Customer Reviews:
I guess it depends on what you mean by serious.......2007-04-08
When she says serious... in the last few pages she tells you about becoming a full time artist, pros and cons kind of thing and options. She gives suggestions of places you can look into to show your work, but does not tell you how, just where to go. She does however say to go to the library to find out more or the internet. I guess most people don't know that, to me it is obvious. But hey, now you know and you didn't have to buy the book!
The artwork in the book sucks. It lacks depth and looks flat. Sure there is color, but it all seems to have the same pressure to it. Some may be better than others, buy my eyes don't want to look at it long. So, a tip that I know in becoming a serious artist is that if you actually want people to buy your work, you will want to create something that captures the attention of the viewer and keeps them there. The more they look at your work or the longer, the more likely they will buy it. The only one in there that looked pretty cool was the monopoly picture.
It's odd, she shows some basic examples of creating the illusion of 3D using tonal values from light to dark as well as discussing form, volume and space... but does not fully carry it through in her own work.
I just think if your going to learn from an artist, you would want to learn from someone who can give a good example. Why not learn it the right way the first time? There are too many other books that could do it better for ya. Check out books by Ann Kullberg, Janie Gildow, Gary Greene, Vera Curnow, or even Bernard Poulin. These artists have books for beginners and advanced, check them out and find the level best for you. They are better examples to follow. And if you want to start selling find a book strickly for that. Though Ann Kullberg, in "colored pencil portraits step-by-step has a section where she explains how she sells her portraits.
Are you kidding?.......2007-03-30
How did this artist ever get this published? The artwork in this book is so amateurish I did not even want to read what he/she had to say. I don't want my pieces to look like theirs. It looked like junior high artwork. The proportions of animals were totally incorrect, color wasn't eye catching, pieces looked like crayon drawings. This must be self published. I returned the book I didn't even care that I lost my shipping costs, I would never look at it or read it again.
Not for beginners.......2007-02-06
I think this may be a fine book for more advanced artists. There was little help for true beginners, even"serious " ones. There was much philosophy and opionion, but little practical help.
THE book on Colored Pencil........2007-01-25
If you can only have one book on colored pencil, let it be this one. I had to buy another one when my professor saw it. It is another book that I read with pen and highlighter in hand. I couldn't just read it I had to study it.
The only book you need.......2006-10-29
If you can only buy one book on the art and craft of colored pencil, buy this one! If you have a hundered books on art, I'd still say: you need this one! Bet Borgeson is well known for her intelligence, wit, humor, and her refusal to "talk down" to the reader or student. Page for page, there is more useful information in this book than in any other art book on my shelves -- and most of it is invaluable for artists working in any medium. From the basics of "getting started," to the philosophy of an artist's life, this book is jam-packed with useful and thought provoking information. Its richness and quality call to mind Richard Schmid's _Alla Prima_ or Rex vicat Cole's _ The Artistic Anatomy of Trees_, two of my other personal favorites. I love this book!

Book Description
Innatural is about fragments of tropical nature, a distinguishing subject of Gian Paolo Barbieri's research, carried out all over the Southern Hemisphere, from Madagascar to the Seychelles, from Polynesia to Tahiti.
This deluxe book, consisting of 50 photographs sumptuously printed and created with large negatives, is organized in single pieces, as well as in "diptychs" and "polyptychs," proposing different variations on the same subject. The selection reflects the wealth of the references of the photographer, who constantly casts a glance at the history of art, in particular to Gauguin.
Barbieri is an insatiable worshipper of visual effects, a skilled creator of compositions that are as refined as they are artificial, celebrating detail and appreciating each trifle while denying any possible "truth."

Quite boring and redundant.......2005-12-15
This is without a doubt the most ill-concieved and designed photography book to be released in a number of years. Barbieri has shot a quite limited selection of average photos and has filled the book with three and four different toned variations of the majority of them. He shows the same image printed black & white, then selenium toned, then sepia toned, etc.. Quite boring and redundant.

