Book Description
From the Introduction
Wabi-sabi is a beauty of things imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete.
It is a beauty of things modest and humble.
It is a beauty of things unconventional.
The immediate catalyst for this book was a widely publicized tea event in Japan. The Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi has long been associated with the tea ceremony, and this event promised to be a profound wabi-sabi experience. Hiroshi Teshigahara, the hereditary iemoto (grand master) of the Sogetsu school of flower arranging, had commissioned three of Japan's most famous and fashionable architects to design and build their conceptions of ceremonial tea-drinking environments. Teshigahara in addition would provide a fourth design. After a three-plus-hour train and bus ride from my office in Tokyo, I arrived at the event site, the grounds of an old imperial summer residence. To my dismay I found a celebration of gorgeousness, grandeur, and elegant play, but hardly a trace of wabi-sabi. One slick tea hut, ostensibly made of paper, looked and smelled like a big white plastic umbrella. Adjacent was a structure made of glass, steel, and wood that had all the intimacy of a highrise office building. The one tea house that approached the wabi-sabi qualities I had anticipated, upon closer inspection, was fussed up with gratuitous post- modern appendages. It suddenly dawned on me that wabi-sabi, once the preeminent high-culture Japanese aesthetic and the acknowledged centerpiece of tea, was becoming-had become?-an endangered species.
Admittedly, the beauty of wabi-sabi is not to everyone's liking. But I believe it is in everyone's interest to prevent wabi-sabi from disappearing altogether. Diversity of the cultural ecology is a desirable state of affairs, especially in opposition to the accelerating trend toward the uniform digitalization of all sensory experience, wherein an electronic "reader" stands between experience and observation, and all manifestation is encoded identically.
In Japan, however, unlike Europe and to a lesser extent America, precious little material culture has been saved. So in Japan, saving a universe of beauty from extinction means, at this late date, not merely preserving particul

Thought-provoking, well-crafted, informative.......2007-09-14
An informative and enlightening introduction to the concept of 'wabi-sabi', that also succeeds at inducing the actual feeling of wabi-sabi, leaving you not only with a sense of heightened awareness, but wanting to linger in that pensive, slowed-down state-of-mind into which you are deftly drawn.
a quiet, memorable read.......2007-09-07
The book is unconventional and perhaps that is the beauty of it as it attempts to define the essence of the term Wabi-Sabi. It is important to be in the right frame of mind when reading this as it is philosophical, contemplative and yet, very relaxed, understated. It's a peaceful, poetic and elightening read. I've given it out as gifts in my designer circles.
Wabi Sabi translates when working with people of technology as a designer.......2007-08-13
This is a wonderful book giving insight to a world that doesn't understand there is beauty without perfection as defined in magazines.
As a designer people will often want to lean into a contrived, look that is staged.
This book validates it is often good to step outside of the box and make a space more interesting and creative by doing so. Using the unexpected material or leaving a space uncluttered, simple to give the eye a rest.
In general it is finding perfection in imperfection in life. Our perception of things change as we grow and view the world differently.
We can only hope in a world filled with diversity we learn to open up and this is a good little book to enlighten any reader.
Content where I am, also willing to improve.......2007-04-26
The Japanese tea ceremony is popular in global literature, movies, and theater to the point of what seems a small cult following. Westerners wonder at its significance and find it mystic. "Wabi-Sabi" by Leonard Koren provides us with a glimpse of its underlying importance that can be taken as a symbol for the whole of the wabi-sabi aesthetic. To clearly define wabi-sabi in words is to destroy it. However, this book succeeds in preserving wabi-sabi's identity as a way of existence of all things in eternal transition.
