Art of Coppersmithing.......2007-05-14
a very informative treatise on an "Old World" art that few know how to do in todays industrialized and technological society. Remarkable, Very easy to read and follow. Will become your reference when need arises!
Art of Coppersmothing.......2007-02-01
The book is an interesting history of coppersmithing, but too much is relating to boring the apprentice. The style of the book is in the old English wording (late 1800's) which is a slow read for today. The needs of the day were well explained but don't relate well today. Most current artist keep their skills a secret, so you will be looking for more.
No other book even comes close in this topic........2004-08-23
This book shows how to make every kind of pot, pan, still, kettle, teakettle or brewry gadget that you would want to make out of copper. Big and small. Household and industrial.
Although, dealing exclusively with copper, most of the techniques shown can be applied to other common sheet metals.
This book doesn't deal with raising from the whole, as in silversmithing, but with piecing something together, and using dovetail joints along with soldering to make a whole.
Lots of woodcut illustrations and concise text. There is some obscure and obsolete terminology; such as 'spelter'. Do you know what that is?
Spinning, dies, power presses and such are not delt with in this book. Neither are the common sheet metal gadgets and tools, such as slip rolls, brakes, shears, roll crimps, and such. Hand hammering, stakes, charcoal firepots; that is what you will find in here. This is like blacksmithing for copper.
If you are interested in working with copper sheet, or brass,I have not seen another book out there as good as this one. Especially if you want to make utilitarian objects. The book is packed with information.
If you are interested in artistic copper forming you will still find the basic techniques in here as to how to work the copper. But there isn't much in the way of artistic design, like how to make a copper rooster weather vane.
Deserves much consideration.......2004-06-09
This book I believe deserves much praise. The Astragal Press have here reprinted a book written in 1893 which highlights skills that in my part of the world have essentially disappeared. With the technological progress that has sweep across the western world since this book was written you would I suspect have to travel to India, Iran or maybe Eygpt to see this sort of hand skill in use today.
In the authors day copper was the metal of choice for making the Glue Pots and Tea kettles, the Stock Pots, Frying Pans, Tallow Coppers and Brewing Coppers to name just a small aray of items listed in this book. Today the vast bulk of these would be manufactured from either Stainless Steel or may Aluminium.
So the author desribes with words and some outstanding drawings how these items could have been constructed during this period. Pattern Development of some of the items is also covered. The universal subjects of Soldering and Brazing do get good coverage as does the subject of Tinning a copper to be used for cooking purposes. He has included formula for working out some of the blanks required to start from and some good descriptions of the hand tools and stakes etc. to form the work with and on.
A previous reviewer has said that this book is mainly a historical text and of little practical worth today. This is valid only up to a point. It is my belief that this book does have a practical worth and anyone who is looking at this book will be looking precisely for what this book delivers on. That is that this book is about crafting and the art of working metal. The skill to plastically deform a metal to a desired shape is very well covered here and I think that there is a movement, even if a small one, to relearn some of the skills lost in the last few decades with the march of technology. I work in a sheetmetal fabrication shop and no one has these skills anymore and some will say "so what!". But when a job comes in with compounding curved surfaces it is to books from this generation that we must return.
The book itself has been well manufactured though I would have perferred a hard cover. Both the Table of Contents and the Index are clear and concise.
I therefore give this book 5 stars and believe that if you want to do some serious metal working in your job or at home as a hobby then this book will serve you very well.
Written by the pilgrims.......2004-05-24
This is a book which may be of historical significance but is of little practical value today. It was originally published in 1894. Do not get this as some kind of how-to guide or you will be disappointed.

A male magical girl?.......2007-08-12
Philar is an average high school student. He has no virtually athletic ability and his grades are just so-so. He escapes from his average, ordinary life by playing video games after school. One day, Philar manages to tick off some boys from the Fong Don gang at the video arcade, who proceed to try to beat him into a pulp. Instead of being sensible and running away, Philar decides to fight back. He finds a power deep within him (which, of course, he was not aware of previously), and he manages to bash a couple of the gang members' faces in.
