Book Description
How exactly has San Francisco's urban landscape changed in the hundred years since the earthquake and cataclysmic firestorms that destroyed three-quarters of the city in 1906? For this provocative rephotography project, bringing past and present into dynamic juxtaposition, renowned photographer Mark Klett has gone to the same locations pictured in forty-five compelling historic photographs taken in the days following the 1906 earthquake and fires and precisely duplicated each photograph's vantage point. The result is an elegant and powerful comparison that challenges our preconceptions about time, history, and culture. "I think the pictures ask us to become aware of the extraordinary qualities of our own distinct moment in time. But it is a realization that a particular future is not guaranteed by the flow of time in any given direction." So says Mark Klett discussing this multilayered project in an illuminating interview included in this lavishly produced volume, which accompanies an exhibition at The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco.
After the Ruins, 1906 and 2006 features a vivid essay by noted environmental historian Philip Fradkin on the events surrounding and following the 1906 earthquake, which he describes as "the equivalent of an intensive, three-day bombing raid, complete with many tons of dynamite that acted as incendiary devices." A lyrical essay by acclaimed writer Rebecca Solnit considers the meaning of ruins, resurrection, and the evolving geography and history of San Francisco.

Photos from the 1906 Fire (Earthquake) of San Francisco.......2007-06-26
I received this book along with another one called: "Denial of Disaster: The Untold Story and Photographs of the San Francisco",by Gladys Hansen.
Both books are wonderful to read together because the book by Hansen describes what happened during and after the 1906 Fire (and/or 1906 Earthquake), and this book by Fradkin shows more photos from the tragic event. Thus, I recommend both books highly.
An important documentation of how urban disasters change urban landscapes.......2006-08-19
AFTER THE RUINS: 1906 AND 2006 - REPHOTOGRAPHING THE SAN FRANCISCO EARTHQUAKE AND FIRE has been a century in the making, and deserves a spot on any collection purported to be even halfway authoritative about San Francisco or California history. Its purpose seemed simple: to capture the meaning and impact of the 1906 quake through juxtaposing 'before' and 'after' photos, right down to the very angle of original landscapes. The idea was to also document how the city's landscape changed because of and since the quake: black and white and duotone photos by photographer Karin Breuer compliment essays by Philip L. Fradkin and Rebecca Solnit, longtime writers on California history, compliment an outstanding survey. College-level holdings on urban planning and design also should make this a special pick: it's an important documentation of how urban disasters change urban landscapes.

Funny Men?.......2000-04-15
British Prime Ministers (with a few memorable exceptions) learn to see themselves in a less than serious light thanks to continual press bombardment. Failed Prime Ministers see their successful colleagues in a more comical light still. So it is that Kenneth Baker, who rose to the dizzy heights of Education Secretary, has compiled this collection of irreverent cartoons from across the ages of politics, lambasting the great and the bad in equal measure, right up to John Major. There are some genuinely funny moments, but a lot has changed in art and humour since 1840 and some sections of the book are for fanatic cartoonists only.

Oh, wow! EXCELLENT!.......2002-01-21
The back cover describes this as "a wholly unprecedented form of novelistic photojournalism."
It's unprecedented, alright. I've never seen anything like it. If you appreciate photography, and/or you're fascinated with psychology, and you have the intellectual curiosity to enjoy a new kind of documentary, buy this book.
The last time a book had this strong an effect on me was when I read Dalton Trumbo's "Johnny Got His Gun" in high school. Since then I've read many hundreds, perhaps thousands of books. I read an average of 4 books a week. I haven't seen anything really fresh for a very long time.

Book Description
An immortal being who has died 1,000 deaths, Saint Germaine has traversed the paths of mankind for untold years with his companion, Lilith. But Lilith's disappearance and the perils of the modern world direct him to undertake a new quest - to surrender his immortality.
Customer Reviews:
Fascinating and Intelligent.......2006-03-15
Saint Germaine is a man who lives forever and he is an amalgate of many people that have lived before as he takes the memories of those dying. This allows the writer, Gary Reed, to cover quite a bit of historical ground as he reaches into the past to pull out some compelling reading. Topics such as The Crusades, the Nazi concentration camps, the life of Franz Kafka, the Salem Witch trials...all blend seamlessly into this narration.
And Saint Germaine isnt't the only one. He has his long time companion, Lilith who also does the same. These two are now opposed to each other so it makes for some great reading.
this is just a fantastic story and I'm looking for some of the other issues since this only has five issues in it. I found one dealing with Casanova and another with The Man in the Iron Mask and those are equally as good.
In an interview, someone compared Saint Germaine and Gary Reed to Sandman and Neil Gaiman. They're not the same, but they're equally as good.
Saint Germaine is a must read and I'll be sure to be look for anything else by Gary Reed...he's my new favorite writer.

