Book Description

Drama, dance, music, art, literature—all exciting tools for the K-6 classroom. But how do you make the most of them? By using the numerous hands-on activities and ideas in this popular, practical book. Here are dozens of daily routine ideas, integrated unit ideas, and adaptable classroom structures that set forth solid, dependable “how to's” for using the arts throughout the curriculum—in social studies and science, in reading and language arts, even in math. Only in this book will you find such a clear, straightforward summary of these five art forms. And only in this book will you find a clearly presented argument for integrating at least one art form into every lesson in every area—every day. Targeted topics include assessment, classroom management/discipline and intervention/adaptation for special needs.

3 out of 5 stars Too Many Words!.......2006-03-28

While I am sure this book may have some good ideas in it, they would be hard to find. This book is very wordy. I was looking for a book full of integration ideas, this book is full of more justifications of why the arts are important. I know why they are important, what more authors (including this one) need to do is tell us simply and practically how to do it better.

5 out of 5 stars Claudia Cornett Sparks Interest.......2002-11-26

I had the pleasure of having Claudia Cornett visit my school recently. She is a very energetic lady with a storehouse of great ideas! Her discussion, which was based on her book, made a whole room of teachers laugh and act silly. We were playing sock toss to help children with word chunks. We became actors with a simple pen. This pen became: a hairbrush, a microphone, a straw...

I can't wait to pick up a copy of this book and use all of the ideas in my classroom. Her energy and fire is contagious!

4 out of 5 stars A Sampler in Christian Aesthetics.......2001-04-02

This is a collection of brief speeches given the late Josef Pieper, one of the most popular Thomist philosophers of the last century. The topics addressed include work and leisure, music, seeing, sculpture, celebration, and contemplation.

The book's title is taken from St. Augustine's remark that "only he who loves can sing," and if there is an underlying theme to these occasional pieces it is that art and love, aesthetics and spirituality, cannot be divorced. A sample quote: "Contemplation is visual perception prompted by loving acceptance."

Due to their brevity, these essays can only be suggestive. But perhaps they may whet the reader's appetite for more substantial portions of Pieper's thoughtful yet accessible philosophizing.

5 out of 5 stars For Musicians, Philosophers, and Spiritual People Alike!.......2000-09-05

This is an excellent book that allows for the integration of appeciating the aesthetic value of a piece of art, poetry, or music to meditation and contemplation. What is more, the value of this small book is tremendous in content and wisdom, integrating the thought of some of the most intellectual geniuses, such as: Plato, Aristotle, Augustine, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, and many others. For such a small piece of work, it carries a lot of value and significance, which can be applied to our daily lives.

5 out of 5 stars Reflections on the spiritual value of art.......1997-10-04

This is a beautiful little book, actually a compil-
ation of lectures delivered at musical events and
openings. With references to the ancient philosophers,
it reminds us of the moral and spiritual force
of genuine "seeing" and "hearing." A learned series
of essays, but written in an accessible, and poetic, way.

5 out of 5 stars Three super books in ONE!.......2002-09-20

Three powerhouse writers Anne Stuart, Elizabeth Lowell and Barbara Delinksy with three full size novels in one!! This is how reprints should be done!!!

Anne Stuart the Queen of the blacksoul, blackhearted bad boys we loves, gives a change of pace with a smiling, kinder-gentler hero in Chain of Love. Cathy Whiteheart was barely pulling out of the deep depression after an abusive relationship, so her sister drags her on board aa yacht for a day in the sun. What she did not count on was Sin - Sinclair McDonald the owner of the boat being handsome, and pure male. He is imposing, terrifying and so bloody attractive that he send conflicting emotions running wild in a woman that has been hiding for life.
Sin is more than just sexy, he is funny and kind...something she is not used to in a man. These characters are warm, real and easy to love.

The dynamite Lowell gives us one of her best in Granite Man - the rock em - sockem Cowboy hero with a chip on his shoulder and a past bearing down on him. But is does not stop Mariah Mackenzie was slipping past his defences.

The Third is Delinsky's First, Best and Only - A CEO Marnie Lang meets with her first and best lover Drain Webster, could they make it work this time around? The Character captive your heart.

I love it when they reprint these books you might have missed first time around, but show respect to the readers and no try to push them off as individual books at big book prices.

a super buy of three super reads!!

