Customer Reviews:
Out of the box art.......2007-07-03
Read this book for a non-traditional studio class and it was a great introduction to many contemporary artists I did not know.
Terrible writing and terrible art........2007-05-08
I can't believe that there are so many positive reviews for this book. Aside from any personal preferences, did anyone else notice that the text is FULL of grammatical mistakes? Even the artists' names are not spelled consistently the same way throughout an article. If you don't believe me, count the number of times she uses Mesa-Bains and then the number of times she uses Mesa-Baines.
Aside from that, the writing style is simply awful, although I guess with this kind of subject matter, it's hard to do much better. This book, along with my Studio Art class, has helped me to develop a strong disliking for most of the contemporary art that is gaining attention. It is thoroughly disturbing and pointless. None of the artists manage to successfully convey their messages. I am very glad to never have to see this book again.
A little of this and a little of that.......2001-02-03
as a MFA student thats currently being educated by "the institution" i find myself flip flopping between wanting to drop out or drop in...this book didn't save me but it sure put things in perspective, never before in a book have I seen cover such topics where you can find Barbara Kruger and James Luna and Joseph Beuys and Tomie Arai between the same cover's in a book. This book also addresses an important issue for me. race. The art world is racist and if you don't know that just look around, art is life and a reflection of society and if you dont know that its because your a white (sorry but its true). This book may not address it but it surely helps to have some artists of color represented (although they aren't near the best art makers).
An OK overview, but superficial.......1999-09-27
I guess this book is meant as a real "intro" text, but if you do know something about this art, it seems pretty lite. Clearly, lots of people like it, but Weintraub seems to bend so far over to make complex work accessible that she really over-simplifines. And the "art" in the book is so scattered and uneven, you don't get any deeper sense of what is going on, what the historical context of any of this might be.
Granted, there aren't many intro texts on recent art. So if this is one of the "better" ones, it's mostly for lack of competition. I wish there was some accessible middle ground between pop/gossip texts and academic tomes. This feels like it's written from someone really distant to the work, who's not always that well-informed.
Almost a bull's-eye.......1998-11-30
Anyone who wants to become familiar with intricacies of what can be the confusing world of post-modern art should read this book. The author does an excellent job of presenting an interesting cross-section of significant and fascinating collection of atypical artists. Pretty much every artist who is included has done their share of expanding the contemporary definition of Art in the Western and Non-western tradition. Over all, this compendium of essays does much to open the door to widen the reader's perspective on what art can do. The one aspect of this book that is troublesome is that the author often seems to focus on only one or two aspects of an artist's works, a habit that is frustrating at best and misleading at worst. While doing outside research on one of the artists included, Mel Chin, I was convinced there were two artists with the same name, as the perspective provided in the book did not prepare me for the artist's full range of activities. Still, this complaint should not stop an interested party from purchasing the book. I for one did not feel my money ill-spent.

Interesting spin on the Hawaiian version of astrology........2002-05-09
This book teaches Hawaiian astrology in the framework of Hoku-Heleli a kahuna that is teaching his son Hoku-iki astrology.
In this teaching; Hoku-iki is taught the constelations, which Akua (god of goddess) rules the constelation, then Hoku-Helelie expounds on the teaching by telling an appropriate Hawaiian legend as in "Kane and the creation myth", "The righteous warrior", "Papa and Wakea", "Hina and the moon", and others to illustrate the meaning of the signs. I am surprised that Pele is not mentioned in the book.
The book also teaches the importance of living in harmony with the rest of Creation.
I only have one tiny nitpick with the book. Ms. Claig refers to Io as the supreme or ultimate God (There are many names for the Creator that I need not go into). The nitpick is that Hawaiians were aware of the Creator; but did not pray to the supreme God because they felt that the supreme being was beyond human comprension, so they use their Aumakua, the Po'e Aumakua, and the assorted Akua to act as intercessors.