Many people are intrigued by the Japanese way of "knowing without knowing." This book is a step toward some understanding of this concept that makes Japanese culture different from the West, although there are also similarities. Wabi-sabi is associated with the Japanese tea ceremony, but westerners do not understand that ceremony. Some think it to be simplicity. Others, tradition. Others, magic. They are all correct, but to express these all at once in words tears a corner out of the larger picture and sets the concept off kilter. Nothing is or can be perfect. Everything is in a stage of becoming. Even a stone is eroded by wind and water. When it is finished, it is destroyed, but it has also become another substance: dust. The dust will become something else - it will be gathered up in raindrops or hailstones or it will be washed out bit by bit to sea, any of these options deposited as sediment, once again to combine and become a stone. Anything perfect is dead or has taken on another form and will continue to do so in natural cycles. This is a small corner of wabi-sabi.
Koren's book is about seeing beauty, but not a beauty that the average American might expect, appreciate, or even take for granted. To put the concept of wabi-sabi into words is to lessen it. It is a way of knowing, but it is more a way of being. This book is physically short, but it is long. One must read it ten times and with each reading comes further understanding, especially in light of the photographic subjects included in "Wabi-Sabi" -- cracked pots, ferns, pieces of natural objects, a small dried fish, a wall. Normally, a Westerner would not see the beauty of a cracked pot, but this book can make that beauty understood.
The wabi-sabi realm is described by Koren to include a state of mind, moral precepts, material concepts, spiritual values, all combined with metaphysical properties. This last element is the state of passing through nothingness, either coming from or going to, and always one or the other - or both at once. When Westerners say that the journey in life is more important than the goals achieved, then they are grasping a part of wabi-sabi. The cracked teacup lying in the middle of a dirt road is more beautiful that the new teacup on the ceremonial table.
"Wabi-Sabi: For Artists, Designers, Poets & Philosophers" begins with a historical consideration of wabi-sabi and some definitions that might be used to understand it. However, no verbal definition is completely correct or inclusive. After this first section, there is "The Wabi-Sabi Universe" in which Koren discusses all of its elements in an intriguing style. I read the entire volume in one sitting and have read parts of it several times over. The discussion of moral precepts is most interesting. "Get rid of all that is unnecessary" is good advice. In this consumer culture, Americans simultaneously throw away too much and accumulate unnecessary amounts of things. The explanation of the humble spirit that comes next is very important. Wabi-sabi rejects hierarchy, but it does not advocate anarchy. To this end, in order to enter a traditional tearoom, all participants must bend low or crawl into a small opening where they will find a simple room made from mud, paper, and bamboo. Inside, they put aside social position, politics, and rank and all are respectful to one another, all appreciating the beauty of one another and the simple objects of the tea ceremony. This is one of the spiritual values of wabi-sabi itself: Beauty can be coaxed out of ugliness. In addition, wabi-sabi is something that occurs naturally, not something that people purposely create, although some art pieces emulate the essence of wabi-sabi to their viewers.
"Wabi-Sabi" would be enjoyable and informative to readers interested in Asian aesthetics, nature, philosophy, art, and architecture,
A Good Book-But Not For All People.......2007-04-19
By its very nature Wabi-sabi is difficult to define. It is an aesthetic best learned through observation and personal experience. However, as Westerners we have a need for everything to be explained with words and categories. We seek to make the intuitive, rational. If you are a person who best learns through the written word, this book is for you. It is well written and dispenses with a lot of mystical babble that is often used to explain Asian philosophy. However, if you are a visual learner, you may find this book disapointing. Too much writing and not enough visual examples of the Wabi-sabi aesthetic.

travel notes by National Geographic journalists.......2003-04-27
This book consists of essays, or rather travel notes, put together by a National Georgaphic team. They write about their impressions from travelling through Canada's national parks by boat, horse, or by foot. They write about everything they see, stories they are told by the natives, the weather, their findings in the forest, their guides, etc. The photographs in the book are as stunning as you would expect from National Geographic photographers. However, if you are planning to go to one of these parks, you would hardly find any useful information in this book. There are no maps, no info on activities, lodging, not even clear information how to get to the location where the beautiful pictures in the book were taken. This book is a good choice to read if you want are curious about Canada's national parks, but have no intention of going there.