An invite to adventures, heroes, battles and intrigue! .......2007-07-17
This book is a great overlay of what happened in Civil War North Carolina. The eastern coast and rivers, as well as the Outer Banks are all given a account. Decent maps that can be expected for some of the least written and talked about battles. From Cushing to Hoke, from Burnside to Lamb, all the commanders and their men are here, well detailed and spoken for. This is the book to wrap alll of North Carolina's coastal Civil War up in one bundle for buffs and non buffs alike. The author has away of wrapping the reader up into the excitement and history that is both real and fascinating. A great read, pick it up!
Highly readable popular history.......2004-05-26
The books in Trotter's trilogy, "The Civil War in North Carolina" (the other volumes are "Silk Flags and Cold Steel: The Piedmont" and "Bushwhackers: The Mountains"), were published as independent volumes and can be enjoyed as such. But one can't get a good understanding of the Civil War in North Carolina by reading only about a single region. I strongly suggest that serious students of the war, or of North Carolina, take time to read the entire trilogy.
Aside from John G. Barrett's "The Civil War in North Carolina," Trotter's trilogy is the only modern comprehensive account of the war in the Tar Heel state. (See also my review of Barrett's book at Amazon.com.) Unlike Barrett's rather academic, formal approach, Trotter is as concerned with telling some good stories as he is with documenting North Carolina's role in the war. He includes a fairly extensive bibliography in each volume, but apparently he relied mainly on published sources, and the footnotes are very sparse. This is not to say that his work is inaccurate or invalid, but it is hardly the ultimate account of the war in North Carolina.
His geographical division of the three volumes also presents some problems. Much information about the state's entry into the war and about its poltical aspects is found in the volume on the Piedmont, "Silk Flags and Cold Steel," but the most important battles in the first three years of the war -which had an influence on these political events -- are covered in "Ironclads and Columbiads." These two volumes also contain many later events that "interact," for example, the closing battles in March and April of 1865. And some events in "Bushwhackers" - most notably, Stoneman's cavalry raid in the final weeks of the war - also lap over into Piedmont. Again, a full understanding requires reading all three of these books. Trotter, while adopting a mildly pro-Confederate tone like Barrett's, doesn't do as good a job of tying events in North Carolina to those of the wider war.
"Ironclads and Columbiads" covers the most important battles in the state. In January 1862, Union forces began in earnest to occupy crucial points on the North Carolina coast. Within six months, Union army and naval forces effectively controlled coastal North Carolina from the Virginia line south to present-day Morehead City. Union setbacks in Virginia, however, led to the withdrawal of many federal soldiers from North Carolina, leaving only enough Union troops to hold coastal strongpoints like New Bern, "little" Washington, and Plymouth. Had the Union pressed harder in North Carolina in 1862 - e.g., reinforcing their units there and occupying Wilmington and Goldsboro (a vital railroad junction on the Wilmington-Weldon line) - the armies of the Confederacy might have been stretched much thinner than they were by the ineffective Union campaigns against Richmond, and may well have lost their principal port. Union control of eastern North Carolina would have been a major military and economic disaster for the Confederacy. Instead, the Union forces on the coast had to remain in fortified garrisons until 1865, occasionally venturing out to raid and forage in the rich farmlands of eastern North Carolina. Confederate forces retook Plymouth and Washington in 1864 but lost them again before the year was out.
One failing that Trotter shares with Barrett is the poor quality of his maps and the lack of description of battle sites, roads, and other places in modern terms. A copy of DeLorme's "North Carolina Atlas and Gazetteer" is a vital supplement to these three books; modern place names and locations of battles and other events should have been located using modern landmarks, included as footnotes.
Trotter's trilogy is "popular" history, entertainingly related and highly readable. (He doesn't hesitate to have occasional fun with purple prose- "The obsidian mountain night engulfed them like wraiths" -but the writing usually is lively and flows well.) There may be more recent and more thorough books about various aspects of the Civil War in North Carolina, but Trotter's trilogy presents an introductory survey in a convenient package.
