Invaluable Resource to Artists in All Media.......2003-10-08

I, too, just got back from a two-week residency at Norcroft Women Writers Retreat in Minnesota. We passed this book around as well, scribbling addresses in our notebooks. The experience at Norcroft was so special, we wanted more opportunities. This book opened the door for us. Browsing other residencies was a joy. I am planning on buying my own copy.

Useful resource for creating an artist's community.......2001-02-06

I bought this book as a resource for ideas on what we might need to do in Waukegan, Illinois to create an artists community here. It seems clear that building around the arts is the most organic way to rebuild our downtown and lakefront area. As such, we are looking for ways to create new gallery and studio space, foster live/work space creation and even establish the City as a destination for artist colonies and retreats. Obviously, we don't need to reinvent the wheel. The best way to learn some of the things we could do is to study what other communities have done. This book has served that end very well. I plan to visit some of the communities and residences outlined in this book to learn even more of what could be duplicated here in Waukegan. Make no mistake, the book is not intended to be a "how to" book for creating an artists community, but by describing what various communities offer it serves that purpose aptly.

Important reference for considering art community residency........2000-05-09

This edition has been revised and updated to include nearly eighty residences in the U.S., including complete descriptions on each community from residency lengths and admission deadlines and fees to programs offered. Histories of the programs complete the overviews which will prove important for any considering an art community residency.

A Resident Responds.......2000-05-05

I'm just back from Johnson VT, The Vermont Studio Center, where artist residents were eagerly passing this book from table to table at meals. It appears to be a great time-saving source as applying for grants and residencies can be a full time job. VSC was accurately described so I'm hopeful that the other listings prove to be well researched. I'm listing 4 stars as I've just added this book to my shopping list, it may very well be a 5 star reference guide for artists.

A traveler along the banks of the Connecticut River will be struck by the number of long low sheds rising from the fields as if they are an extension of the landscape. A building type shaped by necessity that grows more beautiful with use and age, these are tobacco curing sheds, mute witnesses to a slowly vanishing agricultural tradition and a thriving economic boom of the last hundred and fifty years.

Surprisingly, the Connecticut River valley was once a major producer of cigar leaf tobacco. One of the plants whose cultivation was learned from the native Americans, tobacco was the main crop of many old Yankee farmers and, after them, the Slavic newcomers. The need to season the "Indian weede" gave rise to the structure of the drying barns, a vernacular style unique to its time and place. Just as a picture can throw light on an entire world, so can these drying sheds open a window on a way of life that is fast receding.

James F. O'Gorman reads through oral histories, newspaper reports, and the terse factual writing of agricultural diaries to bring to life the risks and rewards of living close to the seasons, at the mercy of rainfall and sunshine. He has collected an array of vintage and newly commissioned photos of the work of growing tobacco, from de facto portraits of anonymous laborers to images of the sheds themselves, with all their ventilating doors open, welcoming the air. While the text is pretty good and the historic pictures are fine, there should have been more contemporary photos to show the Connecticut River Valley Today and how people are using the barns today.

Great Book.......2005-02-25

This book is very good for a player who has played for a year or 2. The music is quite easy but sounds so good you will be whistlin' the tunes to yourself after playing them.. Lots of great ideas to use over blues changes etc. Highly recommended. Perhaps the person who gave this 1 star shoul;d take some lessons...

Ain't easy, ain't funky ..........2002-11-22

When you are a player of Mintzer's ability, you can play tunes with chords with flat nines, sharp thirteens, and everything in between. It is apparently impossible for Mintzer to conceive of a tune that doesn't have a chord chart that looks like a sequence of random symbols. So, the chart for the first tune, a 12-bar blues, contains thirteen different chords in the first 12 bars! It get's worse from there. If you want to play funk, you have to be able to jam on one chord, that's what funk is all about, but, even in Mintzer's funk tunes, the chords change every two beats, thus it is not applicable to what I think of as funk playing. The book consists of transcribed solos, there is no explanation or comment at all. I bought the "Etudes" book, and now the "Easy Etudes" book. I didn't learn one thing from "Etudes" and I don't expect to learn anything from "Easy Etudes".

