Book Description
For many people, art is at once a form of self-expression and discovery. Perhaps that's why collage, which is based on the idea of spontaneously layering images and symbols, is a favorite medium for crafters of all kinds.
This book approaches the topic by theme: 5 chapters present 20 projects that deal with expressing personal creativity, exploring and recording relationships, dreaming and wishing, finding inspiration in nature, and creating visual memoirs.
The instructions tell how to create a personalized project, sharing necessary techniques while suggesting ideas for substituting personal themes and materials. The directions are a starting point to encourage the reader's own artistic journey, guiding the reader to contemplate, explore, and express thoughts and feelings through the medium of collage.
An inspirational gallery concludes the book, with another 26 projects by leading artists in the field. Whether a person's passion is stamping, decoupage, painting or paper art, this book shows how various collage techniques can combine to help any crafter or artist improve their craft and enrich their soul.
Holly Harrison is a freelance writer and editor. Her first craft book, Angel Crafts: Graceful Gifts, Inspired Designs, was published by Rockport in April 2002. She has also contributed to numerous magazines, including Metropolitan Home. She lives in Concord, Massachusetts.
Paula Grasdal is a printmaker and mixed-media artist living in the Seattle area. She has contributed to several other Rockport books, including Angel Crafts: Graceful Gifts, Inspired Designs, The Crafter's Project Book, and Making Shadow Boxes and Shrines. Her work has been exhibited in galleries in the U.S. and Canada.

WOW.......2005-08-19
This isn't your average Artsy Coffee Table book! At first and second glance this book was on the verge of being traded until I actually read the words! After reading the first artist's opening page, I found myself intrigued and excited to see "what's next". The author not only formatted the book in a way that helped build upon existing skills but also increasing new found skills. The contributing artists personal commentary was fun to read and the techniques they shared invaluable. Excellent book not only for the artist teaching value but also for the search for inner "soul" searching.
A wonderful resource.......2005-01-24
This is a terrific book for anyone interested in collage as an art as opposed to a craft. There is a wide range of work displayed, covering a number of different styles. Interspersed with the projects in the book are several discussions of such techniques and processes as using encaustics, finding symbols, using different means of transforming papers, transferring images, using collage as a medium for your memoirs, etc. There are also useful and inspiring sidebars throughout that help the artist come up with ideas and techniques they may never have thought of before.
AN earlier reviewer objects to the fact that the directions for the projects are not extremely precise. I consider that one of the great strengths of the book--I am not interested in recreating the exact piece of art displayed, I want to learn new methods to interpret my own ideas. There are some books and magazines out there that tell you exactly what brand name products to use in exactly which colors. Those books are intended for a different audience. This book is meant for those who are not afraid to experiment and learn. It encourages the reader to try new processes and new approaches, rather than handing out exact formulas.
Here are just some of the techniques covered in various projects: assemblage, encaustic, monotype, oil pastels, tissue-paper lamination, using foraged natural materials, making a collaged art doll, paper-pulp casting, transferring photos to different surfaces, sanding back to reveal underlayers... There is a tremendous amount to be learned from this book. It is not quite as showy as True Colors, but it serves a different purpose. True Colors, as delightful as it is, is primarily eye candy, and is limited to altered books. Collage For The SOul covers a much wider spectrum of collage work, and provides much more information on techniques for the artist.
I recommend this book and Gerald Brommer's collage book as THE two to own, if you can only have two. I can hardly wait for the next collage book by the same team, which is due out soon.
Disappointing!.......2004-12-15
If you are buying every book on this subject, this could be among them. However, if making a choice, this should not be a priority. The projects are not inspiring, a challenge considering the fine artists composing them. They show some interesting techniques, but who wants to use them considering what we're offered as goals? I would recommend "True Colors", by Harrison," Altered Books Workshop", by Brazelton, and "Making Memory Books and Journals by Hand", (a marvelous compilation of 42 projects put together by Thunder Bay Press) as being FAR more worthwhile.
Lackluster.......2003-09-28
I was thoroughly disappointed in this book. Based on reviewer comments I hastened to buy it, and then found it uninspiring. It presented nothing new, not an iota of soul and seemed like a simple compendium of collage work with some scattered instructions that may not be sufficiently clear.
Collage for the Soul.......2003-08-01
If you are a collage artist, you will want to purchase this book. It is not a "how to" book but a wonderful resource of images and artists you might not find anywhere else. Many different styles of collage are represented and I find something new and inspiring everytime I look at it! There are many women creating in the collage world today and not enough resources to find them...get this book and see new images and artists! The collages are shown in beautiful, full page reproductions so that you can study the details. Highly recommend!