Thus begins an epic manwha as Philar realizes that he is really Philaro, the "Sun," or ruler, from another world whose throne has been stolen by his brother. His brother (as all crazy, power-hungry brothers will do) has sworn to destroy the rightful heir to the throne, and hires none other than Philaro's ex-fiancé to assassinate Philar.
What could have been an exceedingly mediocre first volume is saved by one little quirk: the plotline is your average "magical girl from another world" story (check out From Far Away and InuYasha for examples of this phenomenon), only all the roles are reversed. Philar is the "magical girl from another world" (the equivalent of Kagome in InuYasha) and his ex-fiance, Lunarena, is the "hero-who-first-wanted-to-kill-the-magical-girl-but-then-falls-in-love-with-her" (the equivalent of Izark in From Far Away). There's even a rival for the magical girl's love, who is introduced later in the series.
Other than that reversal of roles, the volume is mediocre at best. The translation by Comics One is poor. The translators seemed to think that commas, semi-colons, exclamation points, and even question marks were optional. Also, Philar is a Korean name? I can turn a blind eye to that oddity, but when someone says that Philaro sounds like "a Western name", the story becomes absurd. So, when you add an "O" to the end, the name suddenly becomes weird and foriegn? I must honestly wonder if Comics One changed all the names to sound "fantasy-ish", since I'm not sure that you can spell most of them in Korean; since I do not speak Korean, I am not 100% certain, though.
The art is passable. Although it's certainly not the greatest art I've ever seen, it's pleasant enough. The author seems to have a fascination with drawing characters half-naked for no reason, though. They'll be fully clothed and in the next panel, most of their clothing will have mysteriously disappeared. I'm not sure whether it's supposed to be symbolic or whether the characters simply feel restricted by their clothing, but it's a bit odd.
Redmoon isn't a bad series. It's worth reading just to see a male magical girl. If you're looking for something a bit unusual and don't mind missing punctuation, you might want to check it out.
Don't . . . just don't........2007-04-07
*Spoiler Warning*
I got this series about six years ago read it through once. I had to ask a good friend to remove it from my sight. She obligingly took it home and has never burdened me with it's presence since.
The plot starts with classic fantasy elements and progress to a very pedestrian end. I'm really trying to be kind. The art was nothing spectacular, and as stated above, it started with some interesting fantasy ideals and crumbles to a plane crash ending that has nothing to do with any of the previous plot.
Seriously. Spend your money on something else.
Not a bad read.......2003-12-19
Became interested in the comic via the video game.
Refers to digital version: The artwork is good, rather average black and white anime style. The story is not terribly gripping, as we follow Philar on his quest to find out why all these strange alien figures have appeared in his life and who he really is. The highlight is the characters. They each have distinct personalities and interact very well, as well as develop during the course of the series.
Recommended to manga readers who enjoy sci-fi/fantasy with splatters of tragic romance.

Most people in modern Western society are obsessed with hair: hair they have, hair they don't, hair they don't want (there), the latest to-do about the do of the latest star or starlet--and yet there have been virtually no in-depth studies of hair in this culture. McCracken, a curator of ethnology, has written an insightful study of how Westerners redefine themselves by defining and redefining their 'dos, dont's, and dyes, and the fetishistic fascination with hair styles of the rich and famous.
Although written primarily about women's hair, and in particular, blond hair, my entire household--men and women alike--learned a great deal from the in-depth analyses of these dead strands of protein extruding from tiny pores on our heads which nonetheless have extraordinary power in determining status and even wealth. Recommended.

Hair as a window to the emerging self--the transformation.......1999-11-09
I read this book in a single day. It deals with the way we (mostly women) use hair as a first step towards identifying ourselves and even identifying (or trying on) the self we are becomming. It was straightforward but lighthearted and kind. You could tell the author enjoyed the research. Hair as a window to the soul.

