Not once upon a time, but right now, in a British forest called Old Oak Wood, faeries frolic, invisible to those humans who choose not to believe in them. In A Midsummer Night's Faery Tale, doll maker Wendy Froud (best known for creating Yoda and other creatures for Muppet master Jim Henson) and award-winning fantasy author Terri Windling collaborate to tell the story of one of these elusive fellows, a young tree-root faery named Sneezle. Each page of this delightful book is graced with an elaborately staged photo of Froud's doll creations in their natural habitats, paired with Windling's story of Sneezle's unlikely heroism. Sneezle and his diaphanous friends are adorable enough to charm a kid, and his adventures are interesting enough to hold the attention of an adult reading the book aloud to a favorite youngster.
Sneezle's adventures begin when he sets out to fetch the Midsummer crown for King Oberon. Meanwhile, the Faery Queen Titania is found asleep, victim of a powerful magic spell. The hopes of the faery kingdom ride on Sneezle's little shoulders! While on his journey, Sneezle meets up with fascinating forest characters, discovers the identity of the wicked sorceress who has enchanted the queen, and learns about courage and loyalty. He also figures out that being "the same old Sneezle" is a fine thing to be. Kids and adults will enjoy this richly illustrated, romantic fantasy. (Ages 8 and older) --Therese Littleton
Book Description
In a forest called the Old Oak Wood, early on a rosy summer's morn, a young faery named Sneezle wakes in his nest to the clear music of pipes and the warm smell of the sun. At dusk tonight, the Midsummer Eve festivities will begin -- a time of potent magic in the faery realm. But just what will take place remains a mystery, for every year young Sneezle has fallen asleep. Something wonderful will happen, he knows -- or perhaps something dreadful and strange, for the faeries have two sides to their natures.
Something wonderful, something strange...In this enchanting collaboration between renowned doll maker Wendy Froud and award-winning writer Terri Windling, Sneezle's Old Oak Wood comes vividly alive with the magical denizens of the faery kingdom: a fatherly old troll dispensing wisdom from deep in his burrow; faery godmothers washing fragile wings; Titania and Oberon, the great lovers who rule over this faery kingdom; and a host of piskies, pookas, enchanted beasts, and darker spirits. Filled with the mystery and wonder of the very best faery tales, this entrancing story sends our unlikely little hero, Sneezle, into the tangled heart of the forest in an effort to thwart a powerful plot that threatens the Old Oak Wood.
Can the faery kingdom be saved? Can an insignificant little creature like Sneezle succeed in a hero's quest? With dazzling charm and a magical touch that will appeal to readers of all ages, A Midsummer Night's Faery Tale shows us that a good heart can triumph over evil and that humble truths are more powerful than the most elegant artifice.
A Midsummer Night's Faery Tale is the result of a magical collaboration between the doll and puppet maker Wendy Froud and the award-winning author Terri Windling. The faery world they unveil here so vividly features images of Ms. Froud's handmade figures woven into an enchanting faery tale for all ages written by Ms. Windling.
Customer Reviews:
Another great Froud book.......2007-08-06
Just like The Winter Child and The Faeries of Spring Cottage this is very lovely book. Both adults and children will enjoy the pictures and lovely story. This is a must have for all children and Froudians.
Well written, positive story for children.......2004-05-12
An excellent book for children. My daughter loved the heroic faery. The illustrations are first rate. After getting this book for my little girl, I tried out Terri Windling's "The Wood Wife" which is written for more adult readers. I am glad I stumbled onto Ms. Windling's work. Both books were excellent. She is a very good story teller.
Find the Sneezle in yourself.......2003-10-15
Sneezle, you ask? What exactly is a Sneezle? Well, Sneezle is our little root faery hero, that's who! This is a wonderful book with a very good lesson that teaches us that everyone in life has been put here for a reason. Sometimes it may seem that certain people in life have better luck, are more beautiful, are thinner, have a better voice, etc but this book shows us that there is something special in everyone, even when we least expect it. Sneezle shows us that the pure of heart will always prevail over the forces of evil.
The artwork in this book is also PHENOMINAL (please forgive me if my spelling is incorrect.) Every time I look at the pictures, I find something new. The creatures, the landscapes, the settings are all GLORIOUS! Although this is a "children's" book, I highly recommend it for both the young and old at heart.
Spectacular Wendy Froud debut!.......2002-12-02
Wendy Froud is every bit the genius as her husband. This book is absolutly enchanting. Her dolls and her vision coupled with Terry Windling's adorable story create a world that young and old will want to escape to time and again. A must have for all fans of Frouds and faeries.
Wendy Froud the Master of Faeries.......2002-12-01
The book refers all to faeries, the story is good but what I was interested on was the art. Wendy Froud created the dolls for the story and since my interest is doll making, this was a great book full of details. She has another book named "The Winter Child" in which she uses the same dolls but there is different story line. If you are interested in books with great pictures, this is the one or if you enjoy reading good stories to children you will greatly enjoy it. Wendy Froud is the wife of Bryan Froud the great illustrator of "Good Faeries, Bad Faeries" and "The Faeries' Oracle".