Guide to the National Parks- NOT.......2000-08-28
Nat'l Geo. puts out a great book, 'Guide to the National Parks,' of the U.S. with much helpful information for travelers. This book has no such information. It claims to have detailed maps of which there is only one. It has no park specific info like the U.S. guide. It's best use is to weight down a coffee table, except that it's softcover. If pictures are your bag then this is probably a good book for you. If getting into the out of doors is your goal then this book is of no help at all.
In a word - Spellbinding.......1999-05-14
This book has the perfect balance of photography and story telling. Being an aspiring landscape photographer, this book was truly inspirational.
Not to mention that if you love the mountains (but live in the city), this book will make you want to relocate. Unbelievably good photography.
Book Description
High Above the Canadian Rockies takes the reader for a bird's eye view tour of all parts of the mountains. From the unique vantage point of his helicopter, we can appreciate the grandeur of the wilderness and the mountain itself.
Customer Reviews:
SPECTACULAR!.......1999-10-22
Excellent images - gives a realistic view of what BC is all about! The photography is OUTSTANDING!!!
Please, more landscapes and fewer buildings!.......1998-12-15
Mr. Heinl's photographic technique is flawless. The images are perfectly exposed and razor sharp.
The awesome landscape that is the Canadian Rockies is an ideal subject for expert aerial photography.
Unfortunately, the true majesty of the mountains seems to take a back seat to human activity. For every image of Mount Robson or Maligne Lake, we get two or three of the buildings atop Sulfur Mountain or the Jasper Park Lodge golf courses.
A book of this type dedicated more to the backcountry would be magnificent.

Book Description
It has mountains loftier than the Alps and wildlife that rivals Africa's. It has fjords on a par with Norway's, vast fields of grain, and 2 million lakes contained within the world's longest coastline. Some of its cities are among the world's most modern; others call to mind the old-world charm of western Europe. Canada is a land of nearly infinite variety. In Spectacular Canada, Gerald Hall, former travel editor of the Toronto Star, takes the reader on an extraordinary guided tour of this beautiful country, a surprising portion of which is still unexplored. The book offers a wide array of images, from Quebec City, which recalls the Left Bank of Paris, to the continent's largest Chinatown (in Toronto), to idyllic pleasures in the vast Canadian wilderness. Inuit villages and majestic evergreen forests are among the timeless subjects featured in this colorful armchair tour. 200 color photographs, including 18 pages of panoramic gatefolds, by some of Canada's most respected photographers are featured.

Spectacular!.......2004-03-07
Recently returned from a trip to British Columbia, I was impressed by the far-reaching wilderness and remote beauty of Canada's landscape. This book certainly does justice to the breathtaking scenery that Canada offers. Absolutely spectacular fold-out panaramic photographs of some of the wildest, most serene and simply amazing places I could imagine.

Book Description
The book offers an explanation of unemployment based on a model of wage bargaining between a trade union and an employers' association. The theoretical model emphasizes the importance of distributional fairness in wage negotiations, especially with regard to factor taxation. This is achieved by the application of the proportional solution to the bargaining problem. It is shown, that this solution concept delivers a reasonable model of long run wage determination in which the natural rate of unemployment is independent of productivity growth. Taxes on labour and capital are identified as important determinants of equilibrium employment, the labour tax having a negative, the capital income tax having a positive effect. The latter result distinguishes the model from the standard literature. An empirical test using cointegration methods with West German data confirms the theoretical predictions.
Book Description
Business Week described the Gulf War as the largest military logistics operation in history. It entailed an unprecedented deployment of troops and supplies halfway around the world--a management job that Norman Schwarzkopf hailed as an absolutely gigantic accomplishment. Here is a firsthand account of the supply effort that led to the dramatic Allied victory in the Gulf, written by the general who spearheaded the remarkable undertaking. General Pagonis recounts the Gulf War from the first fateful telephone call, to the mobilization of 550,000 troops and the shipment of 7,000,000 tons of supplies, to the enormously complex challenge of bringing home a half million soldiers and their equipment. His highly effective management techniques apply to information flow, time management, motivation, customer service, and organizational design. Using historical examples--from Alexander the Great to the Israeli Army--and current business practice, he makes a strong case for better leadership and better logistics, both in the military and in the private sector. In the Gulf War, leadership and logistics came together, and extraordinary goals were achieved. Also available in hardcover; ISBN 0875843603, $29.95.
