5 out of 5 stars Essentials/Abstraction.......2007-01-10

The elation of discovery when I read in the very first paragraph of this book...*the word abstraction...simply means the act of drawing out the essential qualities in a thing, a series of things or a situation*. This is what the book is about throughout--rhythmic flows and patterns.

Examples from this book include mention of several instances in which the orgonome or teardrop form exists in nature--in the pull of a magnetic field, in the shape of an apple seed and in the form of a ducks body, and how the jet form of water creates the same shape of a common mushroom sliced in half...as well as numerous other forms illustrated that may surprise the reader.

I could give many more examples, but the great thing about this book is that it is no mere science lesson--all the information is given in relation to art and art making. Numerous large and smaller photos and illustrations all in black & white, taken from nature and art, along with suggested drawing exercises, assist the visual type of person to more fully grasp the points made. The final brief chapter is on Color in Nature.

This book is exactly what I hoped it would be, when I ordered it based on the title alone...

Concepts not easily grasped by the beginner/intermediate(like myself), but I know that I will go back to this book again and again as my skills grow.

Not my idea of a gift book which is why I bought it. The photos do seem to have good values and a deeper look at the content could be rewarding. Just beware if you prefer art books in color. Also, the 1993 paperback with same title/author came to me with a different cover photo.

Hale has thought deeply on the meaning of forms and has found endless relationships between them. All organic matter follows laws which are written into their structure. For the artist, understanding these laws means that each new object is no longer unique, but part of a larger whole. This means that each new object (water mountains, trees, bodies) can be related to others, making the "new" object more familear

          Book Description

Georgia O’Keeffe: Nature and Abstraction–published for the exhibition at Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin–explores O’Keeffe’s method of transforming known or recognizable objects into painted abstractions that express the essential elements of form, color, and allusion. This catalog presents O’Keeffe’s oeuvre through a selection of paintings that display her penchant for abstract forms derived from her personal observation of the natural world. It displays the development of her aesthetic vocabulary, as well as it’s evolution–as seen through her later work which she created well into the 1970s. Also presented are examples of O’Keeffe’s personal inspirations, such as flowers, trees, dried bones, and aerial perspectives, as well as her favorite places, such as New York City and New Mexico.

4 out of 5 stars When did the French stop riding bikes........2002-02-09

I don't want to belittle Grahams work, or imply that I don't like seeing the shots of the American riders, but leaving out the other great riders of the last 20 years is a little sad. I understand this was an editing decision and not really Grahams.

I'm amazed at how he can take photos that convey the athletic endeavor in addition to the excitement, determination, and grandeur of these events. If your year starts with the Race of the Flowers and ends with the Race of the Falling Leaves, these are the vignettes of imagination.

                      3 out of 5 stars selected photos.......2001-02-15

Certainly Graham Watson is a great cycling photographer and deserves every accolade. But I purchased this book "on approval" and found when I really looked through it, many of the pictures had obscure subjects and less interesting stories. There is an honesty in that this is a review of Graham Watson's career--it does not claim to be a photo history of professional cycling. So it includes many photos less interesting to a cycling fan, but with more meaning for Graham Watson's career. Especially true in the section of black and whites taken as an amateur. Without question, the photographic and print quality are stunning, but I often found myself scratching my head wondering if a given shot could possibly be the best shot he took at that race on that day of that rider. Many of the pictures in this book really look like leftovers from an assignment. I've read European cycling magazines for years, and I feel you could get a much better selection of shots by subscribing to one of them for a year and/or picking up one of their annuals. Ironically, you hear almost exclusively in the US about Graham Watson--this book made me realize how many other great cycling photographers there must be.

5 out of 5 stars The Agony and the Ecstacy and the Beauty of It All.......2001-01-17

Graham Watson is the pre-eminent photographer of professional cycling, at least in English-language publications. A few minutes of leafing through this gorgeous book is all that is necessary to explain why this is so. For two decades, he has been there, capturing all the great riders in their glorious moments of triumph as well as the bleakness that comes with physical collapse and defeat. Bicycle road racing is like no other sport in the physical demands that it makes on its participants. It requires amazing conditioning and, even more importantly, a resolve beyond anything a normal person can imagine. One need only think of Greg Lemond, coming back to win the Tour de France after almost dying from gunshot wounds; Laurent Jalabert, his face smashed in after a high-speed collision with a policeman, returning to become the number one rider in the peloton; Lance Armstrong, overcoming cancer and winning the Tour de France twice; Andy Hampsten, riding through the freezing mountains to claim the pink jersey of the Giro; the men of Paris-Roubaix, flailing through the mud and banging over the cobbles. Graham Watson was there to record all of this in his superb style, where no detail is unnoticed. And he shows us the grand arenas where these heroes ride: the villages of rural France, the jagged Alps, the green Pyrenees. Sure, everyone will tell you that this is just another professional sport, with big contracts and illegal drugs and oversized egos, but when you look at these magnificent pictures, you will see brave men riding against grand landscapes, against relentless opponents and even against themselves. Graham Watson's books (Kings of the Road, The Great Tours and so forth) seem to sell for a short time and then disappear from the market. This book contains some photos published in the other ones, but is the best collection I have seen covering so many racing highlights that I can recommend it without reservation for lovers of bike racing, good photography and Europe.