Customer Reviews:
great resource.......2007-03-31
this book is a really great resource for beginners. it answers all of the basic questions one might have who is embarking on the journey to do watercolor painting.
Great Textbook.......2005-09-05
Had classes from her .She is a great teacher , and has much to offer . Stuff not found in most watrercolor books .Very informative .
Wisdom Indeed!.......2005-07-22
What a valuable asset to the community of watercolor artists. Jo has shared years of wisdom and experience in a well organized pattern of instruction, focusing on the "rules" of watercolor. Many modern artist "throw out the rulebook" to the detriment of their artistic outcome. Like learning to read recipes before possessing the inate skills to throw out the cookbook, Jo trains her students in the tried-and-true principles of design and composition that springboard into the creative elements of a seasoned artist. Her work is far from textbook traditionalism ~ benefitting the traditional artist to the abstract. This is also not a book just for beginners, though it is absolutely THE book to have as a beginner! Additionally there is a wealth of excellent paintings from Jo, who is an AWS signature artist, and several other artists. Unlike many "vanity" art books which merely feature the author's artwork with a sprinkling of instruction, Jo's book features numerous paintings as a support for the treasure of instruction which is the driving force of the book.
For the watercolorist dedicated to serious study........2003-05-05
These are lessons and notes which serious students will appreciate having in an organized presentation. Workshop students often are caught up in ptg.and/or keeping up with the class and neglect to take legible notes. The deciphering at a later date,if it happens at all, often times is equal to reading a foreign language. Also, these lessons are passed on to the reader from the author/art instructor's knowledge received from other very well known artists. Many, of which are no longer with us and have become legends.
Much to learn from this book.......2003-04-11
While searching through the vast selection of watercolor books in the city's bookstore, I found this book and feel it is well worth the money I paid for it.
It provides exercises for the reader to practice with watercolor painting, of which involve learning how to control the brush, how to unify and mix colors, and create textures using different effects. My personal favorite lesson of this book is its review of composition. The composition section is a bit hard to understand at first (as is composition in general) but after re-reading the dialog several times, my knowledge of composition in art has improved a great deal.
Though I advise to the readers that this book would be more useful to you if you practice all the exercises, the book will still teach you, even if all you do is simply read and look at the diagrams. I believe this book is most useful for amateur and intermediate watercolor artists, though it may prove to have sound tips for advanced artists as well.

Indolence raised to an art form.Fingerpainting would be an equivelent art form. Outrageous, nurishing recipies. The best thing about a dedicated follower of the semi-religious book, is that the rest of us need never see them. Until the Medical Examiner comes to check out the body...stuck in the formed depression on its couch...they represent the real silent majority. A rollicking tour de force.

Book Description
This is the first detailed history of musical activities at Venetian lay confraternities. Based on over two decades of research in Venetian archives, the book traces musical practices from the origins of the earliest confraternities in the mid-thirteenth century through their suppression under the French and Austrian governments of Venice in the early nineteenth century. The first section of the book treats the scuole grandi, the largest and most important of the Venetian confraternities, and the only ones to maintain musical establishments for long periods. The second portion of the book is concerned with the scuole piccole, the numerous less-important confraternities, sometimes as many as 300 of which were active simultaneously, located in churches throughout Venice. Appendices include an attempt to reconstruct a calendar of musical events at all Venetian confraternities in the early eighteenth century, demonstrating the vital role they played in the cultural and ceremonial life of this great city.

