Customer Reviews:
good tips for enamelling.......2007-01-19
this was a very good book for learning enamelling techniques. The book includes good pictures and advices. In Finland we have nothing like that in Finnish language so first we have to learn english and then try to translate all those ways to enamel. There are so many amazing books for jewellery workers in english and this was one of them.
First steps in Enameling.......2006-11-06
It is everything I need to know about enamaling. I found this book to be extremely helpful in buying products to start enameling. Iis has great pictures and explanations. Good projects. I learned alot from this book before I took my first class.

Jinks does it again!.......2006-04-10
This is a very good starting book to answer questions about what you need to know and have and also do to get started in enamel. This will be a reference book you will keep if you choose to continue in the craft. This book on the craft of enameling. Is up to her other works in the jewelry/metal art fields. It starts out to ground the newbie in the basics. The publisher also chimes in with the standard warnings about materials and equipment. My only warning is if you have no uncommon sense, please take up something else. She covers intro to enameling, equipment and materials and working with enamels. Moving on to seven easy type projects that you can make changes to if they do not suit you. All without loosing any of the instruction. Then moves on to some more techniques. Following up with seven more projects. Ending with a couple of pages of troubleshooting info which a lot of craft books lack. A glosssary and the resource guides.
The pictures are clear, crisp and in color. With only enough work table shown for balance. They are of a size that gives a good visual of the descriptions along with the numbers on both. The gallery pages are dispersed thru the book. With an assortment of Jinks and other artists work. I own it I am planning on keeping it.
Perfect Book For Learning Enameling.......2005-07-22
Great book, has just the amount of instructions to help you get started.
Great intro. to enameling.......2000-03-30
I have no experience with enameling at all, but wanted to know how to do it. This book was a great intro. to the process. I haven't tried it yet, but I do feel that I could at least make an attempt, based on the instructions in the book. Many instructive books leave you with too many unanswered questions, which prevents you from actually trying things yourself (especially when dangerous elements are utilized in the process, as in jewelry-making). For someone with some metal-working experience, however, I believe that you could actually get started on your own with this book.

Customer Reviews:
waste of money.......2005-09-06
this book has no value at all. its suggestions for getting ahead of other people in emnergency rooms: "say you have a pain in your chest". i wasted $6.00.
Some clever ideas... if you have the integrity for it........2004-12-31
This guy offers advice like going to the guy in the front of the line at a barber shop and giving him a sob story about how your mom just died. Another suggestion is to pick a wimp at the front of the line in a crowded amusement park and try to make him think that you're a man of God who has to get the orphans back in an hour. Would he please just let you in in front of him. Then if he doesn't oblidge, there's a reason you picked a wimp. You now threaten him with physical violence.
If those methods suit you, you'll probably like the book.
Book Description
For hundreds of thousands of loyal listeners throughout the United States, Jim Svejda's weekly radio program The Record Shelf is not to be missed. Now, this amusing and irreverent guide captures the special flavor of Svejda's unique program. Without fear or favor, he recommends his choices of CDs and cassettes for hundreds of compositions from the standard, and not-so-standard, fare. You'll enjoy reading this wryly humorous and candid collection time and time again.
"No one on the air treats both composers and performers with such personal devotion or has such a fine ear for differences in inflections and interpretations."
—New York Times
"The best, most searching and fascinating review of music around."
—Dudley Moore
"If you want to expand or enrich your musical horizons, this book is indispensable. No matter how sophisticated you may be about the world of classical music, Jim Svejda's book will introduce you to new performances and perspectives."
—Michael Medved, PBS's Sneak Preview
"Great fun to read."
—Sir André Preven
Customer Reviews:
Way too biased, but somewhat entertaining.......2005-07-15
I think Svejda is a great salesman, but beyond that there is little, if nothing, that shows me that he knows much about music beyond his own narrow personal favorites which are questionable at best.
Give him credit for being a great con man though
love-but proceed w/ caution.......2005-02-28
It's rare to come across a music guide and end up enjoying it like a literary work. The fact that he is also as obsessed as I am with Mozart's music above all other composers is another point in his favor. Most recommendations have been true, I've disagreed with a few. But he's always entertaining. And what i most love is his passion for classical music. Long live the Svejda! But proceed with caution if you want a guide couched in dry, polite, bloodless prose.
