Somewhat disappointed..........2005-01-13

While I will admit that this book is very informative, I was slightly disappointed for the same reason I have experienced with some other jewelry books. Of all the pictures only a handful are in color. Always confusing to me why they do this because jewelry is one thing that you really need to see in color to appreciate. I would recommend this book for it's information but if you are looking for great color pictures to go along with the definitions I would pass on buying it.

This book is wonderful! Visually stunning, some of the pictures are enough to make you drool! Filled with extremely well photographed color and B&W photos of museum quality pieces, used to illustrate the jewelry terms being defined. The definitions are well written, and reference related terms in a very smooth and easy to follow way. This book is a MUST if you are fond of jewelry! MORE than worth the money!

From A to Z, the best jewelry dictionary I've seen. Aside from looking something up, it gives you the opportunity to learn terms you've never heard before. Even if you've been in the business a long time. Fantastic. Every antique lover should have this book!

A fantastic book that should challenge Americans to stand up to the facts. The shocking realities that come to light through this book are as telling as those in FAST FOOD NATION. A MUST read.

Made me think..........2004-03-05

This book is AMAZING. Peter Strupp has taken hundreds of statistics about the American way of life and compiled them into this little wonder of a book. At first read, it's very humorous, but when you step back for a moment and consider that all of these statistics are FACTS, it really makes you think about where our culture is heading...

And to 'a reader': if buying a quarter of a million pink flamingos annually doesn't make us dumb, or doesn't highlight the fact that a big percentage of us have bad taste, then waht does?!

A Wake Up Call to America.......2004-03-05

Thank you Peter Strupp, for holding up a mirror of truth to our culture. Sure, America is a marvelous country that has achieved wonderful things. But we're forgetting ourselves. No one improves by resting on their laurels. Our game has gotten sloppy, and it's high time we shape up!

idiotic and cliche.......2004-03-02

does Peter think he;s being unique and witty by presenting us with meaningless statistics? This book is utterly pointless. For one thing, numbers and statistics don't mean anything since you can make numbers say anything you want. Second, the numbers Peter DOES give are useless!!! Who CARES how many people buy plastic flamingos!? is that supposed to show how stupid we are? give me a break. Peter manages to hit on every cliche and stereotype of America. I frankly found this offensive because this is still the greatest country on Earth. Are we perfect? no! by no means!! But this book paints an unrealistically negative point of view. Yes, Americans are fat. But so are many other countries! No, Americans aren't the "smartest" but, we are no dumber than most other countries. Peter seems to think obesity and stupidity are totally unique to America, when this is simply not the case. I beg of you, find something worthwhile to read and don't bother reading about how stupid and ugly we Americans are. Shame on you, Peter. Go move to Iraq and see how you like over there.

Outstanding Introduction to the Waffen-SS.......2007-06-23

Bruce Quarrie's "Hitler's Samurai" (rev. 3d ed.) is an outstanding description of the formation, uniforms, equipment, and battles of the Waffen-SS. The writing is clear, precise, and objective. One wishes that he had been commissioned to write a full-fledged general history of these units instead of writing about them piecemeal in a series of separate works (e.g., Hitler's Teutonic Knights, Lightning Death).

Three things, however, almost prevented a five-star rating:

First, the text repeatedly refers to a bibliography but the book does not include a bibliography (at least not in the third edition).

Second, the author repeatedly (and somewhat annoyingly) refers the reader to other works of his on related topics, which disrupts the flow of the text.

Third, the pictures often lack clarity, even for photographic reproductive abilities at the time this edition was first published, over 20 years ago. (The pictures are well chosen and representative but if the point of a work is to provide a pictorial history of a topic then the pictures need to be well-reproduced not just well selected. This edition would have been better served by being printed originally in hardcover with separate picture sections on glossy paper rather than the cheap stock paper used. A hardcover reprint was later done but as reprints are often of lesser quality than the original I purchased the original paperback edition, which, in retrospect, may have been a mistake.)

Despite its flaws, the book is an excellent reference work. There is a reason this book on the Waffen-SS, unlike so many others, sold out when first printed and revised and expanded second and third editions published: It is one of the best general introductions to the Waffen-SS ever written.

Insightful view of Hitler's most fanatical troops.......2006-05-10

This book provides the reader insight into the men, organization and equipment of Hitler's fanatical SS who were undoubtedly not as fanatical as advertized.

A terrific source of information. A must for history fans........1999-06-21

Bruce Quarrie has done a fine piece of work, with this book. An objective look at the history of the Waffen SS. It shows the armed SS in all its shades. Good selection of photographs help showcase the short, but eventful, history of this group of fighting men, as it should be told. I would, also, reccommend his companion to this title. "Hitler's Teutonic Knights" focuses more on the armored divisions and is another wonderful description of the Waffen SS. Both are a must for WWII fans.

This book was purchased and sent to Iraq to my grandson
who is in the Military Police in Baghdad. He should be
home on a two-week leave next month.

So, I can't review the book. He has the second book by
Gavin DeBeckker, which I purchased from your company and
has indicated he thought it was very good and helpful.

Quick easy read. I wish I had read this right after 9/11 as it has taken me some time to come to the same conclusions this book offers. Even though that is when this book was written to be read, it didn't hurt to get some reasurance I am now on the right track. I like de Becker's style. He seems like a real classy guy.

Excellent Ideas.......2005-09-02

Another hit from Gavin De Becker. Once again his common sense, see-it-for-what-it-is approach is on the mark. After reading this book you will not look at the news media the same, if you care to look at it much at all! The scare tactics thrown in our faces every day take on an almost comical appearance when you see them for what they are. Do yourself a favor and do as the title suggests, read this book and fear less.

de Becker does a good job at putting the risks of terrorism into perspective with other risks we face everyday. Also, de Becker encourages the reader to be informed and aware of situations that could be indicators of trouble. Well worth the read.