Despite this half century stand-off, along the world's most militarized stretch of land known as the demilitarized zone, much remains unknown about this ruthless foe. James M. Minnich masterfully blends academic knowledge with nearly twenty-five years of military experience to explain the NKPA's origins, military ideology, strategy, combat formations, and tactics to ensure that no coalition combatant has to fight the NKPA without a full understanding of this ruthless, reclusive belligerent.

At the outset, Minnich examines the initial, crucial years of the formation of the North Korean state and its army. Inaugurated in February 1948, the NKPA burgeoned from the experiences of its partisan roots, from direct Soviet tutelage, and from Chinese Communist influences. Solidly grounded in primary sources and buttressed by the judicial use of secondary sources, Minnich traces the forging elements of these three groups--Korean partisans, Soviet Army, and Chinese Communists upon the NKPA. Each group uniquely contributed to the cauldron that forged the leadership, combat formations, combat equipment, and training that prepared an army to mount a surprise attack that triggered the first shooting conflict of the Cold War; the Forgotten War that nearly ignited World War III.

Later, Minnich draws the parallel between the original three influences on the NKPA and its current military ideology, strategy, combat formations, and tactics. For over fifty years the NKPA has dramatically increased in size and capability, yet remains true to its initial precepts. Drawing heavily upon military education at the Republic of Korea Army College, Minnich conducts a detailed examination of the NKPA's current military tactics,! including its seven forms of offensive maneuver, two forms of defense, and tactical artillery groupings tactics. This book is a must read for students of Korean history and those seeking a deeper understanding of the NKPA, but unequivocally it is required reading for every one of the 600,000 United States Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, and military planners who must remain prepared to rapidly deploy to Korea then close with and destroy this most dangerous of enemies.

This book does not provide the reader with much in the way of current information about the NKPA or about it's history. I have found much better information on the web - use the global security web page. If you want to learn more than basic, basic facts this is not the book for you.

A Must Read for ALL Business People.......2006-07-05

When I went to law school in the early 80's, 47% of my class was women; however, at that juncture, most women were modeling men. What I noticed was they really didn't own their own power as women. They were more like a female version of men. And, in the 80's, that was true in corporate offices as well. Today, that is all changing. Women are finding their own version of Power.

The majority of my market is women - I built my own companies and today I work with small business entrepreneurs who want to create millionaire success while being true to their core values and doing something that brings them a sense of passion and purpose. That fits the woman profile.

This book is filled with fascinating survey data about what women have DONE, especially in just the last decade, but not much about women WANT.
And fascinating facts there are. Two of my favorites are that:

60% of all women aged 40 to 69 are single (!), and

65% of all car purchases are made "directly by women."

As a professional political analyst myself, I read absolutely everything I can find by Celinda Lake and Kellyanne Conway, whether written separately or together. It takes two top data mavens of opposite political persuasions to sift through hundreds of actual interviews to tell us what the numbers say, today. The two points I found most interesting were the tremendous growth of women-owned businesses (and women business owners) plus the phenomen of the "sandwich generation"--baby boom women dealing with children and their own retirement plans on the one hand but also with the healthcare and financial affairs of aging parents. Today's women face huge family, financial, and career pressures in a way I, as a man, thought I understood but clearly didn't appreciate properly before reading this book. If you are selling a product, planning a political campaign, or worrried aobut how this nation deals with social security and medicare, I think it is well worth your time.

Sounds promising...but ultimately disappoints.......2006-06-28

I picked this one up from the library the other day (original hardback) because waders are my favorite birds. Upon getting it home and reading it I see that it attempts to cover all "wading" birds from herons and storks to sandpipers and plovers.

This wouldn't be so bad, but in many places it's little more than a list of these birds. A majority of accounts have no pictures, many only have line drawings. The accounts are all pretty basic field-guide level stuff.

If you're looking for somehting to really be useful in regards to these birds, there are other books that are much better.