A hilarious romp and a labor of love.......2004-12-31
Before you read anything else, if you're one of the following, do NOT buy this book (elevated blood pressure and a desire to strangle Jim will inevitably follow):
* A die-hard audiophile (preferring a superbly recorded version of a mediocre performance to a lousy recording of a great performance),
* Someone who only listens to early music (something Jim infers most of us don't do), and
* An afficianado of recordings by Harnoncourt, Leonhardt, von Karajan or Robert Shaw.
With this caveat on the table, I'll say without reservation that this is a must-have book for any music enthusiast. Even if it were not packed with excellent recommendations for your music library, Jim's often merciless humor alone is worth the price and will supply hours of belly laughs.
I find myself giggling even when Jim is lambasting one of my favorite recordings and admitting to myself that perhaps he might have a point (however small).
I'm looking forward to the next edition...
His recommendations are often poorly recorded.......2001-12-26
I enjoy listening to Mr. Svejda on KUSC and enjoy his enthusiasm, immense knowledge, and many opinions. Almost without exception, I can refer to this book after hearing even an obscure piece for the first time and find a thoughtful discussion of it and its composer.
My complaint with his reviews is his lack of concern for recording quality to which he openly admits. He has a tin ear when it comes to good recording engineering. Even the recordings he describes as well recorded are often duds in terms of sound quality. For me, there is little enjoyment hearing a fine performance that sounds as if it were recorded in a freight elevator through a fluffy blanket.
Those like me who, while not minding less than audiophile grade recordings of the musical giants who preceeeded high fidelity, find little excuse for the inexcusably poor recording quality of so much classical work by contemporary artists and ensembles, should take his recommendations with a grain of salt. Several times, I've bought cds recommended in this book only to be dismally disappointed by a poorly executed recording.
Doesn't include newer recordings.......2001-10-18
Svejda's writing style is entertaining, and his recommendations are all pretty good. But even the newer, supposedly updated editions of this guide seem to ignore the thousands of new recordings that have appeared in the last five years or so. I question whether he has truly revisited some of the warhorse selections over the years and done a fair comparison with more recent recordings.

Book Description
Based on a study examining the meaning of the term "media literacy" in children, this volume concentrates on audiovisual narratives of television and film and their effects. It closely examines children's concepts of real and unreal and how they learn to make distinctions between the two. It also explores the idea that children are protected from the harmful effects of violence on television by the knowledge that what they see is not real.
This volume is unique in its use of children's own words to explore their awareness of the submerged conventions of television genres, of their functions and effects, of their relationship to the real world, and of how this awareness varies with age and other factors. Based on detailed questionnaire data and conversations with 6 to 11-year-old children, carried out with the support of a fellowship at the Annenberg School for Communication, University of Pennsylvania, the book eloquently demonstrates how children use their knowledge of real life, of literature, andof art, in intelligently evaluating the relationship between television's formats, and the real world in which they live.

Description:
Cross-sectional survey data on Swedish adolescents aged 12-18 was used to estimate the link between individual social capital and smoking, illicit drug use and binge drinking. Major conclusions drawn were (1) that social capital, indicated by measures of social participation and trust, was negatively correlated with the probability of smoking and illicit drug use, but (2) that social capital showed no statistically significant correlation with the probability of binge drinking.

Book Description
The SS Special Troops in Italy in 1943, the U.S. Special Forces in Vietnam in 1964, Britain’s Special Air Services at Oman in 1972, the human torpedoes of the Italian Underwater Division of the Italian Navy in 1941—these stand among the many astonishing military operations recounted in this graphic, pulse-pounding volume of true tales told by fighters in the world’s most elite armed forces. Veteran editor Jon E. Lewis assembles firsthand reports from the battlefields, featuring John Pimlott’s Presidential citation for his bravery in Vietnam with the 1st Air Calvary, Claire Chennault’s exploits with the Flying Tigers against the Japanese in Burma, Eugene sledge’s island-hopping assaults with the U.S. 1st Marine Division, and John Lodwick’s participation in the last wartime action of the British Special Boat Squadron—the inspiration for Alistair MacLean’s Guns of Navarone. The Mammoth Book of Elite Forces covers the world’s crack outfits from the dashing missions of the unorthodox British “Private Army” of Vladimir “Popski” Peniakoff to spread “alarm and despondency” behind Axis lines in Libya and Tunisia to the highly trained Israeli paratroopers who rescued an airplaneful of hostages in Entebbe. Included, too, are brave adventures of the Green Berets, the Delta Force, the French Foreign Legion, and all the other special corps who get going when the going gets tough.