Book Description
In songs, dance, and drama, the fame of the Yoruba of Nigeria is firmly established and universally acknowledged. Also with an established writing and literary tradition, the Yoruba have asserted themselves as a dominant force in the world of creativity, touching on various genres and producing men and women of fame. Such stars are represented here, as in the works of Wole Soyinka and Zulu Sofola. The power of language forms a crucial element of their creativity, with various authors examining the nature of Yoruba language and education, and the multiple uses to which language has been put to compose plays and songs. Chanters of words and famous recorders of music such as Haruna Isola and Fela Anikulapo Kuti are presented in this volume, not as competitors but as companions in the ever-expanding horizons of Yoruba eclectic manifestations of creativity. The future of the language, in the making of new idioms and dictionaries, is examined in an attempt to position the Yoruba and their cultures in the ever-changing world of cultural inventions.
Customer Reviews:
Don't bother, it's not worth it.......2007-04-03
I wanted to like this book. I really did. It's a discussion of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" from a feminist viewpoint. However, after reading it, I can't really say very many positive things about it. It seemed to me as if every point Roberts made was illogical and simply manipulated the episodes to suit the point she was trying to make. Part of the problem is that it was based a lot on French feminism, which I find uneven at times, but there is good writing that stems from it, and this is not it. Roberts contradicted herself, and used to the same evidence in various parts of the book to come to different conclusions.
I was hoping she might redeem herself in the conclusion, as I often found authors have more coherency in their conclusions, but no. The conclusion was just another ruined analysis, this time of "Voyager". When I finally put the book down, I was relieved.
Uneven.......2000-02-07
I don't really know what to think of this book! Sometimes the author seems to be making a good point, and at others she goes way off the deep end. I think she's been spending way too much time sitting in Women's Studies classes and really gets into Star Trek too much. It's just a show; we should really just relax.
Data as Stepford Wife.......2000-01-17
Got your attention, didn't I? This book explores the different depictions of gender in Star Trek Next Generation. It addresses issues that have made me vaguely uneasy about the series and explores their meaning within the STNG "universe." (I'm referring to issues like race, gender roles, and the "other" as metaphor.) This is definitely NOT a study for those who adhere to the Star Trek canon. However, if you're open alternate points of view, you'll really enjoy "Sexual Generations." The only critisism I have is that I think the authors should have expanded their study to include fanfic -- which often pushes the limits of gender much more radically than Star Trek Next Generation ever did.

Book Description
This one-of-a-kind guide to balancing motherhood and work is based on actual journals kept by a group of IBM women during their visits to the company's employee lactation room.
It all began when IBM manager Cate Colburn-Smith sat down in the company's employee lactation room, shed a few silent tears, and wrote the following on a paper towel: I'm a new mom and today is my first day back at work. Is anyone else using this room?
Right away women responded, and the paper towel was eventually replaced by a series of notebooks, in which women offered one another advice and support on juggling work and a newborn. Based on the original notebooks, The Milk Memos is a heartwarming, encouraging (and often hilarious!) guide to working motherhood.
It's one of the most existential moments any woman will face: sitting in a small room tucked away in the bowels of your company, pumping breast milk for a child so close to your heart-yet, at that moment, so far away. The Milk Memos records the voices of mothers who, while struggling with the difficulties of blending their two lives, prove that women don't have to choose between work and family. Their thoughts on how it can be done will inspire women everywhere. This invaluable book weaves the actual Milk Memos journal entries with information-packed sections on such topics of great concern to working moms as:
- finding a private place to pump breast milk at work and establishing a routine that you can maintain despite your busy workday;
- establishing the right daycare solution;
- getting a decent night's sleep with a new baby so that you can shine (or at least glimmer!) during business hours; and
- negotiating flextime, part-time, or a job share with an employer.
The ultimate gift for any new mom who will soon return to work, The Milk Memos is destined to become a classic on the parenting shelf.
Customer Reviews:
Really hit home!!.......2007-09-28
I really can't say enough good things about this book. As a breastfeeding mom who just returned to work a few days ago, this book was a godsend. I've never read a book that was so informative, touching, and hilarious rolled all into one. It helped me to be prepared for the difficulties of working and pumping that I would face, and helped me to get organized enough to make sure I had everything I needed to make working and breastfeeding a success. It EVEN gave me the courage and information needed to request (and receive!) a place to pump privately at my workplace when I had previously thought that I was going to be resigned to pumping in the women's bathroom. I also appreciated the book's non-judgemental tone: it presented breastfeeding as the best-possible solution for feeding our babies but it did not scoff at those women who find themselves struggling with it (as many of us have) or not interested in doing it long-term.
A must read for nursing moms .......2007-07-30
Like other reviews says, it's an absolute must read for nursing moms. When I read it I felt as if I were reading my own life/feelings. The book will make you smile, laugh, and cry.
Milk Moms Unite!.......2007-07-09
I am a working, milking mom. I read the Milk Memos while pumping at work and love it. This book has made me laugh out loud and brought tears to my eyes. It puts into words so much of what I (and other new moms I imagine) are feeling once we return to work after maternity leave. I read the book every day while pumping and feel that I am part of the milk club! The book is full of encouragement for pumping moms struggling to balance the demands of their babies, bosses and [...]!
A Must Buy! It's like a Girlfriend's Guide to breastfeeding while working........2007-06-15
I'm an attorney who nursed my first child for 2 years. Now I'm nursing a second. This book captures dead on the trials and tribulations of working while nursing. Pumping while on business trips, leaking milk onto your blouse, nursing while on a conference call -- it's all in there! I'm buying it for all of my pregnant working moms.
A must for all new moms.......2007-05-25
This is a must gift for all new moms. Fantastic.