Book Description
Cross a Saturday-night special with the Saturday-morning cartoons and you get a sense of the shady-sweet flavor of this Atlanta-based artist's paintings. Crayola-colored refugees from the toy chest--Teddy bears, elephants, and rag dolls--don human garb and star in ambiguous narratives laced with menace. A green horse holds a gun to the head of an orange bear while a blasa yellow doll checks his watch; a red elephant offers candy to a reticent purple bear cub in knee socks. Over all, Griffin gives us a sense of compassion, which is not to say hope, for his hapless menagerie. --The New Yorker This is the first catalog devoted to the work of Kojo Griffin, an up-and-coming artist whose work was featured in Freestyle at the Studio Museum in Harlem, New York.

Book Description
Successful audio-visual presentations are the result of careful management by--as well as creative collaboration between--the client and the professional communications firm. Because of their high visibility within the corporation, presentations risk falling prey to "script by committee" unless there is a clear plan at hand for managing the project. Executives who find themselves responsible for a presentation need to be fully aware of what audio-visual can and cannot do--and how to go about getting it done right. In this how-to guide for corporate executives, author Richard Worth covers every step of the process in sequence, from determining objectives to preparing for production and post-production. While the emphasis is on working with an audio-visual professional, Worth also includes "do-it-yourself" tips for readers who want to keep the project in-house. Selecting slides, video, film or multimedia is one of the first choices to make. This decision, like others that follow, should be based on a determination of purpose, audience and message. Worth provides easy-to-follow worksheets to help get the planning process going. Readers looking for budget guidelines will learn how much money they will need to invest to get the presentations they want. And, to help readers select the communications professional they will be working with, Worth offers down-to-earth advice based on his years of practical experience. In non-technical language, he critiques and analyzes samples of script proposals and treatments, providing valuable insight into the creative process. Any executive or manager responsible for sales, training, public relations, fund-raising, employee relations, or recruitment will find this a valuable resource for planning and implementing effective presentations.

Book Description
Told in the words of the musicians themselves, Keeping the Beat on the Street celebrates the renewed passion and pageantry among black brass bands in New Orleans. Mick Burns introduces the people who play the music and shares their insights, showing why New Orleans is the place where jazz continues to grow.
Uniformed brass bands have been around since the late-nineteenth century, throughout Europe and the United States, but African American brass bands in New Orleans have always played music differently: the way it is lived on the street. Performing in funeral processions and in parades for social clubs, they learned how to play by interacting with their audiences. This spontaneity and feeling became trademarks of jazz.
Brass bands waned during the civil rights era but revived around 1970 and then flourished in the 1980s, when the music became cool with the younger generation. In the only book to cover this revival, Burns interviews members from a variety of bands, including the Fairview Baptist Church Brass Band, the Dirty Dozen, Tuba Fats' Chosen Few, and the Rebirth Brass Band. He captures their thoughts about the music, their careers, audiences, influences from rap and hip-hop, the resurgence of New Orleans social and pleasure clubs and second lines, traditional versus funk style, recording deals, and touring.
"My dream is I would love to win a Grammy with a brass band," confides Philip Frazier III of the Rebirth Brass Band. "But if I had to do it again for no money, I would, because I love doing it." For anyone who loves jazz and the city where it was born, Keeping the Beat on the Street is a book to savor.
Customer Reviews:
Inspiring Time Line of NOLA Brass Bands .......2007-04-19
Dating back to Danny Barker, Tuba Fats and Leroy Jones in the 1970s, this book takes you on a personal tour of the progression of NOLA Brass Bands. It is essentially the evolution of this artform as told by the people leading this renaissance. I picked this book up and couldn't put it down!
This music has propagated throughout the country to include groups based in NY, Boston, Minneapolis, and even Madison WI. It is nice to hear the stories of the Rebirth, Dirty Dozen, Fairview and Hurricane Bands, and the most recent generations that include New Birth, Soul Rebels and others. Long live NOLA Brass Music!
An interesting overview of pre-Katrina Brass Band history.......2007-04-02
This book gives an overview of the history of brass bands as told by the musicians themselves. It's interesting hearing the differences between the older brass bands and the newer brass bands, and how they regard themselves and the other bands. The social context of brass band music in New Orleans is incredibly interesting. It starts in school and lasts for life. To see a history such as this is intriguing.
I do wish that they would update the book with post-Katrina information, and I do wish that they would tell more about the younger, up and coming brass bands that are playing all over New Orleans.

