Very Pleasing.......2005-08-10
It's hard to review bookmarks - they have such a simple job to do. However, I admit that not only are these bookmarks visually inviting, but are quiet useful coming in a book of twelve. It's nice to have a spare ready - particularly when you tend to juggle several books as I do!
great gift for any Art lover.......2001-07-31
I loved these book marks. I am a teacher and I plan to use them in my classroom. What better way to introduce your students to great works of art. I love Degas and I am sure my students will learn to love him too.The price is also right! You can afford to give a few away and still have plenty for yourself to enjoy.

Welcome Volume on Geopolitics of Oil and Gas.......2006-06-15
Brenda Shaffer, from Harvard's Caspian Studies Department, stated that energy will be a defining issue in international relations in the twentieth-first century, yet few political scientists have tackled the geopolitics of oil and gas. Bahgat's welcome addition to this short list will be of special interest to policymakers and journalists. His study examines trends in the global energy market, focusing on the U.S. strategy for global energy security, and Washington's relations with Persian Gulf and Caspian Sea region states. The overview chapters are particularly valuable to assign to students, who will also benefit from the book's excellent glossary.
Some observations on the book: Bahgat's important contention that "independence, not dependence, is the cornerstone of today's global energy markets" underscores why U.S. policies aim to ensure not only U.S. energy security but also global energy supplies. It also highlights why supply interruptions affect not just specific consumers but cause global price hikes.
Another important point is that Iran and a number of other Middle East states do not allow foreign oil companies to have a real stake in production and infrastructure projects. This, more than U.S. sanctions, has proven a barrier to foreign investment in the Iranian energy sector.
This reviewer disagrees, however, with the author's contention that Azerbaijan chose to export its oil on an east-west pipeline (Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan) as a result of U.S. pressure. Actually, Baku never seriously pondered exporting its main strategic resource through Iran.
Bahgat correctly points out the gradual erosion of Saudi Arabia's surplus oil production capacity and notes how its absence greatly affects the dynamics of today's world oil market.
He often highlights the discrepancy in estimates of oil reserves, a matter researchers should bear in mind. In fact, there are few independent estimates on oil and gas reserves, so all reports should be used judiciously.
In some of the chapters on specific regions, such as Iraq and the Caspian region, the author's attempts to keep the text up to date actually hurt their shelf life. For instance, the book discusses the merits and disadvantages of the various pipeline options for export of oil from Azerbaijan while the debate on the main export pipeline was determined with the construction of the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline to open for operations in late 2005. In addition, the book discusses the merits of different policy scenarios toward Iraq under Saddam.

Customer Reviews:
BUY IT!.......2000-06-09
Phil Coulter is a master! This book is an excellent collection of his own original piano pieces and arrangements of traditional Irish tunes. Especially enjoy playing "Flight of the Earls" "Steal Away"and "Mary from Dungloe" For interesting variation, take the c and g sharps out of Dungloe's key signature and play the notes straight as though the piece was in the key of G, turning it into a hauntingly beautiful minor sound. I admire Phil Coulter greatly and this is a great collection for the amateur pianist. Buy it! (Watch out virtuosos-not very challenging music, but it doesnt need to be; it's glorious!)

Book Description
Against all odds, the miners of Bienfait, Saskatchewan attempted, in 1931, to change their miserable situation by organizing a union. Stephen Endicott focuses on the miners' tumultuous thirty-day strike to explore the social consequences of capitalist restructuring during the Great Depression. The miners' bid to gain union recognition with the aid of the Workers' Unity League of Canada failed, and Endicott's in?depth examination of the key factors and players attempts to explain why it did so, and why a similar union drive a decade later eventually succeeded.
Based on a large number of both oral and written primary resources, Bienfait offers a new interpretation of the role of the corporations, the government, the courts and the police and in the process demonstrates how a militant union leadership helped the workers gain the strength and unity of purpose to challenge the powers of wealth and deep-seated prejudice. Endicott opens a new chapter in the history of Canadian labour relations which reveals much about Canadians and Canadian society during the Depression.

