Book Description
Chris Marker is one of the most extraordinary and influential filmmakers of our time. In landmark films such as Letter from Siberia, La Jetée, Sans Soleil, and Level Five, he has overturned cinematic conventions by confounding the distinction between documentary and fiction, writing and visual recording, and the still and moving image. Yet these works are only the tip of the iceberg; Marker's career has also encompassed writing, photography, television, and digital multimedia.
Chris Marker is the first systematic examination of Marker's complete oeuvre. Here, Catherine Lupton traces the development and transformation of the artist's work from the late 1940s, when he began to work as a poet, novelist, and critic for the French journal Esprit, through the 1990s and the release of his most recent works, including Level Five and the CD-ROM Immemory. Lupton explicates Marker's work as a circular trajectory, with each project recycling and referring back to earlier works as well as to a host of adopted texts, always proceeding by oblique association and lateral digression. This trajectory, which Lupton outlines with great care and precision, is critical to understanding Marker's abiding obsession: the forms and operations of human memory. With this theme as her architecture, Lupton presents the most comprehensive and incisive analysis of Marker to date.
Incorporating historical events and cultural contexts that have informed each phase of Marker's career, Lupton gives readers access to an artist who stands outside of the mainstream and thus defies easy explanation. There is no better guide than Lupton's to this modern master's prolific and multidimensional career.

Magic Marker.......2006-04-03
It's hard for a biographer to sink her teeth into an elusive figure like Chris Marker, for Marker is famous for not allowing himself to be interviewed, or even photographed, and when fans write to him asking for a signed photo, he sends back a picture of a cat, or sometimes an owl. He seems to see himself as an owl and made a great picture recently screened here in San Francisco called THE GRIN OF THE OWL. And by the way, Chris Marker isn't even his real name. And no one knows for sure if the legends about his early life are true. For example, people say he was the youngest member of the French Resistance. That would certainly be romantic if it were true. But what if his background wasn't exactly as "PC" as the myth?
Catherine Lupton explores all these quandaries and more in her new guide to Marker's life and work. Of course the work deserves the extended treatment that she gives it. His body of work is little known in the USA, for only a few of his films have gained purchase even in the "cinematheque" set, and if you tried something like Netflix I shudder to think what would turn up, they would probably send you Gilliam's TWELVE MONKEYS. Marker has a tortured relationship to his own films, and in recent years has taken on the extended project of re-working, re-editing, and re-presenting his earlier films in a new, gallery based context which is quite site-specific. It would probably be easy enough to catch a showing of LA JETEE, and here in San Francisco the later SANS SOLEIL has a lot of cult appeal, for its beautiful shots of our wonderful city are as dazzling as any Richard Lester captured in PETULIA. But the rest of the films are a terra incognita and we are lucky to have such a careful, scrupulous and intelligent commentator as Catherine Lupton to narrativize them o skillfully.
Of the ones she describes, I am looking forward most to seeing IF I HAD FOUR CAMELS and REMEMBRANCE OF THINGS TO COME (co-directed with Yannick Bellon). There is one sequence in LA JETEE, otherwise composed--like CAMELS and REMEMBRANCE--of still photos, held in frame for slightly varying lengths of time--in which a flash of movement rips through the film, and shakes the whole world of cinema to its foundation. It is like watching movies for the very first time. Marker is quite old now, I suppose, perhaps 85, so maybe he wasn't the YOUNGEST member of the Resistance, just the most legendary. He still sounds as though he has plenty of tricks left in his bag. As the years go by his experiments with texture and "truth" seem more and more relevant, so that as Fellini (for example) seems less and less interesting as an artist, the balance tips the other way in the direction of "nonfiction" and Chris Marker.
Chris Marker: Memories of the Future.......2005-06-28
Marker's extraordinary filmography includes Letter from Siberia (1958), La Jetee (1962), Sans Soleil (1982) and Level Five (1996). The works of this French, "techno-shaman" exceed the boundaries of conventional cinema, often by using only still photographs and music in a film. Marker's body of work is international in scope and includes the mediums of writing, photography, filmmaking, video, television and digital multimedia. The biographer, Catherine Lupton, is a Senior Lecturer in Film & Television Studies at Roehampton University in London. She describes Marker's odyssey from the late 1940s, when he began to work as a critic and writer for the French journal Esprit with Alain Resnais and other intelligentsia, to his most recent work, a multimedia CD-ROM called Immemory. Not much is known about Marker's life pre-World War II, other than he served as a parachutist with the U.S. Army and was involved with the French Resistance. Other oddities about Marker include his abstinence from being photographed, unless he is hidden behind a camera. Media requests for a picture of the auteur usually result in an image of a cat or an owl. Even his name is not real, as Chris Marker is one of several pseudonyms used by the 84-year old enigmatic filmmaker. Marker's relationship with Yves Montand and Simone Signoret is discussed in the book, as well as his fascination with the Russian kino-train director, Alexander Medvekin. In 1962, two of his films, the 29 minute La Jatee (the source for Terry Gilliam's Twelve Monkeys) and the feature, Le Joli mai, are two of the major highlights in a long and experimental career of this modern-day master, whose films were created in France, Russia, China, Africa and the United States. Marker's life is nearly as obtuse as the hidden meanings in his works.

