Book Description

In The Return of the Real Hal Foster discusses the development of art and theory since 1960, and reorders the relation between prewar and postwar avant-gardes. Opposed to the assumption that contemporary art is somehow belated, he argues that the avant-garde returns to us from the future, repositioned by innovative practice in the present. And he poses this retroactive model of art and theory against the reactionary undoing of progressive culture that is pervasive today.

After the models of art-as-text in the 1970s and art-as-simulacrum in the 1980s; Foster suggests that we are now witness to a return to the real -- to art and theory grounded in the materiality of actual bodies and social sites: If The Return of the Real begins with a new narrative of the historical avant-garde; it concludes with an original reading of this contemporary situation -- and what it portends for future practices of art and theory, culture and politics.

5 out of 5 stars How can this be anything but five stars!.......2000-07-27

Granted, I'm not a Phd. in art history, so I can't claim how much of Foster's thinking is his own and how much he "borrows," but these essays, all interrelated and commenting on each other, carefully dissect postwar art, culture, politics, theory. I've read these essays four or five times and come away with a different insight on art each time. The definite highlight for me was the essay on traumatic realism (which ranges from the opposing simulacral and ideological readings of Warhol, to the tearing of the screen in Cindy Sherman, to the abject in art, to the opposing needs to deconstruct the subject and also reaffirm the subject in racial/sexual/cultural discourse.) Whew! It's a daring essay and is the rosetta stone, I think, of the entire book. His insight on the loss of critical distance (which accounts for why the Left and Right sound so much alike these days)needs to be heeded. Long live all the October writers!

4 out of 5 stars excellent analysis ensured by rich Aesthetic knowledge.......1999-12-18

A quite interesting book about visual arts since '1960 written by the author and editor of "Anti-Aesthetics".@Especially the analysis of the recent relationship between Art and Anthropology/Ethnography is unique and suggestive.

5 out of 5 stars Very productive reading.......1999-11-25

The book is full of productive suggestions for writing on contemporary visual arts. For a foreign reader, it provides a cogent overview of different moments in recent art; a fine sampling of commentary on theoretical writing, and valuable insight into current art criticism in the U.S. "The Return of the Real", meaning by that the Lacanian "Real", is a thought-provoking, stimulating idea that runs through the book and has refreshed my own critical work. I am indebted to this book.

3 out of 5 stars interesting essays, but ..........1999-09-26

Foster is a good synthesizer on contemporary art, but ... when you read the footnotes, it feels like he's doin a lot of borrowing from other, less known work. And he never really discusses about the art he mentions, it's all allusions and side comments. And photos of pieces he never even mentions in the text. Still, it's about the best book-lentgh work I can think of on this, and some of the essays are killer.

4 out of 5 stars helpful and interesting book.......1999-07-20

It's a little conplex but appliavle to many kinds of contemporary art theories.

2 out of 5 stars waste of money.......2006-06-03

wellll...first of all this book only has the step by step directions for a couple of digimon (just the 7 kids' digimon in their various forms up to champion) and the from step one to step two there are too many differences that the drawingn becomes confusing. so unless you are into tracing digimon, this is not the book for you.

5 out of 5 stars ANOTHER GREAT DRAWING BOOK.......2003-05-15

4 out of 5 stars Nice book for the kids.......2002-03-23

Pokemon and Digimon aren't as big anymore, but even my 4 year old likes to trace these with tracing paper. Older kids can learn a lot about drawing basics by practicing something they like. Wish they had more examples and different angles on the different critters though.

I could be one of the digi destined. My digimon could be blackwargreymon for my courage or angewoman for the light part of me and /or angelmon for my hopes and/or wormmon for my kindness part of me. Me and Kari could dna digivolve into the ultimate digimon that has Lots of light.

    3 out of 5 stars Good, but..........2001-08-18

I got this book, just because I thought it would be fun. Now, don't get me wrong... it's *great* if you are learning to draw Digimon, really helpful... but I only have one problem with it: The language! Gosh, in this book, they talk like every single Digimon fan is 7 years old. If you ask me, they need some more mature Digimon stuff, for the older viewers.

        Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars 3rd in the series. A tad too short.......2005-04-11

Full-color Adult graphic novel. Based on Italian porn star Selen.

This relatively short full-color graphic novel is the third book in the series that involves Selen, her husband Fabio and their rather open relationship and some scenes from their life.

Fabio and Selen visit a friend in the city of Perugia and several scenes occur in that city.

Scene 1: Fabio and Selen visit with Carlo and his "Japanese" girlfriend (Tiziana) in Perugia (she doesn't exactly look Japanese). At dinner, Carlo mentions that Selen is becoming less daring, and Fabio agrees. Annoyed, Selen knocks something off the table, and when the waiter comes by to pick it up, he gets an eye-full up Selen's skirt. Later, in the car after dinner, Selen and Tiziana strip in the backseat, enjoy each other, and then start in on Fabio, who happens to be driving.

Scene 2: Fabio and Selen visit a theme park. Selen dresses like a "little virgin" in a rather ugly green dress that is quite small, short hem-line and very plunging neck-line (I'm not sure her breasts are actually covered in that thing, and this is her "virgin" dress). Before they head off to the park, Selen, Fabio and Carlo fondle each other.

At the park, Selen has fun showing herself off (riding on the swing ride without panties, and with the seat arranged so that all is revealed to all below).

Scene 3: Ride home from the park. On the way home from the park, Selen, Carlo and Fabio stop off on the side of the road and have some fun.

The book is well-drawn, nothing is censored, and there is little plot. The book contains exhibitism, open marriages . . . An interesting little shallow book that is just a tad too short to be good.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Travel Humor at It's Best.......2006-09-18

"Quip City" is an entertaining and humorous travel guide. From Alabama to Wyoming, Howard Baldwin provides the reader with a new view of American heritage, and local customs. From Anchorage to St. Petersburg he has captured some of America's most colorful cities, their uniqueness and idiosyncrasies. From folklore to historical facts Baldwin's approach is unique. He provides the reader with insights into the culture and personalities of the cities themselves.

Quips and quotes come from well known personalities in the fields of sports, business, entertainment, and politics. I appreciated television producer Bruce Belford's take on Cleveland, "People in New York and Los Angeles want to have careers. People in Cleveland are happy to have jobs. I think more of America is like Cleveland."

I was reminded of my time in Seattle when I read this bumper sticker quip. "People don't tan in Seattle, they rust."

Photographer Georgia O'Keefe opened new vistas of personal travel potential for me in her observation. "If you ever go to New Mexico, it will itch you for the rest of your life."

Baldwin is well qualified to compile these quips and quotes about America. He has a long career in publishing and has written articles for well known travel magazines, and has written and published books on travel and technology.

This book is a combination of Travel, Humor, and Americana. The format lends itself to reading while traveling, for conversation starters, and vacation planning. It is a good book for the coffee table, the bedside stand, and is an excellent choice for anyone's gift list.

5 out of 5 stars Inside the MIND of an entertainer's entire life !.......2004-09-05

This book, written in the first person, actually invites one into the very thoughts that Mr.Cason has as his memory interacts with some of the most well known and famous entertainers in the entire music industry.
The book is just the "right" length of read - not too long - and full of insight and humor! It includes many photographs too!
I would love to go to one of Mr.Cason's book signing's - I know that this first edition will increase in value over time.

        5 out of 5 stars Incredible.......2004-07-12

This book is incredibly entertaining. I'm 25 years old, and need constant excitement to keep my attention. While reading this book I was amazed by the by the numerous experiences Buzz Cason has encountered throughout his life. Any individual one of these expeiences could be a highlight in the "average person's" life, and Buzz has had a countless number of them. You can't help but wonder in amazement how one person had the opportunity to do so many exciting things in a lifetime. No matter your age, this book is incredible!