Customer Reviews:
Good book on organizational logistics, management and a tale of a gigantic work.......2007-06-09
I bought this book several years ago, as I was interested in reading from a general in logistics his memoirs on Dessert Storm.
I did not approach this book seeking specific textbook information on:
- Desert Storm
- Military Logistics
From experience, the books that are written by those who participated in events we (ordinary people) may never get to see, always teaches us something we can never see in the texbooks. Therefore this book met ny expectations.
I guess its easy to take for granted that if the US has the biggest army in the world, somehow all it operational inputs are a given for any state of action. This is true, but we must not overlook that this happens because of a non-glamorous activity that is called logistics. At the start of the book Gen. Pagonis gives us a very useful definition of logistics "Logistics is the careful integration of transportation, supply, warehousing, contracting and automation into a coherent functional area; in a way hat prevents suboptimization of any of these activities; and in a way that permits and enhances the accomplishments of a given goal, objective, or mission".
It is interesting that through out the book we see specific cases of how each of the ideas in the above definition came to be. What really is a case of suboptimation was the Desert Storm war.. talk about an overkill.. americans won that war in 2 days yet they brought enough firepower to fight 10 WWIII!!!
I am rereading the book and still find it illuminating. When I was in the corporate world, basically all major clots in the accomplishments of any objective can be attributed to lack of proper logistics, if you want sucess you have to think logistically (not logically) or be surrounded by someone like Gen. Pagonis who is!! BTW the story is fascinating since it debunks the myth that the real glory of war is in fancy strategy, in here strategy is a consequence of logistics.
When I read this the 2nd invasion of Irak was years to come, I wonder what the logistic now is, certainly does not sem like the same overkill can be used.
Instructive thoughts from a top logistician.......2004-10-05
General Pagonis has written a very informative book about his experience in the 1990-91 Gulf War with an emphasis on the lessons that the civilian bussiness sector can derive from it. Without a doubt he was a most capable officer for the job he undertook and his on the spot promotion to Lt General proved the great value of his work. The best parts of the book were those where Pagonis came close to General Shwarzkopf, either to receive laconic instructions or to guarantee that everything will be ready on time for the great outflanking maneuver he planned. Pagonis is a living example of what Greeks can achieve when they work inside a meritocracy system, open to talents like the american model (the complete opposite of what Greek political system encourages in our country in the last decades), and he gives many tips for the military and civilian logistician, like the stand-up morning meetings, the use of the 3X5 cards for the flow of information, the "ghostbusters" idea of mobile problem solvers, the great value of the vision in the leader's mind and how it can be materialised in the lower echelons and many more. Although I would like to learn more about the myriad details of army logistics, I understand that Pagonis' target was not to drawn his readers into the sea of information he handled but to outline the principles of his command and management style. I would recommend reading Douglas Menarchik's excellent "Powerlift" as a more data heavy companion to Pagonis' book.
Easy to read and understand.......2003-04-24
Anyone interested in buying this book must understand two things up front:
1. This book is written by a professional soldier and not a business school professor.
2. This book is one man's account of his duties and opinions on the subject of logistics and is not intended to be a textbook on the subject of logistics or a war novel.
If you understand these two things before you by the book then you will find this book to be very interesting as it is one of the few books written on military logistics. Moreover, you will gain insight into as to how General Pagonis used his personal leadership style to manage the logistical challenges of the first Gulf War. For someone wanting to learn about the nuts and bolts of logistics this book isn't for you. However, for those of you who want to gain an understanding of how logistics can impact the success or failure of a war while picking up a few words of wisdom in leadership from one of the best in the business will enjoy this book. I have read this book twice and I enjoyed it each time. Although I couldn't use much of the material from the book in my MBA classes, I was able to apply some of the information from this book while I was earning a graduate certificate in Logistics and Supply Chain Management from Penn State.