Customer Reviews:
Pre Psych School reference.......2000-10-14
This is a book every student concidering a career in Psycology or Psychiatry should read, and take an honest look at. In a day when these professions solution is to drug people, and research now shows that a moderate excercise program to remedy depression better than drugs do, it is an honest look at those professions. It is a book taking a look at a "profession" that uses a vote of hand to discover new deseases of the mind, rather than scientific evidence. I highly recommend this book to anyone concidering a career in these fields. Then go and become a Vet or something!
SHRINK ASSAULT - VERY FUNNY.......2000-09-19
This book is excellent. If you're a budding psych then I highly recommend this book. It manages to balance out the view of psychs that many students are submitted to during their degrees. We're certainly not all wonderful and if any psychs admitted to the fact that they don't have a clue what they're doing, then it would be a step in the right direction. The book takes a humorous look at the torture psychs inflict upon the mentally ill, the arrogance some psychs display and the 'fabulous' logic some exude.
Buy the book - it will provide insight to those who have not yet been exposed to the evil side of psychs and it will provide humor to those who have.
Thought-provoking, controversial, entertaining, insightful........2000-06-06
Shrink Assault: A Bitter Humor Look At The Psychs' Evil Empire is a serious and challenging critique and criticism of the psychological profession encompassing both psychologists and psychiatrists. Attorney and investigator Lorenzo Samuel argues that psychologists and psychiatrists have been detrimental to the fields of mental health law, education, religion, business, the arts, entertainment, and family life. Shrink Assault is a compilation of essays, vignettes, and jokes that address the fields of psychology and psychiatry, as well as the attitudes and occasional absurdities of their practitioners. Shrink Assault is thought-provoking, controversial, entertaining, insightful, and recommended reading for the students, practitioners, and clients of psychological and psychiatric services.

