Book Description
This text aims to teach the reader how to assess her body type and then choose clothing that looks good on her. The process involves what the authors call an individual's "design pattern." This pattern is made up of lines, shapes, proportions, body particulars, scale, colors, and textures. How they fit together in harmony and how an individual infuses them with her innate creativity is what authors call "style."
Text Features:
1.Principles of art as they apply to understanding and enhancing the female body
2.Art reproductions from museums such as The Metropolitan Museum of Art and Musee du Louvre, illustrating women's body forms and surface features
3.Hundreds of line drawings suggest contemporary wardrobe strategies
4.Two color wheels and pages of charts for skin, eye, and hair color.
5. Provides color swatches to create a color wheel

Most Comprehensive Read for Image.......2007-05-22
This book is for the experienced Fashion and Image Consultant that want the theory behind creating image and beauty.
If 'unuseful' were a word, I'd use it........2006-04-09
I am a fashion designer who was looking for some good resource books to help with figure-appropriate designs. I came across this book after a long search and thought I had found gold. Unfortunately, it was not what I expected. I was really disappointed with the line sketches used to explain clothing choices and found those designs to be VERY outdated- especially considering the second printing was in 2002. For example, I could not disagree more with the advice for rectangular-shaped women- that they should opt for sack dresses that ignore the waist, rather than trying to create one.
The chapters on jewlery choices and color charts were equally useless.
I would not recommend this book to any fashion designer looking for figure-flattering design elements. "Dress Your Best" by Stacy London and Clinton Kelly is by far a better choice- especially considering the price.
Excellent.......2006-03-10
This bok with it`s beautiful drawings adds dimension to it`s material. This is a must for people who want to look their best and also a great book for clothing designers as weel as image consultants.
Valuable for a seamstress.......2006-02-27
I found this book six years ago in the libarary. I took copious notes from it over the next few years I checked it out. I finally purchased it and with every reading get more tips for style. I wish I had purchased it sooner.
I sew and it has proven valuable for things like selecting prints, woking with fabric texture, and determining hemline, waistline and neckline lengths and widths. Other books tell me what to do to achieve an effect, but this one tells me why.
I am exploring style and trying to develop more creativity in my sewing. I think this is the best guide around for that purpose. It also would have been a good companion for my "Dress for Success" efforts a few decades ago.
What a joy to read!.......2005-07-09
Having been frustrated by all the books that ask you to slot yourself into one of 4 to 6 body types, I felt incredibly lucky to come across this work in my local public library. Creative in its presentation, with a literary content missing in many how-to books, and with inspiring illustrations, the book was constantly missing from my library. I now own three copies, just so I can lend two out to friends!

Description:
The gas-phase concentrations of polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs) (16 congeners) were investigated over 1 year at two sites in the Venice Lagoon ('marine' and 'industrial') and at a mainland station ('rural'). @SPCN concentrations were mainly composed of lighter congeners and ranged from 191 to 3415fgm^-^3 with values comparable with those of 'background' air. The lowest @SPCN concentration was detected at the 'marine' site while no significant differences were found between the 'industrial' and 'rural' stations. The presence of combustion marker congeners in most samples suggests that this is the main source of PCN at all sites. The variation of @SPCN concentrations over the year showed that the highest values occurred from autumn to early spring months at the 'industrial' and 'marine' sites, while at the 'rural' station the values were quite homogeneous, with some peaks in summer. The temperature-PCN relationship was statistically significant only at the 'marine' station, but with a weak correlation. The linear regression between PCN, PAH and PCB, and the seasonal evolution of their ratios was investigated to gain a better understanding of the potential sources of PCNs. At the 'marine' site, it may be supposed that combustion processes constitute PCN sources, with a substantial sea influence. At the 'rural' site, continuous PCN sources from distant points of emission are hypothesized while the 'industrial' site may be supposed to feature an unidentifiable continuous source as well as other seasonal sources.

NOT THE BEST URBAN LEGEND BOOK.......2000-04-14
This book calls it self the best urban myth book ever but its hardly that. they left out many poular legends such as the death car. They fill it up with ones that are pointless. Any way the correct tile for one of the storys is urban legends not urban myths. if you want to read a book n this subject read the baby train, the mexican pet.