Book Description
In Battlegrounds, Michael Stephenson assembles an impressive roster of the world's best military historians and writers, including Dr. David Chandler, Richard Holmes, John Warry, and Brendan Morrissey, to discuss the impact of geography on military strategy and history. This collection of essays, illustrated with vintage and modern maps, offers geographic adventure around the world, across centuries, and through every kind of terrain, shedding new light on famous battles and introducing less well-knownbut nevertheless significantmoments in military history.
Throughout military history, battles have often been determined by certain geographic imperativescharacteristics of the terrain that significantly affect the nature of the fighting. Confrontations, therefore, have essentially been decided by an army1/4s ability to adapt to geographical features, giving rivers, mountains, and beaches lead roles in the political shaping of the world.
From Alexander the Great's attack across the Granicus in 334 B.C. to the U.S. siege of the mountains of Afghanistan in 2001, geography has been a permanent and crucial factor in battle. Battlegrounds provides an unprecedented and fascinating look at this most formidable of adversaries throughout the history of warfare.
Customer Reviews:
Geography and Battlegrounds - and real maps!.......2006-10-31
A book with short story coverage of historic battles needs two things: 1) a coverage of the battle with the applicable geography and it's effect on the combatants, and 2) a map or maps showing the terrain, troop location at battle initiation, movement through the combat phase and troop distribution at combat conclusion. Without all of those, I suppose, a period map showing troop distribution at the start of combat and all of the important sites located on one map is the next best thing. When I first looked at this book, some of the maps appeared nearly useless. The map of the Battle of Cedar Creek in the Shenandoah Campaign was as close to unintelligible as about any I have tried to decypher. As I continued to read the book, however, I was particularly struck by some of the other period maps. There were some awesome inclusions. Iwo Jima and Chancellorsville were two of the many that absolutely provided a picture worth a thousand words. Some showed terrain in shaded relief, some in hachure typical of the period of the battle (one decade (Omdurman, Sudan, 1898) different than another (Gettysburg, 1863 and Balaklava, 1854)), molehills, contours, bathimetrics, monochromatic patterns, and numerous period paintings of troop distribution and terrain. The depth of the discussion varied from battle to battle, but was generally not too deep for some one looking at the geography of the battle and not the planning, logistics, course of the combat phase and the aftermath. I would say the value of the book is the combination of observable geography, the study of combat events and the delightful discovery of a hisory of the evolution of combat maps through the ages.
Superficial is as Superficial Does.......2005-02-15
I was eagerly looking forward to the premise of this book -- "the influence of terrain upon combat." Upon reading, I discovered that the actual premise is the "arrangement of a shallow analysis of battles by their dominant terrain feature". The book's structure is equivalent to arranging battles in alphabetical order and describing the approach as a "typographical evaluation of letters upon combat." The terrain analysis part was sorely missing.
I had hoped that the writers would intertwine their recouting of the battle with the operational flow and tactical impact of the terrain. In all honesty, the subject of terrain was not ignored -- it was addressed in a most superfical, overall manner -- usually in the introduction to the battle -- and then often ignored thereafter.
And the maps. Godawful! Somehow the publisher decided that quaint historical period maps with little discernable detail would add a nice touch to the text. Artistically, they mave have. What they did not do is convey information about terrain nor, largely, the battle.
I would recommend this book only as a rudimentary introdution to military operations in varying terrain. I could not, in conscience, advance it as a text that analyized the interaction of terrain and combat.
It was a great disappointment. Look elsewhere.
Gallipoli vs. Yorktown and Bataan.......2005-02-03
I disagree with the Publishers Weekly review that Gallipoli should be grouped with Yorktown and Bataan for trapped on a peninsula instead of under Coasts. At Gallipoli the British, Australians, and New Zealanders were floundering on the coast trying to get inland, while the Turks were inland trying to repel the incursion. Neither side were trapped on a peninsula. The British could have and eventually had to reembark. At Yorktown the British were trapped on a peninsula and had to surrender. Likewise at Bataan the Americans were trapped on a peninsula and had to surrender.
An Excellent Book - 5 stars.......2004-12-14
I did a brief review of this book for the Richmond Times-Dispatch a year ago. As a retired military officer with 31 years of service, I liked it immensely and disagree completely with the other reviewers on Amazon who disliked it. I believe they do it a grave injustice. It makes an excellent addition to my military history collection. I liked the selection of battles and the way they were organized by geographic feature.
Balancing the stars.......2004-08-10
Did the same reader write all the reviews with one star? They sound suspiciously similar.

Book Description
From one of our shrewdest economic trend-spotters, a wake-up call that prosperity is about to shift from the West to the East, and what we can do before it's too late
By the beginning of this century it was already commonplace to speak of the U.S. as a "hyperpower," to talk of its military, political, and economic clout as unprecedented in world history, and to assume that American dominance would continue at least throughout our lifetimes. It is conventional wisdom that America will have no serious rivals for at least a generation. But the American position is far more fragile and ephemeral than much of the world believes.
Clyde Prestowitz shows the powerful yet barely visible trends that are threatening to end the six-hundred-year run of Western domination of the world. The trends include America's increasingly unsustainable trade deficits; the equally unsustainable (and dangerous) buildup of massive dollar reserves in places like Japan and China; the end of America's position as the world's premier center for invention and technological innovation; the sudden entrance of 2.5 billion people in India and China into the world's skilled job market; the role of the World Wide Web in permitting many formerly localized jobs to be done anywhere in the world; and the demographic meltdown of Europe, Japan, Russia, and, in later decades, even China. Three Billion New Capitalists is a clear-eyed and profoundly unsettling look at America's and the world's economic future, from an author with a history of predicting the important trends long before they become apparent to others.

