Book Description
"Lowbrow" it may be called, but high-profile best describes the cultural impact of this contemporary art movement. Found everywhere from wine labels and high-end bar accessories to major motion pictures (Teacher's Pet, the upcoming Pink Panther), the visibility of this dynamic work has rapidly increased in the last few years to worldwide recognition and acclaim. Weirdo Deluxe is the first significant manifesto of the genre a riotous blend of pop culture, street culture, pop art, and surrealism and includes profiles of and interviews with 23 leading artists and hundreds of outrageous examples of their work. Special features include an expansive timeline, and peeks at the artists' collections and influences. Weirdo Deluxe is at once a primer and lowbrow art sourcebook as well as a visual homage to pop culture.
Customer Reviews:
Amazing jaunt through many twisted minds.......2007-06-11
If you read Juztapoz and High Fructose, worship Mark Ryden and Coop, love art but are disappointed with contemporary conceptual and process work, THEN BUY THIS BOOK!!!! The out and out bible of pop surrealism and low brow. Savy mixes of graffitti street culture with fine art. I have to say that the discovery of pop surrealism, which I first saw in this book, revolutionized my own art work and has radically changed my ideas about the trajectory of art. Needless to say I like it.
From "Lowbrow Art" to "From Lowbrow to Nobrow".......2006-12-17
Together with Peter Swirski's 'From Lowbrow to Nobrow' this is one of my favourite books on popular art, aka lowbrow, pop, junk, genre, and so on.
Jordan's focus is very much on the visual aspec ts of lowbrow art, an orientation which is only enhanced by the graphic design of the covers and the book itself. I was quite familiar with many of the artists represented in his book, so I was a little less than completely enthused.
One of the chief drawbacks of this very engaging book is the palpable lack of a more historical/analytical framework in which to situate lowbrow art. Another thing I would have loved to see is, especially since Swirski usefully traces it, a detailed treatment of nobrow culture and nobrow art which appears to have been around longer than most critics and commentators would have us believe. All in all, I give Matt Jordan a well deserved four stars, reserving the top score for the book which is really a companion rather than competition to his, From Lowbrow to Nobrow.
Not your pretentious hipster dad's pop art.......2005-12-17
This book is a fine introduction to the work of a younger generation of painters who eschew the cold, minimalist aesthetic that afflicts contemporary art like herpes on Paris Hilton's nether regions. These bold dudes and dames draw instead from the pop culture all around them--and the pop culture of long-lost bygone eras, like the '80s. If you're at all familiar with psychedelia, punk, hot rods, comic books (and underground "comix"), "classic" TV, tiki culture, advertising art & design, fast food, celebrity magazines, steers, beers, queers, freaks, geeks and of course serial killers, then you should find the art in this book accessible as a beer bottle bong in a Phish fan's dorm room. What sets them apart from the pop artists of yesteryear is the young bucks approach the culture as the warm embryonic bath from which they were weaned, lost their virginity and will drown in. Whereas even Warhol had to keep at least one foot in the "high" culture (his bread & butter, after all), artists like Gary Panter and Robert Williams would be just as happy plastering their wares on T-shirts and album covers (and don't bring up Warhol's dalliance with the Velvet Underground; most art snobs still dismiss that amazing band as so much juvenile effluvia). While a great deal of snark and irony can be found here, there's also a genuine appreciation of subjects they were supposed to grow out of.
While everyone will have their own personal faves, and it should be noted that there are a wide range of styles represented here, for me the standouts include the goth-tastic Camille Rose Garcia and Mark Ryden, the gonzo surrealism of Scott Musgrove and Skot Olsen and the cubist comix art of the great Gary Panter. Many will be familiar the highly influential Robert Williams, whose work suggests a coke-addled Salvador Dali on a high speed road trip through the trashiest regions of American culture with a bunch of Hell's Angels as tour guides. Don't hate him just 'cause Guns n' Roses used one of his pieces for an album cover--hate him 'cause he disses pretty much every artist that came in his wake. Still, I have to admit his stuff is pretty rockin'.
Now for the downside. While the reproductions here are generally clear and well-presented, artists who use a lot of detail, like the disturbing, obsessive Joe Coleman, are hemmed in and almost incomprehensible. Even more disappoiting is the cover desigh and title; sure, most of these artists have an appreciation of kitsch, but their work isn't kitschy. It's one thing to wear marginalization as a badge of honor, it's quite another when one of your supporters (Matt Dukes Jordan, the author) marginalizes you, if only by accident. One could also fault the lack of graffiti art here; if "lowbrow" is not really a movement, then why not? All in all, though, "Weirdo Deluxe" is more fun (and informative) then shaving the hair from Ed Asner's back.