Many of you may think that the practice of making subliminal suggestions has been proven to have no effect on consumers. WRONG! This book, written by the world's leading authority on these techniques, dissects them in detail. After reading this book, you may realize that the stuff dribbling down your chin is not Diet Coke, but Pavlovian saliva. Very Highly Recommended.
Book Description
Exposes the strategies used by advertisers to manipulate our thoughts and senses.
Customer Reviews:
A Subliminal Seduction History.......2007-04-12
This is a great visual work illustrating the use of subliminal information in advertising together with many other abuses that take place only to seduce and manipulate the consumer.
By Eldon Taylor, author of Subliminal Communication, Subliminal Learning, Thinking Without Thinking and Choices and Illusions: How Did I Get Where I Am, and How Do I Get Where I Want to Be?
Excellent, funny, mind-boggling... A must!.......2004-07-09
I found "The Age of Manipulation" at a local library while I was doing a research about subliminal messages and I wanted to know why they're such a big deal for some people.
I thought I was going to read about some conspiracy theory not to be taken seriously. After all, who needs hidden messages in the media when we have so many lies in our daily news and everything that's called "entertainment" has a strong sexual appeal, most of them are not subtle at all. In other words, who needs subliminal messages? Who needs some dirty message we can't consciously notice when there's so much dirt in the media that we can see with our eyes wide open?
I must admit I thought the book was about some religious/right wing ramblings taking everything in our daily life to "magical" proportions. But I wanted to know more so I read it. I realised Dr Key really has a point. It's not about magical thought or conspiracy theories at all, what he did was just to link Freudian theories, philosophy, science, to things he saw in the media, and that's what's brilliant about his work. He saw what we couldn't see without a "little" help. So if you see something dirty in his books, don't blame him, blame Freud ;-) Or our incounscious defense mechanism that block what we have seen because what we saw could shake our values systems, our view or the world, everything we belive in. Freud again. It's not a book for everyone, if you want to "stay safe" don' t read it. You'll never see the world the same way again after reading it - that could be a blessing or a curse.
In those times when conglomerates that dominate our global economy also dominate everything we call news, culture, art and entertainment, this book is a must! As well as his older books, if you can find them, go for them! But if you get "The Age of Manipulation" that's enough, it's his most comprehensive book, the one that says it all.
We've been had for so long, that's enough! Let's not allow humanhood "devolve" to media zombies.
Somebody please reprint this book before it's too late.
off the subject.......2002-04-29
I haven't yet finished this book. It started out o.k., much like his earlier books, but after a few chapters he strayed wildly off of the subject (subliminal manipulation) and I've been waiting for him to get back to it. At this point he has talked about politics, the nature of truth, philosophy, language, Aristotelian logic.......all without any support for his opinions. Read his earlier books instead.
Fascinating examination of ads, but scientifically unsound.......2001-09-28
Like other reviewers of this book, I am familiar with the work of Cialdini, Aronson, and Pratkanis. I highly reccommend these authors for a good scientific examination of persuasion (and subliminal persuasion).
I come from a psychology (undergrad) and marketing (MBA) background, and I work in marketing. I found Key's discussion of the ads featured in this book to be very informative; I think he is right on with his analysis of many of the ads featured. With all the money that comapnies spend for these ads, it is highly unlikely that the hidden messages are accidential. I enjoyed this book because I have never encountered an attempt to point out and explain the hidden messages in ads.
However, Key should have just left it at the modest claim that advertisers sometimes use hidden messages in ads in an attempt to get people to buy products. Instead, Key goes on to claim that subliminal and archtypical messages are the main factor in all of our purchasing decisions. This is an extremely tenuous argument, and one that he does not back up scientifically except to refer to "numerous studies published", and citing several scattered studies.
I could also do without Key's self-aggrandizing, and his notion that he is out to save the world from the virulent world of big business and government propogandists. The tone of the book is hardly endearing, and Key goes way beyond what a reasonable academic would try to prove from the evidence presented. Key's ramblings on page 196 about the evilness and uselessness of university business education is laughable.
Key also presents no evidence that the subliminal messages are what causes people to buy. As a marketer, this information would be vital to me. Are there studies comparing consumer choice with identiacal ads, only varying the presence or absence of the subliminal images? In my MBA program we were taught sound analysis of marketing plans, not subliminal trickery.
All in all, I enjoyed the book for its analysis of hidden messages in ads. But please look to other psychology, communication, and business scholars for a more scientific analysis of the issues presented.
