Bargain Books are non-returnable.
From the author of Fathers and Daughters and Mothers and Sons comes this moving tribute to love. In Couples, photographer Mariana Cook presents a stunning collection of black and white images and intimate texts from 60 different couples young, old, rich, poor, gay, straight, famous, unknown offering us a rare glimpse into the diverse meanings of that unique bond. These partners speak in their own words, and yet it is in the glance of the eye, the subtle gesture that the unspoken emotions are expressed in these deceptively simple and honest portraits. In both text and image, Couples is a powerful and moving celebration of not only love, but life, and all of the beauty and magic that is shared by the union of two people.
Customer Reviews:
It Takes All Kinds.......2004-07-23
I found a copy of this book while on vacation in a resort area, and since then I've used it as a wedding present several times. I really like the fact that it features all kinds of couples: gay, straight, interracial, couples of different ages, and couples dealing with disabilities. The photography is haunting and the stories each member of each couple tells emphasize that there are common traits of strong, long-lasting relationships.
A picture is worth.............2000-11-06
Couples: Speaking from the Heart is interesting reading for anyone intriqued by the mystery of relationships. The masterfully done photographs give more richness to the words of people, some famous some not, who attempt to do the impossible: put words to their relationships, how they have succeeded, how they have grown. It makes for entertaining reading, but it also creates in the reader both a desire to understand how relationships work and a wonder that when they do, it is a glorious thing. A different kind of book, but invigorating in its unique way.

The Songs That Launched A Thousand Careers.......2007-04-22
If you enjoy rock and roll, especially the "classic rock" of the 60's and 70's, then you know Willie Dixon, whether you're aware of it or not. His mighty pen wrote music that was made famous by none other than the Rolling Stones, the Doors, Cream, the Grateful Dead, Led Zeppelin and Eric Clapton. This autobiography is an engrossing tale of the hardships and discrimination Dixon had to endure growing up in Mississippi, and his move to Chicago, where his career as a bassist and songwriter took root. Many of the songs that are identified with blues giants Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf were crafted by Willie, who also played bass in the studio recordings.
This book is a must-read for those who have an interest in the blues, early rock n' roll, or music in general.
He was the blues.......2006-12-29
Willie Dixon was a key person in 20th century music. It's a shame that he gets so little recognition in mainstream America. His talent for songwriting was only part of his greatness, though. He was quite a human being.
In this book, we get a look at Willie, what he did, and where he came from. I finished the book feeling as though I understand him as best as I can. And I have a greater appreciation of his music, and pride in the fact that my band plays a small role in keeping Willie's legacy alive.
The fact that much of this book is written in Willie's own words -- that is, with his early-to-mid-1900s southern black dialect -- may throw some people at first, but stories are best told in the language in which they arose. Sanitizing his words would lessen their impact.
The only reason I don't give this book five stars, is because I want more. I would love to have had more pages to read; more interviews with others about Willie; more photos of Willie.
If you like the blues, or even just like the story of someone who went from having nothing (perhaps less than nothing) to a self-taught cultural cornerstone, read this book. Then tell others about what you've learned about Willie Dixon and his inspiring story. And check out Willie's Blues Heaven Foundation.
Willie Dixon is the Blues........2005-05-06
Willie Dixon is the Blues. This book is a first-person window into his extraordinarily brilliant mind, and the adversity he struggled against to become one of the most influential producers in the Blues. Dixon was educated informally by life experience and hardship, and as a Golden Gloves Boxer he trained with Joe Lewis before being banned from the ring and breaking into music with vocal group The Big Three Trio. Speaking with a wisdom that reveals unparalleled optimism and common sense, I Am The Blues is the man responsible for setting up and orchestrating the Chicago Blues on Chess and Cobra Records in the 1950's. He literally wrote the songs to most of the hits for Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf, and gave voice to J.B.Lenoir, Koko Taylor, Little Walter, Otis Rush, and Lafayette Leake. It's not hard to say whether Dixon or Leonard Chess had more pull with the label during those days, as Dixon was responsible for the talent that came through the door. He later had to fight for his own copyrights to collect royalties on his own material. This book is recommended to all musicologists, and any fans of Muddy Waters, or Buddy Guy. All content copyright www.maximumink.com - Brett Lemke
B-O-R-I-N-G.......2002-08-07
This book may be the story of Willie Dixon's music, but it's certainly not Willie's story. I kept waiting to find out more about Willie, the man, but my questions were never answered.