It is a well-known fact (wink, wink) that no woman can survive the pregnancy experience without her own copy of What to Expect When You're Expecting. Truth is, most first-time mommies-to-be end up with two or three copies of this highly regarded guide to pregnancy, labor, and newborn care. Yet despite all of its helpful information about nutrition, bodily changes, and fetal development, it glosses over vital questions that enter every pregnant woman's mind: "How should I tell my husband, my family, my boss that I'm expecting?" and "Can I park in the handicapped spot?" or even "Can I cut in line at the public restroom?" Author Paula Spencer expertly faces the challenge of answering these and many other serious and comical questions that pop up during pregnancy in this equally smart and entertaining look at etiquette for the new mom--and does so with plenty of sense and sensibility.
Spencer focuses on a great variety of touchy situations in chapters that include "Spreading the News," "Busybodies," "At Work, Birth Ceremonies," and "Life with Baby." What can be done about a doctor who constantly keeps the pregnant mom waiting? Spencer offers four different suggestions, starting with "Ask why this is the case." How can a pregnant mom voice a complaint without being rude (to smokers, for instance)? While Spencer does furnish a nicely worded request, she also suggests the mom simply find "a more hospitable place to eat with a pleasanter air." Along with providing hundreds of thoughtful, reasonable answers to many such questions, she also includes wonderful lists covering do's and don'ts for grandparents, naming traditions from a wide variety of cultures, contemporary baby shower themes, and a thorough chapter of smart gift suggestions. --Liane Thomas
Customer Reviews:
Interesting information inside.......2001-11-08
I liked this book, although it didn't delve as deeply into these issues as I had hoped. It was still a good read, with interesting info and lots of great advice for expectant moms and those women who are hoping to become pregnant soon. I love Mrs. Spencer's personable, easy-to-read writing style!
Fun reading any mom-to-be would eat up!.......2001-02-22
This book lives up to its title and covers a lot of topics not usually discussed like birth traditions and people who make weird comments to you and telling your boss you're pregnant. I liked the stuff about baby showers too.
I found this book useful as an expectant and new Mom.......2001-01-10
Being pregnant at the time this book was published, it was very useful. I found this book a great guide to actions I could use daily. The book also gave me confirmation for many things I had already "gotten away with" while being pregnant. Humerous and Helpful. I highly recommend for every expecting Mother!
not what i expected.......2000-11-01
This book was not helpful. I was expecting insightful information, and was disappointed. I would not recommend this book for a first time mother.
Everything Else You Need to Know When You're Expecting.......2000-02-28
Has all the answers to all of my pregnancy questions -- I'm going to recommend it to all of my friends. A perfect gift for expectant moms!

Ideas For Development
ASIN: 1853394211 |
Book Description
This book aims to provoke discussion about current participatory approaches and to improve the understanding and practice of these approaches.
The widespread take-up of participatory approaches among governments, NGOs and other organizations across the development sector has created a need for quality assurance and evaluation into the methods used. "The Myth of Community" addresses this need by critically assessing how women can be involved more appropriately and equally in participatory approaches and how gender issues can be tackled more meaningfully.
Containing a rich array on contributions from Asia, Africa, Latin America and Europe, The Myth of Community provides a variety of viewpoints and perspectives from those most closely involved in participatory approaches to development.
The contributors discuss the importance of conceptual clarity, appropriate methods and methodologies, and supportive organizations and institutional structures.

Book Description
"No army in the Middle East has been as written about in English as has Israel's, yet this book actually says something new. Reuven Gal, former chief psychologist of the IDF, looks at the influences on the Israeli soldier and their impact on the IDF's performance. He is able to deal with issues such as motivation and camaraderie, leadership and heroism from a human viewpoint. . . . a detailed assembly of data such as this one is welcome, and the sociological-psychological jargon is kept at a minimum. This is neither hagiography nor psychobabble, and it contains a great deal of detail." Middle East Journal
Customer Reviews:
Old but excellent!.......2007-02-08
Although many would consider this book dated because it was published 21 years ago, it is surprisingly fresh in its analysis, depth and scholar research. In 1986 the IDF was trying to heal its wounds caused by the 1982 Lebanon War and the occupation that followed and this is a main theme of the book but not the only one. Mr Gal leaves no stone unturned in this work, presenting every single aspect of Israeli military life from recruitment, selection, service, training, command, leadership and ethos, using a mass of statistical data. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to get an in depth look at the powerful IDF and understanf its real sources of strength.

Some have said that the events of September 11 took every American by surprise. That's not true. There were Cassandras among us warning about the dangers of Islamic terrorism--and one of their leaders was Steven Emerson, who must be ranked among the most fearless reporters in the world. As a self-made expert on Islamic terrorism, he has invited the hatred of violent murderers. (At least one group has marked him for assassination; he was offered enrollment in the federal witness protection program, but refused). For more than 10 years, Emerson has soldiered on, studying groups that operate in the United States for the express purpose of funding and managing deadly organizations. American Jihad summarizes what he has learned, and it isn't comforting. Emerson shows how the Palestinian terrorist group Hamas has grown an extensive network in the United States, how the group Islamic Jihad set up shop at the University of South Florida, and how an Islamic center in Tucson helped recruit two of Osama bin Laden's top deputies. He also provides circumstantial evidence that bin Laden himself once applied for an American visa--"even the possibility is tantalizing, and chilling," he concludes. He urges Americans to fight back, but worries that time is short: "We are still vulnerable." This is an important book, and a sobering one. --John Miller
Book Description
AFTER SEPTEMBER 11, 2001...
...the federal government detained several hundred people suspected of terrorist involvement, and continued to search for hundreds more. Some were overseas, some were on the run, but most were already at home -- in America.
Who are these people? Where did they come from? And how could there be so many terrorists or suspected terrorists living among us without action being taken? In American Jihad, Steven Emerson, the world's leading authority on domestic Islamic terrorist networks, tells the full story of the rise of those who wish to destroy the United States from within.
From the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center, to foiled attacks on the New York City subway system, to a stunning range of murders across the country, there were numerous warning signs that the "American Jihad" had been gaining momentum. With an up-to-the-minute afterword that explains the stops and starts of the post-9/11 investigation, American Jihad reveals the full story that only Emerson knows -- and the reasons America failed to stop the most devastating attack in history on our own soil. This is a frightening and crucial book for anyone who needs to understand the threat within our borders.