Eric
Tres Interesting, but Sadly No Facts..........2001-09-24
Subliminal advertising is a really cool concept. Finding pictures titillating to the senses deftly hidden in advertisements is a good rainy-day activity, especially with this book as a companion. However, in the world of truth, Key's work has no place. Contemporary psychologists have long since disproved the effectiveness of subliminal messages. Read "The Age of Propaganda: The Everyday Use and Abuse of Persuasion" Chapter 34 by Anthony Pratkanis and Eliot Aronson, and you'll see what truths have been found that dispute subliminal messages and their effectiveness. Overall, read Key's book for entertainment, but do not depend on it for facts.

Book Description
With The Rage and the Pride Oriana Fallaci breaks a ten year silence. The silence she kept until September 11's apocalypse in her Manhattan house. She breaks it with a deafening noise. In Europe this book has caused and causes a turmoil never registered in decades. Polemics, discussion, debates, hearty consents and praises, wild attacks. And a million copies sold in Italy where it still is at the bestsellers' top. Hundreds of thousands in France, in Germany, in Spain: the other countries where it has become the Number one Bestseller. Around a dozen translations will soon appear.
With her well-known courage Oriana Fallaci faces the themes unchained by the Islamic terrorism: the contrast and, in her opinion, incompatibility between the Islamic world and the Western world; the global reality of the Jihad and the lack of response, the lenience of the West. With her brutal sincerity she hurls pitiless accusations, vehement invectives, and denounces the uncomfortable truths that all of us know but never dare to express. With her rigorous logic, lucidity of mind, she defends our culture and blames what she calls our blindness, our deafness, our masochism, the conformism and the arrogance of the Politically Correct. With the poetry of a prophet like a modern Cassandra she says it in the form of a letter addressed to all of us.
The text is enriched by a dramatic preface in which Oriana Fallaci reveals how The Rage and the Pride was born, grew up, and detachedly calls it "my small book." In addition, a preface in which she tells significant episodes of her extraordinary life and explains her unreachable isolation, her demanding and inflexible choices. Because of this too, what she calls "my small book" is in reality a great book. A precious book, a book that shakes our conscience. It is also the portrait of a soul. Her soul. No doubt it will remain as a thorn pierced inside our brains and our hearts.
Customer Reviews:
21st century eye-opener.......2007-10-08
With a rare courage and honesty, Oriana Fallaci shinest the light of the truth and candid scrutiny on her country and the world- breaking a ten year silence after the horrific terrorist attacks in New York on September 11, 2001.
A modern day version of Emile Zola's J'Accuse, Fallaci steps in boldly where most fear to tread, exposing the truths that all of us know but all fear to speak. Fallaci writes that this book was an effort to "open the eyes of those who do not want to see, to unplug the ears of those who do not want to listen, to ignite the thoughts of those who do not want to think"
She does this admirably. She attacks Islamic fundamentalists and the arrogance of the politically correct elite whom she refers to as the "cicadas".
Fallaci was a teenage partisan during the Second World War, fighting Mussolini's Fascist regime in Italy and was an intrepid journalist for decades, covering many wars and struggles. Fallaci writes of the frightening Islamic terror network which is growing like a cancer in Europe, protected by the politically correct Left, who manipulate or deny the evidence.
She writes of her pride in her Italian culture and swears that if Moslem terrorists destroy any of her countrie's landmarks and treasures: "I swear: It is I who would become the holy warrior...War you wanted? War you want? As far as I am concerned war is war and war will be. Until the last breath."
If their were more people like Fallaci in the West and Israel, we could certainly win the battle against the Islamo-Nazis and their cheerleaders on the international left.
Fallaci aptly points out the reasons for Islamic terror:
"Dont you see that all these Ousamas Bin Laden consider themselves authorized to kill you and your children because you drink alcohol, because you don't grow the long beard and refuse the chador or the burkah, because you go the theater and to the movies, because you love music and siing a song, because you dance and watch television, because you wear the miniskirt or the shorts, because on the beach and by the swimming pool you sunbathe or almost naked or naked, because you make love when you want or with whom you want..."
She also attacks the politically correct hypocrites of the left who in the name of Humanitarianism revere the invaders and slander the defenders, absolve the delinquents and condemmn the victims, weep for the Taleban and curse the Americans, forgive the Palestinians for every wrong and the Israelis for nothing.