5 out of 5 stars Heros Abound In This Tale of Rock 'n Roll.......2004-06-15

Heroes are found everywhere in the story of a Nashville kid who made good in the brutal business of music, beginning in the late 50s and still going strong in 2004. Autobiographical in its first person telling, this story regails to us tales of "the early days"...before belly piercing and techno grooves, when some of the biggest names in rock and pop music were fledgling acts, just kids. I found myself asking how one person accomplished all these things and met all these people while turning pages as quickly as my eyes could pass the story on to my eager brain. The creativity of Buzz Cason shines brightly from the pages of this delightful story, pictures being proof of the pudding of the rememberances most of us could only imagine in some fantasy life. The photos alone are worth the cost of the book. Every book shelf should sport a copy of this delightful look back down the road over the long, fun trip it's obviously been for the author. I'm getting it for practically everyone on my Christmas list!

A simple, easy to read book with an important message about how our emotions can affect our behaviors and sometimes lead us to make bad choices. It teaches children and adults alike that if something or someone makes you feel bad, don't let it ruin your day. In this book both Benjamin and his mom learn the importance of talking about what's bothering them instead of letting the "UGLIES" take over, and to let God and their love for each other guide them everyday.

5 out of 5 stars Great book of quotes.......2003-07-25

If you like StoneWall Jackson, You'll love this book. There are so many famous quotes here. Many the Civil War buffs know, many they may not be aware of. From his most quoted lines to some very obscure ones.

You can't go wrong with this book

5 out of 5 stars "Charge, men, and yell like furies!".......2000-07-17

So much has been written about Thomas J. 'Stonewall' Jackson that at times it become hard to separate the reality from the myths. This isn't a criticism but rather just a fact - history is interpreted in so many ways and this applies to Stonewall as it can to any other historical figure.

This little book of quotes, both by Jackson and by those who knew him give us a better understanding of Jackson - the man and the soldier. There are quotes by Lee and McClellan, Garnett and Ewell, but it is the words of Jackson himself, which come across with power and passion. Indeed, at times you can almost feel the piercing blueness of his gaze as he moved into battle.

This is a good little book, it gives a depth of insight into Jackson without having to read longer biographies. I recommend it to you.

5 out of 5 stars Really shows who Stonewall Jackson really is.......2000-01-10

I love learning about the Stonewall Jackson. By reading this book you found out that everytime Jackson won a battle he did not take credit for the victory he would give it to God. Stonewall Jackson would do anything for his contury and God. When reading this you found out how religous he is. My favorite quote would be, "Our God was my shield. His protecting care is an additional cause for gratitude." This book really shows the true Stonewall Jackson. I learend a lot about how even his enemys love him. This is a great book for anyone to read that loves the Civil War or Stonewall Jackson.

            Book Description

“We have to fight back.” —Al Franken

The Left is angry—angry at President George W. Bush, the war in Iraq, the “right-wing media,” and more. And as National Review investigative writer Byron York reveals in this stunning, meticulously reported book, liberal activists have harnessed that anger to build the biggest, richest, and best organized political movement in American history.

Indeed, the Left’s failure to oust President Bush in 2004 has obscured the fact that this new movement has transformed American politics. York documents the staggering scope of liberals’ efforts—the record sums of money spent, the “shell game” financial maneuvers, the close coordination between “nonpartisan” groups and the Democratic Party, the revolutionary approaches to fund-raising and reaching out to voters, the pioneering use of movies and websites as campaign tools, and more.

The Vast Left Wing Conspiracy provides a startling behind-the-scenes look at this powerful liberal movement. York brings the reader into secret powwows at Soros’s Hamptons estate, into the Chinese restaurant where MoveOn is born, to a gala event where Al Franken rants about the evils of the right wing, to fund-raisers where liberals openly mock the election laws they’re ignoring, to the movie premiere where Michael Moore is feted by top-ranking Democrats, into the Washington restaurant where Democratic operatives hatch their plan, and to many other spots along the way.

One thing above all becomes clear: Despite their failure to win in 2004, liberals will only keep improving the well-oiled political machine they built.