I heard the author interviewed on a Chicago radio station and was enthralled. Ordered the book for my husband and was disappointed as I expected it to be a real "read" as opposed to a book that you skim. It's filled with little short paragraphs - more like a bathroom reader than a novel. Yet subject matter is interesting. Just not what I expected.

4 out of 5 stars This book is worth it!.......2000-08-18

A friend told me about this book and I must say that I was more than pleased with it. For anyone interested in politics and government, or just enjoys humor, this book is great! The hilarious situations and notable quotes will keep you reading for hours, although this book is great to read bits at a time.

This powerful mix of political and emotional intrigue is set against a backdrop of a Washington, D.C. that few Americans ever see. Book Description

Completed shortly before Joseph Stalin's death in 1953, the vysotkii, or "sky houses," still dominate the Moscow skyline today. Seven in all, they were the Soviet answer to the American skyscraper, transforming the Soviet capital from a feudal backwater into the city of the future. With their soaring towers and gothic architectural details, the vysotkas were intended to be enduring monuments to the workers state and to the glories of Communism-though they were built on the backs of slave laborers and, initially, the prerogative only of the Soviet elite. Now these imposing giants lie on the fault line between a world that has vanished and one still emerging from its ruins. When she moved to Moscow several years ago, journalist and Russia expert Anne Nivat settled into one of the vysotkas, the one that happens to overlook the Kremlin. She became fascinated by the building and learned everything she could about its history. As she got to know her neighbors and fellow tenants, Nivat discovered that they included some of the building's original inhabitants or their descendants, hand-chosen by Stalin and his henchman Lavrenti Beria (arrested and executed for high treason shortly after Stalin's death)-KGB operatives, Bolshoi ballerinas, and artists of Soviet agitprop. Living side by side with them were representatives of the "new Russia"---entrepreneurs, foreign investors, and oligarchs; as any Moscow real estate agent will tell you, Stalin-era buildings in today's market are some of the most coveted addresses in the city.By means of this decaying but still elegant Soviet icon, Nivat gives us a way of grasping the complexities of a country struggling to come to terms with its past and define its future. She allows the tenants of her vysotka to speak for themselves, to offer their perspectives on where Russia has been and where it is going. Some are keenly nostalgic for the days when the State dictated life. Others have prospered in the confusion that has reigned since the Evil Empire's fall and look to a market-driven economy to guide Russia to the Promised Land. Still others fall someplace between the two, anxious but hopeful, longing for yet also fearful of change. Taken together, the portraits of the vysotka's inhabitants provide a panorama of Russia today. The View from the Vysotka shows us life from the inside, evoking both the forces that have swept through this vast and fascinating nation over the course of the last half-century, as well as a n0 building that has managed to endure them.

2 out of 5 stars Good Idea, Wrong Writer.......2006-04-26

I read this book in the original French. Contrary to previous misimpressions, it was not translated by the author, Anne Nivat, but by Frances E. Forte (see copyright page in Look Inside). I don't know how much of the English text must be blamed on Forte but the original was unpromising.

In the early 2000's Nivat lived in one of two giant luxury apartment blocks (vysotkyi) built in Moscow in the early 50's but planned in the 30's (along with five similar buildings not used for dwellings). The French edition has a clutch of good color photographs of the overall building, The style is called "pastry shop", but that is unfair, it's rather a spread-out version of the turn-of-the-century Chicago School style, but covered in reddish-gold tile and with more attention to the tops. Urbanistically, however, it is a disaster as it blocks all thoroughfare over a very large area. Living there means living isolated from the city fabric, as if in a giant brick cruise ship at dock. (The building is in fact situated along an ancient dockside.)

This vysotka was built by slave labor, and the 900-odd apartments were not assigned communally, as was standard practice, but to single individuals and their family. Part went to people in the security services (which had "supplied" the labor), the rest to people in the arts, either nomenklatura or just famous. The building also housed a surveillance apparatus that would put Comrade Gonzales to shame - just having so many people assigned in shifts to listening and spying on everything you did made you nomenklatura at least in one sense. Homeland Security was definitely a make-work department inside a make-work system.

The book collects interviews with a score of the inhabitants, probably from 2001. Nivat's French is grammatically correct and fairly formal, but she is the opposite of a prose stylist. Nivat is unskilled at description and she makes practically no observations on non-vocal communication. The reader never really sees either the setting or the atmosphere of the interviews (which may have taken place in more than one session). But the worst is that all questions or prods are removed from the text and the remaining prose is formalized in a way that no one talks, and which erases all traces of personality. This reformatted speech makes up the core of the text.

