This book gives you some of the everyday images from Dr. Seuss' children books and sketches for those characters, but also invites you into a secret world of other at that he created, some reminiscent of his popular books, but some much more abstract and interesting.

This book is a good buy for those who want to see more of who Dr. Seuss really was and what other art he created.

Geisel was truly an artist, as can be seen in this collection.......2006-07-10

Ted Geisel, more widely known as Dr. Seuss, was a consummate writer and illustrator. His children's books have sold millions of copies; it is a near certainty that few children grow up in the United States without being exposed to Seuss books. This book contains some of Seuss's art that has not had a great deal of exposure. Most are paintings, although there are some works of three-dimensional art.
There are some very subtle messages in these paintings. On page 67 the image has the title "A Man Who Has Made an Unwise Prochess (sic)." A sad-looking man is walking from a distant building along a trail where there are sharp drops on both sides. The image caught and held my eye as I tried to determine what was so familiar about it. Then I realized that the man looked a great deal like Adolph Hitler. The eyes, hair, mustache and shape of the face all match.
Most of the other works contain characters similar to those that have appeared in his books. They are all well done, exuding a brightness and joy so typical of the Dr. Seuss books. Geisel was just as much an artist as he was a writer, perhaps even more so. If you examine this book, you may also reach that conclusion.

Seuss Specifically For Adults.......2004-08-13

I have been fascinated with Dr. Seuss (Theodor Geisel) since I was a kid and my Mom and Dad would read Seuss stories to me. I had an interesting perspective of Seuss from a young age, though. My father, an English Professor, was writing his Doctoral dissertation on "Transformational Grammar in the Works of Dr. Seuss". In this treatise (which involved a good bit of math, it turns out: my Dad's undergraduate education was in Metallurgical Engineering) my Dad approached Seuss from a very adult point of view. Even after growing up, I would continue to marvel at the seeming simplicity of the Seuss tales, while grasping the incredible complexity underlying them all. Needless to say, my late father deserves credit for initially exploring these facets with me.

With that background, I had been looking forward to a compendium of the Seuss "adult" art. This is it, and it is glorious. These pieces are at once similar stylistically to his animation for kids (although I really do believe that kids of all ages love Seuss), but on the other hand are much earthier and adult. To my delight many of these pieces feature cats, but some of the cats are decidedly not friendly, witness, for instance "Cat from the Wrong Side of the Tracks" (1964). I am particularly fond of his more avant-garde paintings like "Impractical Marshmallow-Toasting Device", a piece that I would not have been able to identify as a Geisel if not for the telltale handwritten inscription.

There is no doubt that Dr. Seuss is for adults as well as children (I also recommend checking out his World War Two political cartoons), and I am delighted to finally have this book (with introduction by the wonderful and whimsical Maurice Sendak) available to see what Ted Geisel did in his spare time. I recommend this book highly.

Known in some circles as the "4th Beastie Boy" or the "Rap-arazzi," long-time Greenwich Village, N.Y., native and man about town, Ricky Powell truly delivers the goods in Oh, Snap.
This photo guru has been in the game a long time, which is evident in his body of work, especially with the old school Def Jam recording artists he shot including Public Enemy, LL, and the Beasties, just to name a few. Powell has an uncanny ability to showcase an era of both hip hop and NYC culture that seems to have faded in recent years. Like Glen E. Friedman, Powell was in the right place at the right time, capturing a movement that was explosive, dangerous and elegant all at the same time. This book is a must have for all hip hop fans and those who remember the way NYC was prior to the Rudy Giuliani administration.

Homeboy, throw in the towel...............2002-07-05

Not a bad book. Some cool Beastie Boys photos and a few Run DMC pics as well. Sure, there are other 80's rappers in here, but it is mainly comprised of Beastie/DMC shots. Ricky was one lucky dude. I remember him during the Check Your Head tour soundcheck in '92 (in Mesa, Az). He asked all lesbian girls to meet him at the side of the stage after the show. He also ran around the Beasties with a camcorder during the show. Lucky man.....Good book for the price.

this book is soooo dope! i'm a diehard beastie's fan so this made me extremely pleased. the pictures in here are ones that i've never seen before and it doesnt just feature the boys: it includes Run-DMC, a few pics of LL, and various hip hop artists... i suggest it to any fan especially teenage girls like me who enjoy looking at pictures of the Boys in their prime hotness...