Book Description
You can take steps to ward off cancer, starting right now--and this book shows you how. Want to add twenty years or more of disease-free living to your life? Miraculous as it may seem, the means to do it are not in a lab but in your own kitchen. Cutting-edge scientific research now shows that the human body depends on hundreds of different food compounds to keep its immune system at maximum strength. These phytochemicals (phyto from the Greek word for plant) protect us from cancer and heart disease as well as other degenerative diseases that ordinarily creep up on us as our immune systems grow weaker with age. With over 100 delicious recipes, this book shows you how to maximize your resistance to cancer and other diseases by changing how you eat and think about food. The distinct colors of various foods play different roles in neutralizing harmful substances before they can attack your body cells. Dr. Martin Katahn, who revolutionized the science of weight loss with his T-Factor Diet, shows us how to recognize the essential phytochemicals and understand how they work together. He also explains how diet can be combined for maximum effectiveness with exercise, to increase energy and reduce stress. Originally published in hardcover under the title The Tri-Color Diet.

A first-rate resource for Stonewall.......1999-11-05
One of the Civil War's most recognized and majestic figures, Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson, is portrayed in this illustrated biography, Stonewall Jackson: A Life Portrait. The author describes how a "backwoods boy" of Virginia finds his way to West Point, struggles as a student but discovers an important part of him in the War with Mexico. And later as a teacher at Virginia Military Institute, he again struggles to find personal peace, and would only do so when war is declared between the states, and the destined "Stonewall" discovers his mark in this world. A fascinating read and wonderfully illustrated, Stonewall Jackson: A Life Portrait belongs in every library, and on the bookshelf of every historian or fan of American history.
Book Description
Since the September 11 attacks on the United States, the Bush administration has come under fire for its methods of combating terrorism. Waging war against al Qaeda has proven to be a legal quagmire, with critics claiming that the administration's response in Afghanistan and Iraq is unconstitutional. The war on terror—and, in a larger sense, the administration's decision to withdraw from the ABM Treaty and the Kyoto accords—has many wondering whether the constitutional framework for making foreign affairs decisions has been discarded by the present administration.
John Yoo, formerly a lawyer in the Department of Justice, here makes the case for a completely new approach to understanding what the Constitution says about foreign affairs, particularly the powers of war and peace. Looking to American history, Yoo points out that from Truman and Korea to Clinton's intervention in Kosovo, American presidents have had to act decisively on the world stage without a declaration of war. They are able to do so, Yoo argues, because the Constitution grants the president, Congress, and the courts very different powers, requiring them to negotiate the country's foreign policy. Yoo roots his controversial analysis in a brilliant reconstruction of the original understanding of the foreign affairs power and supplements it with arguments based on constitutional text, structure, and history.
Accessibly blending historical arguments with current policy debates, The Powers of War and Peace will no doubt be hotly debated. And while the questions it addresses are as old and fundamental as the Constitution itself, America's response to the September 11 attacks has renewed them with even greater force and urgency.
“Can the president of the United States do whatever he likes in wartime without oversight from Congress or the courts? This year, the issue came to a head as the Bush administration struggled to maintain its aggressive approach to the detention and interrogation of suspected enemy combatants in the war on terrorism. But this was also the year that the administration’s claims about presidential supremacy received their most sustained intellectual defense [in] The Powers of War and Peace.”—Jeffrey Rosen, New York Times
“Yoo’s theory promotes frank discussion of the national interest and makes it harder for politicians to parade policy conflicts as constitutional crises. Most important, Yoo’s approach offers a way to renew our political system’s democratic vigor.”—David B. Rivkin Jr. and Carlos Ramos-Mrosovsky, National Review
Customer Reviews:
Reasoned.......2007-05-13
John Yoo's book makes cogent arguments based upon a careful legal analysis and established constitutional principles. A fine contribution to the debate of our times.
Terrifying Justice Department Double Think.......2006-10-06