Book Description
This superbly varied collection offers more than 400 pieces of music from the Baroque period to the present. Selected by Thomas Benjamin, Michael Horvit, and Robert Nelson--three nationally respected composers and music theory teachers--the selections enable students to analyze a wide variety of genres, styles, textures, and composers that illustrate standard usage and idiomatic procedures. Featuring both excerpts and many complete pieces, Music for Analysis, Sixth Edition, is the perfect vehicle for analysis of style, musical idiom, small forms, tonal harmony, and contemporary techniques. "Questions for Analysis" in each unit provide pointed, perceptive guidance throughout the book. A detailed checklist and model analysis in Appendix A provide a useful summary for students who are learning to analyze music. Features of the Sixth Edition: * Includes a free audio CD of more than 140 examples from the text played on the piano, harpsichord, or organ by Dr. Rosilee Walker Russell, Artist-in-Residence at the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith * In addition to the complete pieces included from the previous edition, the authors have added several new complete works, including "Gavea" by Darius Milhaud and a complete Mozart sonata * Integrates many new model analyses into the body of the text, helping students to achieve a comprehensive analysis of the music * Includes contrapuntal examples from composers other than Bach * Provides precise measure numbers for all excerpts from larger pieces * Adds an index of all complete pieces (supplementing the index of composers and making selections easier to find)

Good Job.......2007-02-03
Nice and speedy. Only took a few days and it came in great condition. Thanks
Just Got It.......2006-08-24
Received it in a timely manner, a lot different from other theory books I've seen but looks like it'll be good in class. Haven't used it yet, but gives many, many musical examples with a few questions at the beginning of each section.
Good for teaching or study!.......2000-10-24
This book is organized by terms of harmonic content. The book is divided into three sections: Diatonic Materials, Chromatic Materials, and Twentieth Century Materials. It contains an analytic checklist and sample analysis that can be used as a guide to the student. An index of composers makes it easy to study the musical style of a particular composer. The excerpts can be played by any competant keyboard player. This book contains mostly excerpts, but a few sections that contain a complete piece or movement of a piece. The selections are not analyzed, which makes for fun practice at analyzing them yourself!

Book Description
The implications of globalization for labor are more often asserted than analyzed. This collection, and its companion volume Globalization and Patterns of Labour Resistance edited by Jeremy Waddington, seek to remedy this deficiency by presenting contemporary research on the relationship between the globalization of production and the regulation of labor. It considers the ways in which national and supra-national regimes of labor regulation are being actively reconstructed in the context of the internationalization of production. The contributors analyze the implications of changes in different national labor regimes for relations between state, capital and labor, and for class and gender segmentation, and discuss the scope and limits of recent initiatives in the implementation of international labor standards.

Book Description
What keeps us going when times get tough? How do we act to create a more humane world, no matter how hard it seems? How do we offer models of involvement for our students when many feel their actions cannot matter? The Impossible Will Take a Little While gathers stories and essays of engagement that range across nations, eras, and political movements. These visionary and eloquent voices include Diane Ackerman, Sherman Alexie, Maya Angelou, Mary Catherine Bateson, Ariel Dorfman, Marian Wright Edelman, Eduardo Galeano, Susan Griffin, Vclav Havel, Seamus Heaney, Tony Kushner, Jonathan Kozol, Bill McKibben, Nelson Mandela, Pablo Neruda, Henri Nouwen, Arundhati Roy, Desmond Tutu, Alice Walker, Cornel West, Terry Tempest Williams, and Howard Zinn. Their voices can help us all keep working for a better world, despite the obstacles. In The Impossible Will Take a Little While, a phrase borrowed from Billie Holliday, the editor of Soul of a Citizen brings together fifty stories and essays that range across nations, eras, wars, and political movements. Danusha Goska, an Indiana activist with a paralyzing physical disability, writes about overcoming political immobilization, drawing on her history with the Peace Corps and Mother Teresa. Vaclav Havel, the former president of the Czech Republic, finds value in seemingly doomed or futile actions taken by oppressed peoples. Rosemarie Freeney Harding recalls the music that sustained the civil rights movement, and Paxus Calta-Star recounts the powerful vignette of an 18-year-old who launched the overthrow of Bulgaria's dictatorship. Many of the essays are new, others classic works that continue to inspire. Together, these writers explore a path of heartfelt community involvement that leads beyond despair to compassion and hope. The voices collected in The Impossible Will Take a Little While will help keep us all working for a better world despite the obstacles.