The vysotka holds three kinds of inhabitants. Old people who moved in at the time the building opened, descendants who inherited their apartments, and richer people who bought theirs since 1990 (and often expensively renovated them). The series of interviews mostly follows that progression, and I would say that only the later two fifths are of interest. What could be interesting about the earlier interviewees disappears under the depersonalized prose, and because questions were not asked.

If you have only middling interest in Moscow and Moscovites, this isn't the book for you. Nor is it if you want to meet "new Russians"; it's a very special kind of new Russian that will move into this vysotka. If you want a testimony from the old and the new Moscow, then you may find it interesting, under the triple blanket of the interviewing style, the translation from the Russian and the re-translation from the French.

                                          5 out of 5 stars Stalin's Emerald City.......2005-09-21

French journalist Anne Nivat lives in Moscow, in a skyscraper called a vysotka (sky house). It overlooks the Kremlin and is one of the most desirable residences in the city. Designed to house 3,500 residents, it also has restaurants and shops on the ground floor. The original residents, handpicked by Stalin and his aides, were artists, high-level bureaucrats, and senior military people. Some of them still live there today, some of the apartments are occupied by their descendents, still others were purchased after the apartments were privatized.

Nivat sees the building as a microcosm of the New Russia. This is a hard case to make. Moscow is not typical of Russia, any more than New York is typical of America. And the vysotka is not typical of Moscow any more than Trump Tower is typical of New York. Still, there really is an interesting cross-section of residents there, and Nivat lets them do most of the talking in her book.

One resident, whose father sculpted many of the giant Lenin statues that used to decorate Moscow, summarized their attitudes. It all breaks down by age, he said. Those over seventy are nostalgic for the past, those in their fifties are disappointed and are having a hard time adjusting to the New Russia, those under forty have adapted one way or another, and the under-twenty-fives have never known anything else. That certainly holds true for those interviewed here. Older residents reminisce about when they or their parents were the toast of the town. They yearn for the good old days of Stalin. One of the lobby attendants is wistful about the changes since the fall of communism. "If only we had taken the best parts of the West, instead of choosing the worst!"

A common thread in these interviews is the affection everyone here has for Moscow. Even the most cynical, even the foreign residents, and especially Anne Nivat herself, love Moscow and Russia. Even as they are telling you what is wrong with the government, with the building, with Russia and Russians, they assure you that they wouldn't live anywhere else. And you believe them.

                                          1 out of 5 stars A terrible book by a terrible writer.......2005-08-12

The only thing good about this book is the cover, it is attractive and has a nice Pravda-style font. What's inside is rubbish.

Foremost, the rubbish is in bad English. We have sentences such as: "She calls them by... name and patronym, the father's given name, the respected... form of address in Russian". This sentence is wrong not only factually (it is *not* the father's given name), but also gramatically (what is the last clause related to?). And shouldn't it be Russia instead of Russian? Not to be outdone, two sentences later we get "A woman... with large hands..., Zinaida sweeps day and night". The bio at the back of the book tell us that Anne Nivat is a Russophile French native, so why oh why is she attempting to write in what should be at best her third language, and didn't anybody tell her that her English, well, sucks?

There's worse. What is this book about? What do you get out of it? The answer is "nothing", "zilch", "nada". In a book ostensibly related to buildings, there is *not a single picture*. Can you believe that? It is like a math book without a formula, a baseball book without a statistic, a history book without a date... you get the idea. The interviews with people are meandering, listless and pointless. The chapters are goalless. There is no whole to anything, it is just a bunch of spare parts. A bunch of scrap, really.

This book, which preceded _Misunderestimated_, is the one in which Bill Sammon began chronicling the presidency of George W. Bush. (_At Any Cost_ -- an excellent book as well -- was an account of Al Gore's attempts to steal the 2000 election, not of Bush's presidency itself.)

I read _Misunderestimated_ first, but this one is every bit as good. It begins with 9/11 and follows the Bush Administration's responses, up to and including the removal of the Taliban from Afghanistan. (The war to depose Saddam Hussein is covered in the next volume.)