You HAVE to read this book if you want to understand the great strugles the world is faced with at the dawn of the 21st century.
For those that curse the muslim invasion, She will be missed........2007-09-30
Having written a factually accurate book she was condemned to death by the islamic hordes. They threatened, hounded, followed her and all of her family. She died a natural death quietly.
A MUST READ for anyone that knows and understands the deadly threat coming from the cult of islam. Borrow, steal or buy, but read.
simple and with a lot of good sense .......2007-09-11
I always respected and admired Oriana, since reading her Vietnam reportage in the 70', Niente e cosi sia.
After the infamous 9/11, she wrote what a lot of people and politicians are afraid of saying. She is just defending our western values against extreme and fanatic export of a religion into the Western Hemisphere.
She shows and writes about many facts, she is very proud to be a Tuscan woman, a former WW2 anti fascist fighter, a proud Italian, a proud New Yorker, and proud about Western values. How can you not agree with her and rejecting medieval mentality where human life is nothing ? where I'm labeled to be a pig because I'm an infedel ?
great book, it was and is a very impressive and easy reading for me. The title is so self explanatory " The Rage and the Pride "
Passionate rant from Itallian intelligentsia........2007-03-24
I am not sure what I thought of this book. I laughed at her bravado to challenge Muslim radicals. I do not think female (or male) testosterone will be effective here. If the critical issue were machismo I might agree. I know I am in danger of sounding French, but ideas are the battlefield not hate. I am a conservative but I want to be effective in my opposition to Islamic aggression. I do not feel this book helps in that cause.
Passionate pleas for some sense.......2007-03-17
Passionate, and original thinker unafraid to be different, whether you agree with her or not. A refreshing voice in the wilderness of political correctness.
Customer Reviews:
We'll Never Forget!.......2007-07-18
Sometimes, and how I wish it were more often done, it is necessary to scream at craziness. When people die because others court and appease fascists, is it wrong to wail at the insanity?
Ms. Fallaci
even with her roughness and vulgarities, is a women with class, and not the pseudo-culturalist sort, those whom, through her knowledge of history and politics, she so neatly puts "in their places". Capitally she lifts the pretentious fog of the self-righteous yet guilt-ridden West because she got it right. She got right that everybody deserves freedom with justice as its guard, that there is a contrast between the elaborate art, Greek thought and high literature of the West compared to the dross of Islamic nonculture. That women's rights are zero in Islamism, and that feminists of the West could care less. There isn't much that is sane about passive political correctness, this strange idea of tolerance for a religion that invites subjugation and a terrorizing conformity. Islamic-fascists want our territory, and our souls and Oriana wants us to refuse to give away either or to be duped by abetters. If you think this is reactionary, maybe you also think the war in Iraq is an illusion. I'll have my little "drink" and I'll be more sober than the calculated coolness of Islamic demolitionists. Our stickers promised that "9-11, we'll never forget". Some of us have forgotten.
Wake-up Call.......2006-11-13
If you want to know what the book is about, you can read the other reviewers' comments, which are accurate. All I can add is that this book is a wake-up call for the very naive who think that Islam is a religion of peace. In addition, I couldn't agree with Oriana Fallaci more. If the European Union doesn't destroy Europe first, the tidal wave of immigrants will. Fallaci decided to translate this book into English herself. Consequently, there are oddities in the grammar, syntax, diction and punctuation, which as far as I'm concerned, only add to the effectiveness of the work. The reader feels as if Fallaci is speaking directly to him, especially with her repeated use of the parenthetical expression "my dear". This was a lady with guts (she would say "balls"). I would love to have met her.
