Book Description
This innovative approach depicts muscles and bones focuses upon the specifics of surface anatomy. 177 of Sheppard's drawings show many different live models in front, back and side views, and in various standing, sitting, kneeling, crouching, reclining, and twisting poses. Each drawing is accompanied by two diagrams, one for bones, one for muscles.
Customer Reviews:
Absolutely love it.......2007-02-21
As someone else mentioned, this goes in with my George Bridgman books. The terminology is simple, and doesn't get too medical. I really loved the variety of figures used, though I'd love to see more plus sized models in the male side and a more plump female figure.
Sheppard lays out key points in observing how muscles and bones affect the surface anatomy of a figure. It shows you how for example the pelvis shows up and how muscle and fat distribution affects the legs, hips etc.
Sheppard is rather concise and to the point, where many other anatomy books become too technical and you end up getting lost in the details.
The other thing to mention is the price. Bridgman and Sheppard's books are rather inexpensive compared to many other anatomy and figure drawing books out there. This is a definite selling point!
Just What You Need.......2005-11-08
Between the simplified cartoon anatomy books, popular today, and the detailed treatments inspired by medical textbooks, is this fine work. This book is built from the ground up for artists. By focusing on surface anatomy, showing its relation to underlying muscle and bone structure, and then presenting it all with a multitude of useful and expertly done drawings, Sheppard has produced what may be the finest anatomical artist reference.
Most professional artists recommend Bridgeman's works. I don't doubt the usefulness of Bridgeman to a true working professional, but for me, and maybe other amateurs, the concepts in Bridgeman never seem to reveal themselves. Sheppard will be useful the first time you open the book and will certainly clear much of the confusion in figure drawing.
Drawing the Living Figure.......2005-09-03
Excellent book.Draving are fantastic and informative.I just bought the book and would recommend it to everyone who needs help in drawing a human figure.
An essential book for your figure drawing library.......2004-08-08
THIS BOOK IS A "MUST HAVE". It is not the only drawing book that you need in your personal library, but it is one of the most essential.
The book includes about seventy well-drawn male and female nude drawings, grouped by type of pose (standing, crouching, twisting, etc.). Each of the seventy poses is drawn three times --
(1) as an annotated finished drawing,
(2) as an annotated (identically sized) skeleton in the same pose, and
(3) as an annotated (identically sized) muscle diagram in the same pose.
The anatomy is at a level of detail designed for the figure-drawing artist, not for the medical illustrator. As such, only those muscles and bones that are significant to a particular pose are labeled, and are described with simplified nomenclature.
I remember complaining to my instructor that I could discern the rib cage in our male model, but not in this rounded-back posed female model. This book is the ideal reference for seeing the support infrastructure in such situations.
Although there are many approaches to figure drawing, understanding the effects that underlying anatomical infrastructure have on surface anatomy is essential to realistic drawing. In addition to this book, you should also have other books in your figure drawing library, that cover croquis, circles & guidelines, tonal masses, planes, gestures, cylinders, lighting, proportions, contours, and other techniques. But Joseph Sheppard's "Drawing the Living Figure" will be your primary anatomical reference.
Great!.......2004-01-05
This book is both useful and economical. It covers male and female nudes in different positions and angles (3/4, side, frontal).

Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-04
It appears that Light all along has been running a complicated scheme involving loss of memory and the peculiar rules and powers surrounding both the Death Notes and their users, despite working with L and the police.
Not a dumb boy, this one, it seems. Getting back the abilities he wants, he bumps off L, the Yotsuba guys, and basically goes back to the criminal killing spree, as well as getting rid of L's non-police agents.
However, L's breeding ground may provide some new opposition it appears.
Volume 7 of DN.......2007-07-02
I believe many of fan of Death Note was left broken hearted after this book was published. I am also one of them. Please don't be discouraged after chapter 58. I understand you perfectly. Personally, I stoped for three months before picking up Volume 8. However, the plot still is interwined and perfectly sturctured that it is worth reading. Death Note's line work is beautifull, and the plot is unlike any other manga you ever will read. Enjoy, and don't forget to bring a tissue. (I end up needing it)
WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?.......2007-05-27
Tsugumi Ohba, Death Note: Zero (ViZ, 2003)
Oh, Tsugumi Ohba, I now understand why every Death Note fan reviles your name for Chapter fifty-eight. Really. What were you thinking? Well, I guess it's necessary if Light's grand plan is to advance, but jeez. Who do you think you are, Wes Craven? Alfred Hitchcock is probably a better parallel, though-- Death Note remains convoluted, complex, and compelling far enough into its run where the average manga would probably be tailing off. There are those who thought the series dropped off a cliff with this volume, but I am not one of them. I still love it. ****
The story Finally gets back to being Interesting.......2006-11-30
After volume 4 or so of Death Note, the series took a pretty boring turn when one of the two Death Notes is given to a... businessman?
Luckily, that little arc in the series at least has a very grippling ending (as seen in vol. 6). And afterwards, the story begins to pick up the pace again, allowing us into the mind of Light and what he was exactly planning when he intentionally disowned his Death Note. Not only are things explained, but the story's L character shifts to a... kid?
Regardless, this is probably one of the more interesting volumes of the series, since a whole bagload of main (and not so main) characters get axed off via Death Note (what else?). Other things to look forward to in this vooume: some background info on Watari and L, and slight character development with Rem.
LIGHT REMEMBERS.......2006-09-14
Higuchi, the would-be Kira who used the Death Note mainly for personal gain and his company's growth, is cornered by the cops along with Light and L. As the members of the Kira task force touch Higuchi's Death Note, they gain the ability to see its Shinigami and a whole new angle opens on the case, an angle that L wouldn't believe if he wasn't seeing a Death God with his own eyes! Light not only gains the ability to see shinigami but he also gets all his memories back, but the problem is that he must find some way to kill Higuchi and take over ownership of the Death Note without L seeing him write in the name. If he lets go of the Note before getting ownership, he will lose his memories again.
Death Note, even though suffering from some gaping holes in the logic department, is one of the most suspenseful and entertaining series being printed right now. The main enjoyment comes from seeing these characters manuever around each other like an elaborate chess game. This enjoyment is sometimes hindered by the writer's inability to come up with clever twists, and instead relying on arcane rules for the Death Note which get too convoluted for so simple an effect. L and Light continue to be interesting characters who still have a few tricks up their sleeves. The art is great and bolsters a superb idea which is not executed consistently. Still a great read.