Tells it like it is!!.......2005-08-02
Unless you struggle IF you will never know the pain and heartache. In this book you will see what we go through. You will laugh and cry with each entry.
Another reviewer wrote, "Too much info" If more people spoke out the stigma and embaressment and shame we go threw would lessen.
Thanks Robin for being so couragious to write this book.

Very honest and open with her infertility struggles.......2005-07-21
I was able to read Ms lee's book in 2 hours. I did not read every little detail, I found all the indepth journalling to be more than I wanted to know, but it highlighted her struggles and determination to have a baby. I did not find it helpful per se. IMO it is the kind of book that is best shared with family and friends who know you personally. A great book for her to share with her son one day...
A true representation!.......2005-07-21
This journal is very open and honest. I couldn't stop reading once I started it! The author does a wonderful job of capturing the rollercoaster ups and downs of trying to conceive a child. There are a lot of emotions, both good and bad, that go along with this process and they are all shared within this journal. Financial and social struggles are also seen along the way. This journal is a very good description of the nightmare that infertility can be.
Amazing honesty.......2005-07-20
There aren't many people in this world that would open up their most private wishes, struggles and disappointments for others to experience through publishing. This book is a must read for anyone who has struggled or is struggling with infertility - as well as their friends and family members. I read this book in one sitting. It was so compelling to see how each attempt came out that you can't stop reading. I thank the author for sharing her journey with us. And I heartily congratulate her on having the family and son that she fought so long and hard for.
Inspiring book!.......2005-07-18
The story of Ms. Lee's journey through infertility is a 'must read' for anyone embarking on their quest for a child. Those who have not experienced this heartache would benefit from learning what it is like to yearn for a child who is seemingly so out-of-reach. It really makes you count your blessings!

Book Description
We are losing. Four years and two wars after September 11, 2001, the United States is no closer to victory in the war on terror. In fact, we are unwittingly clearing the way for the next attack. In this provocative new book, Daniel Benjamin and Steven Simon show how the terrorist threat is evolving with a broadening array of tactics, an army of new fighters, and, most ominously, a widening base of support in the global Muslim community. The jihadist movement has been galvanized by the example of 9/11 and the missteps of the U.S. government, which has consistently failed to understand the nature of the new terror. Left on this trajectory, much worse faces us in the near future. It doesnt have to be this way. The Next Attack makes the case that America has the capacity to stem the tide of Islamic terrorism, but Benjamin and Simon caution that this will require a far-reaching and creative new strategy, one that recognizes that the struggle has been over-militarized and that a campaign for reform must be more than rhetoric and less than bayonets. And they point out how Americas increasing tendency to frame the conflict in religious terms has undermined our ability to advance our interests. Is America truly equipped to do what is necessary to combat Islamist terrorism, or are we too blinded by our own ideology? The answer to that question will determine how secure we will truly be in the years and decades to come.