My dad was an "Iron Man of Metz".......2006-07-07
After having listened to my fathers many retellings of the war, I stumbled upon this book. I never expected the book to sound exactly like my dad's version of what he had done and seen, but it was. It was as though my father's retelling was told in this book. Thank you, Tobias, for putting my fathers and his fellow soldiers' story down in print. I will be attending the 95th Division Army Reunion with my dad this coming August in Chicago. It will be my first reunion and am looking forward to meeting those other brave men who truly were THE IRON MEN OF METZ.
The Iron Men of Metz.......2005-08-02
A gripping account of the lives of 22 members of the 95th Infantry Division from induction into the armed forces through their discharge, including an epilogue for each, bringing the reader up to date on their present lives. Descriptions of basic training and combat are accurate and exciting eye-witness accounts of the trials and tribulations of members of the "greatest generation". A well written book that is very hard to put down. Accounts are divided into the sequences in which they occurred. Historical perspectives inserted in appropriate places help the reader to understand the progress of World War II and its relationship to previous conflicts. Highly recommended to any student of military history and even to those who heretofore have had little interest in war stories.
Iron Man Book.......2005-07-09
I thought the Iron Men of Metz was great! I knew nothing about World War II and normally don't read books from this genre, but this book was very interesting. I enjoyed the introduction to the stories. By the time I made it to the first story I understood what had happened around the world after World War I and how the 95th Division prepared for war. The majority of the stories were wonderful and you really get to know each of the guys. I liked how the book was divided in to sections with an overview of what was going on elsewhere and what the units were scheduled to do. That really helped me understand what was going on since most of the stories were different. The pictures helped me visualize the period and see who I was reading about. In all, I really enjoyed the book and look forward to reading more like it.
The Iron Men of Metz.......2005-07-08
The Iron Men of Metz is a colorful collection of oral histories offered in their entirety. The book begins with the circumstances leading up to World War II and an overview of the African, European and Pacific Theaters of Operation. An outline of the division's actions carries the reader along the blazing trail of the 95th Infantry Division and facilitates a better understanding of the exciting stories as they unfold en route to Victory-Europe and Victory-Japan Days. Come join the actual Iron Men as they share their tales of sacrifice, valor and victory in the Second World War.
Book Description
Everyone in the world knows what Bill Clinton did with Monica Lewinsky, or what happened to Brad and Jennifer, Katie and Tom. These factoids mysteriously capture the world's attention. But there's a flip side to this: fog facts.
Fog facts are known but not known, the sort of things that journalists and political junkies know, but somehow the world does not. The "Downing Street Memo" is a fine example. This document revealed that the head of British intelligence had been informed by his Washington counterparts that the White House was cooking the books on the information it was using to justify a war in Iraq. Yet this was not big news in America. Why? In Fog Facts, Larry Beinhart tackles this question and shows how soft-core, public relations-style political lying has been raised to an art form.
Customer Reviews:
Packs a wallop.......2007-01-28
Novelist and very sharp social commentator Larry Beinhart's main premise in this somewhat breezy but always incisive book is that the truth is right in front of our eyes but we are unable to see it because it is obscured by a prevailing fog of lies and misinformation.