A trip to my childhood..........2001-07-05
Growing up in NC, I saw all of the sights along the coast of Civil War importance. I tramped across Fort Fisher and loked out to sea over the ramparts of Fort Macon. I visited Roanoke and climbed the earthworks left over from the burnside expedition. I live in a state which the Civil War changed forever. North Carolina contributed the most soldiers (besides Virginia) to the Southern cause, and quite a few for the North. It is wonderful to see such a well-written book about this state. Even if you are not a North Carolinian, this book will tell you a lot about the Southern war effort. Wilmington, NC was the only port that blockade runners could enter during the latter half of the war, and so most of the South's supplies came through there. This book is a wonderful read, and has a novel-like feel. Great for all Civil War Buffs.
Ironclads and Columbiads: The Coast.......2001-05-26
This is one of the most excellent books I have ever read on the subject to the Civil War in North Carolina or any other theatre. It easily grabs your attention early on and holds on to it throughout the remainder of the book. It reads splendidly and the author does an excellent job in describing all aspects. Trotter definitely deserves serious recognition. It should be considered a major contribution to the Civil War reading community and a must for any serious student of the Civil War.
An easy to read history.......2000-06-20
This is a remarkably easy to read history that grabs your attention in the very beginning and never lets up. It reads as easily as a novel and should be a must for lovers of North Carolina.

Finalist for the Council on Foreign Relations Arthur Ross Book Award
One of the world’s foremost authorities on the subject of suicide terrorism, the esteemed political scientist Robert Pape has created the first comprehensive database of every suicide terrorist attack in the world from 1980 until today. In Dying to Win, Pape provides a groundbreaking demographic profile of modern suicide terrorist attackers–and his findings offer a powerful counterpoint to what we now accept as conventional wisdom on the topic. He also examines the early practitioners of this guerrilla tactic, including the ancient Jewish Zealots, who in A.D. 66 wished to liberate themselves from Roman occupation; the Ismaili Assassins, a Shi’ite Muslim sect in northern Iran in the eleventh and twelfth centuries; World War II’s Japanese kamikaze pilots, three thousand of whom crashed into U.S. naval vessels; and the Tamil Tigers in Sri Lanka, a secular, Marxist-Leninist organization responsible for more suicide terrorist attacks than any other group in history.
Dying to Win is a startling work of analysis grounded in fact, not politics, that recommends concrete ways for states to fight and prevent terrorist attacks now. Transcending speculation with systematic scholarship, this is one of the most important studies of the terrorist threat to the United States and its allies since 9/11.
“Invaluable . . . gives Americans an urgently needed basis for devising a strategy to defeat Osama bin Laden and other Islamist militants.”
–Michael Scheuer, author of Imperial Hubris
“Provocative . . . Pape wants to change the way you think about suicide bombings and explain why they are on the rise.”
–Henry Schuster, CNN.com
“Enlightening . . . sheds interesting light on a phenomenon often mistakenly believed to be restricted to the Middle East.”
–The Washington Post Book World
“Brilliant.”
–Peter Bergen, author of Holy War, Inc.

An attempt to understand suicidial terrorism.......2007-08-17
The attacks on 9/11 and other attacks around the world (such as the attacks in Britain and Spain, and the daily bombings in Iraq) have created a heightened interest in understanding terrorism in general and suicide terrorism in particular. Some, like Pape, believe that this form of terrorism is a recent phenomenon (since the 1980s). Others, like Mockaitis, (in his book The `New' Terrorism: Myths and Reality, believe that it bears striking resemblance to past movements. One can find several publications addressing specifically suicide terrorism from various different perspectives.
Pape believes that to understand the rational behind suicide terrorism, one needs to respond to the following questions:
1) Why does suicide terrorism make sense from the perspective of the organization financing, planning, training and ultimately taking responsibility for such attacks?
2) Why are suicide terrorists so willing to give up their lives for such acts?
3) Why does the organization receive broad support for terrorist activities? Accordingly, this book is divided into three parts, each addressing a question above. In each section he presents a thesis, which he then analyzes and presents evidence for.