Mr Yoo moves on from his earlier arguments that torture falls at a point slightly short of physical death, organ failure or loss of limb. Mr Yoo makes some interesting if devastating points with his new theories. The President's war powers, he argues, allow him to do, basically, whatever he wants. The President may, if he chooses, crush the genitals of children, maim, torture or kill civilians. In this respect one might remember that Bush ordered an air strike on the house occupied by the infant grandchildren of Saddam Hussein AFTER the end of the Iraq war and even though the house was surrounded by US troops. The President is limited, according to Mr Yoo, only by how he CHOOSES to interpret International Treaties and as he has the power to repudiate such treaties or ignore them entirely (as in the International Human Rights for the Child Treaty, the Geneva Convention or the Treaty of Vienna,) then, this means that presidential power is absolute EVEN if despotic criminal or tyrannical. Mr Yoo appears now to say that the President and his henchmen, cronies and agencies MAY indeed use indiscriminant torture. Mr Yoo however does not adequately explain how the President can thus overturn congressional treaty ratification. As what constitutes a 'time of war' is also up to the President and does not rely on any 'legal' declaration of war (which is a matter of international law to which the US is thus not subject,) then the US may have, effectively, a Despot Emperor for President. Does the 'War on Drugs' thus give the President the same wartime powers as he asserts for his 'War on Terror' - an undeclared war on no particular nation state? Is the US thus always in a state of war? This is interesting, not just semantically, as the District and Supreme Courts appear to agree with Mr Yoo's interpretation, blocking cases connected with this on grounds of national security whilst Congress does not appear to care. Perhaps Clinton should have used Mr Yoo's arguments in the Monical Lewinsky scandal and impeachment hearings. War powers might have thus allowed him to do whatever he wanted with his cigar and to lie about it in the national interest. The problem with Mr Yoo's argument is that Checks and Balances thus no longer appear to exist. Interestingly if one applies Mr Yoo's arguments to their logical end he becomes an eloquent advocate for terrorism or for the Holocaust where the ends justify the use of any means, however horrible. Of course, either this is pretty much nonsense and makes toilet paper of the Declaration of Independence, Magna Carta, democracy and human rights OR the truth is more terrifying and the US is now a Stalinist or Nazi state. I suspect Mr Yoo could be subject to arrest as a war criminal should he ever leave the United States and visit a civilised country???
Yoo has no clue!.......2006-06-23
The 2 biggest mistakes made by government in my lifetime are Congress giving away war powers in 1965 and 2002. The constitution holds that declaring war is the responsibility of the Congress. If the Executive has grounds for war let him/her present them and Ccongress vote. Twice I have seen Congress abdicate this important power with disasterous results. This is just one of many examples why Yoo has no clue.
This book's point about constitutional checks and balances were once taught in 8th grade civics class........2006-05-26
The outrage this book caused on publication is a sign of the incredible ignorance so prevalent these days about was once common knowledge--that the powers of the executive, legislative, and judicial branches exist in parallel under the elegant system of checks and balances of the Constitution, each with their separate skill set and functions. This book is a necessary defense of the traditional constitutional idea that the executive branch has primacy in matters of war, national security, and foreign policy. It is sad that otherwise sensible people like Neal Katyal and Stuart Taylor should tout outre ideas about the Constitution as a big sandbag over the head of the President most especially in war, national security and foreign policy, as if this idea, which is strictly the invention of the left, were Con Law 101. It is so Nixon era. But there you go. The "me generation" took over the academy, threw out all the Rembrandts, and filled it up with their Hello Kitty and Marilyn tchotchkes.
Important to understand Constitution after 9/11.......2006-02-01
This is an important book in order to understand the Constitution and the response to 9/11. The attacks on this book here are ridiculous. Even liberal critics of the Bush administration and Yoo think this is an important book. Cass Sunstein, a famous liberal law professor, wrote a review in the New Republic that said: "The most important theorist of the 9/11 Constitution is John Yoo." He says "Yoo has offered an inventive and provocative set of arguments about fundamental questions, and he presents his arguments with unmistakable determination and all the skill of a good lawyer."

Book Description
HANZAB is one of the world's major ornithological projects, and the first two volumes have attracted both critical praise and an international market. Volume 3 covers 129 species - the pratincoles, migratory waders and shore-birds, skuas, gulls and terns, and pigeons and doves. Many of the birds are virtually cosmopolitan in their distribution and are familiar to ornithologists throughout the world; such as the migratory waders which travel thousands of kilometres each year from their breeding grounds in the northern hemisphere to spend the southern winter in Australia and New Zealand. Information is presented in sections covering field identification, habitat, distribution and population, movements, food, social organization, social behaviour, voice, breeding, and plumages. Each account has a full list of references and black-and-white illustrations of behavioural postures and plumage features, maps showing breeding and non-breeding distribution, sonograms of calls and songs, and diagrams of timing of breeding and moulting.