“Byron York shines a brilliant light into the very heart of liberal darkness. An essential guide to how the Far Left tried to take power in 2004—and how it hopes to succeed in 2008.” —David Frum, bestselling author of The Right Man

“Byron York is one of the best reporters in America today. His calm, intelligent questions to the Al Frankens and John Podestas of this world puncture leftist pretensions like a pin in a balloon. The Vast Left Wing Conspiracy punctures even such Hindenburgs as Michael Moore and George Soros. York takes his place with Tom Wolfe as a chronicler of the Left’s folly.” —Mona Charen, bestselling author of Useful Idiots and Do-Gooders

“With this book, Byron York becomes the foremost chronicler, and most informed critic, of the anti-Bush Left. It’s an indispensable guide to a ferocious, and sometimes frightening, new force in our politics.” —Rich Lowry, editor of National Review, bestselling author of Legacy: Paying the Price for the Clinton Years

“Byron York, a reporter’s reporter, has given us the definitive account of the workings of the liberal-left activist groups in the 2004 election and how, despite their insularity, their sanctimony, and their failures, they transformed American politics.” —John Corry, former New York Times media critic

“For years Byron York has reported on the clashes between Right and Left, red and blue states, regular people and the elites—always in an illuminating, entertaining, and compelling manner. Now he methodically and masterfully exposes the inner workings of the left-wing cabal that has taken over the Democratic Party. Three politically incorrect cheers for York!” —Laura Ingraham, radio talk show host, bestselling author of Shut Up and Sing

5 out of 5 stars What's behind the desperate struggle to defeat ourselves in Iraq........2007-07-27

Byron York is one of my favorite writers because he reports. No diatribes. No insults. No hysterics. He just reports facts and when he gives his opinions, they are never overstated. There is no name-calling (The title is a quote from the liberal activists who are the subject of the book.) and no conclusions without supporting facts. In fact, York respects his readers enough to let them draw their own conclusions most of the time.

If you think that the campaign reform laws took money out of politics, you really need to read this book. Unfortunately, most of what they did was take political parties out of politics and make them more politically beholden to groups who now control most of the money spent in campaigns and can therefore dictate the policies of the parties, who have heretofore made their own policies and run on them. Having positions and platforms imposed by big money donors was supposed to be why campaign finance reform was needed, but expecting politicians to support such laws without a loophole in reserve shows incredible naivete. The loophole the Democrats were counting on may end up turning into a sinkhole that consumes them or imprisons them for years to come.

I have found plenty of authors and radio and TV hosts all across the political spectrum who will shout accusations, hurl epithets and insults and state opinions as facts, but it is a rare one who can simply report details in as clear and cogent a manner as Mr. York. I wish all political books were as well written and reasonable as this one.

            4 out of 5 stars It's too bad people don't read more.......2007-01-04

I wish more people would read and research politics and determine their own "truths". There's too much reliance on a news media that, for the most part, slants everything to the left. I don't think people should believe something just because they're told to. I would like the critics of this and other similar books to actually dispute things with counter-arguments and facts instead of simply using Liberal talking points that they read that morning on their favorite nonsense-ranting web sight or the New York Times.
I challenge every American to read books like this AND books written by angry liberals. Approach both with a sense of skepticism, research for yourself in history, fact, and common sense. Make up your own mind about things because I'm firmly convinced that the lies and deceptions will fall apart under close scrutiny. Try to find a liberal that encourages you to do your own research . . ..

5 out of 5 stars Do not be carried away by error.......2006-08-26

York gives us the inner workings of the far left and the financial supporters of the Democrats. This quick and disturbing read is well written and informative. He is able to get up close and personal by attending the Democrat/left wing rallies and functions. At times, fought to gain an interview with people such as Podesta and Franken. Byron also clears up some of the conspiracy theories made up by Moore and others. Gossip: "Do not spread slanderous gossip"--Leviticus 19:16

This is the new movement funded by George Sorros and "move on". A new Democrat party is fashioned. Why question Sorros when he has the money. Keep in mind what the beliefs of the big Democrat money supporter are.

Byron also covers the 527 loopholes and abuses, (the do anything to win campaign.) He concentrates on a small group of individuals. Hillary, Dean, Kerry and Moore are also hit upon. He expounds on the Competition between conservative talk shows, and why liberal shows don't work. I don't put NPR in this same category, hence recommend tuning in on occasion, especially PBS. Even though they are biased, PBS does not tend be slanderous. I don't agree with the federal funding of stations, but that is for another time.

Instead of putting their full effort into the election of John Kerry, they focussed more on taking down Bush. The party for the poor? Where is the funding coming from? Support campaign finance?