Very Much Agree w/ Review Below....and..........2000-06-03
...also, it is important for whomever is into music recording and songwriting and performing to read this. Talk about being forefront in rhythm and blues and rock & roll and not getting your dues? Dixon, although he did not get all the monetary benefits and fame of a brilliant career, still comes up on top because of his uplifting attitude and strength of character exhibited in his great book. Read it, today.

Book Description
Who were the greatest warriors of all time? This book profiles 50, including Myamoto Musashi, Jim Bowie and Geronimo, who faced overwhelming odds, survived terrible wounds, pulled off hairbreadth escapes and piled enemies in heaps. Their stories read like fiction but are all the more riveting because they are true.
Customer Reviews:
ADVENTUROUS READ!!!!.......2007-10-13
The brisk narrative style and descriptive story telling ability of Paul Kirchner makes for an adventurous read! I was also VERY happy that it was filled with lesser known people and incidents.
Hopefully there is a "BOOK II" ???!!!
Deadliest men.......2006-11-10
This book is very informative and accurate about histories most deadly men and women. Some of the people in this book might surprise you such as baseball great Ty Cobb and Winston Churchill others will not. Originally selling in Paldin Press for 25.00 the price at Amazon is a bargain and is a good reference book for anyone interested in the history of the art of fighting I highly recomend it.
Savage Tales!.......2006-09-28
Whenever you are disgusted with the disgraceful passive-aggressive, anti-confrontational, and indirectly rude bahavior which characterizes our present age, open Mr. Kirchner's excellent tome of warriors! These were people who weren't afraid to go into harm's way. They solved their conflicts with blades, bullets, and bare fists! No "sensitivity training" for these worthy fighters! The author has compiled his list of his favorite fighting men and women, from antiquity to the present. We all have our own list that we would compile in a similar manner, but this list is damned good! I would have included more U.S. Marines, Vikings, Medieval Knights, and Samurai, but this not my book! In here you will find a number of well-known heros and rogues, and many more who should be better known than they are. Here is a sampling:
-Gregory Boyington, the hard-partying, irreverant, and hell-raising Marine Corps fighter-ace of World War II, who flew for the Flying Tigers, and also founded the famous Black Sheep Squadron.
-Delf Bryce, probably the deadliest gun-fighter the FBI ever had, the quintessential G-Man of the 1930s.
-Ty Cobb: I thought, what is a baseball player doing in this book?...then I read about what a savage brawler he was, straight out of an R.E. Howard pulp-novel! Conan would be proud!
-Peter Francisco, a giant in Washington's army, who was a one man army himself! A man so strong, he carried an artillery piece off the battlefield so the British wouldn't capture it! Heres a patriot who needs a monument!
-Jean Louis, a Haitian swordmaster in Napoleaon's army, who originally found himself harassed because of his nationality. Nobody harassed him when he demonstrated his skill with the blade.
-Jose Llulla, another master swordsman: A gentleman from Spain who became a famous duellist in 19th century New Orleans.
-Takeda Sokaku, a 20th century samurai and master of the martial-arts, one of the last true exponents of Bushido. Although he would likely have been happier in Japan's Age of Wars, he found plenty of action in our time!
-Egil Skallagrimson, one of the most savage Vikings ever, he survived a lifetime of feuds with Norway's King Eric Blood-axe. No matter how many warriors the king sent to eliminate Egil, the body count kept rising! Egil died of old age on his farm in Iceland.
-Nancy Wake, an Australian volunteer in the French resistance in World War II, and later an agent in the Special Operations Executive. There were a number of deadly female agents such as herself that should be more well-known.
Aside from these, read about the heroic exploits of young Winston Churchill, or James Bowie, Wild Bill Hickok, Robert the Bruce, and Miyamoto Musashi. Included within are accounts of three Luftwaffe aces Hartmann, Marssielle, and Rudel, and other famous aviators. You will find the exploits of Shaka Zulu and his champion Mbogozi, or Geronimo, in his prolonged fight against Mexican and U.S. soldiers.
Some of these people fought for their nation in war, some for survival, for enforcement of the law, or for personal honor. Some of them..just liked to fight! Its an essay on the value of bravery, self-reliance, and the will to win!