He notes, for example, that the truth about Saddam Hussein's alleged ties to Al Qaeda and the weapons of mass destruction that weren't there, and especially the disaster that was likely to follow if we invaded Iraq, was known, available and understood, but unfortunately buried on page three or four of the New York Times or in an academic tome or on some obscure Website or beneath the radar of the six o'clock news so that your average person (especially your average congressperson) didn't know about it. Besides they (and we) were watching Fox News, which was putting "the news in context," was giving "it a perspective," was telling us "how to think about the stories" it reported. In fact, as Beinhart so incisively notes, Fox News was and is doing us "a service" because even if Fox News has it wrong, "for many of their viewers it is still more satisfying than the conventional, non-judgmental approach that leaves the audience with work to do." (p. 182)
This sort of incisive understanding of what is really going on is part of what makes this little book such a fantastic read. Beinhart sees things in a way that others do not. He sees past the spin and the hype and the conventional wisdom to what is really going on--or has gone on. He sees that what has propelled the right to power in this country and has persuaded its leaders to embrace hypocrisy and authoritarianism is a belief by many that "the source of order is authority" and that hypocritical lies are often necessary to maintain that order. He recalls that George W. Bush "mocked Vice President Al Gore for acknowledging marijuana use, saying, "Baby boomers have got to grow up and say, yeah, I may have done drugs, but instead of admitting it, say to kids, don't do them." (p. 96)
This "Bush logic" in part explains why he and his administration spew out so many lies and so much misinformation. Quite simply, Bush believes lies and secrecy are good policy. The general public are like children. They should not be told the truth lest it misguide them or confuse them. Beinhart asserts that hypocrisy and mendacity are in fact part of the Republican Party's program and have "a great deal [to] do with its appeal." (p. 96) The idea is we like being lied to, or at least we believe that other people--the unwashed masses probably--need to be lied to, and this can only be done effectively if the lies come from authority figures. Order is made by authority. "A choice, a statement, or a rule is not made valid by logic or proof or evidence. It comes from the authority of the source." (p. 96)
Of course the real authority in the world is empirical fact as understood by rationality and by the sciences, not just the hard sciences, but the social, political and economic sciences as well, and by technology. Beinhart notes that the split between those who follow "the constellation of Republicanism, conservatism, and Christianity" (p. 96) and the rest of us is "not between right and left but between the faith-based and reality-based communities." (p. 181)
I think Beinhart has got it right. The Bush administration and its supporters, in following a faith-based way of dealing with the world and its problems, are in reality applying an ignorance-based approach that will inevitably lead to the end of America as the world's leading economic, technological and scientific power. Unless we find a way to navigate through the lies and misinformation spun out by the right wing "noise machine" we are headed for not only a further loss in power and prestige, but a lowered standard of living that will inevitably result from that loss.
The question might be, why has the culture of mendacity and faith-based authority taken over so much of America? In Europe and elsewhere people are amazed at our growing stupidity. Beinhart blames the media in part. He writes that "since 9/11...there no longer seem to be any consequences for political lying." This is because the media fails to report the lies as lies. "The failure of the media to take responsibility is the reason that political lying--especially in the soft-core, public relations style that misleads--has no penalties anymore." (p. 185)
Part of this book is devoted to exposing George W. Bush for what he is, a mediocre opportunist who is clever at manipulating people and spinning events in a way that benefits him. He avoided service in Vietnam, but nobody seemed to notice as he now struts around like a war hero. His various business enterprises were failures. They lost money. But Bush himself did not lose money, mainly because he was the son of prominent political family that included his father who was the President of the United States. He got cheapie loans and bailouts and favorable insider trading decisions from the SEC so that when he ran for governor of Texas he was already a rich man. Beinhart also looks into the past of Vice President Dick Cheney and his association with Halliburton. It is in part a picture of a scheming politician corrupt to the core.
But mainly Beinhart looks into the fog. It's dense and thick and, for now, it prevails.
Great book!!.......2006-07-11
Easy reading, short but informative. I highly recommend this book and believe it should be necessary reading for every american.
Lousy book.......2006-02-21
The only piece of info I trust in this book was actually on the book jacket: Beinhart is a novelist. Listen, the WMD "case" was trumped up...we all know that now. But this book is no more than a thinly disguised rant about Bush and Cheney, how Bush stole the election, blah blah blah. Of course it's "balanced" with helpful facts about how Clinton personally ushered the economy into its white hot expansion in the late 1990's. What a load of hogwash. This book is itself one garguantuan Fog Fact.
Important addition to our language.......2005-12-27
Beinhart has done us a remarkable service by giving language to a new and critically important concept, that of the fact that is neither secret nor known. By "fog facts," Beinhart means to indicate pieces of information that have been published on back pages of business sections of newspapers or picked up by a columnist or two, information that has perhaps been circulated on the internet by those with a passionate interest in the issue and enough free time, information that is accepted as known and established by reporters, editors, producers, and pundits, but which the vast majority of the public has never heard about and would find incredibly important and shocking.
