda. But the situation is not so simple, and in this complex and wrenching book, he explains why the Rwandan genocide should not be written off as just another tribal dispute.

The "stories" in this book's subtitle are both the author's, as he repeatedly visits this tiny country in an attempt to make sense of what has happened, and those of the people he interviews. These include a Tutsi doctor who has seen much of her family killed over decades of Tutsi oppression, a Schindleresque hotel manager who hid hundreds of refugees from certain death, and a Rwandan bishop who has been accused of supporting the slaughter of Tutsi schoolchildren, and can only answer these charges by saying, "What could I do?" Gourevitch, a staff writer for the New Yorker, describes Rwanda's history with remarkable clarity and documents the experience of tragedy with a sober grace. The reader will ask along with the author: Why does this happen? And why don't we bother to stop it? --Maria Dolan

                        Book Description

Winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award for Nonfiction. In April 1994, the Rwandan government called upon everyone in the Hutu majority to kill each member of the Tutsi minority, and over the next three months 800,000 Tutsis perished in the most unambiguous case of genocide since Hitler's war against the Jews. Philip Gourevitch's haunting work is an anatomy of the war in Rwanda, a vivid history of the tragedy's background, and an unforgettable account of its aftermath. One of the most acclaimed books of the year, this account will endure as a chilling document of our time.

My prep for going to Rwanda was reading this book. This is a snapshot of the state Rwanda was in during the 100 days and the aftermath. However, much has been done to repair the damage. This is a time of reconciliation and healing. Go to Rwanda and see for yourself. It will change your life.

5 out of 5 stars Will really let you see into this tradgedy........2007-05-29

What a great book. Such insight and it really helps you understand what happened in Rwanda. Especially the history of all the long ago violence and things that have happened over the years. Great book and a must read for everyone.

This could happen everywhere or anywhere in the world. Can really open your eyes into how much we all could be killers or saviors at any one time.

                        Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars The Heartbreak of Hate.......2007-04-10

Gourevitch's jarring telling of the atrocities of hate hit with an imact of severe sorrow. The overwhelming scale of the murders in Rwanda are incomprehensible. It is sad to realize that in this age people allow hate and propoganda to rule their lives.

                        5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2007-03-27

This book was very well written and informative about the genocide that occurred in Rwanda.

5 out of 5 stars Heartbreaking stories from Rwanda.......2007-03-19

This is a superb book, a collection of interviews and incidents from the genocide in Rwanda. There are portraits of unimaginable betrayal, brutality and horror, but also of heroism--the owner of the Hotel Rwanda, for instance. The description of the conduct of the "refugee" camps is particularly useful as a warning on what is likely to happen in the next crisis, and should force us to re-examine our ways of providing relief for people in distress across the world.

                                    Book Description

Edward Lear's album of parrots contains the finest illustrations of the family ever produced. Lear (1812-88) turned his hand to many things in the course of his artistic and literary life—landscape painting, nonsense verse, and the illustration of birds and reptiles. His work as a natural history draftsman lasted little more than the first decade of his career, until his eyesight became too weak for the detail of feathers and scales. The Psittacidae is Edward Lear's most remarkable achievement: he conveyed with telling sympathy the carriage of a bird, the grasp of the claws, the tilt of the head, its grave, curious, or quizzical expression. The book, first issued in parts, was drawn, lithographed, and published on a shoestring by Lear himself in a tiny edition. Commentary by Robert McCracken Peck.

                                    5 out of 5 stars Edward Lear.......2007-01-30

An excellent cd. Even the 1973 reprint of the book fetches over £500 these days so the cd is particularly welcome.

I found the colour and reproduction to be first class throughout.