Robbo the Roadie.......2006-05-11
I was very disappointed with this book. I was hoping for an all access pass to the happenings of the band with some insights on the bands dynamics. Unfortunately, that was summed up in about 10 pages. If you already know that they fired their drummer, that they drank uncontrollably, Noel is Oasis, and Liam is an eccentric rock star there's no need to buy this book.
Robbo is no doubt a talented writer who uses flowery language and abstract excerpts and could surely write circles around other authors but he forgets what his book is about. I don't care that he was in the millitary or how hard it was to be a babysitter to Oasis. Tell me more about the band. If you want to know more about Oasis watch the Definitely Maybe DVD interviews or at worst the Live Forever DVD. You'll learn alot more about the inner workings of the band told by the band instead of by a disgruntled ex roadie.
Robbo delivers with first-hand account of life with Oasis........1999-06-03
Ian Robertson's "What's the Story?" is a fascinating account of life with Oasis. Robertson focuses on his personal dealings with Oasis, instead of relying on the typical assumptions made about Oasis like most who have written about Oasis. Robertson, their former tour manager, delivers his story with a simple, honest, style that keeps you riveted as you see the Gallagher brothers swallowed by fame. Instead of slamming the band that eventually let him go, Robertson focuses on the respect he had for the talented and loyal Noel Gallagher, while allowing the reader insight into the bizzare emotional behavior of Liam. Robbo never directly attacks the younger Gallagher, he even notes that Liam has a caring side to him that is usually not present in most rock stars. However, Robbo still relives accounts of times that Liam's behavior drove Oasis to the edge. An excellent book, Robertson puts his heart and soul into telling the reader what life with Oasis was like for him without becoming overemotional and writing a biased, selfish book. (Which is what many in his position would have done.) Definitely five stars.
Creatively written by Robertson as it really happened........1998-11-14
Robertson gave this book to people as he saw the scenes of Oasis. With his candid first hand experiece of dealing with the Gallahgers, Robbo wrote about the highs and lows of the life he lived. He made us realize that fame might not be what most people think about it.
Totally Top for the manchester boys!.......1998-07-01
A great book no matter if your a huge fan that thinks you know EVERYTHING about the band or a newbie, its not a big info book its more a "this is what happened in this number of days" kinda book.
Top!.......1997-10-13
This book is very exciting...it is different than any other one I've read on Oasis. Told from the view point of Robbo, who was on tour with them, it has tons of back stage stories that you'll never find anywhere else. From Liam and Bonehead's talk about baths, to Robbo's endless fights with Liam....it's top all the way!

Excellent James Dean Calendar.......2005-01-18
I don't know why Amazon doesn't have a picture of the front and back of this calendar. I bought this calendar because I think it has better pictures of James Dean than other calendars. But that is just my opinion.
Each month has a big picture of James Dean, and in smaller letters and numbers, the month preceding and the month after the current month are listed next to the BIG current month. There is also a smaller picture of James Dean (different from the BIG picture for that month) at the bottom with a quote by James Dean.
I could have put this calendar up in September 2004 because it has the last 4 months of last year in it. I'm very happy with this calendar. I've never had a James Dean calendar, but I'll enjoy looking at that gorgeous face and reading his thoughtful quotes this year.
Bottom line: I bought this calendar for the pictures, but the quotes are a nice touch.

ASIN: 0415250390 |
Book Description
While the family and its role continues to be a key topic in social and government policy, much of the literature is concerned with describing the dramatic changes that are taking place. By contrast, this book directly addresses the social processes responsible for these changes - how social policy interacts with what families actually do. With contributions from the UK, and North America, Analysing Families provides the framework within which to understand an increasingly important element in social policy.

A Masterpiece of German Armor.......2001-02-03
This book is an authoratative reference listing nearly everything in the German mobile arsenal. I am amazed at the detail. It even has the Leichte Truppenluftschutz Kraftwagen (Kfz 4). Now, who's ever heard of that thing. It has pictures, as well as design, production, field history, and unit markings information on each vehicle. This is a great modeling reference for unusual variants, and the attention to half-tracks and soft-skinned vehicles makes it a gem. The only fault being all the pics are black and white, so it's not much good for camo schemes.
Amazing Book........1998-04-15
I am a modeler and have found this book to be invaluable to me in it's information, pictures and # of differant vehicles it has. This book should be on the shelf of every military modeler. I am surprised it is out of print. I bought my copy only a year ago.
Exhaustively detailed reference work........1997-08-08
Very authoritative reference with particular strengths being the assignment of proper Wk.No. to models and manufacturers and clear definition of all specific variants and sub-variants. Carries details for not only major panzers, but also half-tracks and wheeled armored cars. Includes large number of experimental and prototype versions and is well illustrated with clear photographs and technical drawings. Excellent reference for anyone interested in WWII armor