The Unknown Brahms.......2000-04-12
If you've ever wanted to know more about the great master, check out this book which was recommended even by the great Menuhin. From start to finish, Schauffler crams the book with tidbits about Brahms ranging from the hilarious to deeply moving.
The Brahms not found in most biographies !.......1998-07-14
Read the book in the college library 45 years ago. In the book, Shauffler details a Johannes Brahms not found in most biographies. There are incidents in his early life dealing with his attitude toward women ( and, of course, much later in his relationship with Robert and more especially, Clara Schumann.) There is also a number of stories related to his tour with the violinist Joachim. Details of his meeting with Johann Strauss Jr., his reactions to his own symphonies, his attitude toward his students, reasons why he never married, his early career as a pianist in "sporting houses", his relationship with prostitutes, why he could never marry. There are many technical details about his music that are perfectly understandable to musicians as well as most laymen. A book for the ages if you are interested in the life of Brahms.

Book Description
Letrell Sprewell. Allen Iverson. John McEnroe. Even Mohammed Ali and Mike Schmidt and Michael Jordan. These are characters of our national imagination, athletes who stand as symbols of our complex relationship with professional sport.
In this erudite and captivating book, bestselling author Larry Platt takes us on a tour through American sports. Offering profiles of the athletes we love (and love to hate), Platt shows that sport, more than any other nationwide pastime, is the way we come to understandand alterrace relations, gender, and, most profoundly, how we communicate with each other in ways that are often given too little credit in the minds of intellectuals.
Thought provoking and richly written, New Jack Jocks offers a textured picture of how athletes live their lives and how we live out and define American culture by the way we come to understand their lives in and out of the halls of play.

Indiana Broadcasting.......2000-05-03
Drawn from an extensive oral history project, this work features twenty-seven oral histories of Hoosier broadcasters involved in a variety of broadcast occupations around Indiana from 1926 to the present. Topics explored are individual stations and the people who worked there, the evolution of technology and government regulation, the ethics of broadcasters, the impact of broadcasting on the public, and the future of the broadcast profession.
I found this book informative, entertaining and well researched. As an Indiana broacaster, the book gave me additional insight into our state's broadcast history and the individuals who helped pave the way for others to follow.

Over one million children have been diagnosed with ADHD and Ritalin is the most commonly prescribed drug used to combat the problem. While Dr. Wachtel advocates the use of appropriate medications, including Ritalin, Dexedrine, and anti-depressants, he also believes ADHD is more than a biological problem, affecting a child's self-esteem, social life, and the ability to perform well in school. The Attention Deficit Answer Book expertly guides readers step-by-step through the process of deciding how to best handle their child's particular case. *The success of related books such as The Myth of the A.D.D. Child shows there is interest in ADHD and its treatment. *The Attention Deficit Answer Book is accessible, written in a question-and-answer format.

Accesible Guide, Clear Outline of Options/Solutions.......2000-06-16
Dr. Wachtel, while providing a well-informed and knowledgeable perspective on ADHD, brings to the table the additional gift of compassion. This book would be of interest to anyone curious about ADHD, but it clearly speaks to those most concerned: parents who are dealing with the ways in which they can help to give their child the most happy and productive life. Dr. Wachtel explores not only the technical aspects of the disorder which seems to be on the tip of everyone's tongue nowadays, but treats the situation of a child with ADHD with respect, attempting to understand the ramifications of and possible solutions for the everyday situations one with this problem can find themself in. This book is a good first step for a parent attempting to inform themselves in order to work with both their child and the medical profession to find solutions.