Fascinating read on moving things around the world.......2003-04-07
This truly is a fascinating account of just how the United States military was able to move 500,000 troops and all their equipment halfwar across the world, fight a war, and then bring it all home. The numbers and statistics of the effort are truly stunning.
I am no logisticians and perhaps have missed some of the finer points of leadership as a logistician that this book apparently provides. Nevertheless, it can be an interesting for anyone who is interested in just how the US military works and what a complex organization it really is.
Gen. Pagonis only has one flaw - his ego. He really does talk himself up in this book. If one should trust his account of his military career he singlehandedly saved an entire company from annihilation in Vietnam, preserved the M1 Abrams tank program from Congressional hostility, and then did the entire logistical planning and execution surrounding Desert Storm.
But if one disregards Pagonis ego this is a great book.
Too little on Gulf War logisitcs and challenges.......2003-04-02
From a military history point of view, logisticians get far too little credit for allowing the front line to even exist. Lt. Gen. Pagonis' book does attempt to offer some insight into the challenges of supplying the Army's needs as it built up during Operation Desert Storm in 1990-91, and then through Desert Storm. Very little is said about the withdrawal process of Desert Farewell.
The problems with this book are that it is too much centered around a business school philosophy book- not to take too much away from the success that Pagonis had, but it seems less about the challenges of supply in a hostile environment than a depiction of how to solve problems. I greatly respect the efforts and solutions that Pagonis encountered and defeated, but wish this was more a military-oriented book and less of a business school effort.
Regardless of these issues, Moving Mountains will give a reader some appreciation for all of the tasks and unsung duties by the rear echelon forces in combat, and how the Army has developed its ability to deal with any potential environments it may find itself in the future.

Book Description
The use of DNA and other biological macromolecules has revolutionized systematic studies of evolutionary history. Methods that use sequences of nucleotides and amino acids are now routinely used as data for addressing evolutionary questions that, although not new questions, have defied description and analysis. The world-renowned contributors use these new methods to unravel particular aspects of the evolutionary history of birds.
Avian Molecular Evolution and Systematics presents an overview of the theory and application of molecular systematics, focusing on the phylogeny and evolutionary biology of birds. New, developing areas in the phylogeny of birds at multiple taxonomic areas are covered, as well as methods of analysis for molecular data, evolutionary genetics within and between bird populations, and the application of molecular-based phylogenies to broader questions of evolution.
Key Features
* Contains authoritative contributions from leading researchers
* Discusses the utility of different molecular markers for questions of avian evolution, involving populations and higher-level taxa
* Applies molecular-based phylogenies of birds and molecular population genetics data to broad questions of organismal and molecular evolution.
* Compares and contrasts molecular and morphological data sets
Customer Reviews:
Indispensable for Avian molecular biologists.......2000-03-25
'Avian Molecular Evolution and Systematics' provides students and researches alike with an unparalleled review of avian molecular techniques in sytematics and phylogenetics. David P. Mindell has compiled an authoritative collection of contributions from ornithologists and molecular biologists that cover both theoretical and practical applications. The chapters trace the theory behind the altered gene order of avian mtDNA and provide informative reviews of the utility of mtDNA genes in systematics, phylogeny, phylogeography and deciphering patterns of avian evolution. In addition to covering mtDNA a chapter is included on the theory and application of microsatellites, a relatively new technique to molecular biology. It is however unfortunate that there are not more avian microsatellite examples besides that which covers relatedness between cooperative displaying male manakins. However the author does include other applications of microsatellite data (quantitative gene flow and genetic variation) using gray seals and bighorn sheep as examples. This book ends with a chapter on ancient DNA that reviews some of the more commonly used extraction procedures for ancient DNA and again provides examples covering systematics and paleoecology. Although the chapters do cover some molecular procedures the book does not serve as a laboratory guideline to working with avian DNA, rather it covers the more interesting theoretical aspects of avian speciation and evolution. In general 'Avian Molecular Evolution and Systematics' is indispensable for the avian molecular biologist who is interested in phylogenetics, systematics and the evolution of behavior.