Real-life action heroes.......2006-06-19
A quick, interesting, and fun read! Kirchner profiles 50 of the deadliest solo fighters of all time in 44 chapters, from brawlers to duelists (both sword and gun varieties) to fighter pilots. On occasion two or more warriors are listed in a single chapter. While one could argue whether or not these men and women truly represent the top 50, you cannot argue that their heroic tales are anything less than fascinating (if a bit pithy in some cases). This fun book has a smattering of historical photos as well as illustrations from the author to give readers a good idea of what these folks looked like too. Despite the title, it is not only about deadly men. A few women are list too. For example, exploits the American Revolutionary and Indian fighter Hannah Duston, and the scandalous life of 17th century swordswoman Julie La Maupin are included as well.
The full cast of characters includes Alexander the Great, Tom Allen, James Bowie, Pappy Boyington, Jelly Bryce, Lloyd Burke, Ned Christie, Winston Churchill, Ty Cobb, The Black Douglas, Hannah Duston, Nathan Bedford Forrest, Peter Francisco, Geronimo, Gurkhas (Jitbahadur Rai, Dwansing Basnet, and Lachhiman Gurung), Frank Hamer, Nancy Hart, Erich Hartmann, Wild Bill Hickok, Andrew Jackson, Jean-Louis, Turkey Creek Johnson, Commando Kelly, Pepe Llulla, Frank Luke, Donald McBane, Hans-Joachim Marseille, Bat Masterson, Julie La Maupin, Mgobozi, Audie Murphy, Usamah ibn-Munqidh, Miyamoto Musashi, Charles Nungesser, Francisco Pizarro, Robert the Bruce, Ronald Rosser, Hans Ulrich Rudel, Luke Short , Egil Skallagrimsson, Sokaku Takeda, Lance Thomas, Nancy Wake, Lewis Wetzel, Sam Whittemore, Alvin York, and Shaka Zulu. All these folks faced impossible odds, suffered grievious injuries, and persevered in the face of adversity.
This tome is packed full of interesting historical insight. Thankfully it reads much more like a work of fiction than a history book despite the fact that the tales are all true. You can read about fighter pilots who flew combat sorties days after receiving serious gunshot wounds, broken legs, or prosthetic limbs as well as soldiers, duellists, and fighters who were shot, stabbed, or mutilated and continued to battle for their lives. Some found their greatest calling in warfare or law enforcement while others were forced to fight in self-defense. Regardless of why they fought, how they fought, or what they fought with, they all did some seriously amazing things. If you want to know more about any of these fascinating characters there is a very complete bibliography to lead you to more sources too. Very well done!

a good overview.......2004-08-12
Deadliest Men is not an indepth study, nor does it claim to be. I particually enjoyed it because it is an overview that has inspired me to read more about some of the subjects. I also learned about some that I otherwise would not have chosen to investigate.
Certainly, any "list" book is going to get some complaining about who is on, or left off the list. I suggest you not worry about the picks and enjoy it for what it is. A good read of abridged profiles of some amazing warriors.

Thomas Paine is not as heralded as the rest of the Founding Fathers. This is most likely due to his not holding any political office, and largely due to his heterodox views on religion. But more about the that later.
I was quiet impressed with Paine's "Golden Voice" for the Revolution. He had a talent, and even a genius, for persuasive essaymanship. John Adams wrote, "Without the pen of Thomas Paine, the sword of Washington would have been wielded in vain."
This is a book of selections, and as C. S. Lewis observed, "The only use of selections is to deter those readers who will never appreciate the original, and thus save them from wasting their time on it, and to send all the others on the original as quickly as possible." (The Quotable Lewis, #447)
For a complete compilation, buy Thomas Paine : Collected Writings : Common Sense / The Crisis / Rights of Man / The Age of Reason / Pamphlets, Articles, and Letters (Library of America).
Here is the breakdown of this book's contents:
"Common Sense" (complete): Plain and simple, this should be required reading for every high school student--or even earlier. We cannot underestimate the connection between this pamphlet, Patrick Henry's "Liberty or Death" speech, and the decision to go ahead with the Declaration of Independence. In fact, the order, logic, and evidence that Paine used in this pamphlet was reused by Jefferson in the Declaration.
"The Crisis" (selections): These essays are a combination of motivational speeches and silver-tongued ridicule--a cross between Tokyo Rose and Rush Limbaugh.