The Survivor is the rare book with positive recommendations from both liberal historian Arthur M. Schlesinger Jr. and Brit Hume of the Fox News Channel. The author, John F. Harris--who covered the Clinton presidency as a political reporter at The Washington Post for six years--finds the perfect balance for his subject, writing with point-blank frankness about Clinton's impressive strengths and many weaknesses and painting an utterly fair portrait of one of the most charismatic and enigmatic political figures of the last 50 years. Harris at times is harsher to Clinton than many of the president's critics were and at other times, as in the case of his impeachment, is far kinder. He occasionally editorializes on the motivations of the Clintons, that ultimate power couple: why their marriage was not (despite public opinion) a sham based on political opportunity; how Bill's upbringing contributed to his willingness to take risks (sometimes to his great harm); and how "permanent Washington," including the presidential press corps, was determined to teach these Arkansas outsiders a lesson in the administration's rocky early days.
Harris peppers the book with both fact and anecdote, moving swiftly from subject to subject. The Survivor shows Clinton's growth as a leader throughout the eight years of his presidency, and how his personal failings almost brought them to a close. Far from being a milquetoast summary of events, The Survivor is a gripping read set behind the scenes in the West Wing. Harris has crafted a brilliant book with writerly style and with an eye on history. The Survivor is one of the best political titles of the year, and--like its subject matter--may be appreciated even more as time goes on. --Jennifer Buckendorff
Book Description
The definitive account of one of the most accomplished, controversial, and polarizing figures in American history
Bill Clinton is the most arresting leader of his generation. He transformed American politics, and his eight years as president spawned arguments that continue to resonate. For all that has been written about this singular personality–including Clinton’s own massive autobiography–there has been no comprehensive, nonpartisan overview of the Clinton presidency.
Few writers are as qualified and equipped to tackle this vast subject as the award-winning veteran Washington Post correspondent John F. Harris, who covered Clinton for six of his eight years in office–as long as any reporter for a major newspaper. In
The Survivor, Harris frames the historical debate about President William Jefferson Clinton, by revealing the inner workings of the Clinton White House and providing the first objective analysis of Clinton’s leadership and its consequences.
Harris shows Clinton entering the Oval Office in 1993 primed to make history. But with the Cold War recently concluded and the country coming off a nearly uninterrupted generation of Republican presidents, the new president’s entry into this maelstrom of events was tumultuous. His troubles were exacerbated by the habits, personal contacts, and the management style, he had developed in his years as governor of Arkansas. Clinton’s enthusiasm and temper were legendary, and he and Hillary Rodham Clinton–whose ambitions and ordeals also fill these pages–arrived filled with mistrust about many of the characters who greeted them in the “permanent Washington” that often holds the reins in the nation’s capital.
Showing surprising doggedness and a deep-set desire to govern from the middle, Clinton repeatedly rose to the challenges; eventually winning over (or running over) political adversaries on both sides of the aisle–sometimes facing as much skepticism from fellow Democrats as from his Republican foes. But as Harris shows in his accounts of political debacles such as the attempted overhaul of health care, Clinton’s frustrations in the war against terrorism, and the numerous personal controversies that time and again threatened to consume his presidency, Bill Clinton could never manage to outrun his tendency to favor conciliation over clarity, or his own destructive appetites.
The Survivor is the best kind of history, a book filled with major revelations–the tense dynamic of the Clinton inner circle and Clinton’s professional symbiosis with Al Gore to the imprint of Clinton’s immense personality on domestic and foreign affairs–as well as the minor details that leaven all great political narratives. This long-awaited synthesis of the dominant themes, events, and personalities of the Clinton years will stand as the authoritative and lasting work on the Clinton Presidency.
From the Hardcover edition.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Clinton Book !.......2007-01-11
This is an excellent book that gives the reader lots of interesting, insightful information about President Clinton.