PRESS ON.......2000-07-12
America's military has always touted itself as being the bastion of equal opportunity for Blacks. Just how true is this assertion? What exactly has been the military's attitude towards Blacks?
Strength for the Fight, a comprehensive history of Blacks in the military, examines the historical record and forces one to rethink the military's so-called benevolence to Blacks. Nalty's work brings up several facts regarding America's attitude in having Blacks serve in the military.
1. America never wanted to arm Blacks no matter how patriotic they were. Of course slavery and the possibility of insurrection played into their fears of having Blacks in the military.
2. Blacks serving in the military were there because of expedientcy not because they were willingly welcomed as equal partners.
3. Military icons thought Blacks were inferior soldiers and did their best to keep them in segregated units.
Those and other insights give you the tools to evaluate both the good and bad that the military has placed on Blacks. Everyone should remember that the military is a mirror image of the majority society. It changes out of necessity not because it needs to do the right thing. Nalty corrects the one sided view concerning the benevolence of the military and also gives the rich history of those who fought for America's freedom even when they themselves were not free. The major fault one can find in his work is a paucity of information regarding Black women in the military. Other than that this is an outstanding work which should be read by all ROTC cadets and leaders serving in the military. Pressing on inspite of the indignities layed on Black military men and women is the rich heritage that they pass on to future generations.
Black American Soldiers Civil War - WWII.......2000-02-12
This book is great. This book allows one to peer into the harsh life of black soldiers. I was shocked how many on the WWII black soldier who re-enlisted had to give up their military rack just to fight in the war. I commend Mr. Nalty for telling the story of the Black Soldiers.
Customer Reviews:
A good foreign policy overview.......2007-07-08
This is a good survey of American foreign policy since 1938. It can be dry at times since it is dealing with policy but I highly recommend it. Stephen E. Ambrose co-wrote it so you know it must be pretty good. I recommend this because many Americans now adays don't really know much about America's foreign policy and how we became a hegemonic power. If you are interested in American foreign policy since 1938, then this is the book for you.
Good book up until the author switch.......2007-02-02
This book started out really well. Ambrose did a good job of laying out the history of America's global relations. Like a good historian he pointed out the facts of what happened. He gave credit where credit was due but also gave appropriate criticisms. Yes it is easy to look back and criticize but he did so evenhandedly so that students could learn.
Somewhere in the book the tone changed decidedly. Instead of pointing out what was good and what was bad about the presidents and their policies the book started taking on a definent slant. Where one would have at least expected some criticism of Carter you got only defense. At one point the author's only justification for Carter not being all that bad was that Nixon was bad too. This sounds like playground logic if I ever heard it.
I went through the book and found something out that I did not know when I purchased it. Rather than two authors collaborating on one piece the actually wrote separate parts of the book. Originally written by Ambrose the book was later revised by Brinkley who obviously is nowhere near the historian that Ambrose was. A good historian can turn their personal feelings aside and look at things objectively, Brinkley is not one of them.
The book was five stars up to the Nixon years when Ambrose was clearly writing. 0 stars are attributed to the op-ed portion that marks Brinkley's contribution.
history lite.......2006-04-10
mr. ambrose has always been an easy target. he's overextended they say. well, after reading this pile of words, i'd reduce ambrose to a decent intro to the topic. if you'd like an overview of events during america's rise to superpower status, flip through these pages and consider his editorials lightly. the events are indisputable and his spin is helpful. ambrose is like water on a paper towel. give this book to young students who express interest in american foreign policy during the 20th century. if they indicate an interest, start pursuing other tomes, written by legitimate historians well-versed in their subjects.
Can't Put It Down!.......2005-11-29
Ambrose's writing is so fluid and exciting that the book reads more like a novel than a history book. A great read.
Excellent overview of U.S. foreign policy since 1938.......2005-11-17
This is a great book for those looking to understand the United States' position in the world today. Ambrose and Brinkley are two critically acclaimed authors who have an excellent grasp on America in the 20th century.
The current edition of the book covers the period from 1938 to the first Clinton administration. The authors provide a good explanation of all major military conflicts and foreign policy decisions the U.S. made during those years. Note, however, that this book only covers U.S. foreign policy and deals very little with domestic policy and events. Ambrose and Brinkley do an excellent job connecting major themes in American foreign policy, such as containment and the Truman Doctrine, to the actions Presidents and Secretaries of State and Defense made.
The book is an excellent overview for casual readers and historians looking to understand American foreign policy over the last sixty years. Sentences are kept brief and to the point. The chapters flow with a good narration of events and in a chronological order. Ambrose and Brinkley, while not providing a bibliography, do provide some good suggestions for further reading. Overall, this is an excellent starting point for casual historians and students of modern U.S. history concerned with foreign policy.