"Rights of Man" (complete, both parts):
Coming in two part, this book could also be divided along the lines of it's contents: One half is a rambly screed against Edmund Burk's Reflections on the Revolution in France (Oxford World's Classics), the other half is rather snazzy political theory. For example, his distinction between natural and civil rights is a gem.
Age of Reason (selections of part 1): This is the book that really undid Paine and brought about the famous doggerel: "Here lies Tom Paine, who wrote in liberty's defense / And in his `Age of Reason' lost his `Common Sense.'" Like Nietzsche, Paine had a talent for sarcasm which overshadowed his evidence. Think of How to Talk to a Liberal (If You Must): The World According to Ann Coulter.
Though critical of religion, the book did leave it's mark: Joseph Smith, the founder of Mormonism (The Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ or Encyclopedia of Joseph Smith's Teachings), was well-schooled in this book. His mother recorded that Smith's paternal grandfather got into a heated discussion with his father, and threw a copy of the book and told Smith's father to read it until he believed it History of Joseph Smith by His Mother: Revised and Enhanced. BYU scholar Joseph Fielding McConkie, a great-great grandnephew of Joseph Smith, was also favorable to certain aspects of the book "Seeking the spirit."
Really, this book is nothing new, if one is familiar with Bertrand Russell's or Carl Sagan's critiques, or spend any time reading anti-Christian blogs. A Christian response would be either Mere Christianity or More Than a Carpenter.
When he presented the manuscript to Benjamin Franklin, the sage replied, "At present I shall only give you my opinion, that, though your reasonings are subtle and may prevail with some readers, you will not succeed so as to change the general sentiments of mankind on that subject, and the consequence of printing this piece will be, a great deal of odium drawn upon yourself, mischief to you, and no benefit to others. He that spits against the wind, spits in his own face."
His parting paragraph is a mixture of wit, wisdom, and prophecy:
"I would advise you, therefore, not to attempt unchaining the tiger, but to burn this piece before it is seen by any other person; whereby you will save yourself a great deal of mortification by the enemies it may raise against you, and perhaps a good deal of regret and repentance. If men are so wicked with religion, what would they be if without it."
So take it for what it is. Whatever your view of organized religion may be, this book should round out your thinking.
Agrarian Justice (selections): This is Paine's plan for redistributing income to equalize living conditions. The intent of economic equality is in accord with Paine's big heart. But for the man who said, "Government even in its best state is but a necessary evil; in its worst state an intolerable one," it is beyond strange that he would advocate such intrusiveness. Why would he want to create a nation-wide welfare system, which would of necessity, empower that "necessary evil." Maybe he did loose his common sense in his age of reason.
As I mentioned earlier, Paine is not as well known as the other founders, partly due to "Age of Reason." Additionally there is a shallowness to Paine's prose. At times he is an avid marksman for political theory, as in parts of "Common Sense" and "Rights of Man," at other times he merely strings together platitudes, invective, cracker-barrel wisdom, and off-hand sarcasm. There is no analytical depth as we get with Aristotle, Ayn Rand, C. S. Lewis, or the Thomases (Sowell and Aquinas). So I felt like I was drinking skim milk, as opposed to chocolate cream. His essays are persuasive, but not as intellectually satisfying as they could be. His talent, then, comes from an instinct for properly applying his talent for surface-level discussion. Today, he would be an NPR talking head.
Essential Reading Fo Every American.......2007-01-24
The ideas in these collections not only apply when the Founding FATHERS came together and brought together our aweseome country, but they apply to the present more than ever. The responsibilities of the people have been forgotten, it is now blasphemy to denounce or question the government. Nothing will change until the ideas in this collection are brought back into the American people's day to day life.
Must-read for anyone seriously interested in American history.......2007-01-22
This is what we're founded on, what America is supposed to be, and the way we should conduct our political affairs. Paine should probably be required reading for every citizen, every student, anyone wondering what freedom really means. Besides being informative, it is incisive, sarcastic, humorous, and passionate. The English is old and dated, but that just adds to its delight. I read this in short segments and then thought about each chapter. It made me proud to be an American and sad to realize how much freedom we've lost since Paine's day.
