Though slim, this volume is one of the few to give adequate coverage to Sorolla's Hispanic society murals - along with a good survey and good quality reproductions of his other work.

Sorolla lovers rejoice! New - "Joaquin Sorolla" by Bianca Pons-Sorolla. General editor Edmund Peel, ISBN 0856676055, 352 pages, larger format, more paintings, SUPERB, hardcover. Available from Amazon. The book can also be found at the San Diego Museum of Art in a softbound edition ISBN 0937108367 which is less expensive.

This is a wonderful artist and a wonderful book. It was reprinted in 1998. I found a copy at the San Diego Museum of Art. This fabulous book would be of benefit to any portrait painter or plein air painter.

I'm a third year art student with an enthusiastic appreciation for sorolla and his ability to handle painting the natural light of spain. I have this book by luck from a relative who searched high and low all over madrid, and came up with it from some obscure book seller, who had only two copies. The sorolla museum "when its open" never has this book. Good luck searching.

Genious Painter from the likes of Sargent........1999-09-03

Sorolla is an outstanding painter of light and all of the above. His oils are so fresh and alive, it makes me salivate. When I read this out-of-print from my art teachers library I was in awe. He is a great painter and you will identify with him if you're interested in : life drawing/painting, John Singer Sargent, and Zornes. It is sad that this book is out of print. You might be able to find it at certain art galleries that might exhibit this kind of work. Or you can always visit his museum in Madrid.

The Old Southwest flourished between 1830 and 1860, but its brand of humor lives on in the writings of Mark Twain, the novels of William Faulkner, the TV series The Beverly Hillbillies, the material of comedian Jeff Foxworthy, and even cyberspace, where nonsoutherners can come up to speed on subjects like hickphonics. The first book on its subject, The Enduring Legacy of Old Southwest Humor engages topics ranging from folklore to feminism to the Internet as it pays tribute to a distinctly American comic style that has continued to reinvent itself.

To begin, the book focuses on frontier southern humor as manifested in works of Faulkner, Erskine Caldwell, Flannery O'Connor, Eudora Welty, Woody Guthrie, Harry Crews, William Price Fox, Fred Chappell, Barry Hannah, Cormac McCarthy, and African American writers Zora Neale Hurston, Ralph Ellison, Alice Walker, Ishmael Reed, and Yusef Komunyakaa. Historians now mark the years between 1880 and 1915 as the beginning of mass culture in the United States and its consolidation under the ideals and values of private corporations. In this study, Sarah Lyons Watts contends that modern American attitudes toward the relationship between labor and capital, as well toward the place industrial labor was to occupy in the corporate state, coalesced in the debates in popular, business, and professional literature in the decades around the turn of the century. She illustrates how the magnitude and significance of changes in the transmission of cultural authority made these years critical in the evolution of industrialists' labor ideas. Following a detailed introduction that provides an overview of the period and a discussion of cultural hegemony, Watts focuses on three case studies: the Pullman strike, an ideological struggle in which public opinion figured not just in the outcome of the strike, but in the definition of labor's place in the corporate order; modern management, which sought to replace workers' traditional definitions with its own and transform the ethos of modern factory work; and the National Association of Manufacturers' anti-union campaign. These case studies demonstrate how nationwide organizations of businessmen met the charges against concentrated capital made by unionists and reformers, advancing arguments that linked the moral value of capital to civic services, national honor, and progress. A concluding chapter, recounting the dramatic social reorganization that was the ultimate product of this period, and a selected bibliography, complete the work. Clearly, all you have to do is write a book where you sound crazy as a loon and it sells like mad. Ann Coulter, Rush Limbuagh, Bill O'Reilly, Michelle Malkin; they all read the same. Lots of hate and no facts.

Hateful and Hypocritical.......2007-09-20

I've seen her on TV so I wanted to examine what she stands for (or lies for) in print. I wasted my money. All the same hate-mongering exaggerations, attack-dog manners, and disingenuous half-facts can be found for free just by reading the amazon reviews of this book and of such similar others as the "Politically Incorrect Guides". Some of you of the ranting class are wasting your talents! You're just as capable of hysteria and vituperation as Michelle, but perhaps you aren't as cute.

embarrassing to read..........2007-08-26

I find it hard to believe that Michelle Malkin (or Ann Coulter for that matter), are "for real". I would guess that they are motivated by a need to market, or gain attention. Either that, or they are secretly working for the Democrats in an effort to make the Republicans look like a bunch of obnoxious fanatics.

Malkin is either a complete phoney, or a deeply disturbed and angry woman who has displaced all of her inner hurt onto undocumented Latino immigrants, Japanese and "liberal" thinkers.

This book is embarrassing to read, and Malkin is embarrasing to watch on TV.