Revied on The Impossible Will Take a Little While.......2007-02-14
Received on time and in a very well condition. Very Satified.
a much needed balm.......2007-01-17
Good things are possible, keep at it, it will take a while, but, it is not impossible! Even the review here at Amazon by Ms. Nina Rosenberg shows the uphill distance we have to go. Let's all keep walking, and even invite Ms Rosenberg along, maybe offer her a cup of tea. Anyhow, I loved this book and feel that we need to sometimes focus on what is good, and what HAS been accomplished and try to understand how it was acomplished so that we too may pave the way to greater peace, for all. Yes, not just for the USA, but for all citizens of the world. If you liked this book, I suspect you might also enjoy a book on non-violence called "nonviolence: twenty five lessons" by Mark Kurlansky.
Don't give up, keep at it, keep the faith, ward off despair!
very readable.......2007-01-12
This book managed to be easy to read despite the large amount of information within its pages. I found it to be inspiring without being too heavy, and informative without leaving me wracked with guilt and anxiety.
Love, Empathy & Hope.......2006-01-23
This is an inspirational compendium from contributers such as Maya Angelou, Jim Hightower, Jonathan Kozol, Nelson Mandela, Arundhati Roy, Desmond Tutu, and Howard Zinn (to name a few). Since the resurgence of the warfare state when Marvin Bush planted bombs in the Twin Towers, which were blown-up after they were hit by planes and the incident blamed on alleged Arabs (see "The New Pearl Harbor" by David Ray Griffin), we have been living an Orwellian nightmare. Just like before when FDR provoked the Japanese to attack Pearl Harbor to make us Yanks war crazy so we would fight the Nazis in Europe and stop Russia from taking it over, we are demoralized and mired in social crisis. Hence, this compilation by editor Paul Loeb is salve to the wounded soul.
Nelson Mandela's contribution is "The Dark Years" when the South African white-led apartheid government incarcerated him and other political prisoners on Robben Island. The inmates organized and maintained their own inmate-led micro-society behind bars, which empowered them and sustained their souls.
Desmond Tutu wrote that people of faith are prisoners of hope. He said that the South African experience was God's beacon of hope, not just to the third world, but Northern Ireland as well.
Howard Zinn's contribution is "The Optimism of Uncertainty". He said "There will always be something to fear in life, but this should not prevent you from living your life, thinking independently, and speaking your mind".
Maya Angelou shared a poem titled "Still I Rise": "Just like moons and like suns, With the certainty of the tides, Just like hopes springing high, Still I rise."
This book is an inspiration to all in peace work.
Hope from start to finish..........2005-12-06
This book is tangible hope in a dark and murky time. The insights gathered in these pages offer a historical bird's eye view of what it means to fight for what is right, no matter the cost. The cross section of stories from around the world unifies disparate groups in a way that is needed on all levels of society today. The book came to me as a gift from a friend, and in the spirit of "Pay It Forward" I made sure that at least 3 other friends got to share in the hope that I enjoyed while reading Paul's work. The stories have further galvanized my personal and politcal beliefs and sent me in some very positive directions working for peace. What started as another casual read quickly became a manual for hope. I reccomend this to all who feel hopeless in light of current events.

Customer Reviews:
A pleasant surprise.......2001-07-16
I read this book back in 1990, and I was quite surprised by it. I thought it was going to be a bland story about a guy raising birds, but it turned out to be a story about an air force officer trying to find himself. ... It is definately worth a read