Scary but Excellent Must Read.......2007-05-28
No need to write anything extensive as the prior reviewers have done a great job. I have found this book to be the most profound analysis of what is happening around the world to date. This book really sums things up and paints a grim picture of things to come in the USA. This book is miles above Thomas Friedmans breezy light cheerleading extolling the benefits of a flat world. This book is truly a must read.
Great Read on globalisation, economics and politics.......2007-02-03
Clyde has done a great job trying to explain how globalization, economics and politics is changing the way we live today. Even though he is from the conservative Reagan administration, he has unbiased opinions about the current economic situations around the globe.
He not only talks about China as a globalization power, but also talks about the shortcomings of the United States as the current economic super power.
This book is better that Tom Friedman's "The World is Flat"
Very detailed....and sobering if even only half true.......2006-10-28
I believe this accounts listed in the book are true, and so my title wasn't written to indicate that I don't believe the book...but rather to indicate how serious our situation could be.
I say could be because I think the countries of China and India still need us in a big way...because we are the #1 consumers. But as we lose that benchmark and sink to 2nd or even third behind Europe and Asia, they will no longer have an interest in supporting our unbridaled spending. (lets face it, we spend more money than we actually have....not everyone, but as a whole as a country!)
This book outlines all the numbers, and reasons for the current situation. I actually feel it is somewhat positive in it's progonosis for the future. There are other books that have us jumping right off the cliff....but the outlooks given here are not all rosy, but don't all end with a 100 foot plunge to our end.
Very good book...I recommend it highly!
Haven't We Been Down This Road Before?.......2006-08-14
Interesting to see a book like this come from Prestowitz, former Undersecretary in the Reagan Administration. Back then it was America losing its good jobs and future to the Japanese. Remember them? Japan, Inc....central planning...national industrial policy...would soon be running the world. American debt, loss of technological edge, outsourcing would all mean the USA would be reduced to second-world status by 2006.
It was precisely because Prestowitz's Commerce Department let the 'hidden hand' of the market prevail that we wound up with the economic boom of the 90s.
So it is very strange to see Prestowitz ring the same alarm bells he firmly rejected a generation ago. Seems every economic book I read these days remeinds me of the early 80s....alarmist. That is not to deny the issues he raises in this book, but to paint a grim and destitute future for the American economy is tired and not well thought out.
That, in the end, is why this book only gets two stars. Intellectually it's bereft. Nothing new here.
another one about globalization like the analysis of thomas friedman.......2006-06-26
I liked this book. Obviously, with the Cold War over, America now needs to compete globally with India and China, among others. This book talks about the ways that companies can do so and the challenges facing us. This book is quite similar to Thomas Friedman's book The World Is Flat, in places. The apologists for globalization say one thing-- the opponents of multinational corporations' exploitation of workers say another thing-- but the fact remains that worldwide capitalism is changing, and each of us needs to change to remain employable. This book is a report on the inclusion of India and China's billions into capitalism.

Description:
Winter flooded rice fields can serve as substitute habitat for migratory waterfowl. Not much is known about the effects of the foraging waterfowl on nutrient cycling in rice production systems. This study quantifies the effect of foraging waterfowl on decomposition of rice residue and N-cycling in a winter flooded rice field in the Sacramento Valley, California. Along two transects in a field, pairs of control plots and exclosure plots, which excluded waterfowl, were set up. The original straw residue within the inner 2m^2 of the 3mx3m plots was replaced by ^1^5N labeled straw residue. The labeled residue was subsequently followed into the light fraction and mineral fraction of the soil through the winter flooding period. Foraging waterfowl increased the loss of ^1^5N from the residue from 83 to 89%, but did not affect the mass decomposition and loss of total N of the residue. No significant effect of the waterfowl was seen in the recovery of the residue N in the total soil N pool and in the light fraction, although there was a low recovery of residue N within these pools in the control treatments. The recovery of residue N in the NH"4^+-N pool after winter flooding was significantly lower in the presence of waterfowl. The increased loss of residue N and lower recovery of residue N in the presence of waterfowl may indicate that the rate of N-cycling was increased. A better understanding of the N-cycle in winter flooded rice fields in the presence of waterfowl is needed to assess the potential benefits of winter flooding for the rice farmers.

Description:
Coastal habitats near urban centres in North Atlantic estuaries often support substantial numbers of wintering waterfowl, but little is known of the effects of landscape setting and urbanisation on habitat use. We conducted surveys of waterfowl at 32 wintering sites in Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island, to identify characteristics that may influence habitat use. Sites were chosen along a gradient of urbanisation and reflected the dominant habitat types used by waterfowl in the Bay. Mean waterfowl abundance was 206.7+/-209.5 birds per site, and sites in the inner part of the estuary had higher overall waterfowl abundances (r^2=0.40, p=0.021). Species richness ranged from 3.2 to 13.0 and decreased with increasing hunting activity (r^2=0.36, p=0.040). Hunting activity and habitat characteristics (e.g., latitude, shoreline configuration, prey density) explained 13-27% of the variation in waterfowl abundance and species richness among sites, but landscape characteristics (e.g., surrounding residential development, vegetated land, or wetland surrounding the sites and the extent of wetland edge) explained an additional 1-26%. The landscape characteristics extent of adjacent residential development and vegetated upland were the most common variables entering into the models; most species were more abundant at sites with more adjacent vegetated upland and less adjacent residential development. Our results suggest that landscape setting may be influencing the distribution of wintering waterfowl, and should be considered when developing strategies for the conservation for these species in urban North Atlantic estuaries.