American Jihad.......2007-09-25
Scary ... a must read. Wake up Americans!!! these guys want to KILL us!!!
One of the key books of knowledge.......2007-09-03
This book is a must. It will wake you up, scare you, inform you, and cause you to buy a gun, get a years food supply, and change your mind of who to vote for as well as see that the main political parties are morally bankrupt on this issue nationally and locally. This is the book we will look back on and say, "if we had only listened, we had the evidence, and ignored it."
The Much Needed Warning.......2007-04-07
Steven Emerson is a well known journalist, who has spent over a decade in research of Islamic extremist organizations operating in the U.S. Rising in popularity through his expertise, Emerson was unfairly dismissed by the media immediately after Oklahoma City bombing, in which first suspects were Islamic extremist organizations. Fearing backlash and being labeled as politically incorrect, media organizations dismissed Emerson.
Regardless of the fickle media in our country, Emerson continued collecting the data that he dedicated his career to. The facts he uncovered are shocking and truly frightening. Islamic terrorist cells have been using U.S.'s freedom of speech, freedom to assemble and so many other freedoms in order to eventually undermine and destroy those same freedoms. Throughout the book, Emerson is exceptionally knowledgable and to the point, supporting his claims with hard evidence.
Exposing the inner workings of many seemingly benign, charitable organizations for what they really are, Emerson put his own life in danger. There is nothing benign about Islamic fundamentalism, as shown by many assassinations of its opponents, even if those opponents are moderate Muslims. Emerson expertly describes the inability of our federal agencies to deal with the situation at hand in an expeditious manner, due to so many freedoms guaranteed to the fundamentalists in this country.
Read this book and then pass it on, talk about it with friends, relatives and coworkers. People need to know. Emerson makes it easy to understand, especially in his appendices (don't skip those), especially Appendix D, in which he presents the short history of Islamic fundamentalism. Excellent writing, excellent detail. I highly recommend this book.
American Jihad.......2007-03-09
A must read for anyone (including our lawmakers) who cares about Homeland Security. Terrorist organizations exposed on American soil. Discover how the "radical" Islamist operate to destroy the "infidels" of America. Eye opening accounts of how the Islamic terrorists succeeded in pulling off the most devastating attack on American soil. Will definately change your attitude toward Islam being a "peaceful religion." Most Americans believe the war on terror is being waged on foreign soil today but the shocker is the Islamic terrorist are here...now....right under our noses! Will it take another "9-11" to convince America?
let's be clear.......2007-03-08
Let's be clear, there is conceptual Islam and Islam as it is actually thought about, taught, and practiced by Muslims. There are, indeed, verses in the Qur'an about peace and tolerance. There is also, however, the Islamic doctrine of "naskh," or abrogation. Contemporary Imams can simply nullify the verses of the Qur'an that they don't like. Most of those came from the Meccan period in Muhammad's life -- later in his Medinan period the verses became far more violent. Remember too that there is an Islamic doctrine of "kitman," or partial truth. Under this doctrine a Muslim may lie or deceive in order to propagate the faith. The author is doing us an enormous favor by showing us how those who would kill us and destroy our way of life are, like termites, burrowing into the walls of our society and chewing away.

Silent Wings.......2004-05-11
For birders, lovers of art, or those interested in producing paintings or carvings of owls, this is an excellent reference. It's not a long book - only about 150 pages - but it contains an interesting collection of visual and verbal information. The first 59 pages are a full color gallery of owls in paintings and sculpture by assorted artists. The remainder of the book contains text and art on 19 North American species of owls, such as the barn owl, saw whet owl, and great horned owl. Each section consists of four pages: First there is a one-page description of the owl, its range, habitat, breeding habits, etc. The second page shows the author's b&w pen and ink sketches of a perching owl from front, back, and side, then a two-page layout depicts the owl in flight (in full color) from the front, side, top and bottom with emphasis on plummage pattern and colors. These layouts are very nicely rendered and large enough to showcase the author's attention to detail. All illustrations were painted full-size and reconstructed from the "bones up" to represent an average individual of the species. Coloration was determined under natural lighting to ensure that the illustrations may be used as accurate color references. A book that's lovely to look at and useful, too.