Sammon makes no secret of his own support for Bush (and his lack of respect for Bush's immediate predecessor in office). But this isn't a liability, journalistically or otherwise. It isn't that he's not _capable_ of criticizing the Bush Administration (and he does chide the White House for its occasional misstep); it's that he really has come to the conclusion that the Administration is doing a good job and the President has proved equal to his historical tasks. (And as for Clinton, well, let's just say that the ability to see the warts on _that_ presidency isn't exactly a sign of bias.)

Sammon's account is crisp, clear, and briskly paced -- and, since he's been in such close touch with the President, it's the next best thing to being inside Bush's head. It is, in short, a captivating and informative read.

It also incorporates several of Bush's speeches in their entirety -- including his inspiring remarks in the National Cathedral and his stirring 9/20/01 address on Capitol Hill before a joint session of Congress.

Together with _Misunderestimated_, it's a fine account of America's post-9/11 transition from peacetime to wartime. Bush-haters won't like it, but that's their problem.

5 out of 5 stars Thank You George W. Bush.......2004-07-05

As an American, I cannot thank you enough for your heroic handling of the events of 9/11, your steady attack on terrorists, for keeping this country safe, for taking out Sadam Hussein and for defeating Al Gore and his democrat croonies and for making this a better country.

Although we may not be where want to be, we are sure as heck a lot better off now than we would have been if Gore was in office. And four years from now, we will be in a lot better shape with you as our Commander-In-Chief than we would be if John Kerry became President (God Forbid!))

Thank you President Bush for your unselfish service and dedication.

There must be a rule with any author that has a book published by Regnery Publishing and that is that on every third page the book needs to take a negative dig at either President Clinton or Democrats in general. For those of you wondering, this book fulfills the quota with an impressive start on page two. Even though this book is an unabashedly pro Bush book on the 9/11 attacks and the American response, there are more mentions of President Clinton then Osama Bin Laden. The author finds ways to blame just about everything bad in the world on Clinton and then for good measure knocks around his wife at least once per chapter. I knew this book was going to be, in a small part anyway, a bit of a puff piece for Bush. The author wears his love for the President on his sleeve on all his public appearances on the FOX network and he is employed by the rather conservative Washington Times. This was one of the reasons I was drawn to the book. Who doesn't like to read a positive, pro American, rock-um sock-um type book? I thought I would get a nice and interesting look at 9/11 from an author that was probably given more access to the Bush Team because he was going to write such a glowing review. I figured this would be a nice bookend to the Woodward book.

The book does deliver what I was looking for, a very positive and detailed account of the Bush administration from 9/11 through mid 2002. The author does a nice job of giving the reader a great deal of facts that the average author might pass by. This is why I bought the book and on this point I was pleased. My concerns with the book were the rather childish way the author lets his massive dislike for President Clinton invade this book. It was almost as if the author could not stop himself with the rude comments. They added nothing to the main story. If this side show was not enough the author spent about 20% of the book attacking the media and its coverage of the Bush administration. So much so I got to think that maybe the title of the book was somehow related to the Bush Administrations fight with the "Liberal" press instead of Americas fight with terrorists. All of this anti Clinton and press bashing did nothing for the story and took away more from the book then it added.

I guess what really disappointed me was the authors very obvious and not very well done attempts at defending the Bush administration from some of the negative charges or comments made by the press or his opponents. The author covered topics that had nothing or very slightly anything to do with the main focus of the book. Many of the comments were nothing more then bait and switch campaign tactics or well worn GOP standard attack lines usually used at the end of a losing negative campaign. All these comments did for me was to call into question how much of the book as based in solid fact and how much was blind support for the President. What makes the comments sad is that the book did not need them. The President, by almost all accounts, was and still is thought of as performing very well during this time. He does not need this ham handed shading of the facts and cheap shots that this author employs. It actually takes away more then it adds.

Overall I enjoyed the parts of the book that detailed the facts. These sections of the book put the President in a very positive light and were well written. It was just that the negative comment campaign against President Clinton and the press brought the book down to some playground name calling event. Throw in the attack dog dirty campaign style support pieces and the book falls into the middle of the rating scale. If you are an arch conservative you will probably fall in love with the book and the author. If you are more of a moderate and are looking for a book that just covers the facts and skips the rhetoric then I would suggest the Woodward book Bush at War.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointed with our leaders........2004-05-28

I am a sad American - Disappointed with our leaders.
While I was writing my review off-line to take advantage of the spell checking, I watched this book go from number 6 to number 57. I actually read the book. Now I wish I'd spent the money on a good steak with onions, mushrooms and a really big scotch. It's hogwash, an illusion, like most politicians.