Art In Context.......2005-12-01
As a contemporary artist and fan of post war american art I found Dukes Jordan's tome to be a fascinating blueprint of both cutting edge "Lowbrow" art and it's genesis in US kitsch kulture.
I've been subscribing to Juxtapoz for years, so I'm already familiar with most of the artists featured by Jordan. Nevertheless I snapped up his book RIGHT a way. It's cool to have a mini monograph of so many cool artists at my fingertips. The art reproduction is first rate.
His time line describing the key events in 20th century american pop culture culminating in the Lowbrow movement was particularly fascinating. He ties together all the disparate cultural threads as he traces the history of this art form.
All in all a fabulous art book.
A welcome introduction.......2005-11-29
A first-rate introduction to an underground art movement that blends cartoony pop culture elements with fine art sophistication. True to the spirit of the art, the book is fun to read and packed with colorful details about the artists, their work, and the history of the movement. The selection of art provides a good overview of each artist's work and the print quality of the art is excellent -- clear, bright, and detailed. The book's zany and beautiful design complements the art. Highly recommended.

This special collection, written entirely by series creator Beau Smith, collects the entirety of Wynonna's adventures so far: her initial miniseries, the follow-up, "Home on the Strange," and her adventure from IDW's Tales of Terror, as well as pin-ups, the origin of Wynonna, an afterword from Beau, and more! Redneck, trailer trash, drug-running vampires, bounty-hunting biker werewolves, immortal desperadoes, an ancient mummy hitman and the Egyptian Mafia: these are the kinds of perpetrators that covert U.S. Marshal Wynonna Earp hunts down on a regular basis. Created by writer Beau Smith, Wynonna Earp is the descendant of the famous lawman Wyatt Earp. As a member of the so-called "Halloween Hunters" or "Freak Finders," she does what comes supernatural... she brings the unnatural to justice. If there's a monster committing crime in your neighborhood, then she'll be there to bag and tag 'em. His legend. Her legacy. their law. Wynonna Earp is a quirky, head-busting mixture of action/adventure/sci-fi/dark humor.

Book Description
One of the most bizarre stories in all of popular music is the history of "Orange Blossom Special," arguably the century's best-known fiddle tune. The man credited with its ownership, Ervin T. Rouse, endured tragedy, alcoholism and mental illness. He spent his last years fiddling for tips in isolated taverns at the edge of the Florida Everglades, and died all but unknown. The man who claimed co-ownership, Chubby Wise, achieved fame as the seminal fiddler of the bluegrass genre, but struggled to overcome personal demons and to heal the scars of childhood abandonment and abuse. This fascinating book uncovers how their legacies are forever linked with the legendary diesel streamliner which inspired the tune six decades ago, as it roared through American history, bringing wonder and hope to every stop. Includes a Collector's CD of rare, unreleased original recordings of "Orange Blossom Special" by Bluegrass Etc., Byron Berline, Dennis Caplinger, Buddy Emmons, John Henry Gates, The Hellcasters, Gary Morse, Benny Martin and Mike Stevens. Also features the original Rouse Brothers recording from 1939, a live performance by Chubby Wise, and six vintage bonus tracks. Randy Noles is a publisher of city/regional magazines in Florida. During his 25-year career, he has won awards for investigative reporting, feature writing and commentary. Born in Tuscaloosa, AL, he has lived in Orlando since 1967. He is married and has two children. "If you go back and listen to Ervin and Gordon Rouse's original 1939 recording, it's easy to hear 'Orange Blossom Special''s beauty, elegance and power. It bonds the romance of rambling around on trains with the mystique of a far-away land known as Florida. It is pure country music; it is pure Americana." from the foreword by Marty Stuart
Customer Reviews:
A Special Treatment of Florida Fiddlers.......2007-07-17
This book began, in part, with Noles' curiousity about the true origins of the famous fiddle tune. A common belief amongst bluegrass and country musicians was that Chubby Wise co-wrote the tune with Ervin Rouse. But by the late 1980s, this story was coming under serious scrutiny. Noles provides convincing evidence that the tune was co-written by Ervin and Gordon Rouse and that Chubby Wise should be seen as more of a popularizer of the tune -- rather than as a co-author. Both Rouse and Wise emerge as multi-faceted men, and it's to Noles' credit that he provides sympathetic portraits of both of these fine musicians, while giving the story a fair hearing. The book is especially strong when the focus is on the musical careers of the musicians, and the "Orange Blossom Special" almost appears as another important character (along with Johnny Cash, Hank Snow, and other stars) within the story. Along with gaining a glimpse of important parts of the history of bluegrass and country music, readers gain a good understanding of ways in which opportunities are made available to musicians. Readers also will discover that sometimes there are times when not taking advantage of certain opportunities may, in fact, be a wise decision in the music business. The book also includes wonderful anecdotes that Noles collected, including terrific stories about Chubby Wise's mishaps and a very funny story about a night at the Grand Old Opry that involved split pants.