Book Description
The first book to prove CIA and U.S. government complicity in global drug trafficking, The Politics of Heroin includes meticulous documentation of dishonesty and dirty dealings at the highest levels from the Cold War until today. Maintaining a global perspective, this groundbreaking study details the mechanics of drug trafficking in Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and South and Central America. New chapters detail U.S. involvement in the narcotics trade in Afghanistan and Pakistan before and after the fall of the Taliban, and how U.S. drug policy in Central America and Colombia has increased the global supply of illicit drugs.
Customer Reviews:
A Thorough Guide to Understanding the History of Heroin Trade.......2007-08-06
This is quite a detailed and academic reference that no college student should be without. I have been out of graduate school for over 10 years and it took me nearly 2 weeks to complete and comprehend the facts of the book. There are just so many places and names in the book that one can easily get lost and confused. Nevertheless, the author gives the reader and complete history of the heroin trade starting with 19th century opium production and use in China to present day heroin production, distribution, and consumption that is coming out of Afghanistan. I highly recommend this book to everyone who wants to really understand why we are losing the War on Drugs. You want to know the truth about the drug trade? Then this is the book for you.
an eye-opening read.......2007-03-21
this book is an engrossing look at the war on drugs.it gives detailed documentation on how our government influenced other governments and the affect this had on drug distribution in America.
Well Done, Dr. McCoy!.......2006-08-13
Professor Alfed McCoy has here rendered a very important contribution to the overall understanding of United States policy in the post-World War II era. This thoroughly documented and well written text illustrates CIA complicity in the narcotics trade from the Golden Triangle of Southeast Asia, to the mountains of Afghanistan, and finally to the highlands of the Andes. Other authors who write of CIA complicity in various nefarious deeds seem to cite this important work more than any other.
One might argue that the level of detail, particularly wtih regard to the various machinations of the KMT army and various sects within Burma, Thailand, and Laos is a little much for the general reader. However, in acknowledging this, we can only assert that this is an observation rather a criticism. McCoy's book is an excellent source. The writing, as previously mentioned, is excellent, and the conclusions terribly important. Read it. And be both well informed, and frankly disturbed in the process. Well done, Dr. McCoy!
Wanted more on the Golden Crescent as well..........2002-02-05
The author is no doubt the master of his domain in as far as the Southeast Asia (the Golden Triangle) is concerned, but only 20 or so pages talk about Golden Crescent, while more than 400 pages are about very minutely detailed drug trade (& politics/ economics) of the Golden Triangle. Considering that countries like Pakistan and Afghanistan earn more than $12b in drug trade every year (only about $1b worth foreign exchange in legal exports), the importance of drug money in financing these breeding grounds of terrorism can't be emphasised enough.
I have to admit that the writing style lacks pace, and I was often confused with the different names that keep cropping up as the author goes back and forth in history. This is a great book for anyone wanting to understand the Southeast Asia though.
A must read during the "war on terrorism".......2001-10-29
Ever since the publication of this updated edition
in 1991, this book has been an essential text
for those trying to understand the "war on
drugs," the exceedingly dangerous role of the CIA
in influencing the course of history, and
historical relations between drugs and empire.
But now the book takes on crucial new
significance. Anybody attempting to comprehend
how billions of U.S. dollars were spent in
creating the agents and forces that launched
the September 11 attacks should read McCoy's
final chapter. And this chapter suggests
what a treacherous path has now been chosedn for ou
nation and the world by the very same people
who created and nurtured the Frankenstein's monster
now lurking in Afghanistan and developing
new schemes for destroying its creator.

Book Description
The river is shallow. At low tide sandbars and oyster-beds occupy much of its breadth; and even when it looked full, a great blue heron would very likely be wading in the middle of it. That was a sight to which I had grown accustomed in Florida, where this bird, familiarly known as "the major," is apparently ubiquitous. Too big to be easily hidden, it is also, as a general thing, too wary to be approached within gunshot.