Remember How Hopeful? How Infuriating It Was??.......2006-12-04
Remember the political nineties? I remember my own early enthusiasm for the New Democrat as political antidote. Bill Clinton's maddening foibles (sins?) have always in my mind had to be balanced with some real achievements like a balanced budget and welfare reform. If anything, Clinton personified a new kind of leader in that his private life and inner mind were exposed in ways Presidents had not been before. A President just simply wasn't supposed to feel our pain or twaddle with interns. I learned about "compartmentalization" watching Clinton as President on 24-hour news cycles.
John Harris does an admirable job navigating partisan invective and still sore political wounds. Harris tells key stories well, weaving throughout the narrative an intriguing capsule of the political survivor. I give his work four stars as I don't know that I gained any new insights beyond what I observed living through the nineties. Survivor is an enjoyable series of linked essays vividly recapturing the political nineties from a view alongside Clinton.
as close to fair as you can expect.......2006-05-26
If you feel Franken, M. Moore, Hannity or Rush are credible, than this book probably isn't for you. This is as close to fair and accurate as your going to get. While it's obvious the author is favorable to Clinton, he doesn't hesitate to point out his mistakes. Someone might complain the book doesn't mention every single incident, but what book can? Even "War and Peace" can't. I am very much enjoying the book. It's virtually impossible to find an unbiased book. Everyone has an opinion, just give me the information and let me decide. I despise Bush, I liked Reagan, and I don't believe either Nixon or Clinton should have been impeached. try it!
Excellent and Informative.......2006-03-06
This is an excellent book, which gives a thorough a balanced account of the Clinton presidency. The author gives good details about all of the controversies of this period ("Travelgate", "Whitewater", the numerous guest stays at the White House, etc.), so that the reader can get the facts about these events. We also get good information about many of Clinton's advisors, staff, and cabinet and who was influential and why and what the Clintons thought of them (e.g., George Stephanopoulos, Dick Morris, Lloyd Bentsen, Robert Reich).
Very Informative!.......2005-12-27
Reading "The Survivor" makes clear why others have labeled Clinton the "Comeback Kid." Clinton et al clearly enter Washington not ready for "Prime Time," and begin his Presidency with a series of seemingly non-stop blunders. The "good news" is that he is also sensitive enough to question why failures occur, and to try to revise accordingly.
Particularly surprising is how Hillary Clinton is portrayed - as a somewhat domineering "co-president" (at least in the first term) who commits what are probably the administration's two biggest blunders - withholding requested Whitewater documents (Hillary had done legal work for the failed Madison Guarantee S&L, and there was the appearance that Governor Clinton had blocked regulators from quickly taking over Madison in return for campaign donations - the result was to energize Ken Starr's never-ending independent investigation), and creating a horribly complex and comprehensive health care overhaul bill that circumvented normal legislative processes (1,342 pages, helping set the stage for the Republican takeover of Congress).
Clinton's comebacks begin early in the original 1991 campaign - from the Jennifer Flowers affair and his draft-dodging. After choosing Al Gore as running mate, Clinton's standing rose from last to first, and stayed there. After election, but prior to assuming office, he then created his next problem - appearing weak to his own party leaders.
Shortly after election came the embarrassing homosexuals in the Armed Forces flap, "Travelgate," having to reverse campaign promises for a middle-class tax cut (deficit reform took greater priority) and support for Haitian emigrees (reversed because of the likely heavy costs in both dollars and lives lost attempting to reach Florida), banning the press corp from the West Wing (quickly rescinded), Zoe Baird's Attorney General nomination (scuttled because of her failure to pay withholding taxes for her illegal immigrant household help), and pushing a tax increase (instead of leading off with more popular and bi-partisan welfare reform).
An on-going problem within the Clinton administration was the need to both assuage his Democrat base (especially prior to elections), and satisfy the public at large. In '95 this led to his rehiring Dick Morris as political consultant because Morris had helped Clinton get return to the Arkansas Governor's Office after being defeated for reelection, and was seen as master of the "dark art" of negative campaigning. Another aid to balancing these two demands was bringing David Gergen aboard - a veteran of three Republican administrations.
Re-election to President was immensely aided by Gingrich's overplaying his hand in the government shutdown over the budget, and Clinton's Morris-encouraged triangulation of the Republicans' best issues.
The second term, negatively was dominated by the Lewinsky affair, and positively by Clinton's efforts to bring Israel and Palestine together.
Overall very informative.