I'm an old fart, retired Texas businessman, conservative, grandfather, and once proud to be a Republican. I even voted for George Bush Jr., thinking that Gore was a better statesman, but George Jr. was closer to understanding the plight of the middle working class. It wasn't the biggest mistake I've ever made, but it troubles me the most. I'm sure a lot of good Americans are reassessing their support for our Misunderstandeded President.

Hey class clown, yes; most fun to get drunk with, yes; class bully, yes; but qualified to be President of the Greatest Country in the History of the World? I don't think so. What the hell were we thinking? He doesn't represent us, the middle class, he represents the CEOs, the affluent, the Top 2%, and the lobbyists from big corporations. Time to admit we were wrong.

I have a lot of time on my hands to think, think about the Korean War I served in, WWI that three of my 7 uncles served in, and the Vietnam War that my son was disabled in. I, like the vast majority of Americans, believed our government and trusted politicians back then. But, hey we were stupid, we thought being a lawyer was an honorable profession.

Even though I was a conservative, I contributed to charity, I did volunteer work, I never judged a man or woman who was down on their luck or those who had made bad life decisions. I always thought; "There but for the Grace of GOD, go I." I lived by the Golden Rule. I even supported `Affirmative Action' thinking that Jesus would have also. Given my fellow man that had been so horribly oppressed, a hand up. What happened to Christian charity? You can call the President many things, but you CANNOT call him `compassionate' with a straight face.

This book is written by a life long conservative who is an average journalist and big business supporter. It is turned out by a public relations gin mill and not worthy of your money. One of my four children is a rabid conservative. Somewhere I went wrong. I failed to teach him that family, love, compassion, honor, and being your brother's keeper were the reasons we put here by God. I can no longer be silent. This is not a worthy read, nor is it the truth.

                                          5 out of 5 stars GO BUSH!!!!!.......2003-12-19

Do not get me wrong, I am a strong Democrat who does not support most of President Bush's politics nor his war on Iraq. However I do like him as a person because he is a very down to earth, loving human being and this book proves it. It's sad to see the libreals bashing this book because it has alot to tell and alot to offer about President Bush and what kind of a man he is. I do not look at him as a bad man at all. That does not mean he gets my vote in 04 but I would ask people to read this book with an open mind and think about This President Uniting this country to the best of his ability on 9/11. Al Gore never could have done that let me tell you. So to all readers I hope you read it and enjoy it and perhaps look at President Bush in a diffrent way.

A very well-researched book, this is definately one for the collector. This book's true value lies in its value guides and background information, making for facinating reading. Unfortunately, the photography is only average, and mostly black and white (there is a middle section of 63 colored pages).

This is a great book. I've collected decoys for several years and I own the previous edition of Collecting Antique Bird Decoys and Duck Calls which is now some 10 years old. No disrespect, but the new edition by Russ Lewis far surpasses the old book. Not only will you find thousands of photos but Lewis, an avid collector himself, provides loads of information on traditonal carvers, factory birds, regional influences throughout North America and much more. The depth and breadth of the work is impressive. Lewis is a university professor, and you can tell that he is an educator at heart. It also helps that he has a soul of a collector. If you collect decoys, bird calls, or simply enjoy the outdoors you'll love this book. I'll bet my Red-breasted Merganser decoy on it.

                                          Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Who's squeaking? (CD + explanatory book of UK bird calls).......2002-10-29

The first point for Amazon.com customers is to note that this CD and book was produced with the British market in mind. Most of the species featured will be found in Britain, with a few that occur elsewhere in Europe included for comparison - or in the hope you can spot that rarity. (Incidentally, the CD does not include Black-headed Bunting used on the book cover.)

For serious UK birders, this is a useful product that draws attention to features of calls that will improve your field skills. Less serious birders might think this is anorak territory. Many of the sound clips are short, deliberately so in order to aid comparisons. This is not a disk to compare with bird song recordings that folk will listen to just for pleasure, but for many birders the calls featured will be evocative of personal experiences in the field.

Many CD systematic bird guides now include recordings of calls, or they occur incidentally in video clips. This CD will help you make use of such resources and is excellent value. I give four stars for being different in a market saturated with potboiler field guides.