Chubby's silent family.......2006-01-05
I am chubby's great grand son on the so called dumb farmgirls side. I find it very disrespectful to write a book about a man's history without interviewing or elaborating on the one person who was there. My grandmother could shed more light on the Orange Blossom conspiracy than any one alive. she has shared very vivid and detailed stories about the man and the song. And believe me, she is no dumb farmgirl. She is brilliant and deserves some respect for keeping an entire family together while he turned his back on them.
Family Reunions with Ervin T. Rouse.......2003-05-20
I am proud to know that Ervin has finally been recognized for his raw genious in playing the fiddle, composing music, performing for us when I was growing up, and telling about many of the episodes written about in the Orange Blossom Boys. Rany Noles did his research and answered questions which needed to be made known about the life of Ervin, Gordon, his siblings and the joy they brought to many as they sang and made music with the best of Artist, including Johnny Cash. I learned more than we ever knew, as I sat, spellbound, reading the book. Now, I can say I have read the book through and through several times. It is wonderful. I was born April 28,1929 and was privileged to record the Rouse's music when they visited my home. It is my hope that a Documentary will be forthcoming. Ervin ranks right up there with Bill Monroe, The Carter Family, Flatt and Scruggs,Doc Watson, Roy Acuff, etc. He is an Icon in Blue Grass, and respected by the best of them in the business. The Orange Blossom Special is likened to The Star Spangled Banner by me and my relatives. Audrey W. Hartsoe, 24 Scott Place, Clinton, N.
C.28328 PS I did speak with Randy Noles upon receipt of the book; it is wonderful!
finally, the real story is told!.......2003-01-19
What a wonderful job Mr. Noles does in telling the story and interweaving the lives of these two unfortunate souls against a backdrop of old Florida. He is able to convert his massive research into such an interesting read; I had difficulty putting it down!
The Untold Story.......2002-11-28
I would like to know where the book tells about Chubby's other family living in Georgia and Florida. He had a wife before Rossy and she was no stupid farmgirl. He also had a daughter that loved her father more than anything. Where in the book does it talk about them. It does not say a single word because of one women could not stand to have anything to do with his other family. If women would leave married men alone (this goes both ways), maybe the right family would be in the book. The picture of Chubby's step-grandson is a slap in the face to my husband. He is the bloodline of Chubby Wise. I feel my husband's family deserves a right to tell the unknown years of what really happened and how Rossy became Mrs. Wise. I enjoy knowing Chubby was my husband's grandfather, but on the other hand, I get really upset when I hear how much pain and greif was caused by this piece of history.

In When We Were One W.C. Heinz (who cowrote M.A.S.H. under the pseudonym Richard Hooker) has amassed 21 of his short pieces about World War II (and its aftermath), many of them originally written for The New York Sun newspaper. Heinz includes dispatches from the battleship Nevada during the D-Day invasion and several that follow a company of infantrymen during the Battle of the Bulge. The collection is uneven. Heinz's prose suffers from Hemingway envy and too many of the stories suffer from a lack of context. They would have been greatly enhanced by the author's annotations and expansion. There are two notable exceptions: one the account of a post-battle emotional breakdown by one Capt. Joe Dawson in front of his men; the other a moment-by-moment portrait of the field execution, by firing squad, of three German spies. --H. O'Billovich
Book Description
Before W. C. Heinz embarked on his illustrious career as one of the premier sports writers of the past fifty years, he served as a war correspondent for the New York Sun.
Now for the first time ever, Heinz's finest work on World War II, written both during and after the war, is collected in one volume. From his first-person account aboard the U.S.S. Nevada during D-Day in 1944 to his legendary dispatches from the towns and battlefields of the European front, Heinz vividly conveys the courage, humor, and humanity of men under fire. Whether describing a battle scene or a soldier, Heinz brings home the war like few others ever have. In the second half of the book, he and his fourteen-year-old son, Bud, revisit the beaches of Normandy with D-Day veteran Major General Earl Rudder, who recounts his experiences there; in another story he describes, in his patented you-are-there style, the morning three German spies were executed; and in the concluding piece, Heinz revisits many of the towns he journeyed through as the American army fought its way across Europe twenty years before.
When We Were One is a superb collection of writing on World War II that ranks with the finest ever assembled on any war.
Customer Reviews:
A Rough Read.......2006-05-15
This is a rough book to read if you're expecting a reasonably well-constructed narrative like Ambrose or Ryan. If you're looking for some first-hand accounts of action, this book may do the trick. I just found his over-reliance on infinitives "to be very hard to read."
Not an Ernie Pyle but very worthwhile reading.......2003-03-16
This is a remarkable recently published book of short stories gleaned from this ETO war correspondents dispatches during WWII. The book is organized into 3 sections: Dispatches from 1944, 1945 and after the war is over.