This book contains daily strips from June 22, 1990 to November 13, 1990. This is the typical small Jove paperback which is done for this series. Mort Walker introduces a new character to the strip in the form of Corporal Yo. This is an American soldier of Japanese decent. He's not a very funny character and many will find that the jokes with him are very topical and don't carry well today. Other than that, the rest of the humor is pretty good. Fans of Beetle Bailey should go ahead and add this to their collection if they can find it.

This is one of a series of books with different instruments. Section one shows you phrasing and subsequent sections have lots of chord work, which is very neccessary for a Jazz Musician.

It assumes a reasonable reading knowledge of music, so would not be suitable for someone learning to play sax for the first time. It is a good book which contains all the basics. The reason I have not given it five stars is that it needs some kind of introduction, or accompanying narrarive, explaining how to use the book.

You have a series of phrases then all the chord work, but there is no narrative explaining how it all fits together and what you need to do.

It is a good book however, and very reasonably priced and is also ring bound so that the pages don't all fall out. I refer to it frequently.

This book was well written with easy to follow suggestions from the toddler years to the teens. I believe following the suggestions will not only help with prevention of drug use, but will help to raise a well adjusted, highly motivated, and well rounded child! I only wish it were around when my children were small! I would highly recommend this book as a gift to anyone who is having a child, or even thinking about becoming a parent! I have had this book for over 3 years and I continue to use it as a source of strength and direction. As life gets busy and stressful, parents also need reminders of the simple things we need to do and discuss with our kids. My children are reaching that age where I'm no longer there in all their social gatherings and this book has been instrumental in having meaningful conversations about their hopes and dreams and how drugs ruin those hopes and dreams. They also know where I stand on drug use without it being a lecture that gets tuned out. I highly recommend this book.

The Tokyo Rose Case, a Cautionary Note for Today.......2002-03-22

Six months ago I was traveling along the coast of Washington, when I woke up to the terrible TV scenes of fire and death and collapsing buildings. I wrote my first thoughts in my diary: "As events unfold, I worry of our response. Will internal security become Gestapo like? Will we isolate ourselves? What about our civil rights or the rights of dark guys with beards and robes?" To know what could happen, we only needed to look back to the internment of Japanese-Americans or the case of "Tokyo Rose" (Iva Toguri).

If you are interested in World War II history or the excesses of patriotism, this is a book you should read and keep in your library. Mr. Howe has done a through job gathering the events and as a bonus describes the world of living in an enemy's country. I also value the picture Howe paints of life as a POW in Japan. It's nice that he has humanized some of the Japanese military, even to the point of letting us see that there were good and bad on both sides. Consider, for example, the support Iva received from the fighting GI's and compare it to the pettiness of the (mostly) non-combatant government agents.

Howe's writing style could have been more readable and there were a few errors of fact. (p. 244 Doolittle's first raid was in 1942 and not two years later.) These did not detract excessively.

Our challenge today as Americans is to avoid another case of "Tokyo Rose".

A GOOD HISTORICAL ACCOUNT, BUT LACKS EXCITEMENT.......1998-10-17

I had expected that the author would reveal a lot of what Tokyo Rose actually broadcast and, especially, the effect it had or was expected to have on our troops in the Pacific War. Plus, obviously, some followup on how she was eventually arrested in the U.S., etc. This text is a very good historical and legal account about Tokyo Rose (the one chosen for this book), her biography, her time in Japan, how she got involved, how she was arrested in the U.S. and so on, but the narrative is so detailed that it becomes boring and tends to lose the general reader's interest. On the other hand, if you are interested in Tokyo Rose's life and personal problems, and demand a lot of very detailed and specific biographical and prosecutorial information, this is the book for you. Sorry, not what I was looking for...

Serious research, must read.......2007-05-08

After reading negitive reviews of this book I decided to read it. And I am glad I did. Among other things, the book explains very thoroughly how anti-Semitic bigotry has been cultivated in Europe, mainly in France, during the last 30 plus years. The book's author did excellent job researching roots of European antipathy toward the U.S. and utmost hatred toward Israel. She shows how ridiculous and at the same time how wide-spread is joint Arab-European modern mythology about Islam's great contribution to world's science, art, and the cause of human rights, while in fact Islam remains the most backward, intolerant, and barbaric ideology ever created on this planet.

The book includes a very impressive list of appedices (real documents), notes, and bibliography. I think it should be a required reading for anyone interested in the subject.

A Frightening World.......2007-03-10

Bat Ye'or writes intelligently about recent developments and changes in the world. Sixty years after the end of the Second World War and the Holocaust, it seems that we are once again facing a perilous situation in Europe. Through the ages, more people have been killed in the name of religion than for any other reason. Will we face that reality once again in the twenty-first century? Her book is definitely worth reading.