Sometimes it is not so great being a Greek mythological figure part of the time. To whit - you get enemies like Medusa, and end up on entirely different worlds, at times.

Plus, rich, handsome, powerful men have ulterior motives and have many plans for you. All this from a distant past that you do not remember at all.

Some Snappy Sappy Comebacks: Living with you is like having a cell phone with a million free minutes, but no one to talk to. You're right. I'm wrong. You win. I lose, but I still don't want to see you again. You'd be your own worst enemy, if you didn't have me. You've messed up more minds than a drunken brain surgeon. Welcome to the wild and wooly, yet sometimes slyly subtle, world of Bill Roddey as he shares his thoughts, delusions, and rants from his humor columns, short stories and poems about “My Evil Twin Earl,” “People Who Shouldn't Be Cloned,” “Martha Stewart Prison Living,” “The Man Who Just Stopped Talking,” “Skip a Lip a Lop Land,” “I Am An Idiot,” “Bring Back Panty Raids,” “Living Normally on High Alert,” “Talking With the Testy Dead,” among others. Buckle up, it's gonna be a bumpy read through lunacy and lucidity.

                            Book Description

Dangerous, outrageous, comic and committed, the extraordinary performers collected here have altered the history of popular entertainment in America and Europe. Some have rarely had their story told, others are familiar figures. The essays explore what made these performers extraordinary; how they were trained, how they practiced their art, how they were received, celebrated, satirized and mythologized. From the explosive acting of Richard Burbage to the dislocating quirkiness of Peter Lorre, from the dangerous satire of commedia dell'arte troupes in Russia to the bittersweet collaboration of Morecambe and Wise, this volume explores what made these actors popular. Each contributor has taken care to set the performer and their work in cultural context, so that the collection as a whole charts the changing relationship between acting and popular culture over the last four hundred years. Part One examines seventeenth- and eighteenth-century performers, as they built a sense of the excitement and possibility of theatre with audiences in Britain and Europe. The idea of acting, its art and popular practice was being formed during this period. Part Two explores nineteenth-century popular performers who became cultural icons and developed popular performance that contributed to the regeneration of national identity. Part Three looks at twentieth-century performers whose acting continued to reach popular audiences in remarkable ways, across national boundaries, as the acting industry underwent transformation in the face of technological change.

                            5 out of 5 stars Beth's Hidden Talent.......2007-02-24

I loved this book, couldn't put it down without finishing it! I'll admit that it might not have the same appeal to a non GL fan, but I found the writing to be surprisingly very good. Perhaps Beth is in the wrong business here (not that I ever want her to leave the show).

After Lorelei surfaced in Springfield, there were too many holes in the story that the GL writers presented to us. We all had many unanswered questions. Beth's book gives us a believable account of what could very well have happened to Beth Raines Spaulding her in her absence from the show. I have recommended this book to so many friends and have even loaned my own copy out.

Soap fans need more of this kind of fiction!

1 out of 5 stars VERY Disappointing book.......2002-07-31

I am a huge fan of Guiding Light, but this book does not live up to my expectations. Only a few details were added to what was seen on the show. Where is the emotion and romance that fans have come to expect? I bought this book hoping to read more about Lorelei's relationship with Bill Lewis and really didn't learn anything interesting about Lorelei or Beth. Not worth the money I spent!

                            1 out of 5 stars What a let down.......2002-07-31

Would have rated lower if I could. Does not provide much new information to what you've seen on the show if you are a fan.

1 out of 5 stars Save your money!.......2002-07-28

It's hard to focus on the content of this book - what little there is - when trying to muddle through the grammatical and mechanical errors. (I understand this is written as a diary - but come on! At least insert some personality in order to compensate for poor writing skills!) There's not much of a story to sink your teeth into and there's no continuity between the events of the book and the current storyline that is in place for the character. Ms. Chamberlin is a fine actress whose character is an important part of the show's long history; I'm hopeful she'll keep her day job!

                                      Book Description

In his seminal work The Clash of Civilizations and the Remaking of World Order, Samuel Huntington argued provocatively and presciently that with the end of the cold war, "civilizations" were replacing ideologies as the new fault lines in international politics.

His astute analysis has proven correct. Now Professor Huntington turns his attention from international affairs to our domestic cultural rifts as he examines the impact other civilizations and their values are having on our own country.

America was founded by British settlers who brought with them a distinct culture including the English language, Protestant values, individualism, religious commitment, and respect for law. The waves of immigrants that later came to the United States gradually accepted these values and assimilated into America's Anglo-Protestant culture. More recently, however, national identity has been eroded by the problems of assimilating massive numbers of primarily Hispanic immigrants, bilingualism, multiculturalism, the devaluation of citizenship, and the "denationalization" of American elites.