What went wrong.......2007-10-05
I will be short and succinct in this review. The authors contend in this book that U.S. military interventions are jeopardizing the war against radical Islamists. They describe terrorists' use of the Internet to spread their ideology, the role of Christian evangelism in foreign policy, and the influence of Muslims in America.
The authors also share their opinion that there have been no more attacks in the U.S.A. because of the easier targets given to the terrorist in Iraq. But believe that they will strike America again as they share the many failures in Homeland Security. This lack of security in the U.S.A. may be sobering, but sadly not surprising.
our foreign policy failures.......2007-01-17
In their bestseller The Age of Sacred Terror; Radical Islam's War Against America (2002), a widely hailed book that won the Arthur Ross Book Prize given by the Council on Foreign Relations, Benjamin and Simon warned about the threat of terrorism to the United States, a threat which they insisted we did not understand and failed to counter. Then came the September 11 attacks which made them prophets. In their new book the authors warn that more than four years later we still persist in misunderstanding our adversary, and that we face grievous consequences unless we change our thinking, our strategies, and our policies.
Not quite half way through their book the authors summarize: "It is simply no longer possible to maintain that the United States is winning the war on terror" (p. 126). Despite some limited successes, and the authors are careful to acknowledge these, we have failed at almost every critical juncture. First, in a failure of vision we have linked terrorism to rogue states, or almost exclusively to Al Qaeda, instead of understanding the dynamic of numerous independent non-state actors that function alone. Terrorism is more like a "deadly mold," to quote one analyst, rather than like a "deadly snake" that the administration claims it will behead. In a failure of strategy, we have militarized the problem and what we think is the solution, thinking that sheer force can annihilate the enemy. In their view we have already lost the even more important war of Muslim public opinion. Third, the Iraq war has been a monumental disaster in the authors's opinion. We have played right into the hands of the jihadists, confirmed their view of world history that infidels from the west want to occupy and control their land, created a recruiting bonanza for terrorists around the world, and with Guantánamo and Abu Ghraib we have caused Muslims to view us not only as infidels but as hypocrites who do not honor human rights, rule of law, or democracy. Fourth, the internet revolution has fueled jihadist rage and sense of epic heroism, much like television brought the Vietnam war into the living rooms of Americans. The video of the beheading of Nicholas Berg, to mention one gruesome example, was downloaded at least 15 million times. Technical know-how for bomb-making on the internet makes terrorist training camps almost obsolete. Finally, Benjamin and Simon point to trends in American culture at large that go beyond any single administration. In particular they point to conservative Protestants who have supported Bush en masse, supported Israel uncritically to the detriment of Palestinians, and made despicable and inexcusably disparaging remarks about Islam (cf. James Dobson, Jerry Falwell, Franklin Graham, Pat Robertson, Charles Colson, and many others), all of which has reinforced the radical jihadists' stereotypes of America and their view of global history that the pagan infidels of the west want to destroy them. The Madrid bombings on March 11, 2004, in which rogue jihadists detonated ten bombs simultaneously, show how vulnerable we have made ourselves with these multiple failures.
Why have we not been attacked since September 11? The authors give credit where it is due, but go on to argue that terrorists have no need to attack hard targets in America when they have a field day in Iraq and limitless soft targets in places like Madrid, London, Bali, and Chechnya. But, more ominous still, they believe they will strike here again, with their trademarks of patience and perfectionism, which makes their long section on our many failures in Homeland Security sobering reading. Our preoccupation with a military offensive has shorted the need for pre-emptive defense. Let us pray that Benjamin and Simon are wrong, but they were right in their first book, so let us pray that people listen to them more carefully this time.
Perceptions and Reality.......2006-04-17
The central core of this book is that the United States is 'losing' the War on Terror because, in a nutshell, the Bush Administration has no concept of either the enemy or the war that the US is actually involved in. The War that the US is fighting is actually aiding and abetting the real foe - Militant Islam.
Bush and his administration are fighting 'states' so the US invades Iraq and Afghanistan - set piece battles that the US excels at. But Militant Islam is basically everywhere now in enemy states (Iran and Sudan) friendly states (Pakistan and Egypt) and even old alles (Great Britain and Germany). So who does the US invade now?
In Iraq itself the US had simply provided a 'terror school' for equipment and methods (the book is very good here) - the Militants are learning quickly and spreading the information back to their home countries. Attacks in Spain, Great Britain, Indoesnia show they are spreading the information very well.
The book also does a good job on Homeland Security - it is very disquieting to read that the US is probably less safe now. Intradepartmental squabbles, unclear priorities (and old boy cronyism)and wasted time and money leave the US vulnerable to the next 'big event' that Bin Laden and Al Queda is plotting.
The book is harshly critical of Bush and his chief advisors ( I imagine that explains the 'one star' reviews). But the book is far closer to the harsh reality of the war on terror that the US is presently engaged in.
The Next Attack.......2006-02-18
This is another book about the war, were have all these people come from,I have never seen so many books about bin laden, where were all these so called experts before 9/11. Just another newpaper man jumping on the bandwagon, and trying to make a fast buck.
We need the truth about what is going on, not speculation and spin,is there anyone with the TRUE STORY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Overwrought and Under Researched.......2006-01-18
The Next Attack is one of the latest - and worst - examples of popcorn political diatribes that lack substance, intellectual heft and reasoned analysis. Unlike Through our Enemies' Eyes and Imperial Hubris, the Next Attack makes unsubstantiated histrionic pronouncements and offers the authors' opinions dressed up as meaningful observations.
Moreover, they offer little to give meaning to the subtitle of the book - there is virtually nothing of substance relating to "a strategy for getting it right." If you're only going to read one book about what's right and wrong (and there is a great deal wrong with it) this, unfortunately, isn't it.