The "Dispatches" sections sometimes seem repetitive until you realize that they were published in a serial format, so each had to stand on it's own yet they were a continuing story. So the author had to "recap" sometimes what had happened so a new reader would be able to follow along.
The "After the War" section is presented with current narration in regular type and the wartime writing in italics. It is a nice way to "flashback" while the author is revisiting locations that had wartime memories to him. Some of these were written for publication in national magazines in the 50's and 60's.
I especially enjoyed the authors relating a visit to Point du Hoc in 1954 with the Commanding Officer of the Ranger Battalion that assaulted the cliffs there on D-Day, James Rudder, and Rudder's 14-year-old son. His final story ends with a sad poignancy that is suitable for a book of wartime remembrances. I recommend this book highly to anyone interested in WWII history.
Book Description
Crashing the Gate is a shot across the bow at the political establishment in Washington, DC and a call to re-democratize politics in America.
This book lays bare, with passion and precision, how ineffective, incompetent, and antiquated the Democratic Party establishment has become, and how it has failed to adapt and respond to new realities and challenges. The authors save their sharpest knives to go for the jugular in their critique of Republican ideologues who are now runningÂand ruiningÂour country.
Written by two of the most popular political bloggers in America, the book hails the new movementÂof the netroots, the grassroots, the unorthodox labor unions, the maverick big donorsÂthat is the antidote to old-school politics as usual. Fueled by advances in technology and a hunger for a more authentic and populist democracy, this broad-based movement is changing the way political campaigns are waged and managed.
A must-read book for anyone with an interest in the future of American democracy.
Customer Reviews:
Enthusiastically recommended for anyone involved in grassroots politics........2007-03-06
Crashing The Gate: Netroots, Grassroots, and the Rise of People-Powered Politics is an unabashedly partisan examination of what needs to be done to transform the Democratic party into a viable opposition force to the Republican party, and therefore wrest the nation away from its currently disastrous neocon leadership. Chapters denounce the harm caused by the neocon Republican party, and describe what needs to be done to promote grass-roots opposition within the Democratic party; the authors are quite realistic about the limits of a two-party system, and offer means to reform the Democratic party as the swiftest and most practical way to improve American government. Topics covered include the importance of campaign finance reform, a trough that both Democrats and Republicans feed off of all too frequently; the unfortunate prevalence of unrealistic visions and "single-issue" obsessives within the Democratic party; the changing landscape of modern media; and much more. Enthusiastically recommended for anyone involved in grassroots politics.
Markos is a Hypocrite, Undermines Democratic Party .......2007-01-25
In all of Markos' book about "crashing the gates", he never addresses how the Democratic Party could maintain its relevance in the future if it allows itself to be guided by people like Markos who operate blogs that are only 2.5% Black and 30% female. If he can't even integrate his own website, then how will listening to Markos help the Party to maintain its base and its edge in national elections?
Unfortunately, the same web-based suggestions that helped Howard Dean in 2004 can be used by hypocrital elitists like Markos to create overwhemingly white blogsites (like DailyKos) that ignore the issues and concerns of the women and minorities who make up the majority of the Democratic Party. He should crash his own gates and figure out why there are so few minorities and women at his exclusive website.

Fascinating, maddening read.......2007-01-11
This book covers much of the political situation for the last six years. It will madden, disgust the reader, but enlighten , too. I was only disappointed that the authors didn't seem to have any real suggestions to Crash the Gate. However since the book was published before the 2006 elections, it appears that much was successful in that task. It explains, too why the Democratic party in DC was unhappy about the final results of that election. But we are happy, though.
Nice counterpoint to professional blowhards.......2006-12-07
I am not the biggest fan of either of the author's websites. MyDD puts me to sleep and DailyKos is too screechy.
So I did not immediately run out to buy this book when it was released.
My mistake.
This is a great book for those who are frustrated with the status quo of American politics. I don't believe the netroots alone will save the Republic (and neither do they, I bet) but I believe that the philosophy outlined in this book -- a people-based philosophy -- is a step in the right direction.
This is a very quick read, so it's easily worth the purchase or loan.
Good book worth reading.......2006-09-16
I like the DailyKos, but frankly I was not optimistic that the crossover to political writing would be a good one. I was wrong... The book is well-written and well-reasoned with a lot of good ideas and commentary.

Book Description
This is a fascinating firsthand account of the adventures of an ornithological field team studying long-tailed finches (blackhearts) in primitive outback Australia. The experiences of the author, his wife, behavioral ecologist Nancy Burley, their one-year-old son, and four American student-assistants provide rare insights into social relationships and problems that can develop on field expeditions and how they can adversely affect the scientific endeavor.