An Important Book.......2007-01-10

This is an important book that eveyone with an interest in Islam and politics must read. This book explains in detail how and why Europe is undergoing a process of Islamization. Not just allegations, the author fills the book to overflowing with references, citations, and ample evidence to prove her point. This is required reading.

A true Zionist and a Manipulator.......2006-12-22

I have never read such an exagerated propaganda in all my life's reading and academic studies. Bat Ye'or needs to repent and to apologize to the world especially to Jews, Christians and Muslims. Ye'or must have undergone some sort of trauma as a child with a bit of brainwashing by the zionist movement. I do not recommend anyone to invest in this unscholarly crap. The book trashes everyone except the zionist movements and its supporters. I wish I could rate this book a zero rather than 1 star. Ye'or and her followers need psychological and mental help. If you do not believe me read the book with a critical eye and you will question her credibility and dismiss her as a fanatical zionist for blood.

White birthrate to blame, not Islam.......2006-12-02

The book is based on false premises and a lack of broader understanding. There wouldn't be millions of Muslims in Europe if the White Europeans didn't have such a low birthrate. The Muslims arrive there for work and those countries need their labor. Are Arabs to blame because Euros refuse to have children? I don't think so.

In this vast and impressive volume, Bat Ye'or chronicles the origins and course of the insidious cultural and economic Jihad of the past 30+ years against the West. She identifies the historical and spiritual dimensions of the current struggle against our civilization by detailing how the enemy has been weakening our culture in the aftermath of the 1973 Yom Kippur War.

Oil wealth has been harnessed to wage psychological and diplomatic warfare in order to subvert the Judeo-Christian and Enlightenment roots of Europe and turn it into a limp-wristed post-modernist culture as a prelude to subduing it completely. The most disturbing revelations concern the European intellectual and political elites that have colluded in this process of undermining our heritage.

The clearest signs of the extent to which they have succeeded are the Anti-American, Anti-Zionist and Pro-Palestinian attitudes of much of Europe nowadays, demonstrating the effects of the intelligentsia on ordinary people via the media. By playing on European resentment of American dominance, the enemy was succeeding in undermining the Western Alliance until the election of Sarkozy as President of France in 2007.

There is also the gruesome convergence of a resurgent fascist Anti-Semitism with the Islamist resentment of the existence of Israel. One of its manifestations is Palestinianism, where the Western cultural pathology of guilt is being exploited to turn the West against Israel. Other forces were at work too, like French envy of Anglo-Saxon pre-eminence and the material benefits of close economic co-operation with the oil-rich countries of the Middle East and North Africa.

After the Yom Kippur War and the subsequent raising of oil prices, France threw itself into the arms of the oil-producers and influenced the European bureaucracy to follow suit, by means of the EAD (Euro Arab Dialogue) and the Parliamentary Association for Euro-Arab Co-operation (PAEAC).

Shamelessly abusing the western value of tolerance and leftist fads like relativist multiculturalism, the enemy has been gaining ground whilst giving nothing in return. Thus Israel has been turned into an international scapegoat while atrocities and genocide in places like Sudan, Chechnya and Rwanda plus human rights abuses in Islamic countries have been ignored.

The various strands of this European policy of dhimmitude encompass appeasement, bribery, and the encouragement of Anti-Americanism and Anti-Semitism in the guise of Anti-Zionism. Thus decades of Leftist undermining of Western values and multiculturalist indoctrination in academia are bearing their poisonous fruit. It is of the utmost importance for those who cherish the West to understand that the war against Israel is a war against all of us.

By denying its roots, Europe has destroyed its defences. For example, the socialist welfare state has contributed greatly to a declining birth rate on the continent. Now it must cope with millions of immigrants, many of whom are hostile to the host culture and refuse to integrate. What a horrible historical exchange took place: Six million Jews murdered and barely five decades later there are up to twenty million immigrants with a significant alienated component in their midst.

The Ottomans were halted at Vienna in 1683 but Europe now finds itself in a very vulnerable situation. Sold out by their elites, the ignorant taxpayers of Europe are subsidising the slow destruction of their civilization. Unless there is a spiritual re-awakening and a rediscovery of the European heritage, the future looks bleak. The great historian Walter Laqueur privides a melancholy picture of the decline of the continent in his recent book The Last Days of Europe: Epitaph for an Old Continent.