Byron may spend a little too much time filling pages with movie statistics, but here is an interesting factoid: "Fahrenheit 9/11 and the passion of Christ were remarkable indicators of how Americans would vote."

Liberalism--Apostasy: "Do not be carried away by error"--2 Peter 3:17

5 out of 5 stars Vast Vast Conspiracy.......2006-07-08

It was Hillary who started this (now deservedly mocked) idiocy about "vast" conspiracies. Yes, Hillary, those evil Republicans forced Bill to abuse his power to get cheap sex (one word Bill: Hookers).

As to the book, the Left is not interested in honest discussion of issues - period. Its current controllers/purveyors are simply preachers of a substitute religion for the religiously homeless secular masses who seek meaning through "belief" and "membership" rather than through hard won reason and lonely individualism.

How much hatred and fanaticism and conspiracy theory crap does one hear coming from the Left vs. the Right these days? Its about 100-to-1 coming from the Left.

The irony, of course, is that it has always been the swing voters who make the difference in national elections, and swing voters put just as much importance on mental stability and intellectual consistancy as they put on "issue correctness."

This is wise, especially with the presidential politics, because many (if not most) issues presidents end up dealing with are new (temporal) issues which cannot be predicted ahead of time.

1 out of 5 stars Only Promises What It Delivers.......2006-06-10

In this book, Byron York only promises to present the evidence of a vast Left-Wing conspiracy - and that is all he presents. The discussion here is limited to what left-leaning money has done. Primarily, this amounts to a muckraking castigation of George Soros for pointing out the fascistic tendencies inherent in Bush Administration policies and a denigration of Soros' concerns that the US is now, currently, moving in the same direction as NAZI Germany in the period between the World Wars.

There is no discussion here of any sort of moneyed conspiracy on the other side of the aisle: no reference to the vast amounts of AmWay (DeVoss family) money available to smear Democrats and moderate Republicans; no reference to the vast amounts of WalMart (Walton family) or Timkin (Timkin family) money available to do away with a justified and justifiable estate transference tax; and absolutely no reference to the extremely close, and extremely profitable, relationships between George Bush and Ken Lay (Enron) or between George Bush and Jack Abramoff (Republican corruption and treason).

5 out of 5 stars More Great Essays from Alexander Skutch.......2007-10-06

This is a collection of 14 essays that vary greatly in focus and scope from the narrow nearly academic "Study of the Woodcreepers of Tropical America" to the wide open view of "Mexico by Train" and Through Peruvian Amazon by Gunboat".

Skutch's training is as a biologist and naturalist but his talents as a writer and his enthusiasm in the field have combined to help produce these fascinating essays. As someone interested in the birds and natural history of Central and South America I enjoyed each chapter. The Epilogue:"The Appreciative Mind" resonated with some of my own thoughts on birds and nature. Here again Skutch has written something I wish I could write, a philosophy of the appreciation of nature. It is particularly enjoyable when reading to find an author that has already collected thoughts that you yourself have stumbled about on. Here Skutch writes so eloquently on the enjoyment of nature and birds and the imperative to protect what has taken millenia to produce what we see that I have the greatest admiration of him.

5 out of 5 stars This Book Should Be Reprinted.......2004-11-30

Alexander Skutch traveled around much of Latin America as a USDA botanist in the 1930s and 1940s. His job involved such work as surveying the Amazon for rubber trees and studying the various plant life found in this remarkable region. However, his real love was the birds. It's difficult for birders to make their sport sound interesting to lay people but Skutch has a way with words that will capture the imagination of anyone with an interest in nature. He's a gentle soul who lived through interesting times, including the 1948 Costa Rican Revolution. His essay, "Birding during a Time of Revolution," is not only one of the most fascinating birding adventures I've ever read but it also perfectly captures the follies of man in this region, and throughout the world for that matter. My other favorite is "Birding on a Gunboat in the Amazon"-an essay about a military mission that Skutch made in the 1940s to survey the Amazon for rubber trees. While the times have changed in Central America, many of the birds remain the same. If you enjoy Latin America, and its culture, history, flora, and fauna, you will cherish this book and read Skutch's stories again and again.