about crusaders and reverse-crusaders ..........2005-07-21
Oriana Fallaci treats Islamic Fundamentalism as equivalent to Mussolini's Facism or Hitler's Nazi-Ideology. She thinks, that Osama bin Laden started a sort of Islamofascism, a "Reverse Crusade". We all know the Bamiyan Buddhas (the ones the Taliban dynamited) and the September 11's apocalypse, we know the attacks in Madrid, Istanbul and now in London. Journalist Fallaci wrote in her book: "So listen to me, you followers of a God who preaches an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. I was born in the war. I grew up in the war. About war I know a lot and believe me: I have more balls than your kamikazes who find the courage to die only when dying means killing thousands of people. Babies included. War you wanted, war you want? Good." Maybe this old lady (75) too vigorously defends Western culture. On the other hand maybe it is correct, when she blames Europe's blindness, deafness, masochism, conformism considering the growing numbers of culturally non-integrated Muslim minorities. The global violent actions of the Jihad and a lack of civil debate-response remains a constant reality, isn't it? Various imams of Europe (many of whom have been implicated or jailed for terrorist activities) celebrated 9-11 and pushed in their mosques the tenets of a religious death following the words of the Koran and the wishes of "Allah". We immediately should start a discussion with this "religious" scene. We shoud require a statement of the imams with regard to the suicide-bombers. Muslims in Madrid, Istanbul, London and elsewhere in Europe should say a clear and public NO or YES. And maybe, before we start a discussion with those "religious" people, we at first should read Oriana Fallaci's book ...
we should start a dialogue with the imams ..........2005-07-21
Passionate polemic.......2005-06-30
This passionate polemic by Oriana Fallaci grew out of an article she wrote for an Italian newspaper after the events of 9/11. She afterwards expanded the piece in order to say everything she wanted to get off her chest. In her own words, she was trying to open the eyes of those who do not want to see, unplug the ears of those who do not want to hear and ignite the thoughts of those who refuse to think.
In her introductory dedication, Fallaci explains that the English text is her own translation and there may be oddities in the style and vocabulary, but that she wanted it to be like that because she wishes to retain complete responsibility for every word, period and comma in this book. I found her language quite charming, an Italianate version of English brimming with rage and anger.
In the Preface, she talks about inter alia New York as a place of refuge for Italian expatriates, her family background, the struggle against fascism, the process of writing the newspaper article that eventually evolved into this book, and much more besides.
The main text starts out with her feelings right after she saw the attack on the Twin Towers on TV and what followed. She also discusses the various reactions from around the globe, the heroism of the fire-fighters and America's unity in the face of adversity.
Fallaci really lays into the politically correct, the followers of multiculturalism and the apologists for terrorism. While not blind to the faults of the West, she vigorously defends Western culture, even Christianity, although she claims to be an atheist.
Talking extensively about her travels in the Middle East, Fallaci relates a humorous incident about the time she interviewed the Ayatollah Khomeini in Iran, and a sad encounter with Ali Bhutto, a former Pakistani prime minister. Her outrage at the destruction of the Bamiyan Buddha statues in Afghanistan is palpable. She also gives a moving account of her meeting with the Dalai Lama in Dharamsala in 1968.
Fallaci doesn't mince words as she talks about the growing numbers of culturally non-integrated minorities in her native Italy and the problems arising from that situation. It would appear that she despairs for the future of Europe, lashing out at certain European leaders and the political elites. She calls the EU the suicide of Europe.
I think The Rage And The Pride must be the most politically incorrect book that I have ever read. It is brutally honest, emotional and perhaps a bit over the top in one or two places where it might make some readers' hair stand on end. But it is a rivetting read, one very special woman's testament to the dangers facing the West, and an eloquent defence of our culture.
Those who appreciate this book may also appreciate Eurabia by Bat Ye'or, Unholy Alliance by David Horowitz, The New Anti-Semitism by Phyllis Chesler, Castle Of Lies by Christopher Booker, Terror by Fiamma Nirenstein and Fallaci's latest, The Force Of Reason.

Book Description
This volume provides a primarily nontechnical summary of experimental and theoretical work conducted over the course of 35 years which resulted in a developmental framework capable of integrating causal influences at the genetic, neural, behavioral, and ecological levels of analysis. It describes novel solutions to the nature-nurture problem at both the empirical and theoretical levels. Following field observations, laboratory experiments led to the discovery of the nonobvious prenatal experiential basis of instinctive behavior in two species--ground-nesting mallard ducklings and hole-nesting wood ducklings. This work also describes the experiences that lead to the rigid canalization of behavioral development as well as the social and sensory experiences that favor the continuance of flexibility. The author also describes in detail a developmental psychobiological systems view that supports a behaviorally and psychologically mediated pathway to evolutionary change in humans and other species. Written in a waythat is readable to even the nonspecialist, the text is accompanied by numerous photographs that illuminate and add personal meaning to the written words. Readers will be engaged by the emphasis on the human aspect of the scientific enterprise.