September 11 brought a revival of American patriotism and a renewal of American identity. But already there are signs that this revival is fading, even though in the post-September 11 world, Americans face unprecedented challenges to our security.

Who Are We? shows the need for us to reassert the core values that make us Americans. Nothing less than our national identity is at stake.

Once again Samuel Huntington has written an important book that is certain to provoke a lively debate and to shape our national conversation about who we are.\

This book helps enlighten those who deride as "racist" other Americans who are against illegal immigration. The dangers to our society are real. While Huntington didn't cover every aspect of "Americanism" throughout American history (the book would have been too long of course), he did touch on the essence of what it means to be an American.

                                      1 out of 5 stars Flawed reasoning.......2007-08-30

Dr. Huntington starts his book with 58 pages of American history but devotes less than one paragraph to slavery.

Considering over 600,000 Americans died in the Civil War (proportionally, that would be over 3 million Americans today), there is only one word for a Harvard professor who would try to describe "who are we" while disregarding the most significant issue of our country's history: Bigot.

4 out of 5 stars Honest, Challenging Talkwise Political Correctness.......2007-01-30

Dr. Huntington's book caused alot of upheaval in academia because it dared to say what others will not out of fear of disrupting the multicultural establishment. This book asked the difficult questions which demand honest debate and tough answers. I would encourage anyone to read this who is interested in the cultural transformation our nation has undergone over the past fourty years and where we are heading.

3 out of 5 stars The new political bible of neoconservatives?.......2006-12-14

I have read 'The Clash of Civilizations' few years ago, and it didnt make sense to me at that time. Of course after 9/11 the picture became clear. The Clash of Civilizations was the bible of US foreign policy during Bush Administration. Of course the book was faulty in theory and now it is clear how in practice the Bush Adminstration is suffering.

This applies for this book in hand. It is focused internally. I dont claim that I undestand the US internal politics. However, I can see from this book that the current governing minority senses a threat from a growing minority 'Hispanics', which will shift the power balance in the coming 10-20 years.

Again, the book theory doesn't make sense. It profess discrimination under new political titles by doing the following:
                                      - He differentiate between immigrants based on the period of immigration, to conclude that since the early immigrants founded US then they have more rights to shape its future.
                                      - He differentiates between immigrants based on their original cultures and relgion. Since US was founded by Anglo Protestant immigrants, it should continue with a storng Anglo Protestnat culture.

Any political leader who adopts this books theories will take US to a path of civil war.

                                      A couple of interesting points:

To read about the transformation from Secular to Religious states, even in the developed countries, (Pages 355, 356/7/8) and that Islam and Christianity are `competing worldwide for converts and gaining them ......'.
Perhaps the reason is because people are beginning to realize how the gist of the teachings of any religion (Jewish, Christian and Muslim) as a restraining influence, which clearly proves the insanity of aggressive wars.
Generations of `Ideologies' fought each other's.
Religions did not fight each other's.
True, certain groups of Christians (the Crusaders) aggressively fought groups of Muslims but the real purpose was indeed political, not religious, because they did not fight `Islam' per se.
Even when the Christians fought Christians, and the Muslims fought Muslims (as recent as in the twentieth century) the real motivations were purely mundane - commercial, financial, greed, expansionism and power possessiveness.
The theory that `war is a biological necessity, it carries out among humankind the natural law of the struggle for existence' has failed. The world has lost millions of people in the last Century when the warring parties stood away from the deep teachings of their religion, and the victor actually suffered equally with the vanquished.

On Page 299 concerning intermarriages `the melting pot is working, but it is working at the individual, not the societal, level ....." It is proven that speaking the language of the country of `the new residence' is not enough for one to migrate into `the new societies', simply because there is not one society, instead there are different and dissimilar societies grappling to live in `one' country.
The advent of Anglophone (or Francophone) is more cultural and less social.
Some Muslim crowds, for example, milling in the streets and massed in hundreds in front of the mosque to pray is indicative that their `new' societies did not run so deep, and their instinctive attachments to their roots remain nostalgic, like telling everyone "by the power of `force-majeure' our fathers and grandfathers came here looking for better means of subsistence having waited in the ultimate dim in our countries of origin to find it, but couldn't".
On the `callers' announcement to the crowd, they are cheered up peacefully and rushed off here to vent their feelings in the course of lack of natural affinity for how the `new' societies live.
It is noticeable how Muslims and Christians from the Middle East flock together, cook and eat their food from `Home', and go back to their mother tongues as the means for two-way-communication.
The same applies to ethnic groups from Mexico, Ireland, and the Italians etcetera.
But the challenge in America (and the West) is when the different `ethnic' groups remain reticent, (or at most hate), from mixing with the so-called `white Americans', and take `Religion' as a `Shield'.
The danger though is when such groups transform themselves into fortresses, once the mobilization button is pushed.