Enlightening, Revolutionary, and Worth a Read.......2006-11-14
In an unrelenting quest to understanding the history of the United States, one obscure name comes to mind, Thomas Paine. Paine helped establish the meaning of democracy and the "united" in United States. His two monumental works, COMMON SENSE AND RIGHTS OF MAN, provided the philosophical and rhetorical building blocks that the founding fathers, such as Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin, et al., would emulate with the writing of the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights. Many take for granted the origins of freedom and democracy in the United States, and as with many school history textbooks depict, Paine merely appears in a paragraph or two, and quickly disappears to historical oblivion.
Nevertheless, when one reads COMMON SENSE AND RIGHTS OF MAN: AND OTHER ESSENTIAL WRITINGS OF THOMAS PAINE, there will be no doubt how significant his philosophical and political writings transformed the political structure of the colonies. Although this may sound somewhat romanticized, Paine's words ignited the energy for the colonists to free themselves from the tyrannical-monarchical leadership of England's King George III. With all the talk of Paine being a founding father, he may also be considered the father of revolution, American Revolution and French Revolution, and human rights. Without the inspiration from his friend Edmund Burke, author of REFLECTIONS ON THE REVOLUTION IN FRANCE, Paine may not have been able to write the pamphlet Rights of Man. Indeed, his power of the written word translated to revolutionary action, and Jeffersonian ideology.
In clear and no nonsense language, Paine's perspective of the state of the colonies are elaborately told in COMMON SENSE. He adamantly shows his opposition toward hereditary rule and limitations imposed on individuals by George III and his vehement disdain towards aristocrats and kings. For RIGHTS OF MAN, he proposed possible solutions toward poverty, and created a blueprint towards achieving social and political institutions through his written abstracts. The other essential writings include the pamphlets, THE CRISIS, part one of THE AGE OF REASON, and selections of AGRARIAN JUSTICE. These writings gives readers an idea the political and religious atmosphere in which Paine lived, and how "breaking ties" with the so-called "motherland" was necessary towards forging a free nation.
COMMON SENSE AND RIGHTS OF MAN is indeed accessible with its pocketbook size form. After reading the book, readers may have a better understanding of what takes to build a nation. Paine's words are lessons of history and humanity, and is definitely recommendable reading.
In simplest terms and lack of a better title: Common Sense.......2006-10-25
Thomas Paine is one of those great philosophers who have a satiric spirit. Why not? He is from an age of great wits/philosophers - Voltaire, Rousseau. The most obvious reason for his greatness lies herein and it is because his reasoning and ideas are so obvious; that is his greatness. He says what is already in the minds of many and with a wit which gives the ideas strength. When I think of Thomas Paine, I think of Common Sense, the 1776 pamphlet and the spirit of reason over superstitious hypocrisy. I rank Paine with Tolstoy; I revere Thomas Paine

Book Description
(Book Jacket Status: Jacketed)
The authorities in power in England during Thomas Paine’s lifetime saw him as an agent provocateur who used his seditious eloquence to support the emancipation of slaves and women, the demands of working people, and the rebels of the French and American Revolutions. History, on the other hand, has come to regard him as the figure who gave political cogency to the liberating ideas of the Enlightenment. His great pamphlets, Rights of Man and Common Sense, are now recognized for what they are–classic arguments in defense of the individual’s right to assert his or her freedom in the face of tyranny.

Still relevant, still excellent.......2003-01-31
Let us, for a moment, forget the historical and literary importance of Right of Man and Common Sense. What if this book had just been published today? Would it still be worth reading? The answer is an unequival yes.
Althought many parts of this deal with specific issues of Paine's time (especially Rights of Man), even after two centuries, the writings of Thomas Paine are able to stoke the fires of liberty in the soul of the reader with their passion, their fierce logic and their unexpected humor.
Rights of Man comprises two long volumes written by Paine in response to English criticism of the French revolution. Although much that he says is ironic in light of events that occured after he penned these volumes, you can see the hope that the Revolution produced. He breaks government down to basic principles, pointing out the needs that government fulfills and the method by which they should be constructed. It is thought-provoking, even in the modern day and will make you look on politics of our own time with a new light. Rights of Man does drag a bit when Paine begins repeating himself, but it remains interesting and though-provoking.
But Common Sense is the real treat. The pamplet that set a continent on fire is -- this was a surprise -- a thrill to read. I found myself actually laughing at Paine's sarcasm and satire -- his way of taking monarchy and absolutism and exposing them for the ridiculuous constructions that they are.
Any student of history should read these volumes for their portrayal of late 18th century geopolitics. But you will find them to be unexpectedly entertaining.