The main points he brings out are that this form of terrorism is used when there is a perceived threat to one's homeland (by foreign occupation), its goals are nationalistic (not religious), and it is directed at democracies. Pape dismisses two suicide myths. First that it is carried out by only Muslim groups (he points to the Tamil Tigers as a counter-example). Second that these terrorists are poor, uneducated and fundamentalist. He states that recent events show the terrorist as having above average education and opportunity, and as being well integrated into his/her community-to the point where the greater good for the community overrides personal goals.
One may question the validity of Pape's theory and even the soundness of his statistical analysis. What is important is that a book like Dying to Win engages us in a dialogue that enables us to understand suicide terrorism. This in turn helps us craft policy that effectively protects those targets most vulnerable to such attacks and minimizes the organizations willing to carry out such attacks.
Armchair Interviews says: Robert A. Pape is Professor of Political Science at the University of Chicago specializing in international security affairs.
Suicide attacks have logic.......2007-07-30
An interesting co - relation about psycho - social and enviormental factors needed to know dealing with terrorism and suicide attacks.
Read This Book or Stop Watching the News.......2007-07-22
Everything we "know" about suicide terrorism is dead wrong. That is the most succint way to put it.
We are completely wrong and we need to rethink RIGHT NOW how America is going to fight terrorism if it does not understand it.
Pape finally puts forward a thesis which has explanatory power not only over Muslim suicide terrorism but suicide terrorism throughout the entire world. This is a must-read for anyone, their parents, and their communities.
Scholarly and relatively impartial.......2007-02-15
This book presents carefully researched evidence that suicide bombers are motivated primarily by a desire to force democracies to withdraw troops from the territories claimed by the bombers, that they use rational strategies to achieve their goals, and that suicide bombers are acting mainly out of a sense of duty (like kamikazes) rather than the insanity of ordinary suicides or a desire for rewards in the afterlife.
The book's style is fairly dry and slow to read.
He sounds like one of the most objective voices on this subject, although his objectivity is hard to verify. He is so careful to minimize partisan comments that his index only lists one entry for George Bush and none for Clinton. One place where this disappoints me is when he reports that no al-Qaeda suicide attackers came from any country described by the U.S. State Department as sponsoring terrorism. Since this covers a period including nearly 4 years of Clinton's term, it suggests that the problem of falsely connecting governments such as Saddam's with al-Qaeda is a more pervasive problem than just one dishonest president (although the State Department used a broader definition of terrorism than the suicide terrorism that the book deals with). I'm disappointed that Pape doesn't analyze this enough to determine how much of this problem preceded Bush.
His use of the word nationalism to describe al-Qaeda's aims doesn't sound quite right, but it is close to the territorial, tribalistic motives that his evidence points to.
It's only in the last few pages when he departs from reporting research and recommends strategies that he becomes unconvincing. His support for a fence over all of the U.S. - Mexican border seems unrelated to the rest of the book. Does he think stopping people from carrying bombs across the border will help (i.e. that it would be hard for a terrorist to make or buy a weapon after crossing the border)? Or does he hope to stop terrorists from crossing the border (which his book implies would require turning away nearly everyone from Islamic countries with U.S.-backed governments)?
He says "the idea that Islamic fundamentalism is on the verge of world domination ... is pure fantasy". His book provides some evidence for that conclusion, but it involves extrapolating from a small sample of terrorist campaigns to conclude al-Qaeda will stop at achievable goals. I'm uncomfortable with the way he dismissed such an important source of disagreement with excessive confidence and with limited analysis. (I'm also annoyed that he exaggerates the degree of alarmism of his opponents).
An Objective Approach to a Misunderstood Issue.......2007-01-13
Overall the book is good to read regardless if you agree with the conclusion or not. So you can at least take the presented facts and make up your own conclusions.
The book uses scientific methods to explain the suicide terrorism phenomena so keep that in mind for at some point it might sound boring or a little bit confusing.
The author might seem that he is contradicting himself at some points but he is just making a point so don't judge the book before you read it until the end.
I think this book presents a great window into the world of suicide terrorism and maybe its future.