The subtitle that Beinhart gives his website is "Known Facts That Have Been Lost in the Fog," and by the fog he means to indicate, as described in his book, the onslaught of abundant facts and information about unimportant stories: Monica Lewinski and O.J. Simpson are two examples Beinhart gives. But Beinhart suggests at least one other force that helps keep some fog facts in the fog: people's reluctance to believe a really big lie. This, Beinhart writes, is "why it was easy to believe that Bill Clinton lied about having sex with that woman and hard to believe that Bush and his entire cabinet were telling bald faced lies about Saddam's connection to Al Qaeda and his weapons of mass destruction."
In fact, one of the fog facts Beinhart discusses is the Downing Street Minutes.
The Big Lie: Alive and Well.......2005-11-10
Who needs sleep, anyway: as with Beinhart's last book, The Librarian, this one kept me glued to the page througout half the night with it's sarcastic humor and disturbing observations: The Big Lie, a propaganda technique cherished by Hitler, is alive and well and has come to new heights of perfection with the Bush administration. Beinhart makes no empty claims when he shows that clear, unequivocal and published documentation for the government's policies (and failures) exist - court rulings, official investigations, confirmed media reports, economic statistics, frank testimony from the power players about their intentions and motives - and yet, the obvious conclusions are lost in the fog, turned upside down, or remain unknow to the general population.
"Fog Facts" stands in the tradition of Noam Chomsky's poignant analyses "Necessary Illusions" and "Manufacturing Consent" as it shows by example how large scale indoctrination and the selling of obviously wrong, irrational and detrimental policies can succeed in a democratic society with a nominally free media system.
As a slow reader I appreciate how Beinhart focusses on a well selected sample of cases without getting lost in minutiae, how he keeps the writing crisp and entertaining, and the book short (187p). An index and footnotes throughout make it a valuable reference tool, and the associated website offers further material and invites readers to share their own fog facts.
So what's a citizen to do against the evils described? The book itself is an analysis, not a manual. As such it provides case studies of the major issues of recent years and provides excellent ammunition to bring reason into the discussion. But while not given explicitely, answers to the "what to do?" questions are easy to infer: Start with skepticism towards power, read watchdog sites that monitor the players and the political PR industry, and make your voice heard when politicians and the media start obscuring the issues.

bring nature into your yard.......2003-12-01
This lovely DK (Dorling Kindersley) has the trademark vivid photographs on every page. Detailed information on discouraging squirrels, plans for making your own feeders of different types and lists of various birds you can attract using various methods.
Each bird page has a detailed photo of the bird, a map of the United States showing where and when you can see the bird, behavior and description of sounds and songs, nesting habits, and the best kind of food to attract and benefit the birds you want.
Information on bird baths and nesting boxes is also provided.
A great resource for those who love to have God's creatures in their yard, but don't know the best way to attract them.
Made Me Coo With Joy..........2002-06-08
...to receive this fine book! Trying to identify the birds visiting my backyard feeder with old field guide books was not working. They simply had too much information geared for experts. This book is nicely laid out and clear, offering tips for attracting, feeding, watering and identifying the birds visiting your backyard, as well as instructions for building bird houses, feeders, and so on. I put several of the ideas to use immediately! If you are an amateur backyard birder, this is the book for you!!
Beautiful Photos, Great Info.......2001-11-26
I am a beginner backyard bird watcher and I really enjoyed this book. It has some great pictures to help you identify birds, or even just to look at. The book doesn't stop there, however, it gives you nice detailed information of bird behavior, sounds, nests and habitat. I recommend this book to beginner or intermediate bird watchers.
Well Worth Having.......1999-11-27
This book is a really nice reference book for the backyard birdfeeder. It's not just a bird identifier book, it has chapters on bird survival and behavior. I'm glad to have it my small bird library and refer to it often.
a good supplement to any backyard birder's library.......1997-09-08
This revised edtion will make an excellent gift for the beginning or intermediate backyard birder.
Photographic plates thoughout serve as good visual aids. Photos are exquisite in detail despite the size of some color plates. This book also contains plans for feeders of various types.
Overall, a good addition for any birding enthusiast.
